Aww how come?! And youre not!

I turned 22 on Monday. Just seems a lot older than 21 for some reason, probably because the next landmark birthday is 30. It was a nice age, I miss it.

Our lovely Admin started it off in 2005 after the board on the EE website closed. I just joined the EE boards when it was closing and came across this site and was so happy to join. Yes we started in 2005 Feb so our 9th anniversay is soon.I was pregnant at the time and apparently had the first recorded birth on the site

Well I've finally joined the 21st century and joined Facebook. Marley bought me a new smart-phone last week as my last phone was rubbish. I've had it about 7 years. So please add me my name is Kathleen Logan and my picture is of four females dressed in black bin bags with black mascara on our faces. Don't ask it was a caravan v's caravan water fight on holiday at Easter.

Had the pleasure to meet up with Jodi in Holland on Sunday. She is just as nice in person as she is on these boards. Also had the joy of knowing what it is like to be in a country that has won a world cup. It was magical here on sunday night.. lots of noise and parties...

I've had a pretty awful few days. Dad has had a heart attack last Friday and is now waiting for bypass surgery. These hospital visits are awful draining and I just feel exhausted and close to burn out! It was all very out of the blue and I think I've only just got over the shock of it all.

I've picked up some great bargains off Gumtree. The cot looks like it's never been used, and comes with a mattress and sheets which are all spotless too. I love picking up second hand bargains because I can feel proud of myself for recycling as well as saving money. :D

I wanted to tell you about my whistleblowing. I took on someone high up in the NHS locally and after months and months of the complaint being ignored and attempts to make it go away an idendependent investigator was finally appointed. Myself and my witnesses were all interviewed and we evidenced my complaint. This caused concern. Anyway they then abandoned the terms of reference so the person i complained about would not be cross examined or interviewed. I challenged this and they stopped the investigation altogether and now threatening to start it again with a new set of terms with a new investigator. They have all my evidence and are finding loopholes. I refuse to go through the process again as they will re run again and again until the person is found innocent. They have tried to sabotage the investigation at every stage and are now attempting to pull my organisation out from a contract to punish us all. I have had really bad hate mail twice and police have had to be involved. I have gone down a dress size because of it all. I have never challenged anything in this way before but really glad I did as it has exposed even more issues within the NHS...which is a bit of an old boys network if you ask me. This person is getting all the protection they need from them and they constantly think of ways the person can remain in their high position despite seeing plenty of evidence that they need to be removed. What this has shown me is that I have amazing friends, neighbours and people I work with. So what ever happens I have right on my side and can hold my head up high.but i dont know when it is all going to come to an end. Its been going on for 9 months.

I wanted to tell you about my whistleblowing.

What an ordeal you've been through. :(

I've read much about the way the NHS closes its ranks and protects its own, and it's so disappointing to know things don't seem to be getting any better. To be fair, this isn't just a problem in the NHS, it goes on in organisations throughout the world. I love the NHS and think we're so lucky to have it, but it's not without some deep problems. I remember the scandal of the cardiac surgeon (I think it was in a Bristol hospital) a decade or so ago. He killed loads of kids and it was covered up for years! Then there was the whistleblower who had to emigrate to Australia because he could no longer work in medicine in this country because he was so hated. It's appalling stuff.

I think you've been incredibly strong and brave to pursue this for nine months. It's shocking that things have got so bad the police had to be involved! I'm glad you've got so much support. :)

Today was a bad day tried to sleep but can't. I was horrible to the family due to what's going on. Could'nt do anything when I got home just took to my bed. They have taken on a new investigator as they said the first one was busy so couldn't complete the investigation. He just told us he was and is available so they are lying. So now I have to do a complaint to the NHS ombudsman so the investigation will be investigated. A lot of work involved. I have been doing 70 hour weeks while this is going on and thought my end was complete. So was very angry today as this is still
Taking over my life. Plus my iPad crashed just got it working now.

I hope you got to sleep afterwards.

Your family will understand. Most of us lash out at our nearest and dearest when stressed - I certainly do! An apology is all it takes to put it right.

I'm sorry to hear that they're messing you around so much. I understand you're at the end of your tether. Sleep must be a priority for you at the moment to help you get through this. A helpful tip (http://criticalmas.com/2014/01/amazing-back-sleep-hack/) I've picked up is to put a pinch or two of salt and sugar under your tongue when you can't sleep because your adrenalin is racing (even though you're tired). This lowers adrenalin which helps you get to sleep. It's worked for me on numerous occasions when I can't sleep because my mind is racing. It also helps at other times of stress. I keep a little pot of 5:1 sugar/salt by my bed.

Have you tried hypnosis? I've got a pretty good app by this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hivebrain.andrewjohnson.relaxlite) guy that I use to relax - which in turn helps me to sleep.

I hope you're having a better day today.

3 blankets, and two of them are queen sized bed size with edging sewn on later, 4 scarves, 5 hats
The one blanket I`m making is for me and hubby in dark blue with a bright yellow braided knitted border. The blue/yellow are the colours of the college football team here...WV Mountaineers. It was supposed to be for our anniversary on Dec 9th, but will have to put it on hold til after Christmas. Here`s the main part of it. I`m about 3/4 complete with it.

Just watched todays episodes and now ready for bed! Exhausted physically and mentally.

I'm glad you gave them what for!! Are you feeling a bit better today?

I live in Ilford Essex and work in london boroughs of Newham, Waltham Forest and Barking and Dagenham. Have had to go to Hackney for work here and there over the years. Always get lost but I have my sat nav now. Had to do some consultation work with patients when they were moving their community dental services in that very old hospital (St Leonards i think)To a new all purpose building with no thought given to parking.not so long ago.
Are you aware of Newham Parent Book shop? They support a lot of writers. Sometimes they organise readings which i have gone to. I love my books.

Went to a hospital with my 19 yr old daughter today as she has been complaining about difficulties breathing especially at night. They did the xray and blood test recently. Her nose swells internally restricting breathing. They said she is allergic to grass! I did'nt know you could be allergic to grass.

I think.grass pollen is most common allergen.
When nose is affected can be called Allergic
Rhinitis. Can be seasonal or throughout the
year dependent on cause.
If u put Allergic Rhinitis into search u might
find helpful info on.a health website.
I hope a solution is found for daughter soon.

My sister was told years ago when a teenager
that she was allergic to.her own perpiration!!
It caused dreadful rashes etc but it did stop.

I hope your daughter's feeling better. I've been having hay fever symptoms recently, and my asthma's been worse than usual (same for my mum), so we must be allergic to grass pollen too. It may be worse than usual this year due to the mild October we've experience.

I check on my neighbour who is 78 everyday. She had a fall and is at the mercy of carers from an agency. She has to pay for the shoddy service as well as she is over the threshold. Anyway it was interesting talking to her about the war this evening and her school days and rationing. She can remember getting her sweets rationed and queing up for penny buns at break times. I did'nt know they had pomegranates in Britain that early on. I thought they came from abroad.

She was good to me when I was ill in 2008/09. Went with me to a lot of medical appts. She has a good family network but the nearest live about 45 mins away. They check her the weekends. I think she will have to move now as this is the second fall from the stairs. Second time she has missed the last step. She does not want to leave though as she has lived here 50 years and lots of memories with her husband etc.
She is 78 and I am 48 but its like I am talking to someone my age. So age is irrelevant. She says she feels middle aged not old and that is how I see her. But her age hit home when I took her to see Englebert Humperdink at the Royal Albert Hall. Most people were there with their zimmer frames.

I have a 3000 word essay on Renaissance art to complete for Thursday... and procrastinating as usual I logged in for the first time in eons!

Hello everyone, new faces and old.

Amazingly I am now only six month away from completing my degree in classics and art history, I have also signed up for art classes at the ECA and my life is incredibly busy doing selfish, fun stuff like visiting art galleries around the UK and Europe on a regular basis.

Things have changed so much for me since I started the OU that I actually do not know any of the contestants on Strictly except Greg from Masterchef and Judy Murray :o

I hope that everyone is healthy and happy, Best Wishes Trinity x

Just thinking back to the topic of depression which seems so common and on the increase. I remember when I was so down I rang my friend/ hairdresser and her husband picked the phone up. I struggled to speak to ask if his wife was available. She spoke to me and I just wanted her to keep me in her prayers. After 15 mins she turned up to my house for the first time with her husband .i was shocked. She said her husband was concerned about me after hearing my voice. He spoke to me and said I needed to get out and do things. i said I did'nt want to do things or go out. He said he would do a barbeque for me the next day and that all my family should come including my mother and sister.
Anyway in the morning I woke up and it was snowing heavily. I rang him as the barbeque was obviously not going to happen. To my surprise he said he was out there in the snow and that i should get myself ready quickly. It was an amazing barbeque and a turning point for me as I was so touched by it all. He did this for me as I helped him out once when he got stuck with a legal case a while back and could not afford a lawyer. Although I am not a lawyer I did his case and won it for him. So the message is show kindness to each other it really helps especially when you are down

Its especially difficult at work - now a lot of
large employers "monitor" sick absence after
only a few days. Things will be done under the
letter of the law but it increases presssure
and thats when person needs friends.
It costs less than redundancy for an emplyer
wanting to cut costs.

Good employers will be supportive. As long as they understand mental health. I have appointed people in senior positions that have had a mental illness knowing their History. The sickness rules are there really for the ones that play the system. Genuine illness has to be supported if not you could be dragged through the courts.

I wish all employers were as understanding as you. The sad fact is that most won't even look at someone with a history of mental health problems. :(

Good employers will!
But there are legal requirements to grant
interviews to those with disability/ certain
illnesses. Also to withholding a position
from someone purely on those grounds
and open to challenge. So those less good
will also-ungraciously.

Re Game Players- I think most of those
who have done it for some time have now
been "dealt with".

My point was really about people who have
had a job for some time and little sick absence
- then had an illness
inc a mental illness that has put them outside
limits. Having been monitored quite soon after
absence began-
Then due to not being able to fully comply
with return to work arrangements even tho
in a small way - have found dismissal proceedings
on grounds of ineffiency commenced.
Unless they can rectify things very quickly and
despite union& legal assistance have not been
stop this.
I mentioned large employers- usually personnel
matters are decided nationally and local managers
are mouth-pieces and letter-issuers for the
"procedures". Not able to make small judgment
decisions. I agree with there being rules but.....
Financial decisions by national/govt bodies are taken
on what will be cheapest this budget year not what
is better long-term.
People are now more aware of procedures- this puts
a stress on them- also a lesser one on those not ill
but who can see what could happen to them if they
were.
It always good to hear of someone doing the right
thing without legal pressure. Long may you do so!

Finally I havent written this because of treatment
of myself or friends/ family but just based on
changes in the workplace in hard times!

When you shortlist someone for a job if its done properly you will not know who they are or whether they are disabled on not. We only look at all of that when we analyse data at the end of the recruitment process. We may get to know when we ask if there are any special requirements for interview otherwise I have no idea. I have never interviewed anyone because they are disabled and that I feel I have to. I just interview who comes out best at shortlisting. As for the new ways of dealing with sickness I agree it is harsh when someone has worked years and given so much it can feel that they are not valued. My sisters friends going through that right now and I think she has got to the point where she wants them to let her go.

Unfortunately abuse of sickness is still around. I had to deal with a case recently. People still shock and surprise me and they make it harder for genuine cases.

I was referring to the 2 ticks guarantee scheme
where employers often councils /govt depts
quarantee a disabled applicant an interview
as long as they have the minimum qualifications.
Applicants can complain if they dont get an
interview and also if when awarding the job
their disability has not been compared fairly
to that of another applicant.
So somewhere in the procedure it is known
they are disabled but at what stage / by whom
I dont know. Also I know at the end all is reviewed
to ensure procedures met and no justifiable
complaints.
A lot of employers will do the right thing
because they are fair people but was making
the point that those not naturally so will do
the right thing.to avoid liigation and unwelcome
publicity. Im sorry if my comment could be
read otherwise. Its a complicated emotive
topic and trying to condense things can
mean you miss important bits out.

I do not think they use it as they should otherwise we would have more disabled people in jobs. in my NHS job when we do a staff survey not one of the staff team list they have a disability or long term condition. They must be scared to say so. Its meant to be anonymous but they still are anxious about it. That's the environment people are working in now.

Just spent hours in A and E as my husband fell down the stairs. Think he has damaged his knee. Still waiting for someone to look at his xrays. My children rang me at work saying the paramedics were with him and taking him to Whipps Cross Hospital . Weird as its not my local hospital. This is the third time his done something to his leg. First time he broke one running after my 3 yr old daughter in a park. She was running in between trees pretending to be little red riding hood. He thought she was going to get injured and injured himself in the process.

No broken bones or fractures but they kept him in as he cannot walk. Going to be like this for a week I think. But he will be home tomorrow. .Just got back from hospital. Exhausted. Missed Corrie and Celebrity Get me out of here. Shocked Jimmy has been voted out but he did go over the top the other day. Will watch it all tomorrow. Oh its tomorrow now. You can never get any signal in the hospital so my ipad and phone were useless unless i stuck my head out the window.

Hope he will be ok and well wishes

Thank you all. Hopefully He will be home today. Yesterday was a strange day. My doctors surgery rang me on Friday and when I rang back they did't know why anyone had rang me and who. I came home for a bit yesterday while my husbands friends were at the hospital and my 15 yr son told me the doctor rang. I rang her and she said that she has to put me on the cancer pathway again. I had Thyroid Cancer in 2008 and have been swallowing funny again recently. Well actually from June but I have been ignoring it. So I have to have tests, got my ultasound Thursday. I am dreading the camera they shove up your nose and down your throat. I said I was'nt going to have that one.i refused that test after my final surgery in 2009. They wanted to check my voice was ok. I said it was. Anyway it may not be anything and they say maybe due to anxiety with all this whistleblowing stuff. If it turns out to be because I am anxious how do I stop it. I think its my glands swelling up under my chin dont think it is cancer as my recent blood test was clear of cancer.

Need a big rant before I crack up. Not sure of people views on ADHD but I a sick of hearing that it is made up and just ba parenting. I don't think I am a bad mother and I definitely say no to my kids. My son has ADD with agression and some social issues. It is a real illness and is extremely difficult to live with. I have tried lots of things and even moved my son to a school that deals with these problems. However, it got so bad that the school can't teach him anymore and I had to admit him to a special clinic that provides therapy and testing to see if medication will help or not. My soon must stay over night andI only get to see him for 2 hours 3 nights a week and 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday. It breaks my heart to leave him there so "it is not real" is not great words of comfort to me or my son. What do you say to a child when they ask why they can't be normal and have friends? Sorry son, itis not real I'm just a bad mother.....

Sorry for the rant. I miss my son, am miles from my family and just feeling lost and stressed. Rant over

What an awful situation for you and your family Siobhan! :(

Please feel free to rant as much as you need to. None of us who know you will believe for a moment that your son's illness is your fault. It's so unfortunate that there are still people who believe that, what an awful thing for you to hear!

I'm certain that in the case of ADHD there's absolutely NO blame to be laid at your door, Siobhan.

Is there any chance of you moving back to Ireland and your family in the future?

A lot more needs to be done about raising awareness of ADHD. I knew someone years ago who had a child ill with it and not many people knew about it here and people just kept saying her child was just bad and it was an American newly defined illness that did'nt exist. She was an exceptional parent and we helped her establish her charity in support of children with ADHD. Not sure if it still is around. You sound like a good caring parent to me who has lots of love and time for her son. it's not easy for a parent to see their child have an illness. My daughter has been ill for years and you just have to find the strength to be there when they need you. My daughter feels she is loved and it gets her through and she is happy. So all you can do is love him like you already do and get through this together.

Big thank you for all your kind words. I just needed to vent. I have to say the help I am getting here in Germany is fantastic. They are looking to see if my son can be transfered to a day clinic so he can be home by 5 every night so it is a step forward. So much stress the last few days with meetings with social workers and therapist. I should stop reading english forums as that is where they say it is not real. What I didn't know is that a lot of people in uk claim their kids have adhd as they can claim benifits..... that's crazy and can understand now why so many claim it is bad parenting. These people who claim extra benefits just make it hard for real cases. My son has had testing done over 3 years before he was diagnose and thankfully is currently not on medication.

Heard a true story today on the news which gave my faith in human nature a boost. Recently a young female uni student had been out for the night and wanted to get a taxi back home . She discovers she has lost her purse . As she was stood on the street wondering what to do ,in the knowledge she needed £15 for a taxi ,a homeless man sleeping rough asked her if she was alright. She explained what had happened and that she would walk back. The man now known to her as Robbie said it was not safe ,put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a handful of change , money he'd collected during the day. A few pounds I guess and offered it to her, all he had got in the world. She thanked him ,declined and managed to get a taxi and I suppose pay at her destination. She was so moved by Robbie's actions, decided to raise money for the homeless . thinking a target of a few hundred pounds. In the end she raised £29.000 and still continues with her mission. Brought a tear to my eyes hearing the story .So many lessons for us all to learn from Robbie and the young lass's actions....:)..

Hav'nt slept for two days have the investigation interview tomorrow with the second investigator they brought in after getting shot of the first one. This is after the organisation I work for whistleblew on the NHS with me as the main witness. Its all a farce if you ask me. They are determined to let people off scot free and cover up and somehow make me into the guilty party. Apparently they have got 10 witnesses against me. What a surprise ! I dont know why I am even bothering to go through the whole interview process again when it is such a stich up. Its been eight months now since the serious complaint went in. But i can't give up as its not my nature not to see something until the end. I live in hope that someone will see the truth for what it is at some stage. Now I will try and get some sleep.

It went so horribly wrong. The investigator had made her judgement before she came. I was with her for over 4 hours and half hours with just a 10 min break still have not had any lunch and still at work. Cant go home for my kids to see me like this. i am crying at my desk. It was pure torture watching her dismiss a whole file of evidence and accept the 15 witnesses against me. My staff team said I should have walked out but I kept hoping she would believe me at one point. I don't know how I am going to get through this nightmare.

I'm appalled that you had to sit and endure the third degree for over four hours, only for the investigator to dismiss your evidence. It must have been an incredibly stressful experience and I'm not surprised you're tearful - anyone would be. :(

Cold callers!

You can register with the Telephone Preference Service (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html) which will supposedly stop most cold callers, but I've heard it doesn't always work.

If nothing else works you can get a little call blocker device like these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=call+blocker&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Acall+blocker). I no longer have a landline and I can block numbers on my mobile, but I'd definitely get a call blocking device if I still had a landline. I've heard good things about them but haven't tried one myself.

Get well soon, Swmc! :)

Perdita

Always amazes me how they get hold of your number, I had to get a new mobile as I lost my old one, so new number, no big deal, only had contact with a handful of people here which were quickly informed of new number. Yet I get calls from strange numbers but when I ask if the caller speaks English, they say NO so I immediately say end the call but do wonder how they got hold of my number

Glen1

As I understand quite a few landline numbers are sold on by companies from whom purchases may have been made online . If I've disclosed say a email address I won't disclose a landline number, use a moblle number or make up a landline number . If you need to be contacted let a company email.

Agree Dazzle , but may be easier to control mobile incoming , and emails. The landline contact late at night and early hours hard to control and a bigger nuisance . Also, sometimes those obscure little tick boxes requesting no details to be passed on when placing internet orders very easy to miss.

Deliberately so, and I've noticed that some companies even obfuscate things further by making it so that you need to tick one box and leave another empty if you don't want to be contacted. It's so sneaky!! :thumbsdow

Selling on people's personal details is big business these days. :wall:

Only for an hour though as I am not very good with museums! My friend has displayed a very posh tiffin from India.
