Well right now I am in a hotel room in Galveston, Texas, trying to stop procrastination and get on with righting an essay on Medusa :)

I am still working full-time, doing a part-time classics degree with the OU and so busy that I rarely watch TV let alone post on Soapboards, but I lurk every now and again :D

Glad to hear you are still with us. A classics degree indeed. I wouldn't have thought Galveston as the cradle of Civilisation. There's obviously another attraction

I am only in Galveston for the week, and it is really historic (by Texan standards!). Why, the Galvez Hotel is over 100 years old, y'all, and the Tremont is one of the 100 Historic Hotels of America.

Houston, that concrete jungle of a place, is also a hot bed of the arts. The Houston Museum of Fine Arts is an AMAZING place, fabulous antiquities and tremendous impressionist gallery. I didn't see the rest of I would have been there all week. Ok, it is not of the standard of the National Gallery and British Museum in London, but it is definitely superior to the NGS, which I love.

The 'other attraction' Alan, is spending some time with my husband. He is at an off site meeting here all week, and it is a nice place for me to get some work done and then spend the evening with him and a bunch of his colleagues. Currently he seems to be home one week in three, if that, so it has been nice. I am flying back via Heathrow tomorrow though, on my own.

I've been spending the last few days trying to save an 18th century farmhouse in Clacton from being demolished by our local vandals, better known as the council: http://www.clactonandfrintongazette.co.uk/news/9997153.Historic_building_doomed_as_bulldozers_loo m/?ref=mmsp

Just heard that the council have told the owners not to proceed with demolition on two grounds.
1. I have applied to English Heritage for listing, so they should wait until the outcome of that has been decided.
2. Someone else has complained that there are bats in the building and they are not allowed to demolish a building with bats in (as they are a protected species) without a licence which they don't have.

We're not out of the woods yet but it has given us time.

Haven't been here for a while, I do pop in for a nose now and again, just so busy with work, it's all I seem to do. Currently trying to Christmas shop for my boyfriend, but he is SOO expensive to buy for, so I am stressing like mad. Other than that, same old different day, work, eat, sleep, work, eat, sleep, but someone's got to do it :) I hope everyone is well!! xxx

Oh my no I haven't been kidnapped by aliens or jailed for stalking Kiefer (Yes I still love him) I know I haven't been on here for weeks & weeks & weeks but I haven't been up to anything exciting honest. It's just work has been really stressful the last couple of months and I have struggled to find the time to come on here. I'll try and make it quick for those who don't know me.

I work for a college in Edinburgh. Up until October there were three colleges in the city. One college had two campuses. A couple of years ago the Government (That idiot Salmond) decided that it would be a good idea to merge the three colleges into one. From the 1st October we are now Edinburgh college. In the last year there has been a lot of changes. due to the merge there had to be staff cuts to save money. A huge voluntary severance deal was offered and they got rid of almost 100 members of staff over the 4 campuses 69 in the one I work. We still have to loose about another 100 before next summer. Our campus had to deal with a double whammy as we still had a large Senior Management Team to get rid off as the other college had made their staff cuts two years ago.

We are now at the stage that we have a new Principal. The new six Senior Management Team will be announced next week and that leaves 44 ex big wigs to fight it out for 18 jobs. Meanwhile you have front-line staff like myself having to do Managers jobs on a cleaners wage. I tell you I will be glad when the New Year comes I know there has to be loads of new changes but the quicker they are implemented the better. There is just so much bickering and uncertainty going on at the moment.

Away from work not much changes on the home front. Marley is 14 now 5ft 9inches tall. Size 7 feet growing more beautiful every day and as sharp as a tack. We had a lovely holiday in August in Gran Canaria. My niece-in-law is pregnant again she is due in June, but she hasn't been well with a flu virus and tonsillitis, also Skye who's 2 was in hospital for a week with pneumonia. She had two viruses RSV and Adeno to fight. I was babysitting my other nieces boy Riley last Saturday. Riley is almost 14 months old and run rings around me.

That's my moan over. My chest is clear. Thanks for listening love you all.

Thank you to all of you who listen to my rants. It is most appreciated, I don't know what I would do without you all. No news on yet who the new big bosses are but there are a few rumours flying around. I have made a decision that after the Summer and the knew Senior Management Team and changes have been implemented. If there are no improvements regarding my support or lack of from my line-manager or the jobs I do. I'm going to the Union & HR. Let them sort it out. If I shoot myself in the foot in the process, well then so be it.

It's been about six months since I was last here, so I thought I'd pop in and see how everyone is going and update you about my life.

So I found a job in September 2012 after a year of unemployment. I started on three days a week, minimum wage as a secretary for a small company that sells aftermarket campervan accessories. Another woman was taken on to do the other two days; the owner has had problems in the past with hiring somebody full time only for them to not turn up to work the day after payday, so he wanted a security net.

After about five weeks, this other woman sent me a message on facebook saying the boss was sexually harassing her and what should she do about it. I tried to be neutral, as I knew I would get the other two days if she left, but she decided not to go back. I immediately got promoted to full time. A few weeks later, the boss asked me what my future plans were; he wanted me to stay with the company and he was impressed with my hard work and skills. He spoke to the accountant and after only 7 weeks there, I got a permanent contract and 1% of all monthly sales. I was still on a 12 week probation period so it was pretty good to get that.

Things are going really well at work :) I'm in line for a pay rise in a few months so I'm looking forward to that. My boss went to Turkey on business in December and left me to run the shop for ten days. That was both scary and exciting, but by the end of the week I was much more confident in dealing with customers and my staff. The boss is hardly in the office during the day now, so I'm in charge of the office and workshop.

Long term I'm not sure how long I'm going to be there for. We're setting up a couple of sister businesses and the boss eventually wants me to manage them all whilst he goes back to Turkey to retire (he's only 35!). The experience I'm getting now is really good if I do decide to move on in a few years. Some days are boring and I think "I'm worth better than answering the phone and emails" but then I think that I can't move on until I get all this experience and I wouldn't get this opportunity so early on in many other businesses.

I really am grateful to my boss for giving me a job. It may only be secretarial work but it's given me something to live for. I was in a huge hole of depression when he gave me this job and now I'm so much better. I have structure in my life, I don't worry about not being able to afford food and my relationship with my family has improved immensely.

I'm still in an off/on relationship with Lawrence, the son of one of my closest friends. It's been going on about two and a half years, but just recently things have started to change for the better. I know on/off doesn't sound like much, but I don't want to be with anyone else. If he asked me to marry him, I'd elope and get married the next day. I called it off in August and slept with somebody else and I felt awful. We had some huge arguments but I realised then that I wanted to marry him. I haven't told him this as I don't want to scare him off as I don't know what he thinks is going to happen long term. He lives a couple of hours away and has a good job there. I've got a job and a place here.

What else? Well I'm going to finally get my own place in a couple of months. I've been sharing a house or flat since I was 18 and I need my own space. I'm hoping the housing agency will accept my application and by the end of March, I should be living in my own place, alone :D I'm so looking forward to it; it will be one of my first big personal achievements and I can't wait.

I think that's about it for now. I hope everyone is doing well, wherever they are :)

Hey Kath!
My God, I must have my head in the sand or something, I hadn't heard about the merger going on in further education in Edinburgh. You should think about registering with jobs.ac.uk for jobs in higher education too - Heriot-Watt is not far from you at all, and Napier too.

I can't believe that Marley is 14! What is she hoping to do? Is she in the first year for this curriculum for excellence thing that is being implemented in high schools?

I have been so busy it is unreal, work, uni, family (although both my boys are at uni now and live in Edinburgh one at the halls and one in a flat). I had flu just before Christmas and am really behind with my reading - I have a paper to hand in by 17th January and am panicking big time. I got a ridiculously good mark (91%) for my last paper on the reception of the Hippolytus and Phaedra myth over time and I think that this has increased the pressure, although I am doing it for fun, lol, so it is silly really.

So back to work tomorrow after 3 weeks (combined sickness and holidays) off. Can't wait (long enough!)

I need to rant cause I am so friking annoyed.. Saturday before christmas 2 friends of Ben set fire to a barn near us.. from the moment I saw the fire, I knew which one of the friend did it as he tried 2 weeks before hand to burn down our church and failed. The other little boy is just a sidekick.. he follows anyone. He explained that he was just there and tried to stop it but the other boy is a bully and went ahead and did it and then called over to our house to play with my son (thankfully Ben said no as he would have been blamed due to his history). Anyway, the bully boy comes to our door on Saturday with his sidekick and asked to play with Ben.. Ben asked straight way why he burn the barn and he said he didn't that the other guy had matches and a lighter and he was the one who tried to stop it.. My boyfriend told him to stop talking crap and get away from the door.. Now the mother of the boy wrote us a letter saying why did we call him a liar.. He didn't do anything and he even called the firemen (bull as he came to our house and then 30 mins later was found in the village)... She is saying her son is a good little boy and we are evil for letting Ben play with the sidekick and not him.

what she doesn't know is that her son has been swearing at everyone, smoking in our street, chucked our cat over a wall, has said he wanted to kill a girl and I have been told that he carried a lighter with him always.. I don't want to get into a fight with this woman cause she is the type "not my son, he wouldn't do that". She is totally blind to what her son does.. he is 7 years old and watches SouthPark and plays Resident Evil on his xbox.. I am so annoyed and don't know what to do about this email.. We informed the school about the incident with our cat, the trying to burn the church and speaking about killing a girl.. They said they have many more incidents by him and also complaints by the girl this fecker has said he wanted to kill..

sorry for the rant.. I just needed to get it out of my system.

Oh my god, that child sounds like an absolute monster!! I can't believe he's only 7! To be honest if his mother won't believe anything he has been up to, there isn't much hope for him. Keep your child away from him and if she kicks off just shut the door in her face and don't get into any argument with her. Also keep any communication she sends to you just in case.

I think there will be a prison cell waiting for him in as few years!

If the school know all this, Shiv, what are they doing about it?

Siobhan
08-01-2013, 07:03
If the school know all this, Shiv, what are they doing about it?

They have to follow a process.. 1st is the child is assessed by the school psychologist and then the case is referred to the social services. At the moment it is all hearsay but they are not stupid and know how he is as a child.. He think he just doesn't know the difference between wrong and right and as his parent don't seem to care, he will continue to way he is.

When Ben had his problems, they followed the same process but unlike this boy's parents, we worked with the school, spoke to social services and ben is now in a clinic getting treatment for his issue and will not return to normal school until his behaviour has improved. School is still working with us and we are making progress.

Did they give you all the opportunities to improve your work though? Sufficient training - either a course or in-house? Did you discuss your progress with your line manager on a regular basis? You should have been given every chance to improve

Well, I have had a very stressful year last year. Decided to move back to UK, get a job, place and all that. Had several job interviews but when I got there, was told that some jobs advertised as full time were not, permanent posts were for 6 or 9 months only, for one full time position I was told that depending on candidates, they might make the job a shared one. I got so stressed out that I decided to stay with other half who has taken early retirement and move to Spain. I would have liked to pay some more NI contributions as I still have a long while before I get a pension but rather than sit in a small place and pay all those expenses involved with setting up a new home in UK, I shall make do with a small pension when I get it and enjoy the Spanish sunshine in the meantime. Arrived midday today and sat with friends outside a bar in glorious warm sunshine and temperature of 18C. :D

I had such a good day yesterday that I thought I had to share it!

Firstly, it was my grandson Harry's 6th birthday, so we went and helped him celebrate at a small party for family only (his choice). It was wonderful seeing him so happy opening and playing with his new presents and blowing out the candles on his birthday cake etc. etc.

When we got back from that I went down to my theatre (the West Cliff, Clacton-on-Sea - I am chairman of the board of trustees that runs the theatre for those who don't know) where I met Fairport Convention as they arrived to set up and do their sound test. I first saw Fairport back in September 1968 and they instantly became my favourite band (I was very into folk music) and have remained so to this day, so to actually have them at the West Cliff and to get to meet them after being a fan for 45 years...well, you can imagine how I felt!

I then settled down to watch the show with Linda (my wife), also a big fan. It was fantastic, lived up to all my expectations. But even better, during the performance they actually dedicated one of their songs to me as one of their longest standing fans and, unbeknown to me, they had signed a poster for me which they gave me after the show. What an evening!

Any one know how long it should take for a p45 to arrive, my ex employers still not sent it and said it will be a further two weeks. Considering I finished on the 11th feb surely they should have it for me by now. Just proving once again they are a shambles of an organisation.

It's really annoying me, got a job centre again later. Hoping it won't stop me signing in as I really am broke!!

An employer can issue it at any time, it's all done online then you get the copy printed out. It just depends when the employer wants to put the information in, print it out and post it. I work for a small business so I guess it's easier for our accountant to do it quickly than if we had 100 employees.

Another two weeks sounds a bit excessive. Ring them up every day, twice a day, and you'll get it within a week.

My niece runs a Karate club in Norway where she is living now and she assists in the one she setup in Ireland. The job rejections just keep on coming! :(

Am not getting to down though, having some serious thinking time and reassessing my options. The thought or working back in the legal field after what they have done to me is just not appealing at the moment. I need to seriously think about what I want to do. I think I need a break so just going to try and get work anywhere away from law and see what happens.

My first experience with ambulance service in Spain .. I slipped and fell with my leg left pulling forward, must have torn muscle, I am in tears, agony and screaming with pain ... waiting for friend to come look after my totally bewildered puppies who are wondering what is wrong with me and ambulance as I need to be stretchered ... the slightest move is agony

What a fantastic service, I am ashamed that I probably would not have got this treatment in UK ... ambulance here within 10 minutes, 2 crew, 2 doctors, one that spoke a little English. Looks like I tore a fibre in the muscle of the back thigh, got 2 injections, feel now as if I had a bottle of vodka but pain has eased so much. If pain gets worse, I have to go to hospital around 30 miles away, if not, medical centre tomorrow for check-up. Thank you Spanish medical services for great service!!!

More praise for the Spanish medical services and Maria, a total stranger to me but able to speak more English than I speak Spanish. Had to go medical centre for follow up .. struggled with crutches up the stairs to the medical centre when an elderly gentleman came over and assisted me. Then two English ladies that were just leaving got the security guy to get me a wheelchair and then Maria, who was also just leaving heard us talk and asked me whether I speak Spanish, I said not really. She stayed with me, got the security guy to get her to the front of the queue at reception, got me a priority appointment with the doctor and stayed with me until it was established that the doctor speaks English. I tried to pay her but she refused to accept anything ... Muchas gracias Maria xxx
Had to go hospital about 40 miles away for x-ray, was x-rayed within 15 minutes of registration, another good half hour wait and I was seen by the doctor who told me nothing broken, muscle torn, prescribed me medication and got a nurse to bandage the leg. Muchas gracias Sta Lucia hospital xx

It's been agesss.

I'm on placement at the moment, loving it. Can't believe how quickly it's gone by. Making a cake for Tuesday for one of the other student's birthdays, and went shopping this morning to get some cake stuff. Was also looking for chocolates with coffee in to put on top, but couldn't find any. Typical, I seem to find loads of coffee ones in boxes of chocolate when I don't want them. Does anyone happen to know any chocolate collections with a lot of coffee ones in them?

Speaking of chocolate, I recently discovered Dairy Milk's new Marvellous Creations  It has a smarties type sweet and some fruit jellies in I think, would recommend it to all. It's on offer at the moment in the W H Smith I usually go in, not sure if the offer will be on everywhere or not.

Loving the weather today :D and I think this was meant to be the worst day of the whole weekend. Shame it wasn't like this last night when I arrived at a BBQ. Good to see people again though.

Have a good bank holiday weekend all :)

Good luck Katy - definitely an essential.

Warning to all: Do not get the last train home. It will be delayed and the next day after 4 and a half hours sleep is NOT fun.

Sure was, Katy. I got some nice pics and a video as well. Only down side was when I got home I heard a certain woman I've had my eye on for a while has started seeing someone.

Good luck laptop shopping. I'm also looking for work while studying criminology. It's a real nightmare job hunting! Even retail work seems difficult to get these days!!

Sounds nice :)

I understand and echo your frustration. It's an incredibly sad state of affairs regarding to jobs in recent years. I guess all you can do is continue to apply and eventually you'll persevere. Maybe upload your CV to CV Library, I use that site and it seems quite good. Also GumTree is worth a look if you want something to tie you over until you can really find something to settle in to.

Kim
09-05-2013, 18:27
If possible, maybe try sending your applications to a friend/family member to look over before you send them. Sometimes we don't see mistakes in our own work no matter how long we spend checking it, so that might be worth a go if you haven't already. Also, spending longer on fewer applications is recommended in the current climate; with unemployment where it is, employers focus on picking the very best applications to take to interview, as they have more than enough suitable candidates to shortlist from.

Good luck :)

Another thing is if you have done various jobs, focus on your experience from the job you did that is relevant to the one you are applying for but introduce experience that might be useful in the job you would like to get. Good luck :)

Katy, I can give you the thing I tried when I came to germany to get a job.
1) register with all the jobs sites (I found stepstone to be one of the best, followed by monster)
2) Any position you think you can do, apply for it.
3) At interview, pick 2 or 3 old position/projects and when asked a question, fit this into your answers. (this is helpful as you don't have to think about so many things you did. If you know 2 or 3 really well it give focus to area of expertise.)
4) It is easy to find a job when you have a job so apply locally to work in a shop or volunteer with a charity to keep yourself busy.

Hope some of these help you

Thanks Shiv, there really helpful tips. I think monster is a great site, they have helped improve my cover letters as that was something that I was really struggling with at the start.

I am applying for everything, about 4 - 5 a day some take a lot longer than others but I am going on the basis that hopefully the sheer amount I do, something will come out of it!

thank you, am trying everything so theres got to be some good news at the end of the road!

I went to Wembley yesterday, not the result I was after but we were beaten by a better side on the day, journey home was a nightmare, traffic on m6 was a joke as someone thought it a good idea to have only one lane open so it took up an hour and a half to go 2 junctions! good banter though to help pass the time. Im just really hoping that Mancini will stay but all the news out at the moment it does not look promising.

Helped out at a Charity day yesterday, wasn't as bad as I expected - they put me on the BBQ and I can't cook! Cakes are about my limit. Made this cake for the day also

Also went for an Indian afterwards, so it wasn't a bad day at all.

Having to share all photos via Instagram, Facebook and Twitter at the moment, as I use my phone or iPad. I will have to follow Katy in getting a new laptop I think, as my netbook seems to be slowly giving up.

Good luck. Remember to take both parts of your provisional with you when you go for your theory. I remember a guy at the centre when I took mine. He wanted the quickest appointment he could possibly get, so he'd come the best part of 40 miles as his local centre was full. He couldn't sit the test as he forgot his paper counterpart.

Really feel like baking a cake today but I don't need it until Tuesday so I'd better not.

Looking forward to Monday - meeting up with my friend. She wants to go to a buffet restaurant 30 miles away

Katy

Is there not any buffet restaurants nearer by!! That's pretty far.

It's not the first time of taking the theory have failed twice before but I will be sure to remember the paper part!! At least I have enough time to revise for it now. Am not failing a third time.

There are a few, but my friend has been on their website and has taken a liking to this one. I was surprised to find that quite a few people that live round my way have been there.

Best of luck Katy, the theory test is harder now that they don't publish the exact bank of test questions. One of my friends passed the theory on her third go, it was the Hazard Perception that she struggled with.

Loving the Bank Holiday Weekend :D Nineties songs on the radio, so a bit of a relive your childhood weekend for me. My friend went down to Swanage for the day today. I used to go there a lot from 2001 until 2006, so wished I was going as well. Hopefully I will get there this summer, as we still have the boat.

Got a cupcake maker for £6 from Asda today, as it was in the sale. Baking for a cake sale on Wednesday so I'm looking forward to trying it out. Think I'll be doing 2 cakes and some cupcakes. Not looking forward to getting on the train with those so much

Hope the weather surprises us tomorrow so that we can have a BBQ.

Haven't got any cake cases small enough to go in my cupcake maker :( so the traditional oven way it was. Took over the kitchen this afternoon to make a start while listening to the radio.

Realised that I didn't have any Vanilla Extract so went to the shop to buy some. I managed to get there and back not realising that I had my cardigan on inside out. Knew I should have taken the car

On the radio note: The new Admiral advert just makes me think that Peppa Pig is about to start!

I am indeed. One more cake to go this evening. Thankfully as I'm starting to ache from being on my feet for a good few hours today. Lemon cupcakes earlier went a bit wrong but I managed to resurrect them.

Going to attempt Chocolate and Peanut Butter flapjacks tomorrow evening. Tried them at a cake sale I bought from and they were great, so I googled the recipie.

Hope tomorrow isn't too bad Katy.

haha Siobhan!

I have had an amazing weekend! Was in Croke Park for the Semi Final of the Footballl Championship. It was my first visit! I was not disapointed, Mayo were awesome in both the minors and the seniors. Things didnt go there way at the start and it was physically tough but the lads didnt give up and got the turn around we needed in the second half! Dublin was a sea of Red and Green! Was nice to meet a number of cousins as well briefly before the game. From the looks of things I doubt there was any one left in Mayo!! They were all at the match. Flew home last night so spending the day recoving making the most of not being in work.

Not sure if most of you know but my son Ben was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago and we have been struggling with the school to get something done to help him with his work. He has aggression with this also so for the past year the school solution was send him home. He wasn't learning anything and he has suffered alot because of this. Kids in his class are afraid of him and nobody plays with him during breaks. As parent, we have done everything we could, therapy, 10 week course in a day clinic and when I was out of work I spent 2 months sitting in his classroom with him. He also takes medication. After the 10 week course Ben behaves a lot more at home but school is a different thing. He still feels left out and alone there.

Yesterday we had a meeting with the school and with the authorities to discuss was has to be done. The woman from the authorities is a real ball breaker. She told the school sending Ben home in not an answer. She assessed the school and told them that they don't have the capability to work with kids with ADD so she has gotten Ben into another school near us (they have a second teacher in the classes so if a child misbehaves, they can go outside and calm down), she has given the school an individual plan for Ben and has a help teacher for 7 hours a week to do assessment to find out what other things Ben needs for day to day work (kids with ADD tend to forget a lot of stuff and have low concentration).. I am so happy with this woman as we feel, as parents, we are finally getting things done for Ben to get him help that he so much needs.

Fingers crossed that Ben can finally get a proper education and make friends that stand by him if he does get angry and not run away screaming as the kids in his class do now.

I hate men! Basically have no close friends any more because they either replaced me with uni mates or replaced me with possessive waste of spaces :(

Awww Kim, only matter of time before they realise and get back with you or you get your own man, I am sure :)

Hey Perdy!

I am procrastinating!

I have an essay comparing a 13th-century icon to a 15th-century Van der Weyden due in tomorrow and have got up early to finish it off.

How is life with you?

Trin x

Very well, thank you, Trin, now living in Spain and enjoying it very much, love my two rescue dogs who keep me very busy and fit as I don't have a garden so need to take them for lots of walks. Good luck with your essay x :)

Sounds wonderful!

The dark days of winter are here, and it is frosty this morning; a milder winter climate sounds very appealing.

Essay will get done, they all do, my problem is that I am a perfectionist, good enough does not cut it - I want a distinction for every essay, and a first over all - I am on target so far :)

Have you retired, or are you working from Spain? I love the idea of cutting back on work and spend my time travelling and studying :)

Wow, Spanish seems so fast, I cannot imagine being able to follow it, so well done you.

Good luck with everything :)
