Her Coronation Street character Maria Conner regularly kicks up a stink in Weatherfield, so Samia Ghadie had no trouble dealing with a giant toilet in a bid to prevent household sewage floods.

The actress posed next to the oversized latrine at Manchester's Trafford Centre for United Utilities campaign 'Think You Before You Flush', which aims to raise awareness of what can and can't be sent down the loo.

Ghadie, who has a 3-year-old daughter named Freya with ex-husband Matthew Smith, also called for wet wipe manufacturers to improve packaging labelling so consumers know not to flush them.

"You'd think it would be obvious to put toddler wipes in the bin, but when the packaging says 'flushable' it's no wonder people get confused," she said.

"You've got to bin these items because the last thing you want is a blockage and a flood."

One in every 530 homes in the North West floods every year because unsuitable items are flushed down the toilet, costing United Utilities £13 million.

"This year alone we have had to deal with 28,000 blockages across the North West and most of these are caused by sewer abuse," Tony Griffiths, wastewater network manager at United Utilities, revealed.

Ghadie is currently at the centre of a major Coronation Street storyline involving Maria falling in love with gay friend Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou).

Ex-Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel has claimed that his former show suffered a dip after he left.

However, the actor - who played the evil Frank Foster until March - believes that the ITV soap has since improved.

Revealing that he watches Corrie "religiously", he told The Sun: "I think it had a dip but it feels in very good shape right now."

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old praised writers for the recent return of Ken Barlow's ex Wendy Crozier.

"I really enjoyed the Wendy Crozier storyline. It wasn't obviously done," he gushed.

"There was a three-handed episode the other day between Wendy, Rita and Deirdre which I thought was just classic Corrie."

Deirdre finally realised Wendy's deceit last week when she and Rita visited Ken's former mistress at her home.

Of the soap's departing producer, Lancel added: "I was very pleased to be there during Phil Collinson's reign."

The star, who is starring in a Beatles play in Liverpool as manager Brian Epstein, revealed that "a few of the cast" will attend the first show tonight (November 15).

Coronation Street's Paula Lane has said that she fears co-star Jack P Shepherd could play a prank at her wedding.

The Weatherfield actress, who has been dating Tom Shaw for nearly ten years, suggested that her on-screen husband has played practical jokes on her before.

Speaking to The Sun about her big day, Lane revealed: "Hopefully some of the cast will come for a glass of bubbly. Katherine Kelly and Catherine Tyldesley are great mates so they'll be there.

"And of course Jack P Shepherd. I just hope he doesn't play any pranks - I wouldn't put it past him."

The newspaper claims that the couple, who announced their engagement last December, will set a date for 2014.

Reflecting on the differences between her and character Kylie Platt, she commented: "Kylie wouldn't expect a proposal like mine. David did it by text message. Myself and Kylie are worlds apart."

However, the star acknowledged: "Sometimes Kylie does emerge, bad drivers really anger me and in those moments my friends are like, 'Ooh, Kylie's creeping out'."

"We are delighted to be working with Compare The Market as a partner for Coronation Street," said Simon Daglish, Group Commercial Director of ITV.

"This is a long-term commitment from both parties around two of the most exciting and loved brands in the UK, which we believe will become the benchmark for partnerships going forward."

Paul Galligan, Managing Director of Compare The Market, added: "Coronation Street is one of Britain's most entertaining and best loved TV shows and so we are delighted to be partnering with such a prestigious programme.

"We will be working closely with ITV to ensure this is a model partnership, utilising both on and off-air opportunities to take our brands to customers in new and exciting ways."

The fully-comprehensive sponsorship package, negotiated by ITV Commercial and Newcast, ZenithOptimedia's sponsorship and content division, includes broadcast, online, mobile and licensing elements.
Absolutely love the clips, so much better than previous adverts for the sponsors

Coronation Street's Alan Halsall has had his car stolen from his driveway.

The soap actor, who plays Weatherfield mechanic Tyrone Dobbs, awoke at his Manchester home to discover his Range Rover Sport had been driven away.

The culprits managed to enter the vehicle without sounding the alarm.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the theft had been reported.

An insider told the Daily Star: "He was fuming, especially as it means they must have been sniffing around his house."

Halsall's Corrie alter ego will dominate the ITV serial's screen time, with Tyrone secretly marrying Kirsty so that he gains custody of his daughter, and starting an affair with close friend Fiz.
