If Max used the card and it was declined, surely the payment system would have a record of the card number and the bank would be able to trace who it belongs to etc.

Possibly but in soapland these things do not get followed up unless absolutely vital for the storyline .. like Alya being scammed out of all that money in the business account ... brief mentioning of her following a phone call from the bank and hey, all the money gone .. as producer I would have had a scene with the bank manager explaining how to stay safe and avoid these scams... but hey, they have brother Zeedan coming up with the money, (yes, I know, he is prime suspect of being the scammer but even so) and nothing else, this is so important as a lot of people fall for these phone calls.

I hope that the Zeedan storyline will explain how he got the money and maybe more hints on how these scams happen will be shown
