    Alison Slater (Denise Welch)

    Denise Welch has joined the cast of EastEnders.

    The actress will appear as Alison Slater - the mother of transgender character Kyle Slater - on the soap later this spring.​

    "I'm thrilled to be part of such an iconic show. I have friends in the cast and can't wait to start," Denise told the The Mirror.

    Former Coronation Street star Denise Welch has joined the cast of EastEnders.

    The actress will appear as Alison Slater - the mother of transgender character Kyle Slater - on the soap later this spring.

    "I'm thrilled to be part of such an iconic show. I have friends in the cast and can't wait to start," Denise said.

    "It's so exciting! I have several friends on the show and it's a great crowd so I can't wait to get started."

    The former Loose Women star added: "It's a short stint but such a powerful role and I'm thrilled to be taking it on."

    The actress is only set for a short stint on the show, which will reveal her character struggled to accept her son's choice to transition​.

    Welch appeared as Corrie's Natalie Barnes between 1997 and 2000 and has also starred in Holby City and Waterloo Road.

    Well how refreshing to see a genuine northerner be in a EE show! but how long will it be before she is slated and not be able to stay longer than the proposed time that is planned?
    So many faces appear for a couple of episodes and vanish!

    Denise is a damn good gritty actress and capable of good acting, I think it would be a refreshing change to see an actress who will no doubt show good human performances.
    This could be a really good story, I am hoping that the writers are doing their research and finding out how difficult it is in "real" life for parents to discover that their offspring has such problems to overcome. I am liking KYle
