Mike Parr does what he paid to do. But I still dislike lowlife Ross Barton, however, just as I am completely meant to do, it seems... So does Ross Barton/Mike Parr get my vote? The answer to this is a really big no. Ross Barton is just a completely horrible guy for me, as he is just a total misfit in Emmerdale and will never be a success in life whilst he stays there, as far as I can see anyway.

Surely the fact that you find Ross Barton a low life which he is meant to be proves that Michael Parr is a good actor. Out of everyone on this board, you should be the one admiring Michael Parr. Instead you hate him (the actor)! Even going to the point of blaming him for the attacks in France because his character promotes violence.

The award is for the actor, not the character. I don't know whether your being stubborn on purpose or just don't get this!?
Aww, c'mon, keep up. You seem to be thinking even now like so last summer when Ross Barton was only "just a naughty scamp" back then. But he has now graduated since into being a totally dislikeable cold-blooded crazed guy who only failed to kill Robert because Ross's gun wasn't presumably powerful enough and Ross Barton seems to be just so rubbish at anything he tries. Let's really move on here and let reality shine on through! The actors are invisible if they are doing their jobs properly. We all need to talk about Ross Barton the character. Lately Ross Barton has been just awful on TV. He's just grunted at times and just ignored cries from Moses many times already. I'm really waiting for my wishlist 2016 reveal that Charity has played "cuckoo in the nest" and has dumped another guy's baby on Ross to take care of for now! This would be just a terrific hoot! Ross is such a repeated fail in life really, why not have this "other father for Moses" storyline happen too in a while sometime later and give every TV viewer a real big belly laugh?

I really wouldn't want any daughter of mine to associate ever with the like of Rubbish Ross!

I posted the latest ITV Emmerdale video previews here. For the episode on Monday 11 Jan, even Cain himself has a script where he says :"I expect that from Ross. He's a lowlife."

Look, most people have now seemed to have concluded that Ross Barton is a lowlife. You really need to keep up and watch close. I post spoilers and latest stuff here all of the time. If you follow me then you'll be fine. I really do know usually what I'm talking about here so just trust me on this! haha!

I'm really happy to help here! Anyone only needs to ask! I'm sure I'll have a answer somewhile later... haha!

I'm not even going to give this a proper reply. I and many others like Ross as a character, nothing you say will change that. It is a TV SHOW, I'm not sure what gives you the right to tell us to "move on". Why not dedicate your free time to the characters you like rather than coming in here and telling us how "rubbish" Ross is? It's quite childish.

Interview : Emmerdale's Michael Parr on NTA's nomination & what's next for Ross...

National Television Awards 2016: Michael Parr on Emmerdale’s chances and which Corrie star he fancies

Has there been an actor quite so busy in 2015 as Michael Parr?

The Emmerdale star has seen his character Ross Barton embark on an affair with his brother’s fiancee Debbie, end up left for dead, dangle his sibling off of a bridge, shoot Robert Sugden and rob a warehouse with Aaron Livesy among other things.

After sweeping the boards at the Inside Soap Awards, he has his eye on the big prize as he is nominated in the NTAs for Best Dramatic Performance.

We caught up with him for a chat on why Emmerdale deserves victory this year and what’s coming up next for his troubled character…

You had huge success at the Inside Soap Awards – can you nail this one too?

I don’t know to be honest. This is obviously on a much larger scale. I had a great evening and did very well at the Inside Soaps but EastEnders had a very good year at the NTAs last year – it’s in London – but who knows, who knows? It’s very flattering to be shortlisted as everyone has done an equally good job in the show so to have been shortlisted is lovely.

Ross still has a massive fanbase, no matter what he does. How does that feel?

It’s quite reassuring – frustrating at times when I’m meant to be the bad guy – you’re not meant to like me! I really do have some of the best fans in the world. They’re lovely and I couldn’t be more grateful to have them.

What has been the highlight of a very busy year for Ross?

It was probably after the helicopter crash and everyone thought Ross had been killed. It had such a big reaction but I wasn’t expecting the petition to be started – I don’t think that’s ever happened before! I was obviously super grateful for that so have to say that was the biggest moment.

What is your favourite side of Ross to play?

You know, it’s always nice to push the audience away by being mean to Robert or Aaron – cos I’m immediately hated. It’s cute to work with little Arthur who plays Moses – he’s the smiliest kid in the world. I don’t think I’m ready for kids but when I work with him sometimes I think I can do it. It’s nice to push people away and then bring them back with the nice father stuff. He’s a three dimensional character at the end of the day.

What do you make of the competition in your category?

I do tune in to the other soaps – it would be foolish not to. You have to know how the other soaps are doing and what you’re up against and just admire their work. I appreciate how hard it is to do this job so have every respect for those guys. Danny Dyer – I have watched The Football Factory and The Business so many times and he was amazing in them. Ali King is brilliant in Corrie and I have the biggest crush on her too. So if I lose to her it’s swings and roundabouts!

Why does Emmerdale deserve the big prize this year?

Our work rate is a little higher – we do 5 episodes a week but also our writers come up with these big storylines and well rounded characters and manage to keep things both light and intense and don’t drag some storylines on. There are a lot of reasons we deserve it.

What can viewers expect next for Ross?

I’m not lying when I say I don’t actually know! I think the audience will be pleasantly surprised by how Ross will react to having his son. I don’t think he’ll ever change – and I hope he doesn’t.

There are big changes coming up at Emmerdale with the new producer Iain MacLeod coming in. Are you excited for what’s ahead?

Yeah – I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table. I’ve only heard good things about Iain. It’s a bit nerve wracking as its my first producer turnover. I can’t imagine 2016 will be as busy as 2015. I’m excited to hear his new ideas and to collaborate with him on them.

Telly Watcher, you missed the point once again about my post. I have no problems with you not liking Ross.

What I can't fathom is how you hate an actor for what their fictional character they portray does. We know now that you like Robert and that's fine but you criticise and believe that Michael Parr is responsible for violence in the real world. You even suggested the attacks in France!!!

Ryan Hawley doesn't get a mention by you for his acting as Robert, you mentioned recently that you only go by what characters do within the last 4 months. However, Robert was waving a gun around on New Year's Eve. That's more recent violence than Ross has done.

Finally you haven't acknowledged my point that the awards are for the actor NOT the character.

What a 12 months it's been for Ross Barton - a shooting, an arrest, an affair, a death and a miraculous resurrection! Yes, the baddest bad boy in the Dales has certainly been at the forefront of the biggest plotlines and actor Michael Parr has now been rewarded with a nomination in the Serial Drama Performance at this year's National Television Awards.

We caught up with the man himself to quiz him about all things Emmerdale, ask what's next for Ross and find out whether he really could be leaving the ITV soap...

Congratulations on the NTA nomination - you must be pleased?
It’s very flattering. And I feel like I’ve graduated somewhat. Last year, it was Best Newcomer, this year it’s Best Serial Drama Performance. However, it does feel like I’ve been thrown in at the deep end. Especially seeing as I'm up against Danny Dyer. No offence to the others, but he's a household name. There's some stiff competition there.

Ah, now Danny Dyer - he has, on occasion, referred to Emmerdale as 'The Farm', hasn't he?
Yes, but I think he did that tongue in cheek. I've been fortunate enough to meet him on two separate occasions and he's got a great sense of humour. I should probably stop bigging him up, but I don't think he meant us any harm when he said that. Still, it would be nice to get a victory over him. And maybe get him to hold the award while I went to the bar!

Was it a surprise to you that Ross was involved in so many plotlines last year, particularly the fact that he shot Robert?
Yes, it was a surprise to me. And I thought it was a brilliant idea when our producer at the time, Kate Oates, told me about it. I felt that it made the whodunit a lot more difficult to figure out because Ross wasn't a likely suspect. However, from what I saw on Twitter, a few people were saying, “Ross in ANOTHER storyline!”

So how do you react when the character comes in for criticism like that?
I really don’t pay any attention to it. I also get lots of compliments on social media and I can't acknowledge those either. Compliments go to your head and insults go to your heart. So I won't, for instance, sit there thinking about people who don’t think that my hair isn’t nice anymore. Or, at the opposite end, I won't go around thinking that I'm the most handsome actor ever. I can’t dwell on that kind of thing.

Yes, your hair did become a bit of a talking point last year when you had it cut short...
That was one of the most crazy moments in my career. I felt like shaking people and saying, 'it's just my hair. I'm there to act, so stop treating me like a piece of meat!' But whatever!

Now, we do need to clear up some recent comments which seemed to suggest that you might not be around when your co-star Charley Webb returns from maternity leave. So, are you leaving Emmerdale?
I wasn’t saying I was going anywhere immediately or that I have any plans to go. It was just an open way of saying "listen, I don’t know what the future holds for me in this show". We're on annual contracts, so there are no guarantees. If they decide to kill me off or whatever, then that could happen before Charley returns. We've got a new producer in Iain MacLeod and he might hate Ross's guts or me as an actor. I'm sure that's not the case, but who knows?

So your loyalties currently lie with the show?
Absolutely. Emmerdale has changed my life and I’m willing to put the work in and do whatever this show wants me to do.

How will the full-time return of Charity end up affecting Ross?
She’s such a devil. Ross is in over his head when it comes to Charity and I can’t see prison changing her. I'm just really excited to work with Emma Atkins. She’s lots of fun and she’s not afraid to make bold choices with her lines. She makes me up my game and I think we have a good dynamic on screen.

Do you want to carry on playing Ross as a bad boy or would you like to see him become a reformed character?

My biggest fear is that Ross would reform. I like him the way he is. We have a few bad guys on the show, but Ross is just a bit more of a lad than the rest of them. And I think a lot of the audience can relate to that. I don’t know how to word this without sounding big-headed, but I think lots of lads want to be like Ross and girls want to be with him.

Speaking of girls who want to be with Ross - who should his next love interest be? And bear in mind that his girlfriends end up either dead like Donna or leaving in tears like Debbie...

Well, now that you’ve said that, I don’t want him to be with anybody. It’s like the curse of working with Mike Parr! You either get killed or you have to leave the show. Though I’m going to blame Matthew Wolfenden for half of that because he’s the one responsible for getting Charley Webb pregnant. Personally, though, I think that Ross and Chrissie have a good dynamic. It's that pairing of the rich and the rough. She’s got all this money and he’s envious of that world, having come from a working class background. But who knows what’s going to happen.

And if Ross got together with Chrissie, then that surely fuel his feud with Robert?
Yes, I can’t see Ross letting this one go. He was tit for tat with Pete and I think it’ll be the same for Robert. But then I’ll have all the 'Robron' fans giving me grief all the time!

And, finally, can you give us quick tease of what Ross will be getting up to in the near future?

At the moment, Emma and Ross are getting very good at winding each other up. But what his mum is doing is for Ross’s own good. She knows that will Ross will regret it if he’s not in his baby’s life. And you’re going to be pleasantly surprised about how Ross takes to parenthood.

Nice little interviews and as suspected sounds like he is happy where he is. Nothing is guaranteed so sounds like he just takes one contract at a time. Like others aswell.

I like that he says fans will be pleasantly surprised about Moses. That sounds like a good thing. Opens up the fight with Charity too.

Shame Mike can't mention Robron without their fans throwing their toys out of the pram and making a huge issue out of nothing

Well after tonight's episode, whilst they are two different characters, much like him and Finn, maybe Kirin could be another male friend for Ross that we have suggested he needs in the past.

They've had 3 episodes together now.

1-Kirin asked Ross to cover for him when Kirin was scared to take Vanessa to hospital.
2-Ross drops Moses off for Belle to babysit. Kirin and Ross wind each other up.
3-Tonight, Ross and Kirin drink together talking about fatherhood.

Yeah, Kirin also hasnt got a proper male friend in the show, I can see this going the way of Kirin looking for some money and he starts working for Ross or something.
