Well she was younger then-more resilient??
And she wasnt with Marlon then !! But she
was with Ashley ( who looks& acts as old
as her Dad to me-but I know they have a lot
of fans as a couple)You make a valid point tho.
More seriously tho- I do think alcoholism
is a subject that bears coverage as it can
devastate lives( not just of the alcoholic)
emotionally job- wise and financially.
Whether a soap can do it justice is another
matter.
If it were caused mainly by lifes big problems
it might be easier to understand but from
what little I know - it seems sometimes its
that its relatively small things or nothing apparent
that tips the scales from someone who enjoys
a drink to becoming an alcoholic.
Have to see what reasons ED comes up with
in Laurels case.!
She seems to have had an unsettled childhood
and to have been daggers drawn with her mother.
Another theory?? the problems start buliding in
childhood .

Was it not Marlon's reaction to Donna's return to the village with April and his behaviour towards her after Donna's death that got Laurel drinking more ??
Yes- I think there are a lot of contributory
factors. And she wasnt very happy with Marlon
for some time prior to that.
Alcoholism a complex subject and nobody seems
able to really pinpoint causes.
When shown on other soaps usually the portrayal
of the alcoholic is good but dont really get to
the causes.
They are saying Laurels story will be a long
and complex one- if that happens then it
will reflect true life !

Round-up:
When Marlon rounds on Laurel and accuses her of being an alcoholic, she snaps and hits him hard across the face. Laurel agrees to see the doctor but is shocked when he refers her to a detox centre. Marlon relents and tries to tell her that he is proud that she is finally getting help – but is she being entirely truthful? When Harriet and Ashley realise that a bottle of wine is missing they fear the worst and it begins to look as if Marlon and Laurel’s marriage is over for good. As the Spencers make plans to move nearer to Sean, Kerry tells Dan that he needs to stick around if he is to support his family financially. But he is heartbroken to be losing Amelia. As he watches Ali and Ruby pack up the house, he comes to a decision. Moira deduces that Vanessa is pregnant when she sees her acting awkwardly around Adam and Victoria – and Adam is worried when Moira tells him that soon everyone will realise the truth. Finn is feeling low as Darren has found someone else, so Val suggests that he take himself off to Portugal for the summer and help Paul run his bar. When Bernice loses her watch she immediately suspects Tracy and calls Nicola in Dubai. Nicola is furious to hear that Tracy has moved in and hits the roof, telling Jimmy to get rid of her. Chas and Aaron’s evening out is interrupted by the presence of James and Emma. The atmosphere is frosty, but just how far will Emma go to hang on to her man?
