They've done it before though. Got a new Robert Sugden which will be interesting. I saw inside one of the soap magazines today he will stir things up, especially since Katie and Andy are getting remarried.

Emmerdale spoilers: show boss on Christmas 2014 and fresh danger for Charity

Andy and Katie to be spotlighted this festive season, while Charity will be punished further for her actions, reveals series producer Kate Oates

Emmerdale series producer Kate Oates has revealed that Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher) and Katie Addyman (Sammy Winward) will be taking centre stage for this year’s Christmas episodes

The pair, who recently reconciled on screen thanks to a surprise engagement, will feature heavily in what the show’s boss has described as a “traditional” festive season on the ITV soap.

“Rather than going for bells and whistles and explosions, we’re going to reward those viewers who’ve been watching the show for a really long time. We have these two characters in Andy and Katie who first got together when they were at school and they’re finally going to make their mark together. So what we’ll see is quite a traditional Emmerdale Christmas for a change,” Oates told RadioTimes.com at last night’s Inside Soap Awards.

Emmerdale recently announced that Robert Sugden would be returning later this year, now played by actor Ryan Hawley. And Robert’s reintroduction looks set to jeopardise the upcoming wedding of Andy and Katie: “He’s definitely going to stir things up,” confirmed Oates, referencing the fact that Andy and his adoptive brother have been at loggerheads ever since the two of them went to war over Kate’s affections back in 2004.

Oates also discussed the soap’s current storyline, which has seen Charity Macey (Emma Atkins) foil husband Declan’s plans to kill her at a remote countryside holiday retreat. But it looks like there's fresh danger ahead:

“Charity thinks she’s out of the woods, but she isn’t. I sometimes have a look at the comments from viewers on internet forums and people say that Charity hasn’t had her comeuppance and the producer has lied to us. And I sit there in my chair and smile! It might happen sooner rather than later. She’s definitely going to fall.”

Emmerdale delivered a surprise moment for fans in Wednesday night's episode (October 8) as Declan Macey's fate was finally revealed.

Declan, played by Jason Merrells, is still alive and has been biding his time to cause more trouble for his deceitful wife Charity.

The businessman went missing and was presumed dead after having a violent showdown with Charity out on a lake on their recent countryside holiday.

However, in the closing moments of Wednesday's episode, it was confirmed that Declan is still alive and is plotting his final revenge against Charity.

Declan was seen standing in front of a video camera holding up a recent newspaper report about the police search for him being called off.

Addressing the camera directly, he warned: "My name is Declan Macey and I'm very much not dead. But my wife Charity is going to wish I was."

Fans will now be left to speculate about when Declan will make his next appearance and whether he will return to the village to haunt Charity again.

As a mystery culprit will attack Charity and hold her captive next week, it seems that Declan will now be at the top of the suspect list.

Last week, Merrells confirmed that he had left Emmerdale after four years as Declan, but it would appear that his character's journey isn't quite over yet.

Meanwhile, Merrells has already confirmed his next TV project as he has joined the cast of new ITV drama series Safe House.

Emmerdale airs an unmissable episode on Friday evening (October 10) as Declan Macey exposes Charity's lies following his shock return to the village.

After tricking Charity's family into gathering at Holdgate alongside Jai Sharma, unstable Declan holds them all at gunpoint and reveals the full collection of Charity's recent misdeeds.

The dramatic episode will lead to the truth coming out about the Home Farm fire, the insurance scam and Rachel Breckle's departure with baby Archie - all building up to next week's big storyline as someone takes revenge against Charity by abducting her.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Jason Merrells, who plays Declan, for a chat about the must-see scenes and his decision to bow out from Emmerdale after four years.

Are you glad that Declan has this chance to get his final revenge against Charity?
"Yeah, I thought it was a great story and it wasn't over for Declan. It was left in quite an ambiguous way after the scenes on the lake and the audience have been wondering, hopefully in the best possible way, whether he would return. It's good that it has happened because the story needed one more beat.

"When we were filming the cottage week, I knew that Declan would come back again afterwards and I was very pleased when I read the scripts for these episodes."

How have you felt about featuring in such extreme scenes?
"Myself and Emma felt that we'd earned this story throughout the year, through developing that journey between Declan and Charity. It built up and built up, until the lies led to some very extreme behaviour on both their parts.

"It was well-earned and justified. I think that's probably why there hasn't been too many complaints about the violence of it - it was because the violence was earned by the story."

We know that Declan will expose Charity's lies to her family and Jai. What can you tell us about those scenes?
"Declan has had time to lie low. By the time he went to the lake, he would have laid a money trail for himself. He had a means of changing his identity and taking care of himself without the police finding him. Declan already had that in place, so he's had time to regroup and think about how he can get his final revenge.

"These episodes are about that and it's what Declan will do next. It's a question of whether his revenge will end this week, or whether it's something that can be served cold.

"The Dingles are all very shocked to see him! Most people thought he was dead! It's quite a shocking meeting and he's going to force Charity's family to listen to some home truths…"

Does Declan feel any guilt about his own actions?
"Yeah, I think he does feel guilt that he tried to kill Charity. I don't want to try to justify it, but from Declan's point of view it was a crime of passion. There'd been a strong chemistry between them and he's not a cold-hearted killer.

"Declan has gone a bit psycho and he has some issues, but I don't think he's like Cameron, for example. I think it's a different sort of thing with Declan - he's a volatile man on the edge. Now he's had time to regroup, he may be a bit cleverer about what his revenge could be…"

Do you think the viewers are on Declan's side or Charity's?
"I think it's veered between them, from what I can gather. That's great as it's what we wanted. I think the viewers love to hate Charity. They love her because she's so bad and she's so great at it. Charity is so remorseless a lot of the time, so she is a brilliant character to follow. Lots of people think she deserves some of what she got, but that's all part of being such a great character."

Next week, someone attacks Charity and holds her captive in a shipping container! Is Declan capable of turning back to the dark side by doing that?
"I think he's capable of anything! He's got nothing to lose now. Declan Macey as a functioning unit is no more. Whatever he goes on to do, if he goes on to do anything, will be in a new identity because his current one is gone and has been ruined. So when people have nothing to lose, they can do extreme things."

At the container, Charity sees her captor for the first time, how will she react to see who it is?

Have you seen much reaction from fans out on the street since the cottage week?
"Yeah, people have been looking at me quite strangely! (Laughs.) I think generally people enjoyed it. I don't usually watch myself as I find that quite hard, but even I enjoyed it when I watched it.

"I was doing another job at the time, but when I got back, I watched the episodes on catch-up. I thought the director Duncan Foster did such a good job with the tension and the pace of the episodes. When watching it, I forgot that it was me and I enjoyed it."

We know that you've now left Emmerdale, so were you sad to go?
"Yeah, in many ways. It was a really great job and I made a lot of friends there. The place is full of really good actors that I've really enjoyed working with. It was the right time for me to leave for lots of different reasons, so I'm excited about new beginnings, but I definitely loved working there and I will be sad to see it all gone."

Did you always have a timeframe in mind for how long you wanted to say?
"Yeah, but it ended up being a lot longer than what I thought! (Laughs.) Initially I thought I'd stay for two years, so it ended up being twice that. It was a great job and I was enjoying it, so I wanted to stick around for longer."

Do you think John Bowe is a good choice to take over Home Farm in his role as Lawrence?
"Yeah, he's a very good actor. Declan was always 'new money' as I always saw him as a city boy, whereas I think this new family have a bit more pedigree, which is a good contrast. I understand that John will be joining with a family behind him, so I'm sure that will be really good."

    Home Farm's new family

It's been announced this week that you're working on the new ITV drama Safe House. How's it all going?
"We've just been doing rehearsals and read-throughs so far, but it's going really well. It's got a fantastic script. It's really dark and really different - well, I've just done really dark, but this is dark in a different way! There's a really good cast and a really great team to work with. I'm very excited about it."

Did you expect to find new work so quickly after Emmerdale?
"It's always a risk! You put your feelers out, you hustle, you interview and you audition. I've been very lucky and it's very nice to go into something like this. Before this, I've also been doing an episode of Death in Paradise, so this is my second job since Emmerdale."

How would you like the fans to look back on Declan?
"Sympathetically! I always thought he was quite funny, but that's not the general picture of him. Hopefully they can remember some of the good times!"

All this talk of revenge gives a bad message out to me. Declan's behaviour is evil and unbalanced!

There must be something about Declan and Megan's history that us fans haven't seen yet. Someone said on another post that Declan was Robbie's dad! Nobody has ever been good enough for Declan in Megan's eyes. Declan hitting Megan then stopping? Megan just accepting?

None of this was ever explained and I just hope we learn a bit more about this so it would make more sense.
