Lucas is desperate to find Steph and Patrick before it's too late.

Neighbours star Carla Bonner has explained that her character Steph Scully is having a psychotic episode when she kidnaps baby Patrick.

As confirmed earlier this month, Steph snatches Lucas Fitzgerald and Vanessa Villante's young son while the Ramsay Street residents are all distracted by watching an eclipse.

Steph has been suffering from mental health problems and has stopped taking her medication when the incident takes place. Losing her grip on reality, she starts to believe that Patrick is Adam, the son she gave up.

Bonner told TV Week: "The longer Steph goes without medication, the more she starts to freefall. She's totally convinced herself the baby is Adam. She thinks she's rescued him and they can go and get her other son Charlie, and everything will be fine."

On the challenges of portraying the storyline, the actress continued: "Being a mother myself, it was tough to imagine ever touching anyone else's children. However, in Steph's mind, she is trying to protect a child who she believes is her own, and that's something I can relate to.

"I know I would kill for my family. I'm like a lioness, and if anyone touched my cubs, I would react."

Following an agonising search for Steph and Patrick which involves the police and most of the street, Lucas (Scott Major) tracks his ex-girlfriend down to the Men's Shed and sees how desperate she is to win him back.

Bonner said: "She falls into a psychotic state when she's in the Men's Shed, and Lucas is in danger. She believes Lucas wants a family, so now that she has a baby, everything will be fine. But when Lucas confronts her, she gets violent."

Neighbours airs these scenes next week on Eleven in Australia, and in June on Channel 5 in the UK.
