Love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe
Emmerdale's Bhasker Patel has called the dramatic twist involving Rishi Sharma claiming to be the father of son Jai's love child "a brilliant find".
Last night, viewers saw Rishi step in to help Jai after Charity (Emma Atkins) discovered the paternity of Rachel's (Gemma Oaten) baby Archie.
Patel, who plays the father of Jai (Chris Bisson) and Nikhil (Rik Makarem) in the Yorkshire-based soap, told PA that he was thrilled when reading the script.
He said: "When I read it I went 'OMG!'. When you read a script and do that, it's a brilliant find.
"I just wanted to read on and on and on - that's a good sign for anyone. It's the reaction you want to have as an actor."
Speaking of Rishi's fake admission, Patel said: "On the spur of the moment he thought, 'I'm going to step in'. It's one of those things that when you've said it you've said it and you can't retract it."
Despite being excited about the dramatic storyline, which was kept under wraps in the preceding weeks, Patel admitted that he was nervous about filming the scenes.
He explained: "We did the scene leading up to it, so it was building up and it was quite nerve-racking.
"After reading the script I was looking forward to filming it, but I think when it came to it, it felt a little bit like you were in the dock. I think it's good for an actor to have that and feel those nerves. And when I was admitting that I was the father it was quite weird actually.
"I am looking forward to how the viewers will react. I hope it was a real dark horse, strange moment for them."
Viewers can see whether or not Charity believes Rishi's claims in the next episode of Emmerdale on Monday, April 29 at 7pm on ITV.
