I'd prefer Mary and Matthew leaving together happy than him leaving on his own or dying

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has addressed Dan Stevens's rumoured exit from the series.

Stevens - who plays Matthew Crawley on the hit period drama - will reportedly depart Downton in 2013 following the fourth series premiere.

"Sometimes actors feel they want to move on," Fellowes told Entertainment Weekly. "Initially, for the first two or three [seasons] you can contract them, but after that, every season, you have to re-contract them.

He added: "If they don't want to come back, there's nothing we can do."

However, Fellowes insisted that he will not recast the role of Matthew should Stevens ultimately opt to quit Downton.

"I can't see us doing that," said the Oscar-winning writer.

Fellowes also claimed that the recently-confirmed fourth series of Downton Abbey will likely pick up soon after the events of series three's finale.

"I think we'll go on jogging quite happily through the '20s," he revealed. "You know there's always a little time jump. We did two years between [seasons] one and two because we only wanted to spend two years in the war so we had to start halfway through the war. Now we don't have those imperatives."

Downton Abbey will return to ITV1 this Christmas for a festive special, with the full fourth series following next year. In the US, the third run will debut on PBS on January 6.

Downton Abbey exec Gareth Neame has refused to confirm rumours of Dan Stevens's exit.

Rumours that the actor would be leaving the hit ITV period drama first began to circulate last month, with TVLine later claiming that "multiple sources" had confirmed Stevens's departure.

"There's been so much speculation about this cast," Neame told The Hollywood Reporter. "The thing with the show is, because we don't make a long run - we shoot about 11 hours of TV a year - our actors have the opportunity to go and do other work."

The executive producer refused to give a definitive answer on whether Stevens would reprise his role of Matthew Crawley full-time.

"As to which cast is coming or going, we don't comment on speculation," he said "But 95% of what I read in the papers is completely inaccurate, so that should be taken with a pinch of salt."

Downton Abbey will return to ITV1 this Christmas with a festive special. A full fourth series will then follow in autumn 2013. In the US, the third series of Downton Abbey will debut on PBS on January 6.

I second that. I was at my sisters for Christmas dinner and she was watching it while we all played a game of Trivial Pursuits with shots. I kept sneaking glances and caught the last 20 mins. I wish I hadn't as my potty mouth got the better of me when I realised how it's going to end. I'm going to watch it tomorrow. I've said it before that Julian Felllows is a despicable man.
