Coronation Street airs explosive scenes later this month as the truth about Carla and Peter's affair is revealed on the first day of Frank's rape trial.

As the court case begins, Carla (Alison King) is feeling brave as she's determined that justice will be done - but she gets emotional as she enters the witness box and recalls the night that Frank (Andrew Lancel) attacked her.

Later, events take a dramatic twist as Peter (Chris Gascoyne) takes his turn in the box and is questioned about his relationship with Carla. Frank's barrister accuses the pair of having an affair which is still going on, but Peter denies everything.

Taking her cue to prove that Peter and Carla are liars, Anne gets out photos showing the love cheats kissing - which were taken by Frank's private investigator.

As Anne passes the damning pictures to a devastated Leanne (Jane Danson) in the gallery, will Frank get the reaction he's hoping for? And will Carla's credibility be destroyed in front of the jury?

Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel has revealed that his character Frank Foster will act vulnerable during his rape trial.

The actor described Frank, who is trying to get away with attacking Carla Connor (Alison King), as one of Weatherfield's most evil villains.

"During the trial you will see him really twist the knife. He appears vulnerable in the stand and even gets a bit teary," Lancel told the Daily Star Sunday.

"But, as everyone knows, there is something deep inside him that one day needs to be sorted out - and, trust me, it will be. Everyone knows he raped Carla and he shouldn't get off. As an actor you have to justify him but he's a monstrous character."

He added: "I look like him and sound like him but I tend to learn my lines at work as I don't ever want to bring him home with me. You've got to be able to shake him off at the end of the day because he really is one of the nastiest characters to ever walk down Coronation Street."

Frank's Coronation Street trial begins on January 30.

Monday

As Frank's trial begins, Carla is unnerved by his composure. However, bolstered by Peter's presence, she's determined that justice will be done. In the witness box, Carla's emotional as she tells the court how Frank raped her. When she's then questioned by Frank's defence lawyer about her relationship with Peter, Carla is uncomfortable but insists they're just friends.

With Anne and Sally waiting for the bombshell of Carla and Peter's affair to be revealed, will Frank's barrister use Trish's photographic evidence to expose them?

Meanwhile, when Milton insists on visiting Roy's famous restaurant, Sylvia panics and lies that he runs the Bistro. Milton's impressed by the Bistro, but when it becomes clear that Roy isn't the owner, will Sylvia be forced to confess he owns only a humble café?

Elsewhere, with Steve and Tracy now living together at Number 13, Tracy's determined to prove to Steve that they can work things out, while Jason fumes as Paul appears for breakfast again - but Julie makes it clear to her sister that she'll be there for her when it all goes pear-shaped!

Frank's trial continues with Maria in the witness stand. She gives a compelling account of the night Frank pounced on her, but when cross-examined, she faces a tough time.

Next up in the box it's Peter, who's questioned closely about his relationship with Carla. Frank's barrister accuses them of having an affair and suggests it's still going on. Peter hotly denies the allegation, but taking her cue, Anne gets out the photo of Peter and Carla kissing and passes it to Leanne in the gallery. Will Frank get the reaction he's hoping for?

Meanwhile, Tracy is devastated as Steve tells her that he never loved her and is still in love with Becky. But when Deirdre advises Steve that no matter what Tracy's done he should be thinking of Amy, he comes to a decision.

Elsewhere, Milton spots an opportunity for expansion at Roy's café, Brian has a difficult meeting with the chair of the school governors, while Paul talks to Jason man-to-man.


Thursday

Anne, Sally and Frank head off for a celebratory drink, convinced that the jury will take Frank's side now they've exposed Carla and Peter's lies.

Meanwhile, a devastated Leanne pours her heart out to Stella. As she reveals that it was a drunken Carla who ran her over - not Frank - Stella's shocked.

Later, Peter finally tracks Leanne down and tells her sorry he is for everything. Leanne's in bits as it dawns on her how many times Peter has lied to her about meeting his alcohol counsellor when really he was with Carla. But as she calms down, Leanne starts to wonder if they can salvage their marriage. Pointing out how Peter forgave her for her affair with Nick, she suggests in time perhaps she can forgive him in return.

Peter insists that he does love Leanne, but he's in love with Carla and what they have is different. However, with the future of his family at stake and a devastated Simon to think of, will Peter accept Leanne's forgiveness or is this the end of the line?

Friday

As Peter comes to terms with his life-changing decision, Carla heads back to court to endure the rest of Frank's trial. She's buoyed when Peter arrives, but has he got the news for her that she so badly desires?

Later, as Frank gives his evidence, he lies through his teeth - painting himself as the victim. The judge ends his summing up by reminding the jury that they can only convict if they are sure of Carla's evidence. As they await the verdict, Carla's anxious. Emotions run high when the verdict is finally delivered.

Meanwhile, when Steve gives Tracy some cash to go shopping, she thinks he's thawing. However, with Tracy out of the way, he ushers Owen into Number 13 to carry out his work. Arriving home, Tracy is horrified to see that Steve has had the house converted into two self-contained flats. Steve's delighted as he puts his cunning plan into action.

Elsewhere, Jason sneaks Rosie into the work's van to drive her to an urgent work meeting, a worried Brian tells Julie that he's got three months to improve school results or he's out on his ear, while Milton suggests turning Roy's Rolls into a railway themed restaurant and opening a chain across the globe.

As the courtroom reacts to the verdict, Carla just wants to get away. Back on the street, Stella's still troubled by the revelation that it was Carla who ran her over, not Frank. Confronting Carla about how much she's hurt Leanne, Stella reveals that she also knows she lied about the crash and no longer believes her about the rape. Carla is left shaken.

Meanwhile, Tracy is furious about her new living arrangements and complains about the lack of kitchen upstairs. Steve promises her a microwave, but a furious Tracy threatens to report him to the council as he never obtained planning permission to turn Number 13 into flats. Will Steve back down?

Elsewhere, as Rosie and Jason kiss passionately in the van, the hand brake slips, the vehicle rolls forward and smashes into the car in front. Jason lies to Owen about the dented van, blaming another driver. But when Rosie gleefully tells him that the Gazette is going to run an article about their crash, calling her a 'randy road safety model', Jason panics.

Also, Milton mistakenly thinks the reason Roy isn't keen on his business idea is lack of funds, while Brian plans to introduce his new healthy eating initiative throughout the school.

EVIL knicker factory boss Frank Foster holds his face in his hands as a jury holds his fate in theirs.

By the end of the week Corrie fans will find out if rapist Frank has hoodwinked the jury into acquitting him.

But ITV bosses are giving nothing away about the soaps trial of the decade.

They have filmed two endings and, as our pictures below show, vile Frank looks restrained about both verdicts.

At the hearing, prosecutors will tell us what we already know that Frank, played by Andrew Lancel, raped Carla Connor at her flat when she broke off their engagement.

This week viewers will see him mock his victim outside court before taking the stand to defend himself.

But, as The People revealed last week, the slimy businessmans defence team has another trick up its sleeve.

A private detective has taken pictures of Carla (Alison King) snogging married man Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne).

And when ashen-faced Peter is quizzed on the stand he has no choice but to own up to their sleazy affair.

The grainy photographs are then passed to his horrified wife Leanne (Jane Danson) in the courts public gallery. Alcoholic Peter later tries to explain himself to Leanne but will she forgive him?

As Frank faces judgment day The People took statements from him and the three main witnesses in the drama.


DEFENDANT'S STATEMENT

How have the public responded to you?

I think the negative reaction is a myth. I have played one of the biggest t**ts to walk down Coronation Street. He is a dormant predator who has something monstrous inside him that he needs to sort out. But Ive had nothing more than a bit of banter at the football. Perhaps because its a storyline you cant make fun of.

Were you worried about a huge backlash?

I did talk to my wife about the plot before we filmed it and I was worried things would get a bit close to home.

But the worst thing Ive had to deal with is someone sending me a CV they wanted to be Franks PA. I think people forget sometimes that he is a monster. Others think he is misunderstood but they're wrong. Hes a rapist. Keep watching.

How do you cope with playing such a twisted character?

I count myself as dead lucky to be playing Frank because Ive been involved in taking characters to places they haven't been before.

He has had storylines with characters such as Carla and Sally (played by Sally Dynevor) iconic figures who couldn't be more different.

So far there hasn't been a day I haven't enjoyed. But there have been times when I've needed to go home and be alone.

Charlie Condou (who plays nurse Marcus Dent) is a good mate and while I was filming the rape scenes I stayed at his flat. He wasn't there, so I could just cocoon myself away. Frank can be quite hard to get rid of sometimes. Now I always try to learn my lines at work after everyone else has left because you don't want to go home with Frank.

I shake him off by going home, switching off and watching Emmerdale I'm not him, I just look like him.

How do you feel about leaving Coronation Street this year?

Ive always known my A and Z with Corrie and that it would come to an end, even if Ive been around longer than I expected.

I've seen what happens with Franks exit and I'm very happy. Its very clever and there are lots of twists. There is far more to talk about before Frank leaves including
another romance.

What is the attraction between Peter and Carla?

They depend on each other, whether or not they're drinking.

And their understanding of each other is perhaps on a different level to that of Peter and Leanne's. He tries to support Carla as best as he can over the rape.

Were you surprised the affair is revealed in court?

Yes, I didn't expect it but its the best place it could have happened as Peter cant turn around and lie.

We've been building up to the revelation of the affair for so long but the timing is unexpected.

Will Leanne be able to forgive Peter?

There's an awful lot of talking to be done. They have a dark night of the soul where everything comes out in the open and Peter is left with a huge decision to make in the end. Its not what you might predict there's an unexpected twist in those scenes.

How will the expose affect Peter and Carla if they stay together?

It will be interesting to see what happens if they move into that domestic area.

They don't have to hide their relationship any longer after the trial but things will be very different because the whole of the Street is against them.

And, on top of that, Carla has just been raped by Frank and had to defend herself in court. It has been an awful month for her.

How do you think Peter will react if Frank is found not guilty?

I reckon he'd want to kill him. And you'd never know with Peter.

He might have a moment of madness especially if hes been at the bottle again.

How have viewers reacted to Carla and Peters affair?

Very well, they call us Team Carter (from Carla and Peter). People want them together and heading to AA with each other.

Will they stay together?

Its swings and roundabouts. They are awful together but even worse apart but two minuses don't necessarily make a plus.

How does Carla feel about Leanne?

She is sad about hurting Leanne, she loves her but Carla is ruthless and cant fight her feelings for Peter any longer.

Will she be good at looking after Peters son, Simon?

Carla can have fun with kids but shes not good at dealing with it when they hate her. In the coming weeks Simon tells a terrible lie but she handles it really well.

Are you quite protective of Carla?

Yes, but Im not the only one. I've had a brilliant reaction from viewers after the rape storyline. The support has been amazing.

It was a really emotional subject to deal with. Bernie, a lady from a rape centre, told me everything I needed to know and was at filming. We didnt want to sensationalise it just make it as honest as possible.

How did it feel being shortlisted for Best Serial Drama Performance at the National Television Awards?

I was thrilled. I've never been nominated for a serious award before.

Will Leanne ever be able to forgive Peter and Carla?

Some people may think she should but I don't think she can, even though she cheated on Peter with Nick.

But it may not matter as Peter also has to make a choice between her and Carla. The affair has hurt Leanne incredibly and for it to be exposed so publicly is awful.

There are lots of different twists to come in the next few weeks.

How was filming the court scenes?

It was great for Leanne to find out the truth. It is always good to be involved in a storyline where the viewer knows something that your character doesnt.

The court we filmed in was very imposing and gave the scenes a great sense of drama, we all thoroughly enjoyed the trial.

Whats been the public response to Leanne over the affair?

Its been great, most are lovely and say they are enjoying the plot. Some say: Do you know what Peter is up to? and like to tell you but it is always good natured.

People seem to be split about whether Peter should be with Carla or stay with Leanne.

Where would you like to see Leanne go from here?

She has had a dramatic couple of years but I'm not complaining.

The writers have come up with some amazing stuff and I trust them completely.

It will be interesting to see what she does and how she copes with the situation with Simon. She is a survivor though so whatever happens shell get through it.
