EastEnders star Jake Wood has expressed excitement over future developments in the soap's Max and Tanya affair storyline, promising that there is a big surprise in store for fans.

Viewers have recently seen Max and Tanya's old spark return as they have finally given into temptation, while their respective partners Vanessa and Greg remain clueless.

EastEnders' executive producer Bryan Kirkwood recently teased that there will be "a huge, life-changing shock for Tanya" (Jo Joyner) as the plot progresses over the coming weeks.

Speaking of the story's future for the first time, Wood told All About Soap: "There's a big twist and the reveal of the affair and the fallout from that will just be the start of another chapter.

"The storyline with Max and Tanya cheating on their partners with each other builds to a point, and then it goes somewhere else entirely. It's going to be very exciting."

Wood also promised that fans can expect a change in direction for Vanessa when she finds out that Max has betrayed her.

"There are some big things ahead for Vanessa," he said. "She's not a lady to be crossed. She's given up everything for Max and I think we're going to see a completely different side to her soon. It's going to be great."

Zöe Lucker, who plays Vanessa, will be bowing out from EastEnders in the autumn.
