Mel Gibson's 28-year marriage appears to be over - his wife, Robyn, has filed for divorce.

The legal documents, obtained by TMZ.com, were filed in Los Angeles on Monday. The actor's wife has cited "irreconcilable differences" for the split.

The Gibsons wed in 1980 and have seven children.

In the legal papers, Robyn is seeking joint physical and legal custody of the couple's youngest son, Tom - their only minor child. She is also asking for spousal support and attorneys fees.

The couple reportedly has no pre-nuptial agreement.

Mel Gibson's wife of 28 years has filed for divorce, setting the stage for one of the most expensive marriage break-ups in legal history.
Under Californian law, Robyn Gibson could take half of her husband's £640million fortune.
She lodged papers in Los Angeles Superior Court weeks after Gibson was pictured frolicking on a beach in Costa Rica with an unidentified brunette.

The Oscar-winning actor is said to have become close to a Russian brunette on the set of his most recent film, but denies he has had an affair with the woman, a musician known simply as Oksana.
The court papers filed by 52-year-old Mrs Gibson cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the split.
It was reported last night that she and her husband, 53, have been living apart for almost three years.

The couple have seven children, six of whom are grown up. Mrs Gibson is seeking joint custody of the youngest, Tom, who is ten this week.
    Rumours: Gibson's Russian companion Oksana
The former nurse and Gibson are not understood to have a prenuptial agreement.
Despite the irreconcilable differences cited by Mrs Gibson, many in Hollywood believe the real reason behind the split is her husband's close relationship with Oksana.
She is one of the artists on the Australian-born actor's recording label Icon and has been in the U.S. recording an album.
Gibson denies that she is anything more than a colleague, but the pair have been snapped coming out of his trailer on the set of The Edge of Darkness, which is due for release this year.

Gibson, a staunch Roman Catholic, was one of the highest-paid and most popular actors in the world in the 1990s, winning best director and best picture Oscars for his 1995 film Braveheart.
He has adopted a lower public profile since his controversial 2004 hit movie The Passion of the Christ and his 2006 arrest for drink-driving in Malibu, when he launched into an alcohol-fuelled tirade against Jews.
Not long before his arrest he was photographed partying with female admirers.
'The incident definitely took a toll on his marriage,' an acquaintance of the actor told the Daily Mail last night.
'Robyn was humiliated by the fallout from that incident, as was his entire family. Mel never thought there was anything inappropriate about his relationships with other women.
'In his mind, it was perfectly natural to have female friends - even if they were beautiful and often far younger than him. It was something his wife needed to deal with as far as he was concerned.'

Mrs Gibson is being represented in the divorce by the lawyer Laura Wasser, whose previous clients include Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie and Keifer Sutherland.
An almighty fight is now on the cards over what is perhaps the largest fortune of any Hollywood actor.

Gibson was ranked No 1 on the Forbes celebrity rich list in 2004 and has his own film production company.

A £25million investment in The Passion of the Christ earned him £140million in 2004 and £125million the following year.
He can command £17million a film and is an avid real estate investor, with properties in Malibu, Australia, Fiji and Costa Rica.
In December 2004 he sold a 300acre ranch in Australia for a reported £4million and then bought an island in Fiji called Mago for an estimated £10million.

In 2005 he sold a ranch in Montana for an undisclosed sum and bought one in Costa Rica two years later for £18million.
He sold his Tudor estate in Connecticut for £27million that same year and in 2007 is also said to have made a £4million profit by selling a Malibu property for £20million after owning it for only two years.
Gibson also owns a £28million church in California.

With a congregation of fewer than 100, the Holy Family Catholic Church in Malibu is listed as being tax-exempt. Its assets include art works worth £336,000.

I am really shocked at this too.. he seemed to keep her out of the limelight which is why I suspected their marriage lasted this long.. and he has 6 kids too.

Jade Goody's widower Jack Tweed has been sentenced to 12 weeks in jail for an assault on a taxi driver.

The court heard that the normal sentence would have been 18 weeks, but it had been reduced due to "recent events".

Tweed, 21, is to serve half the sentence and has been ordered to pay £200 compensation to the taxi driver and costs of £455.

Reporting from Harlow Magistrates Court, Sky's Alistair Bunkall said Tweed's legal team had put forward mitigation arguments prior to sentencing.

"They said that to say he was a changed man would be an understatement - he has been rehabilitated," he said.

Bunkall added that lawyers had argued that Tweed showed dignity and maturity over the death of his wife Jade Goody, which left him a widower at the age of 21.

He said the court had also heard character statements from a doctor and a nurse who helped treat Jade, as well as from a taxi driver.

Tweed was found guilty of attacking Stephen Wilkins in Epping, Essex, last May following a trial at Epping Magistrates Court last month.

Magistrates warned him at the time he could be jailed for the offence, which he denied.

The conviction was the second time in six months that Tweed, of Buckhurst Hill, Essex, has been found guilty of assault.

In September, he was given an 18-month jail sentence by a judge at Chelmsford Crown Court after being found guilty of hitting a 16-year-old boy with a golf club. Tweed denied the assault.

He was released from prison on licence in January, but wore a monitoring tag and was made to observe a curfew.

Tweed married mother-of-two Goody in February at a ceremony in Hatfield Heath, Essex.

The 27-year-old former Big Brother contestant died barely two months later following a well-publicised battle with cancer.

She was buried on Saturday, April 4.

So the slime ball is going to be out in about 6 weeks. No wonder that there is so much violent crime these days with these lenient sentences

Yeah and then we will have to suffer for the next six months while he sells his story of how he spent each day he was in prison.

Yeah, and the fact he has to be put on suicide watch because he can't go to her grave every day which will make him have a nervous breakdown. Or is it that he can't play a round of golf for a few weeks

I cant beleive that Mel Gibson's wife can claim half of his earnings. That is so not fair. He earned it. OK maybe she should get something if she brought the kids up whilst he worked but certainly not half when it is him that did all the work.

If she really married him to be with him and not for his money then maybe she should not try to get half.
I figured out why I'm so fat!!! The shampoo I use in the shower that runs down my body says "for extra volume and body" on the bottle. I'm going to start using dishwasher liquid, cos it says "removes fat that is otherwise difficult to remove" on the bottle!
