The parents of Madeleine McCann are "entirely innocent" and the focus of her disappearance must return to the hunt to find her, a family spokesman has declared.

Clarence Mitchell, who quit his civil service job to help Gerry and Kate McCann, said "rampant" speculation about possible charges against the couple had to end.

Both parents have been questioned by Portuguese police over the girl's alleged death, sparking "intense media attention".
But Mr Mitchell said: "The focus must now return to Madeleine and move away from the rampant, unfounded and inaccurate speculation.
"The focus must be the child ... the task is simply to find her and understand why she disappeared."






I like the "entirely innocent".. they are 100% guilty of leaving 3 kids under the age of 4 alone while they enjoy a meal with friends so I don't believe in this "entirely innocent" crap!!!

I heard they've made the friends that went with them on holiday, official suspects aswell now.

This is getting absurd, these police clealry haven't got a clue what they're doing, its totally unprofessional and frankly disgusting.

Why??? in any missing case, everyone involved with the kids are immediately suspects. I am just surprised they were never made suspect from the very start, it is routine to do so and happens in every case.
Nobody seem to think it was disgusting when Robert Murat was made suspect. Why is everyone so disgusted that Maddy's parents are suspects.. I am not!!

To be honest the whole investigation has been a shambles from day one. and now there are so many things written on the papers you just don't know what to believe anymore. since the begining of the investigation there are so many things that the portugese police have done wrong, i mean it took them hours to man the border, like you say siobhan they didn't look at the parents straight away which is what usually happens and its been a comedy of errors one after the other.

Police investigating an alleged sighting last week of Madeleine McCann in southern France have determined it was not the missing British girl, a police official said today.

Investigators had taken seriously a Dutch teenage tourist's account that she believed she had seen McCann alive at a French roadside restaurant near the city of Montpellier on February 15, a police official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.

After viewing closed-circuit video footage, police investigators spotted a man and a young girl who indeed resembled the British girl, but determined it was not McCann after a thorough inspection, the official said.

The file has been transferred to a state prosecutor in Montpellier, the official said, declining to provide further information.

Dutch newspaper De Gelderlander today interviewed Melissa Firing, 18, who said she was sure the girl she saw was McCann because of the way she reacted when she called out her name, and because she was able to look her in the eyes.

An adult man accompanying the child took her and left the restaurant quickly afterward, Firing told the newspaper.

McCann has been missing since May 3, 2007 when she disappeared during a family vacation in Praia da Luz in Portugal's Algarve region.

There have been numerous alleged sightings, but none has turned up the girl.

When I read this in the paper I really had hope. I thougt it had to be her. I know they have said it's false, but what investigations do you think they've done? Have they actually found the girl claimed to be Maddie? If anyone knows.. or just looked at the CCTV?

This happened last friday and only reported in the papers on Wednesday this week.. it is not her. They examined all the CCTV footage and so have the mcCanns... false alarm again

Thinking back I cant believe how long its been, it really is a sad and terrible thing, I keep thinking at college ahhhh not long till may. It wont be long since its been a year
