Big Brother launch watched by 7m

The launch of Channel 4's Celebrity Big Brother series proved a hit, attracting 7.1 million viewers.
The early figures were the second best for any of the five series launches, with viewing peaking at eight million and a 32% audience share.

The second episode of BBC duet talent show Just the Two of Us saw its viewers fall from 5.4 to 3.9 million.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes has former S Club singer Jo O'Meara and singer Leo Sayer as joint favourites to win Big Brother.

Former A-Team member Dirk Benedict, who predicted the experience would be a "nightmare", is joint third favourite.

Channel 4 also launched the third series of Desperate Housewives on Wednesday, screening two episodes back-to-back.

    OPENING ODDS

    Jo O'Meara 5/1
    Leo Sayer 5/1
    Dirk Benedict 6/1
    Ian "H" Watkins 6/1
    Cleo Rocos 8/1
    Ken Russell 12/1
    Shilpa Shetty 12/1
    Donny Tourette 16/1
    Danielle Lloyd 20/1
    Jermaine Jackson 20/1
    Carol Malone 25/1
    Source: Ladbrokes

The first instalment was watched by 3.6 million, which fell to 2.8 million for the second episode at 2230 GMT.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: "We are delighted that both shows, scheduled together as a post-holiday treat for Channel 4 viewers, were so warmly welcomed by TV audiences to give us a fantastic start to 2007."

Film director Ken Russell made a spectacular entrance to Celebrity Big Brother, dressed in a garish waistcoat and bellowing out a rendition of Singing in the Rain.

The 79-year-old, who said he was a "huge fan" of the show, needed assistance to walk down the steps into the house.

Benedict, who also starred in Battlestar Galactica, made a dramatic entrance, arriving in a replica A-Team van, smoking a large cigar to cheers from the crowds.

Donny Tourette, of punk band The Towers of London, exchanged insults with the crowd, while model Danielle Lloyd was met with boos.

Other contestants include Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, ex-Steps star Ian "H" Watkins, Kenny Everett Show actress Cleo Rocos and newspaper columnist Carole Malone.
George Galloway attracted criticism for his exploits last year

    History of celebrity version

Some of the press have already labelled the line-up "nobodies" and "wrinklies".

Votes from viewers will decide which stars are ejected during the series, which is expected to last a month.

Each celebrity will nominate a charity and the money raised during the voting process will be split equally between the organisations.

In last year's show, eventual winner Chantelle Houghton had been "planted" as a non-celebrity but proved the most popular contestant.

    Day 2, 14:14
It's only Day Two, but the air is already thick with the stench of conspiracy.
Or at least, it is around Ian.

Last night during a midnight chat, Ian made noises that something was probably afoot in Big Brother land.

Something mysterious, something not very nice.

Really, Ian? What could you mean?

And earlier today in the bedroom, while Danielle was unpacking, Ian wondered on the bed: "There has to be a secret room here somewhere."

    "Really?" replied Danielle.

    "I'm sure there's a twist," he said.

After lunch, suspicion had spread to Jo.

"Everyone's cool. It's too easy. I don't trust it," she said.

"They have to put a cat among the pigeons," agreed Ian.

"They'll bring in a bitch or something," Jo continued. "I think they'll give us three or four days to bond. And then ******* it all up."

Jo, would Big Brother do such a thing?

"Yeah, it is too easy," added Donny. "What's gonna be the shake up? They're plotting something."

    Our lips are sealed, Donny.

You wouldn't think a four-letter name could cause such mayhem.
Shilpa and Jo were two starlets divided by a common language this afternoon, as the pair tried to establish the correct way to pronounce Dirk's name.

We suggest 'Dirk' to rhyme with 'work', but hey...

"What are they laughing at?" Jo asked Shilpa as they listened to Dirk and Carol in the kitchen.

"They're saying I pronounce Dirk's name as duck," giggled Shilpa. "Dirk? Duck? Deuck?" she said.

    "Dirk?" repeated Jo.

"Duck?" said Shilpa as the two fell about.

"It sounds like you call him Duck," laughed Jo.

"Duck Benedict. It sounds like a dish," chuckled Shilpa. "I don't call him Duck, I call him Deuck."

    "Duck?" repeated Jo again.

"Jermaine," called Shilpa, corralling the Jackson into the fray. "How do you say 'Dirk'?"

    "Dirk," he replied.

"See, he says it the same way."

    "You say Duck?" asked Jo.

"Dirk? Duck?" repeated Jermaine sounding out the options, before drawling: "Oh, Dirrrrk."

Hearing his name, Dirk's ears pricked up and he looked at the women quizzically.

"We're doing name pronunciations. Dirk," explained Shilpa, before her and Jo repeated his name, one Mumbai, one Romford.

"I like yours better," chose Dirk. "I like accents."

"But how do you say it?" said Shilpa.

"It's got a hard R," confirmed Dirk. Wonder if he rolls his Rs too...

I watched the launch last night, and most of them i haven't even heard of! I'm not sure if i will get into Celeb Big Brother this year judging on first impressions. The only celebs i recognised going in was H from Steps and Jo who used to be in S Club 7. The other celebs haven't really heard of. Danielle seems like this year's "Jodie Marsh" so i don't particularly like her so far. Also that Donny guy who is in a band called "Towers of London" which i have never heard of, seems really cocky, arrogant and immature too so i'm not really liking him! The others i don't really mind and i will have to watch them more to get an opinion on them.

Ken Russel going in singing "Singing In The Rain" was really funny, i was laughing so much!

Jo is my favourite in there so far as i used to like S Club 7 and she was my favourite one in the band.
