Seven teases a Summer Bay wedding and more highlights to come for soap fans.

Seven last night unveiled a new Home & Away promo following the departure of Irene (Lynne McGranger).

"Welcome home to Summer Bay" teases what's still to come in 2025: romance, laughter, celebration, tears, high-speed chases, and heart-stopping tragedy that will rock the Bay forever. For some, it's the end of the line.

Summer Bay's wedding of the year is also just around the corner, as Cash (Nicholas Cartwright) and Eden (Stephanie Panozzo) prepare to say 'I do' in a beautiful and emotionally charged ceremony surrounded by their closest friends and family.

Meanwhile Seven's Director of Content, Scripted, Julie McGauran, said: "Viewers have given Irene the perfect send off from Home and Away, with her final farewell our highest rated episode this year, and thousands of fans sending in messages for Lynne as part of our 'Goodbye Irene' campaign.

"For 33 years, Lynne brought warmth, wit and wisdom to Summer Bay as Irene Roberts, and left a lasting mark on Australian pop culture with her iconic catchphrases and charm. We wish Lynne all the best for the future and thank her for the incredible impact she's had on our beloved show."

Lynne McGranger said: "After almost 33 years in my dream role and working every day with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it's bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life.

"I am forever grateful to the best production crew in the world and to our genius writers - whose doors are always open - for everything they have done for Irene over the past 33-odd years, and I am so proud of the storyline which will see Irene out of the Bay. Above all, a massive, heartfelt thank you to the fans for your continued love and support."

A record for the year in terms of viewers and an episode not worthy of Irene/Lynne?s legacy. It fell flat. Not enough moments between Irene and Alf/Marilyn, John (as great as Shane is) being a total child, and Justin given way too much screen time. I?m no Leah fan but Ada really knocked it out of the park and her scenes with Irene throughout the whole exit storyline were a true highlight.

Channel 7 and Home and Away bosses really had a chance of luring viewers back permanently with this storyline and they blew it. It was far too rushed with misplaced focus and I really hope someone else is brought in to steer the show (replacing Lucy Addario who is clearly lacking the inspiration), especially when it comes to Alf?s inevitable farewell.

I think that most soap operas stuff up an exit storyline, even if they have plenty of time, I think scriptwriters have an idea and then halfway through believe it needs to be jazzed up some more for dram purposes, in my humble opinion, never works for me... I am glad Irene was not killed off as she has always been one of my favourite characters and I hope that we will hear the odd comment from her close friends that she has been in touch...

Well, I thought it was a beautiful and emotional farewell episode for Irene. A stunning way to say goodbye to SB. And I agree with the host of positive comments from viewers, including that it was great that the whole episode was about her, the extended recap at the beginning, the speeches, the music, the farewells & especially the letters with Irene's voiceover - where I agree with people that have been mentioning that she seemed to be speaking not just to the characters, but also to the viewers as well. And then at the end when the car passes the "You are now leaving Summer Bay' sign, she appears to look straight at the camera, as if she is saying goodbye to the audience as well. I also felt that they have had plenty of flashbacks over recent days & that if they had tried to bring back some previous characters/returnees for her farewell, as some have suggested, that it would have taken away the attention on Irene herself (some have praised how 'low key her exit was - hopeful and sad').

The writers/producers can never please everyone, with some saying that the whole storyline was too fast, while others have been saying that they couldn't wait for it to finish as it had been going on for so long... I think it was best summed up in Irene's/Lynne's voiceover to her letters she left for her friends to read, where she explained that she had to go now/quickly because she wanted them to remember her as she is now, still full of life...

"I can't tell you how much our friendship means to me and how hard it is for me to say goodbye. But I am going now, so you'll remember me as I am now, still full of life and love and hope. I want you to remember that life moves so quickly. So, make every moment count. Every single moment. Don't waste a minute. Be brave, take risks, love hard and laugh loud. It is good for the soul........"

I also think that Lynne's decision to leave took them a bit by surprise. When she took time off to do the play "The GrandParents Club", I believe that she was expected to return, but when the play did so good & they decided to 'take it on the road', Lynne thought it was the perfect time to leave H&A & 'get back to her roots'. I assume this left them little time to come up with an extended farewell storyline, so to speak (a storyline about Dementia which we now know was Lynne's idea).

I thought John/Shane was great in showing his concern for how Irene was going to cope overseas & I believe he was entitled to show his grief at losing his closest & dearest mate - and came good for her in the end (& will meet up with her in Paris later on!).

The only negative for me was, as happens in a lot of these types of farewells, the amount of random background extras attending the party. Some have said that the appearance of new cop, David, at the party was also random. I thought it was great, as David has bought Irene's place, & it was sort of a 'passing the baton' type moment - & also given that Irene invited him "Why don't you come to my farewell and meet a few people". (It was also great to see some outdoor shots of Irene's place - hopefully there will be more!).

I agree with Perdita in that I hope we hear some of them say they have heard from Irene & how she is getting on...first step of her travels to see VJ.

Overall, I thought it was very well done and a good send off.

Sounds like the HAA bosses can do no wrong by you. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to blindly lap up what they deliver. They missed a really big opportunity to lure viewers back due to how underwhelming it was. I didn?t hate it btw, I just think she deserved better, like Sally or Don Fisher?s, both which remain memorable to this day, or what Jason Herbison did with the Neighbours finale, or even Harold?s in Neighbours. I?m actually glad many of the other cast weren?t at the party. They didn?t deserve to be there and would have made the moment less-than.

...and, again, it sounds like they can do little right by you. Please...'blindly lap up what they deliver'...I am just giving credit where credit is due, & it is my opinion that they did a great job (a job, which by the way, Lynne also loved, as it appears did the majority of people - which I gather to you means they all 'blindly lapped up what was delivered'). It is only your opinion, which I obviously disagree with, that it was 'underwhelming' and 'they missed a really big opportunity' etc etc etc, whilst the overwhelming fan opinion was that it was a great send-off (apart from a couple of news outlets, associated with rival tv networks, which focussed on a few adverse viewer comments).

I know our opinions will continue to differ, as I know you won't agree with what I have said here, which is fine...

For everyone else, a DS article:

Here's why Home and Away has hit an impressive 2025 ratings record
A sad one for fans of the Aussie soap.
