So all the troubles Chas suffered were down to John, not sure why he was doing it.

Munchausen Hero Homicide (MHH) is a condition where the sufferer attempts to harm others so that they can later come to the rescue and save that person from the dangerous situation they created... so they can be a hero! I imagine it is down to PTSD from his Army days..

He seems to have recovered quicker than Caleb, I would have though the opposite would be true, that one who received the kidney would take longer to heal.

I really do not think Joe is stupid enough to run the risk of Caleb finding out he took his kidney, that he would come back for Dawn. It never seemed to me that he loved Dawn, more that he was just exerting power over her, for his own amusement. He certainly does not seem like the fatherly type, or does he think that Dawn will leave the children with Billy.
