After 40 extraordinary years, Australia celebrates its longest-running and dearly loved soap, Neighbours
Happy 40th birthday!
https://www.nowtolove.com.au/enterta...r-anniversary/
It's a series woven into the fabric of Australia's identity, that has stolen the hearts of many across the world. But sadly, after 40 years, Neighbours has officially called it quits - again.
While it is incredibly bittersweet to farewell the iconic series, its 40th anniversary marks a huge milestone to be celebrated for the talent it has produced and the fans it has impacted.
TV WEEK speaks exclusively with Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne - who play Dr Karl and Susan Kennedy - about how the news has affected them.
"The first time the show was cancelled it was utter devastation," Jackie, 69, recalls of the series initially getting the axe in 2021, before its surprise renewal in 2023. "The second time we were a bit more prepared - but it's still very sad for all of us."
Married couple Susan and Karl moved to Ramsay Street, Erinsborough in 1994, with the actors having appeared on our screens for 30 years and sharing a wide range of memorable storylines together - from poetic to downright ridiculous.
"Susan having a relationship with a Catholic priest and defrocking him - I really had to dig deep for that one," Jackie jokes. "I thought that might've been a bridge too far, but I got through it."
"For me, it was Susan's amnesia," Alan, 67, adds. "Jackie was presented with an enormous challenge where she had to play Susan as not remembering anything after the age of 16 but having to deal with the fact that she is apparently married. It was a delicate, sensitive story.
"It gave us an opportunity as Karl and Susan to almost fall back in love with each other again, which culminated in Karl and Susan renewing their vows and Susan remembering her original wedding vows at that ceremony. It was a very poignant, beautiful story."
Executive producer and former series writer Jason Herbison, 54, wants to ensure those storylines are remembered in a unique way in the celebratory final year of Neighbours.
"While nostalgia is always part of our celebration, this time around we wanted to tip our hat to the storytelling themes of the past four decades," Jason tells TV WEEK. "The big classic twists and turns that the viewers love."
Neighbours is not just known for its creative story arcs, but also for producing some of the country's biggest stars, with Alan declaring the series the 'best classroom for television'.
"We've worked with Margot Robbie, Kylie [Minogue], Jesse Spencer," Alan lists. "These people who have gone on to the world stage. But you've also got your Peter O'Briens and Ben Lawsons, who are working in every country doing great work."
Cast member Hannah Monson, who joined the cast as Nicolette Stone in 2023, was simply grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the ride.
"You don't often get to say that you've worked on a show that's run for 40 years," the 32-year-old explains. "I just feel lucky I got to jump in on the tail end."
As for what the cast will do come July, when filming ceases, Jackie for one is looking forward to reading more books, while Alan will be straight off to the UK and Ireland touring as a musician, his other passion! Meanwhile, Hannah hopes to be floating in the idyllic blue waters of Greece on a well-deserved holiday.
They all also happily declare that they have no intention of doing any 'reality gigs' any time soon.
"If they had a show called The Amazing Crawl, maybe," Alan teases, in reference to doing The Amazing Race.
"The Amazing Sit Down And Have A Cup Of Tea, I could do," Jackie jokes.
As for the iconic on-screen couple that have gone through many ups and downs, working together so closely for three decades has made them dear friends, not simply colleagues.
"This has been our happy place for a very, very long time," Alan says. "We've had each other to fall on for 30 years. We have a lot to do with each other's lives."
"We will miss the daily opportunities to insult each other," Jackie adds with a laugh.
Another thing they will deeply miss is the opportunity to connect with their fans around the world.
"I had a beautiful letter from a young man who genuinely said to me that Neighbours saved his life," Alan says. "He was suffering so much from mental illness until he saw what the characters were going through and he got help. That's just one story, and it's one of many."
"You're working on something that is a very, very important element in a lot of people's lives", Jackie says. "That needs to be treated with respect and care. It's an honour to have been a part of that."

Neighbours filming wraps on Ramsay Street for the last time as star says ?farewell?
https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/04/neigh...o=newsnow-feed
It?s the end of an era ? Neighbours has filmed the last ever scenes on Ramsay Street today.
The fictional cul-de-sac has been at the centre of the drama for over 40 years, but today the cameras stopped rolling on the real life location that doubles as the famous homes.
Cast and crew gathered on Pin Oak Court in Vermont South, which is occupied by real residents who allow their houses to be used for exterior shots, for what is likely to be the final time.
This comes following Amazon Prime Video?s decision to pull the plug earlier this year, just two years on from announcing that they were reviving the Australian soap.
Executive producer Jason Herbison, who has overseen the show in both its formats over many years, still has hope that it can have a future.
In a statement he said: ?Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced Neighbours for four decades and we are very proud of the huge success over the last two years including often appearing as one of the top 10 titles in the UK and the show?s first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series in 2024.
?As this chapter closes, we appreciate and thank Amazon MGM Studios for all that they have done for Neighbours ? bringing this iconic and much-loved series to new audiences globally.?
Metro understands that the last ever scenes from the serial?s production base in Nunawading will be recorded on Friday, July 11 ? one week today.

On Instagram, show legend Annie Jones, who first appeared as Jane Harris in 1986, shared a photo of her in a car with Hannah Monson, who has played Nicolette Stone since the revival.
?On our way to Ramsay St for the LAST time,? she wrote.
Sara West, who joined as Cara Varga-Murphy in 2023, uploaded a similar picture with co-stars Naomi Rukavina and Riley Bryant, who play Cara?s wife Remi and their son JJ.
She cheekily edited Marley Williams, who plays their younger son Dex into the snap, writing: ?Last ride down to Ramsay St.?
Meanwhile, show icon Rebekah Elmaloglou was stood at the bottom of a gloomy Pin Oak Court, adding: ?Farewell Ramsay Street!? to her emotional shot.
The site has become somewhat of a tourist destination over the last four decades, with fans from around the world ? including myself ? making the pilgrimage.
Those who live in the court are bound by a contract that means they?re not allowed to do any cosmetic work to their properties without permission from producers. Now that cameras have stopped rolling, that could soon change.
Neighbours streams Monday to Thursday from 7am on Amazon Prime Video.

Neighbours cast speak out as filming reaches emotional end after 40 years
Almost time to say goodbye (again).
https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/nei...t-filming-end/
It's the end of the road (again) for Neighbours as the Aussie soap has officially wrapped filming on its final episodes.
The cast and crew have reflected on saying goodbye to Ramsay Street for the second, and final time, with the farewell made bittersweet by the double cancellation.
Producer Jason Herbison said Neighbours is "a special show" and teased plans to continue the series in the future.
"It's been a privilege to make the recent seasons for our loyal viewers around the world," he added.
"We have added 460 episodes to our legacy of over 9,000 episodes, something we all feel proud of. Once again, we will be resting the residents of Ramsay Street on a hopeful note, with some tantalising possibilities for a future chapter."
Actors have been getting emotional over filming their very last scenes as residents of Erinsborough, with legends Stefan Dennis and Alan Fletcher leading the ensemble in celebrating the series.
"I never thought a single show would give me the greatest adventures of my career, spanning 40 years," said Paul Robinson star Dennis.
"Without Neighbours I would not have meet the people, been to the places and lived the experiences of a lifetime. Thank you all."
Karl Kennedy actor Fletcher, the longest-serving actor on the show having played the role since 1994, said: "Neighbours has been my happy place for over 30 years. I will always treasure the creative freedom and enthusiasm amongst the whole team that has allowed us to produce a brilliant show for so long."
Fletcher's onscreen wife Jackie Woodburne, who plays Susan Kennedy, echoed his feelings.
"It's impossible to measure the gratitude I feel for the gift of 30 years on Neighbours.
"To do so I would have to calculate the number of extraordinary cast and crew I have been privileged to work with, count the number of laughs I have shared with them, measure the pride I feel for the diverse, dramatic (and sometimes outrageous!) storytelling we have all been a part of.
"We are the best version of 'family'. It has been a wild ride into a happy life. Wouldn't change it for quids!"
"Neighbours has been a part of my life for most of it, and I'm grateful that it has been," Jane Harris star Annie Jones said, while Rebekah Elmaloglou weighed in on the "craziness" of playing Terese Willis.
"Neighbours is a fine example of commitment. I've had to pinch myself every day. I've loved every minute of it," she said.
"The friendships, the laughter, the tears and the early mornings and the craziness of playing a character that never tires me..."
Aaron Brennan star Matt Wilson deemed the show "a real beacon of hope" for those who work in entertainment, while Majella Davies, who plays Krista Tanaka deemed the soap "an integral part of the industry".
Leo Tanaka star Tim Kano said the soap has become his "adult family', with the sentiment echoed by Nicolette Stone's Hannah Monson, who praised the "connection" and "growth" she experienced while being on the show.
"There's too many things to miss about this show, but what I'll miss most - more than getting to live out a childhood dream every day and more than even the catering - are the beautiful people I've met along the way," Max Ramsay star Ben Jackson added.
Sadie Rodwell star Emerald Chan credited the show for giving her some of her "best friends" while Byron Stone's Xavier Molyneux called Neighbours "life-changing".
"It's been such a pleasure to work on Australia's most iconic television show, with the most wonderful cast and crew," said Lloyd Will, who portrays Andrew Rodwell.
As for his onscreen wife Candice Leask, who plays Wendy, she opened up on going through five different auditions to get the role.
"It took me 10 years and five auditions to land the role of Wendy Rodwell," she said.
"The three years playing Wendy and being on Neighbours has changed my life, not only as an actor but also as a person. The people that I have gotten to know so closely from production to crew to cast have allowed me to see how amazing this industry can be."
Cara Varga-Murphy star Sara West called the show "a constant", while Remi Varga-Murphy star Naomi Rukavina acknowledged the iconic status the show has reached.
"It's a special thing to be part of a national icon," Rukavina said.
"Neighbours is nothing like I had imagined; it has been blessing on blessing for me. Fulfilling, stabilising, and heart-filling. Long live the Icon."
Neighbours' grand finale is set to air on 11 December in Australia and the UK.
Neighbours releases new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays for free on Amazon Freevee and Prime Video in the UK and US. In Australia, the show airs from Mondays to Thursdays at 4pm on Channel 10, with a 6.30pm repeat screening on 10 Peach Comedy.
