In Roy's Rolls:
Alex: Can you smell something burning?
Billy: No why, can you?
Alex: No. but it's always good to check.

Am I thick ? I didn't get that . What did it mean ?

It's the same as asking someone: "Did you lose a leg?"
"No, did you think I did?"
"No, but it's always good to check."
Or:
"Are you wearing your lucky trousers?"
"No, did you think I was?"
"No, but it's always good to check."

It's just the same sort of pointless question that makes it funny without labouring the point. If Alex had smelt something burning, he would have attended to it himself.
