Wesley Snipes has been sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion.
The action star was given the maximum sentence at the court in Ocala, Florida after prosecutors described him as a “truly notorious offender".
He was acquitted of fraud in February but convicted on three misdemeanour counts of willfully failing to file federal tax returns from 1999 to 2001.
Prosecutors said he had escaped paying more than $15 million in income tax to the IRS since 1999.
His lawyers read out character references from family members and friends, including actors Woody Harrelson and Denzel Washington. Snipes also surprised the court by handing over more than $5 million in cheques, which prosecutors branded a "grandstanding move".
His attorneys recommended that he be given probation, saying he was not a dangerous man and had led an otherwise "lawful life".
However, US District Judge William Terrell Hodges said it was important to create a deterrent against tax defiance, accusing Snipes of exhibiting a "history of contempt over a period of time" for US laws.
Snipes told the judge: "I am very sorry for my mistakes and errors. This will never happen again."
He was told that he would be contacted at a later date and informed when his sentence would begin.
Emma Chawner has made it through three rounds of X Factor auditions after being booted out in the last series.
Judge Simon Cowell blasted the teenager for her performance of Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On' last year, saying she sang "like a baby" and mocking the dress made by her dad Philip.
Her mother, father and older sister then barged into the judges' room and demanded an explanation for his remarks.
However, the singer has appeared on TV and radio several times since the last series, and has had months of singing lessons to improve her voice.
She told The Sun: "Loads of people recognised me at the auditions and wanted to have their pictures taken with me. I've done lots of singing since the show... I've been on Radio One with Atomic Kitten."
Talking about her family's behaviour in 2007, the 18-year-old added: "That was all a bit of a fix. Dad will be coming with me for support this time round but he says he's strictly going to keep in the background and not say anything."
That must have come as a shock  but good on the judge not to let him get away with it. We all have to cough up taxes, whether we like it or not and I would not be able to hand a judge a cheque for $ 15 million if I had not paid anything for several years. :crying: I hope this sets an example to other movie stars who earn a packet but don't pay taxes.
The boyfriend of EastEnders star Nicola Cowper was jailed for life yesterday for murdering a man in a row over a mobile phone.
Nicola, who played Cindy Beale's sister Gillian Williams, wept as a judge said Tony McCann must serve at least 21 years.
Convicted bank robber McCann, 49, burst into Lou "Luke" Hodge's home in Twickenham, West London, and stabbed him with a steak knife as he lay in bed.
He had accused him of stealing a mobile to sell for drugs and bullying friends.
He fled to Nicola's home and demanded a lift to a friend's house.
A day earlier McCann, a drug addict with convictions for violence since he was 15, told a policeman "something has to be done" about Mr Hodge.
The Old Bailey jury heard Nicola, 40, who has twin girls with McCann, tipped him off as police searched for him.

Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon is to have a commitment ceremony with her female partner, reports claim.
The actress plans to tie the knot with education activist Christine Marinoni in front of family and friends later this year.
A source told the National Enquirer: "Cynthia and Chris want a quiet autumn ceremony in Vermont under the red leaves. It's supposed to be a very low-key gathering, just for close friends and family."
The pair began dating in 2003 after Nixon ended her 15-year relationship with Danny Mozes, the father of her two children.
She recently revealed that she is in love with Marinoni and described their relationship as "fantastic".
She appeared in an episode of House.
EastEnders star Scott Maslen is ready to marry his long-term girlfriend Estelle Harris.
The actor, who plays bad boy Jack Branning on the BBC One soap, will tie the knot with Estelle in September. They have been in a relationship for eight years and have a seven-year-old son, Zak, together.
A source told The People: "Scott and Estelle are very excited. This is the next step they both want to take in their relationship."
Maslen and Harris are expected to keep details of their plans under wraps for now, as they have reportedly signed an exclusive magazine deal.
Martine McCutcheon has admitted that her role in Echo Beach left her feeling "depressed".
The actress played unhappy housewife Susan Penwarden in the ITV1 soap, a character ten years older than herself.
While the programme's sister show Moving Wallpaper has already been recommissioned, the future of Echo Beach remains uncertain following disappointing ratings and criticism in the press.
"I have to admit I didn't read the reviews," Martine, 31, told the News of the World. "I felt depressed because I was playing a character who'd let herself go, and that state of mind affected me. I could feel myself getting down.
"One night, I decided to go out clubbing with the crew. Jason [Donovan] and I were the oldest there and I put on my skinny jeans, jewellery and make-up. When I came downstairs, everyone was saying how great I looked, how young I looked. I was like: 'Well, I am still young!'"
