Samia Ghadie has revealed that she initially auditioned to play a different character on Coronation Street.

Prior to landing the part of Maria Connor in 2000, the actress tried out for the daughter of Des Barnes's girlfriend in the mid-1990s, a role which eventually went to Emily Aston.

Ghadie told TV Choice: "Do you remember Des Barnes? He had a girlfriend who had a daughter, and it's quite ironic really, because the part went to Emily Aston, who's Sam Aston's sister.

"Me and Emily would always go for auditions, we were at the same drama classes, and she's a gorgeous girl. She's lovely, and she got it. So I was really pleased for Emily.

"Looking back now, I'm glad I didn't get it. But I remember crying on the sofa at home, saying, 'What's wrong with me?'"

Fellow Weatherfield star Sam Aston has played Chesney since he was 10 years old in 2003.

Emily Aston played Becky Palmer between 1996 and 1997 before the character was written out.

Coronation Street star Kate Ford has revealed that she suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The Tracy Barlow actress admitted that her anxiety problem had been "really bad" before her relationship with husband Jon Connerty.

Interviewed in today's Mirror newspaper, Ford divulged: "In my 20s I did have really bad OCD - I'd check things continually.

"I could check the oven 20 times before going to bed and all the sockets had to be turned off. It's like your brain gets stuck in a loop. I do still have a bit of OCD.

"When I'm in Manchester I do this thing on the phone with Jon every single night, where I go through a check-list of things he needs to do before he goes to bed.

"I say, 'Have you checked the oven's off? Have you checked you've locked the back door? Is the car locked? Is the intercom on to hear Otis? Is the alarm on?' I do it every night - I've never missed. I have to do it. One time I couldn't get in touch with him and I couldn't get to sleep.

"Jon indulges me in it. He probably hates it and I don't know whether he's really checked or not, but he says yes! Now when I check things just once I feel I've done really well."

The 35-year-old further disclosed that past problems with panic attacks were worsened by a poor diet and alcohol consumption.

"If you're tired you're more prone to it," she added. "I've had problems with anxiety and panic attacks in the past and if I'm not looking after myself, not getting enough *exercise, eating the wrong things and drinking too much, I'm worse.

"So I'm trying to swim two or three times a week and I don't eat junk food. I've never eaten a McDonald's in my life."

Michelle Keegan has revealed that she is to become flatmates with fellow Corrie star Brooke Vincent.

The Weatherfield actress originally called up Manchester radio station Capital FM to deny a rumour that she was seen dating Mark Wright in the Salford town of Irlam.

The Tina McIntyre star, who split with Max George in July, is quoted as saying: "I am ringing in because this rumour is wrong.

"Everyone knows everyone in Irlam and I never went into Tesco or the buttie shop with Mark - and he's never been in my car. I want to stop this rumour before it goes any further."

Then, Keegan went on to reveal that friend Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) had stayed at her flat for the night, before confirming that the pair would be living together in the near future.

Keegan recently outlined her desire to find the "right guy" following her break-up with George.

Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley has been reportedly given a warning that photographs she sent an ex-boyfriend could appear on the internet.

The Weatherfield actress - Eva Price on the cobbles - has heard that pictures that were taken while she was still with her former lover are "doing the rounds", The Mirror reports.

A source claimed: "She's terrified they could appear on Twitter or Facebook at any moment, and it goes without saying she will be absolutely furious if they do.

"The snaps were sent in confidence but it looks as though somebody is threatening to betray her trust, which is very upsetting and disappointing.

The insider added: "There's nothing she can do apart from cross her fingers and hope for the best."

Earlier this year, the 29-year-old admitted that she was "disillusioned with men" and confirmed she had been "single for a while", adding that she discovered an ex-boyfriend had been unfaithful through a media interview.

Tyldesley, who joined Corrie last summer, made headlines last month for setting her hair on fire at her birthday party.

Coronation Street star Alison King has split from her fiancé Adam Huckett.

The Carla Connor actress will, however, continue to work alongside the sound technician on the ITV soap's set, reports The Sun.

She had taken four months away from Corrie between June and October to enjoy a "nice holiday" with Huckett and the pair's 3-year-old daughter Daisy Mae.

However, an insider suggested they have now split, claiming: "There haven't been any big rows. It's been a difficult decision, especially because they have so many joint friends on the set.

"It's not an ideal situation coming face-to-face with your ex-fiancé every day. But they're determined to stay good mates and want to make it very clear that there isn't anyone else involved."

Alison King's return to work was confirmed by Corrie last week, while on-screen boyfriend Chris Gascoyne was spotted collecting a script from the Manchester studio at the end of September.

The 39-year-old had been engaged to Huckett since last September.

Michelle Keegan has revealed that her heavy involvement in Coronation Street helped her to cope with splitting from Max George.

Keegan opened up for the first time about her break-up with the Wanted member, to whom she was also engaged for some time, in an interview with Hello magazine.

"Obviously it was a very sad time for us, as we were together for 19 months. But I got to think of it as, 'I'm not the only girl who has ever had a break-up'," the star said.

"The worst part for me was having the whole thing played out so publicly. In the end, I had to simply ignore the gossip and throw myself in my work.

"I was really busy with some great storylines and my friends were amazing. But eventually you just have to let things go and get on with life. I'm in a much better place now."

Her character Tina McIntyre has been in the forefront of Corrie this autumn with a surrogacy story that impacts upon her relationship with Tommy Duckworth (Chris Fountain).

Keegan, who was recently linked to rugby player Mark Flanagan, has set out her desire to meet the "right guy" in the near future.

Coronation Street's Brooke Vincent has dismissed rumours that she is moving in with friend and co-star Michelle Keegan.

Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre, told a radio station earlier this month that the pair had plans to become flatmates in her home.

However, asked whether the story was true by the Daily Star, Vincent exclaimed: "No way! Her dog hates me. She has a Chihuahua who keeps trying to bite me. But I do stay at her flat after nights out."

She went on: "It's hard being a girl on telly because you do get scrutinised. I hate it when people think they know you and they don't. People say I'm feisty, but I just stick up for myself. When you are on telly you have to get to grips with people talking about you all the time."

In a separate interview with The Sun, the 20-year-old revealed that she has no plans to leave home, saying: "Mum says she palms me off with Josh [McEachran, her boyfriend] for a week if I'm getting on her nerves.

"But I like living at home and don't see the point in moving out. I don't have to be in at a certain time and I have my freedom. I'm not coming home to an empty house and my dinner is cooked."

Elaborating upon the rapport she has with her mum, the star recalled: "I also remember, a couple of years ago, I came home and said, 'Right, that's it, next week when I'm 18 I'm going off the rails!' Mum said, 'Brooke, you don't book yourself in to go off the rails'.

"The thing is I've always respected mum. Even now, if I've done something she won't like, I'm so scared of going home to tell her - not because I'm scared of her, I just don't want to let her down."

Her Coronation Street character Maria Conner regularly kicks up a stink in Weatherfield, so Samia Ghadie had no trouble dealing with a giant toilet in a bid to prevent household sewage floods.

The actress posed next to the oversized latrine at Manchester's Trafford Centre for United Utilities campaign 'Think You Before You Flush', which aims to raise awareness of what can and can't be sent down the loo.

Ghadie, who has a 3-year-old daughter named Freya with ex-husband Matthew Smith, also called for wet wipe manufacturers to improve packaging labelling so consumers know not to flush them.

"You'd think it would be obvious to put toddler wipes in the bin, but when the packaging says 'flushable' it's no wonder people get confused," she said.

"You've got to bin these items because the last thing you want is a blockage and a flood."

One in every 530 homes in the North West floods every year because unsuitable items are flushed down the toilet, costing United Utilities £13 million.

"This year alone we have had to deal with 28,000 blockages across the North West and most of these are caused by sewer abuse," Tony Griffiths, wastewater network manager at United Utilities, revealed.

Ghadie is currently at the centre of a major Coronation Street storyline involving Maria falling in love with gay friend Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou).

Ex-Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel has claimed that his former show suffered a dip after he left.

However, the actor - who played the evil Frank Foster until March - believes that the ITV soap has since improved.

Revealing that he watches Corrie "religiously", he told The Sun: "I think it had a dip but it feels in very good shape right now."

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old praised writers for the recent return of Ken Barlow's ex Wendy Crozier.

"I really enjoyed the Wendy Crozier storyline. It wasn't obviously done," he gushed.

"There was a three-handed episode the other day between Wendy, Rita and Deirdre which I thought was just classic Corrie."

Deirdre finally realised Wendy's deceit last week when she and Rita visited Ken's former mistress at her home.

Of the soap's departing producer, Lancel added: "I was very pleased to be there during Phil Collinson's reign."

The star, who is starring in a Beatles play in Liverpool as manager Brian Epstein, revealed that "a few of the cast" will attend the first show tonight (November 15).

Coronation Street's Paula Lane has said that she fears co-star Jack P Shepherd could play a prank at her wedding.

The Weatherfield actress, who has been dating Tom Shaw for nearly ten years, suggested that her on-screen husband has played practical jokes on her before.

Speaking to The Sun about her big day, Lane revealed: "Hopefully some of the cast will come for a glass of bubbly. Katherine Kelly and Catherine Tyldesley are great mates so they'll be there.

"And of course Jack P Shepherd. I just hope he doesn't play any pranks - I wouldn't put it past him."

The newspaper claims that the couple, who announced their engagement last December, will set a date for 2014.

Reflecting on the differences between her and character Kylie Platt, she commented: "Kylie wouldn't expect a proposal like mine. David did it by text message. Myself and Kylie are worlds apart."

However, the star acknowledged: "Sometimes Kylie does emerge, bad drivers really anger me and in those moments my friends are like, 'Ooh, Kylie's creeping out'."

Ghadie with skating partner Sylvain Longchambon]

The 30-year-old actress broke up with Thorp, 35, before Christmas.

The couple's characters, Maria Connor and Chris Gray, were also an item in Coronation Street.

Ghadie and Thorp began a relationship just weeks after ending their real-life marriages to other partners early in 2011.

The time they have spent apart because of work commitments has reportedly proved too difficult for the pair.

Sources told The Sun: "She's had enough and decided to call time on the relationship. Both she and Will were obviously a bit upset because it was just before Christmas. But now she's really happy being single and is ready to mingle again."

Ghadie confirmed: "We've split up - that's it."

The soap star is paired with Sylvain Longchambon, 32, in the new series of ITV1's Dancing on Ice, which starts on Sunday, January 6.

Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson has reportedly played an email prank on co-star Andy Whyment.

Gregson is said to have hacked Whyment's email account, before inviting his entire address book to his 'coming out party', reports The Sun.

The email allegedly read: "Please all come to my coming out party. I've decided to stop living a lie.

"I've realised that men make me happy and full of joy and other things."

The prank apparently occurred when the married actor left his email account open on his mobile phone in Gregson's eyesight when he was called away.

While most friends and workmates figured out it was a joke, at least one neighbour thought the revelation was true.

A source said: "Everyone thought it was hilarious and obviously Andy took it in his stride.

"Simon is the real joker in the pack and is always sparring with his co-stars, particularly Alan Halsall (Tyrone Dobbs), Craig Charles (Lloyd Mullaney), Mike Le Vell (Kevin Webster) and Andy, of course.

"People thought it was a wind-up, but apparently one of the neighbours who received the email actually thought Andy and his wife had decided to come out and reveal their marriage was a sham and that Andy was gay.

"[Wife] Nicola tweeted to Alan Halsall, 'My neighbour believed it'. I think she quickly put them right."

Last year, Whyment - who plays Kirk Sutherland on the ITV soap - said that he wants to stay in Coronation Street for as long as possible.

A beauty salon set up by the fiancée of Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has closed down.

The salon, called Dollface, was opened by Shepherd and Lauren Shippey less than a year ago, The Mirror reports.

However, it closed late last year without warning, and the shop's Twitter page has now announced that the premises had to shut due to "unforeseen circumstances".

Shopkeepers in the neighbouring area of Wilmslow, Cheshire admitted that they had not known that the salon was closing.

One said: "They shut up before Christmas, I don't know why. They hadn't even been there a year."

Shepherd, who plays hairdresser David Platt in the ITV soap, will soon discover that his on-screen wife Kylie is pregnant.

Kylie actress Paula Lane recently revealed that "evil David Platt" could return once he discovers that he may not be the father of the child.

The 24-year-old has two children in real life, one with fiancée Shippey. The pair reconciled last year after it emerged that he had fathered a child with another woman.

"But girls still called me Adam half the time. It's weird when the girl shouts out your character's name in bed.

"It's also an easy excuse to kick them out on the street and not have to pay for dinner though!"

Michelle Collins has spoken of a recent incident on the London Tube which left her shaken.

The Coronation Street actress revealed that a group of ten youths were aggressive and threatening towards her after she was spotted by them in a train carriage.

"They were like a pack of wolves. I felt so scared and vulnerable," Collins told The Sun.

"Some of them looked as young as 15 but they were screaming abuse at me, calling me a f**king wh*re, a slag and a bitch.

"There was one ringleader, a girl, who was leading the pack while the others just watched laughing.

"They were off their heads - I could smell the booze coming off them. My heart was pounding. I just kept thinking, 'This is turning really nasty'. They could have had knives - and they were hammered.

"I got off the train as soon as I could but they followed me until I lost them in the crowd."

The incident occurred while Collins was on her way to the London birthday party of her Coronation Street co-star Charlie Condou.

She boarded the Tube at Highgate in North London at around 7pm on Saturday (January 12).

Collins said: "Suddenly I heard this ear-splitting shouting and swearing as the gang got on the train. They were really drunk and carrying bottles of wine and beer, and talking about going to get drugs.

"I kept my head down, but saw one of the gang fall onto a girl passenger sitting near me. They thought it was hysterical.

"Then one of the girls noticed me. She shouted, 'It's that bird Stella from the telly!' I politely asked them to leave me alone but they started abusing me, saying, 'Are you too f**king good to talk to us? You think you're some kind of f**king A-lister, but Corrie is s**t and you're s**t in it'.

"They were scary because they were unpredictable, and they were spoiling for a fight. It was all I could do not to cry."

Collins eventually left the train after it pulled into a station, only for the group to follow her on the platform. However, she managed to run up an escalator and escape into the crowd.

She said: "I felt threatened. In a packed carriage, not one person said, 'Leave her alone.'

"I would always stick up for someone who was being unfairly treated. It's a terrible reflection on our society that people are too scared to do the same."

Collins currently plays landlady Stella Price in the ITV soap, having previously played Cindy Beale in rival soap EastEnders.

Coronation Street star Alan Halsall has pledged a long-term commitment to the ITV soap.

The Tyrone Dobbs actor, who joined Corrie in 1998, hopes to equal his late friend Bill Tarmey's 31-year service to the Manchester-based serial.

"I'm starting my 15th year, which just feels crazy to me," he told the Radio Times. "Bill desperately wanted to get to 30 years and, in the end I think he did 31.

"And recently, I've started to realise that I'd quite like to do 31 years and emulate Bill Tarmey. I don't think I've any chance of catching Bill Roache – I don't think they'd have me that long, to be honest. But if I could get to those years of service that Bill Tarmey [did], then I'd be thrilled."

Giving an insight into his close friendship with Tarmey, Halsall recalled: "When I started on Corrie, I'd just left school. I'm a Salford kid born and bred and I'd grown up watching Coronation Street.

"So there I was with this dream job and I'm going out drinking and getting recognised and Bill sat me down and told me about all the options of how my life could go.

"And then he said, 'But you've got no choice - you're going down this road!' He steered me along the path of my career.

"I'm so lucky to have had Bill. He took me under his wing and if it hadn't have been for him, I don't think I'd be stood here right now."

The 30-year-old added: "Bill was very much like a father figure to me both on and off screen. He'd often ring me up of a night and, even after he'd retired, we'd meet up every other Thursday in the pub to have a beer.

"He was a huge part of my life. He knew what I thought of him and I knew what he thought of me. It's not something we ever hid. He knew how much I loved him and vice versa."

However, Halsall, nominated for 'Serial Drama Performance' at this year's National Television Awards, admitted that he would find it difficult to speak about Tarmey in his acceptance speech should he win the gong.

"I'd like to [dedicate the award to Bill], but I honestly think that if I went up there and tried to speak about Bill, it would feel too raw," he said.

Coronation Street has picked up the 'Best Soap/Continuing Drama' prize at the Broadcast Awards 2013.

The ITV show beat EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Casualty and Holby City to the title at tonight's (January 30) ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

It is the second consecutive year that Corrie has won the category, and comes just a week after the soap was named 'Best Serial' at the National Television Awards too.

Catherine Tyldesley, who plays Eva Price, took to her Twitter account to share her joy at winning the award and post pictures of her co-stars at the ceremony.

The Broadcast Awards are determined by a panel of judges to reward excellence in television each year.

The Chase, Educating Essex and Holy Flying Circus were among the other winners at this year's event, while BBC Two took home the coveted 'Channel of the Year' accolade.

Former Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson is engaged after proposing to his girlfriend of 12 years.

The Jim McDonald actor asked best friend and fellow actor Neil Morrissey to help with his proposal to Debbie Savage since she had already turned him down once.

She had previously insisted that the pair didn't need to get married, but Lawson said he knew she wouldn't refuse him a second time if the Men Behaving Badly star was present.

He told The Sun: "I know I'll be with Debbie for the rest of my life.

"When I met Debbie my life was a shambles. I had just left my second wife and barely had a penny. I couldn't survive without her now."

Savage said: "Neil burst into tears when I did. Then Charlie did. Then we ordered some good red wine."

Asked if Lawson is anything like Jim in real life, she joked: "If he was, I certainly wouldn't be marrying him. I'm so pleased I said yes - it finally just felt right."

The couple, who live in Prestbury, Cheshire, are arranging a summer wedding.

Jim McDonald, best known for his drama-filled marriage to Liz, was last seen in Corrie in 2011 holding up a bank.

Coronation Street has been rocked by a homophobia scandal after staff complained that hate-filled comments were made on the ITV1 show’s set.

Bosses on Britain’s most-watched soap have now pinned a memo to the wall of the iconic studios, ordering actors and crew that anti-gay slurs will not be tolerated.

The memo says: “We have just been made aware of *several recent instances of homophobic remarks being made on the studio floor.

“We are sure the vast majority of people working on Coronation Street find such behaviour unacceptable.

“But we’d like to make it absolutely clear that this is completely unacceptable. ITV has a bullying and harassment policy which clearly states that such behaviour may lead to disciplinary proceedings.”

The notice was placed in three locations around the soap’s Manchester studios following two complaints.

Gay Corrie actor Antony Cotton, 37, is believed to have been the subject of homophobic remarks. It is not known if he heard them, but no *complaint has been made.

A Corrie insider revealed that show executives *issued the warning because they feared an “unpleasant *culture” had started to develop.

Our insider said: “This is an extremely worrying development. Coronation Street prides itself on being a tolerant and accepting place. One of our most popular actors, Antony Cotton, is gay and so is our outgoing executive producer Phil Collinson. We have had a number of gay characters on The Cobbles.

“The fact people are making homophobic jokes on set is unacceptable. And what makes this even more worrying is it seems this was not an isolated incident.

“From what we know, a couple of *members of crew were deeply offended by the kind of language being used by some people on set.

“It is unclear whether it was crew or cast who were making the jokes, but it seems certain people were starting to make some really crude comments and that a nasty culture was developing.

“We took the view that we had to nip this in the bud before it got out of control. It was a big call putting these notices up as we were aware there was every chance it could leak out, but the situation was serious enough we had to take action.

“There is a duty of care to all our staff and none of them should be made to feel uncomfortable while they’re at work because of the behaviour of others.

“Cast and crew alike have been left in no doubt that anyone who continues to use homophobic language will be severely disciplined. People caught in future face the real possibility of getting sacked. We have taken decisive action and are hoping this is the end of it.”

The warning notice, dated February 4, was signed by senior producers Kieran *Roberts, Stuart Blackburn and Robbie Sandison.

The soap scooped a string of accolades at the National TV awards and millions of fans have been hooked by same-sex storylines involving Sean Tully, played by Antony Cotton, and Marcus Dent, played by Charlie Condou.

There was also a much-loved plot between Brooke Vincent’s character *Sophie Webster and actress Sacha Parkinson’s Sian Powers.

But despite the storylines being a hit with fans, the show, whose original writer Tony Warren was also homosexual, has been caught up in a gay row before, when some of its stars criticised the plots.

Soap legend Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden, branded the number of gay characters “excessive”.

And Nick Cochrane – who was not on the show at the time but played Andy McDonald between 1989 and 1996 – added: “Fans love Corrie for its *traditional values. I don’t think it’s the right platform to highlight so many gay issues all at the same time.”

It forced Corrie boss Phil Collinson to give a series of interviews denying he had given the show a “gay agenda”.

Speaking at the time of the row, he said: “We have a very broad cast with *approximately 65 regulars.

“There are only two gay couples, just to set the record straight: Sean and *Marcus, who are a very loving couple, and Sophie and Sian, who are a young part of a *family who are loved, the Websters.

“There is no gay soapbox, we’re just telling stories about love. And the *audience want to see that, I believe.”

Last night a Coronation Street spokeswoman said: “ITV takes the feelings of all employees extremely seriously. It was felt that this message should be put up as a reminder to everybody.”

Former Coronation Street star Sean Wilson has split from his wife of 16 years.

The actor, who played Martin Platt for 20 years, was left heartbroken when Gaynor walked out on him for an older man.

She has moved into a small bungalow with their two children, aged 14 and 12, just a mile away from the £500,000 family home

Gaynor, 49, has also given up jobs as a hairdresser and yoga teacher and is working on a knitting stall in a covered market in Stockport.

Sean, 47 – now an award-*winning cheese maker and on TV in Channel Five’s Great British Cookbook – told friends he was, “absolutely devastated”.

They said he cannot believe Gaynor has left him for a man in his fifties. A friend of the star said: “Sean and Gaynor were *together for years and as far as he was concerned everything was still going really well.

“They have two children and Sean was convinced they would end up spending the rest of their lives together.

“Then he found out about her new relationship, which was bad enough. But the fact this guy was older than him has further knocked his confidence.”

Sean joined Corrie in 1985 and was involved in a string of *explosive storylines, including his affair with Rebecca Hopkins (Jill Halfpenny) behind the back of wife Gail (Helen Worth).

He was axed in 2005 when writers admitted they had taken the character as far as they could. Sean played a few minor TV roles on shows including Waterloo Road before launching The Saddleworth Cheese Company.

He won three gongs at the 2009 British Cheese Awards.

But despite his success in the culinary world, friends say he lost some of his confidence when he lost his Corrie role, which may have contributed to the marriage breakdown.

The source said: “Sean is *naturally a very confident guy, but getting dropped from Corrie really got to him. He had a couple of roles after that but nowhere near the same level of success. It did affect him.

“But Gaynor hasn’t done very well out of it and is now working on a market and living in a small bungalow.

“Sean, on the other hand, is doing really well. He’s written a cookbook and he’s back on television where he belongs.

“It has been a tough time for him, but his life is very much on the up again.”

A spokeswoman for Sean confirmed the star’s separation saying: “I’ve spoken to Sean and, yes, his wife left him for anolder man.”

Bill Roache has reportedly split from his girlfriend Emma Jesson.

The 80-year-old Coronation Street actor is said to have ended his three-year relationship with the TV weathergirl, according to The Sun.

He is reported to have "drifted apart" from Jesson, who is 36 years his junior.

A source said: "Emma and Bill drifted apart towards the end of last year and have made the decision to split up.

"They remain good friends."

Roache began dating Jesson months after the death of his wife of 31 years, Sara Mottram, in 2009.

However, Jesson has since claimed that their relationship ended due to his spiritual beliefs. He is said to be a member of religious group the Pure Love Movement.

She said: "Our relationship in terms of love is definitely finished.

"Bill's spiritual beliefs became more of a priority last year. He wants that to be his path now and I accept that as he needs to be at peace with himself. We always knew 2012 would be a big year for him.

"Spiritually, it was an evolutionary year and really important to him. We're still very close and talk regularly, but we aren't together as a couple. We still have a relationship, but only as friends."

The show already shoots in HD and carried out 3D pilot tests two years ago alongside Emmerdale.

ITV insiders said that Coronation Street plans to make announcements about "minor changes" soon.

Corrie is thought to be the first regular drama looking at 3D options, as TV manufacturers develop new ways to watch 3D TV without glasses.

Corrie star Jack P Shepherd has revealed that two of his character's T-shirts have been banned by show bosses.

The actor spoke out on Twitter after being told that David Platt can no longer wear a slogan shirt displaying the word 'Sha-ting', in reference to the sound effect Keith Lemon uses when revealing the scores on ITV2's Celebrity Juice.

Corrie chiefs made the decision after a handful of viewers complained that the shirt was offensive.

Shepherd tweeted: "Oh by the way, some 'no lives' have complained about the 'Shat-ting' T-shirt on Corrie so it has been taken off air.

"But I'm going to auction it off for charity so I will get the T-shirt next week and give you the details if ya want it. X"

Asked why people had complained, he replied: "They thought it said Shat-ing, get it?"

Shepherd added that another T-shirt with the slogan 'Turn Me On' won't be seen again either, confirming: "That's been banned too."

The 25-year-old has previously been caught up in another wardrobe row as scenes had to be re-shot in 2008 when the show's compliance team spotted that David was wearing a shirt containing the words 'Schwetty Nuts'.

Tina O'Brien has set up an acting class for children in Manchester.

The former Coronation Street actress has teamed up with friend and primary school teacher Esther Morgan to create The Drama Mob, a class for children aged between 4-11 years old.

The classes are held at the parsonage gardens in Didsbury, and usually last for one hour every day, costing £7.50.

"My students are all so talented I've been amazed – many are way ahead of me when I was their age!" O'Brien is quoted as saying in The Sun.

Speaking about the venture, O'Brien told Didsbury Life: "I felt that my daughter would benefit from attending a drama class to encourage confidence building and self esteem.

"But most classes advertised in the local area seemed to be quite big companies that followed a very intense structure, whereas I was looking for something much more child-friendly where the emphasis was on smaller tailor-made classes in a safe and nurturing environment to help a young child's imagination flourish.

"I started talking to my very close friend Esther Morgan, and we quickly realised it was something that we would love to offer the local children of Didsbury and the surrounding areas and decided to set up our own drama classes.

"We have been childhood friends for 18 years - Esther is a primary school teacher specialising in early years and has been working in schools in Manchester for the past eight years.

"We really feel that together we can offer a drama class that will be fun and exciting but that also encourages the development of the children's acting abilities through drama games improvisation and for the older children script work and camera acting/stage work."

Tina O'Brien was tipped for a return to Coronation Street as Sarah Platt back in December.

However, the actress later denied that she had entered talks with ITV producers to make a return

Corrie tar Bill Roache has appeared to claim that sex abuse victims are paying the price for their actions in "previous lives".

The actor, who plays Weatherfield's Ken Barlow, made the controversial remarks in an interview on New Zealand television.

Roache told TV NZ: "If you accept that you are pure love, and if you know that you are pure love and therefore live that pure love, these things won't happen to you."

Interviewer Garth Bray then asked: "To some people that sounds perhaps like you're saying victims bring things on themselves - is that what you're saying?"

Roache replied: "Not quite, but then yes I am, because everything that happens to us has been a result of what we have been in previous lives."

The 80-year-old's comments follow a number of recent interviews he has given regarding his involvement in a spiritual group called the Pure Love Movement.

His appearance on TV NZ also saw him give his views on paedophilia in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Roache said: "Paedophilia is absolutely horrendous. Paedophiles should be sought out, rooted out and dealt with. But there's a fringe here, a fringe of people who, particularly pop singers, they have these groupies, these girls, who come, they're sexually active, sexually mature, they don't ask for their birth certificate, they don't know what age they may be.

"But they're certainly not grooming them and exploiting them, but they can be caught in this trap. These people are instantly stigmatised, some will be innocent, some will not, but until such time as it's proven there should be anonymity for both."

He added: "If someone has done something wrong, the law will take its course. But all of us, whether they're proven guilty or not, we should never be judgemental about anybody, ever.

"We shouldn't go round condemning, unforgiving. We should always be totally forgiving about everything."

Dr Jon Bird, of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, branded Roache's remarks "completely disgusting".

Bird told The Mirror: "Mr Roache has belittled the hurt and pain of others without any understanding of the circumstances himself. He should be ashamed of himself."

Coronation Street has won in the 'Soap and Continuing Drama' category at the 2013 RTS Awards.

The long-running serial was honoured at tonight's (March 19) ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, which annually celebrates the British television industry and its output.

It heads up a successful year for the soap, which has seen similar wins at this year's National Television, Broadcast and TRIC Awards.

Other awards during the evening included Sherlock for 'Best Drama Series' and the London 2012 Olympics for 'Live Event', with Sean Bean and Olivia Coleman also picking up acting honours for their respective roles in the second series of Accused.

Coronation Street is currently broadcasting the dramatic aftermath of the fire at the Rovers Return, in which viewers have seen Karl Munro (John Michie) deliberately commit arson, with Karl's former partners Stella Price (Michelle Collins) and Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) trapped in the blaze.

The ongoing abuse storyline featuring Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and Kirsty Soames (Natalie Gumede) is also set to come to a head next week, as Tyrone's fate is decided in court.

The pictures - leaked by Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald) and props buyer Peter Eccleston - have prompted Corrie's bosses to send a memo to cast and crew banning the use of mobiles on set.

A Coronation Street source said to The Sun: "The Twitter stuff has been getting out of hand recently, with people posting all kinds of photos which could be detrimental to the show.

"The bosses would rather people didn't know what the Rovers looks like ahead of time, and these snaps clearly blew that."

Gregson posted the first picture of the new Rovers showing co-stars Kym Lomas (Michelle Connor), Craig Charles (Lloyd Mullaney) and Alison King (Carla Connor) joking around and eating peanuts. Sensing he might be in trouble, Gregson wrote alongside the photo: "Naughty friends at work I give it 3 minutes before we're told off."

The behind-the-scenes picture, which revealed the pub's new burgundy and cream interior, also showed character Paul at a table in the background. Viewers have seen the troubled fireman question his future in Weatherfield after splitting from love Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) in episodes last week.

A Coronation Street spokesman said: "Mobile phones are not allowed on set as part of general studio protocol. The memo that mentioned this was not prompted by a specific incident."

Coronation Street stars David Neilson and Chris Gascoyne like to rehearse high-brow plays together behind the scenes.

The two enjoy acting out the work of Nobel Prize-winning Samuel Beckett in the show's green room, The Sun reports.

Nelson, who plays Roy Cropper in the soap, and Gascoyne, who plays Peter Barlow, even get their co-stars to join in.

A Coronation Street source said: "You would not necessarily think it from watching them on screen, but Chris and David are very serious actors. They love running through lines from Samuel Beckett plays and discussing his work.

"They are particularly interested in one of his plays and one day they would love to put on a production together. They are far too busy at the moment, but maybe in a couple of years they'll take some time off and go for it.

"When they need a hand with any of the scenes they get Sylvia and Malcolm to help. It really is quite a strange sight and not one you'd expect to find backstage at Corrie. It's a bit of a contrast to the green room when some of the younger cast members are in there. They prefer to talk about clothes, cars and nights out.

"People wouldn't put Chris and David together - they're from different generations and their onscreen personas are at opposite ends of the scale - but they are great mates.

"Still, you couldn't imagine Peter and Roy having an intellectual debate about the work of Samuel Beckett."

Coronation Street star Samia Ghadie has moved in with her Dancing on Ice partner Sylvain Longchambon.

The pair explained it made sense as French Longchambon doesn't have a lot of possessions in England and they spend most of their time together anyway.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Ghadie said: "We're pretty much living together now. We spend so much time with each other anyway."

Longchambon added: "It seemed like the natural thing to do. I don't have a big place in England either."

Ghadie also took the chance to set the record straight about her recent boob job reports.

The actress said: "Yes, I have had a boob job, but it wasn't something that was done on a whim.

"After Freya was born, my boobs just disappeared. Anybody who knows me will know that it's something I talked about having done. I wanted to feel womanly again."

A fourth Coronation Street actor has reportedly been accused of sexual misconduct against a 12-year-old girl.

The Sun claims that the actor, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is facing an investigation by Lancashire Police after a woman in her 50s made a complaint about incidents dating back to the 1960s.

According to the newspaper, the actor - who no longer appears on screen, but was a long-running character - befriended the woman when she went to the studio seeking autographs.

He allegedly offered to drive the girl home and is accused of doing something "very inappropriate" to her in the soap's Manchester studio complex.

A friend of the woman told the newspaper: "She used to go to the studios to get autographs. It was a real highlight when the stars stood and talked to you. Sometimes they invited the girls into the studios."

The woman apparently confided in the friend: "I didn't realise what was going on."

Lancashire Police refused to comment when contacted by The Sun.

It is the latest allegation against cast members of the ITV1 soap, following the arrests of Bill Roache (Ken Barlow), Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster) and Andrew Lancel (Frank Foster).

Roache has been charged with two counts of rape against a 15-year-old girl in the 1960s and is on bail ahead of a court appearance on June 10.

Le Vell recently pleaded not guilty to 19 charges, including raping a child, indecently assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child. In April, Lancel pleaded not guilty to six charges of indecent assault on a child under 16.

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has announced that he is to be a father again.

The 25-year-old actor, who is engaged to long-term girlfriend Lauren Shippey, revealed the news on his Twitter page this afternoon (May 23).

He told fans: "Me and @LaurenShippey are pleased to announce we are expecting a baby, we are both very happy. X"

The couple have been dating since they were 14 and already have 4-year-old daughter Nyla together.

Their relationship survived a crisis in 2010 after Shepherd allegedly fathered a baby son when he had a one-night stand with another woman.

On screen in Coronation Street, Shepherd's character David Platt is also awaiting fatherhood as his wife Kylie is pregnant. However, viewers know that David's half-brother Nick may actually be the dad.

Shepherd joked today: "Thanks for all your kind tweets for me and @LaurenShippey ... I like the "is it Nick's?" comments haha."

Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride has been told she has a job for life on the show.

The actress has played Weatherfield's Deirdre Barlow for more than 40 years.

Kirkbride was very upset over the allegations that her on-screen husband Bill Roache had raped a girl in the 1960s, The Sun reports.

The show's bosses apparently spotted this and decided to let her know how important she is to the soap.

Producer Stuart Blackburn told her that she will remain in the programme for however long she wants.

Blackburn also admitted that he plans to allow her character to develop into a Weatherfield legend, just like her screen mum Blanche Hunt.

A Coronation Street source said: "Anne is a sensitive person and she was incredibly upset when Bill was arrested.

"They are very close and have known each other for more than 40 years. Losing him as a friend and an ally on set really shook her up."

The source continued: "They are a caring bunch at Corrie so Stuart and the rest of the senior guys decided to let her know just how highly they think of her.

"She has been told that she is crucial to the future of the show and to completely forget any doubts and worries she may have had.

"As far as they are concerned she has a job for life and will only leave when she feels it's the right time to move on. They have said she can grow old on set and eventually become a younger, funnier version of Blanche. It's great news for all concerned."

It is great to see that the writers aren't of the opinion that Deirdre and Ken come as a pair.

I hope that Deirdre does become a funnier version of her mum, but Blanche is a tough act to follow; especially as it was usually Deirdre that was trying to reign Blanche in.

Coronation Street bosses have reportedly handed out huge new contracts to ten of the cast.

Michelle Keegan's recent announcement that she will bow out of the soap next year has encouraged producers to keep as many of the cast as possible, The Sun reports.

They have given new contracts to stars such as Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw), Kym Lomas (Michelle Connor), Alan Halsall (Tyronne Dobbs), Kate Ford (Tracey Barlow) and Antony Cotton (Sean Tully).

Others who have secured new one-year packages are Jimmi Harkishin (Dev Alahan), Sam Aston (Chesney Brown), Mikey North (Gary Windass), Debbie Rush (Anna Windass) and Andy Whyment (Kirk Sutherland).

A soap source said: "Corrie's doing brilliantly at the moment and everyone thinks there is a really good balance of actors in the current cast.

"But Michelle's decision to leave the show proves just how quickly things can change. That was a real blow and Corrie can ill afford to lose any more actors as popular as her."

The source continued: "With that in mind, [producer] Stuart [Blackburn] has decided to tie down as many of the big stars as possible to new one-year deals. He has rewarded some of them with decent five-figure pay rises as well.

"He's been there for a few months now and has worked out who he thinks is integral to the show. He's determined not to lose any of them."

Georgia May Foote, who plays Katy Armstrong, has recently signed a new contract. Kym Lomas, who plays Michelle Connor, has also signed a new contract, as well as Brooke Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster.

A Coronation Street producer has plugged his son's musical career by including one of his songs in scenes in the Rovers Return.

Terry Dyddgen-Jones arranged for a track by son Sion Russell Jones to play in the background of the famous Weatherfiled pub in scenes that aired on June 3, reports The Sun.

A source said: "Terry is respected and hugely popular, so when he asked if he could give his son a bit of a leg up by getting his music played in The Rovers no-one had a problem.

"He was open about it and got it approved by the relevant people.

"Just under nine million viewers watched the episode on which the track was played. You can't get much better exposure than that."

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter released his debut album And Suddenly in 2011.

The insider added: "Terry's a very proud dad and he will do anything he can to help his son's career. If he keeps this up, Sion's record sales could go through the roof!"

Terry has previously worked on Emmerdale and Heartbeat, as well as writing storylines such as the deaths of Des Barnes and Charlie Stubbs in his 16 years on Coronation Street.

ITV has warned that it will take legal action against Channel 4 if the broadcaster airs a forthcoming Dispatches episode which apparently accuses Coronation Street stars of plugging fake products.

An investigation carried out by Dispatches reportedly saw programme makers set up a booth at a "gifting event" in Manchester, which was attended by famous faces from Coronation Street in February.

Investigators apparently set up a fake brand called Puttana Aziendale - Italian for "corporate whore" - and gave out various bogus products.

These included an energising bracelet said to have been 'blessed by Buddhist monks' and an anti-ageing skin toner which promised to have used water 'from a mountain well in Bali'.

The aim of the programme was to see whether celebrities would break Advertising Standards Authority guidelines by plugging the products on Twitter.

The ASA states that plugs for freebies should be clearly marked as adverts.

Coronation Street actresses Catherine Tyldesley (Eva Price) and Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) are among those who attended the Manchester event and are expected to feature in the Dispatches programme. The event in question also played host to a number of genuine firms.

ITV bosses have today (July 3) strongly denied any wrongdoing on the part of the cast members and have threatened to take legal action if the episode is shown.

An ITV spokesperson commented: "The programme has made allegations that are false and highly defamatory, and we have written to the producer threatening legal action if they decide to broadcast."

Meanwhile, a Channel 4 spokesman said: "We don't comment on upcoming Dispatches programmes."

Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley has addressed reports linking her to an alleged Twitter scandal.

The 29-year-old, who plays Weatherfield's Eva Price, is one of a handful of cast members expected to feature in a forthcoming Dispatches episode which accuses Corrie stars of plugging fake products on Twitter.

Investigators working for the Channel 4 show set up a fake brand called Puttana Aziendale - Italian for "corporate whore" - before giving out various bogus items at a gifting event which was attended by famous faces in Manchester.

Tyldesley and co-star Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) are among those who later mentioned the products in thank-you messages on Twitter.

Advertising Standard Agency (ASA) rules state that online plugs in return for freebies should always be clearly marked as adverts. However, ITV insists that no such arrangement was made in this case.

Tyldesley responded to the row with a light-hearted remark on Twitter this afternoon (July 3).

Her co-star Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald) also made a similar joke, saying: "Life's good sorry god please don't take legal action."

The aim of the Dispatches investigation was to see whether celebrities would break ASA guidelines in their tweets.

ITV bosses have today (July 3) strongly denied any wrongdoing on the part of Coronation Street's cast members, insisting that they made no deals at the Manchester event and were merely responding to tweets which had been sent to them.

A spokesperson commented: "The programme has made allegations that are false and highly defamatory, and we have written to the producer threatening legal action if they decide to broadcast."

A further ITV statement added: "Cast members responded to tweets sent directly to them by some brands to say thank you. Contrary to the allegations which have been made, they didn't receive free gifts in return for tweeting or indulge in any kind of unlawful marketing promotion."

Meanwhile, a Channel 4 spokesman said: "We don't comment on upcoming Dispatches programmes."

An ITV legal executive has accused Channel 4 of "shoddy journalism" in an ongoing row over an upcoming Dispatches programme featuring Coronation Street stars.

A future edition of the documentary show will reportedly accuse Coronation Street cast members of plugging fake products on Twitter.

The episode, titled Celebs, Brands and Fake Fans, is scheduled to air on Monday, August 5, despite threats of legal action from ITV.

As the dispute continues, a letter sent by ITV's group legal director Andrew Garard to Channel 4 has been published by The Guardian this afternoon (July 31).

In the letter, Garard writes: "If you are seriously proposing to broadcast the programme and to include any allegations of wrongdoing against ITV and/or its employees in it, we (and the relevant individuals) will have no option but to issue proceedings against you for libel.

"As you will appreciate, as a fellow broadcaster ITV does not wish [to] have to take such action, but in the circumstances we will have no choice. Quite frankly, this is a shoddy piece of journalism in an attempt to create a 'scandal' from entirely innocuous conduct."

As previously reported, the Dispatches investigation saw programme makers set up a booth at a "gifting event" in Manchester, which was attended by famous faces from Coronation Street in February.

Coronation Street bosses reportedly want Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal baby boy to make a cameo appearance on the soap.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their first son George Alexander Louis last month.

While EastEnders reflected the national talking point by slotting in a newly-filmed scene at the last minute, Coronation Street was unable to do the same.

Producers now want to feature the baby in a special episode to make up for failing to cover his birth last month.

The show's creative director John Whiston told the Daily Star: "We want the royal baby to come and open the new street.

"It would be fantastic to get Kate, William and George there with a pair of tiny baby scissors.

"The soap has a long historical connection with the Royal Family so having the newest arrival on the set would be perfect.

"We didn't have time to put the birth in a storyline. We did with the Jubilee but we knew what date that would happen!"

Prince Charles made a cameo appearance in the show as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations back in 2000.

The 25-year-old - who left Waterloo Road earlier this year after eight years playing Janeece Bryant - said that she would "never say never" to returning to the series.

However, she said that she thinks it was the "right time" for her to leave the school-based drama.

"The show was moving up to Scotland, and it's a role I'd done for a long time - eight years is a long time for anyone to stay in the same job. I don't think they could do that much more with the character.

"If Waterloo Road asked me back, of course I'd have to consider that, but for now I'm looking into sinking my teeth into new roles and new challenges," she added.

Speaking on ITV's The Alan Titchmarsh Show today (October 29), Nicholls revealed that she has a soft spot for David - just like her character Audrey Roberts.

She explained: "My grandson David - who I will be truthful about - I know he's supposed to be really awful, but I love him. Sue does, and grandma Audrey. I think like a lot of grandparents, they kind of have an affinity with their grandchildren sometimes.

"I know he's done dastardly things and people say, 'Isn't he dreadful?' but I love him and I think Audrey tries to help him more than perhaps the others. And anyway, for goodness sake, come on, his brother slept with his wife. I'm on his side!"

Nicholls also discussed Coronation Street's upcoming set move, revealing that she has mixed feelings over the soap leaving Manchester city centre and moving into MediaCityUK.

She said: "We're moving, I think about Christmas, to the other side of Manchester which is the Quays - which is lovely. I love it and I go there a lot, but I'm quite happy where we are at the minute. It'll be a great wrench and I think Manchester will be sad, because it's part of Manchester.

"I have to admit, without being rude to Manchester, the building was pretty hideous, being a '60s building. But I think Manchester were proud of having it there in the centre, not just for the street but for all the other things they did.

"I will miss it, mainly because at the moment I live just a street away and I can volt over the gate to work. When we move, that's if I'm asked to move, I'll have to pull my socks up and get up much earlier. But we'll see, it's all new, it's all exciting."

Ceri said: "It's all very raw for the family now, but the wider public will say a prayer with us for a great life making people happy and doing a job he adored.

"My dad was a showman through and through. When the final curtain fell he would want people to remember him as someone who tried to spread as much happiness as he possibly could."

Stennett had a career in showbiz spanning over six decades and starred in Crossroads as Sid Hooper and Coronation Street as Hilda Ogden's brother.

He suffered a stroke around three weeks ago.

Stennett's showbiz career began in World War Two when he played guitar in a jazz quintet.

He went on to perform in various BBC comedy shows and frequently appeared on the stage.

"I saw David Neilson (Roy) in the theatre once and I had to squeeze past him to get to my chair, then I said, 'Sorry, I just have to say, I absolutely love you'. I bet he was thinking, 'Er, who are you? You're really too close to me'."

Maxwell Martin will star in BBC One's Death Comes to Pemberley, which will air across three consecutive nights over the Christmas and New Year period, beginning on Boxing Day at 8.15pm.

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd and long-term girlfriend Lauren Shippey have welcomed the arrival of their second child together.

Shippey gave birth to baby son Reuben last night (December 17). The new arrival, who was two weeks overdue, weighed in at 8lb 12oz.

Shepherd announced the news on his Twitter page this morning, confirming that mother and baby are both doing well.

Shepherd and Shippey announced their baby news in May. They already have a 4-year-old daughter Nyla together.

The couple have been together since they were 14 and their relationship survived a crisis in 2010 when Shepherd allegedly fathered a baby son when he had a one-night stand with another woman.

Shepherd is currently on a six-week filming break from Coronation Street, allowing him to spend time with his newly-extended family.

Jack and Vera Duckworth figures at Madame Tussauds

Liz Dawn, who played Vera for over 30 years, helped to unveil the figures as they had their first outing this morning (March 26).

The waxworks, which took four months to create, show Jack and Vera as they were in the 1990s.

Dawn and the family of the late Bill Tarmey - who played Jack - were all closely consulted during the process. Archive footage supplied by ITV also helped to ensure high accuracy.

Speaking today, Dawn commented: "I can't believe how well they've captured the tiniest details - it really is like looking into a Vera-shaped mirror.

"It's lovely to know that a character I've played for so long has had such an effect on the nation that she's been immortalised like this - if only they could have done it when I was 20!"

Bill Tarmey's widow Alma added: "I am sure Bill would have been very proud and honoured to see himself, as Jack, immortalised in such a lifelike figure.

"For myself it brought back many happy memories of the character Bill had portrayed for so many years, truly amazing! My congratulations and appreciation to the sculptor and all those involved in the production of the figure."

The Rovers Return set at Madame Tussauds Blackpool already featured Ken and Deirdre Barlow, Hilda Ogden and Bet Lynch.

Coronation Street star Barbara Knox has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The 80-year-old actress, who plays Rita Tanner, is said to have been held by police in Cheshire shortly after her daughter Maxine Ashcroft was arrested for the same offence.

Ashcroft, 56, was first to be arrested after being pulled over and breathalysed by police while driving her mother home following an afternoon out, according to The Sun.

Reports suggest that Knox later arrived at Knutsford Police Station in Cheshire wanting to speak to officers about her daughter, but was then arrested herself after police suspected that she had driven there while under the influence of alcohol.

Ashcroft was charged for allegedly being nearly three times over the legal limit and will appear in court on April 2. Knox was bailed pending further enquiries.

A Cheshire police spokesperson said: "Police stopped a car in Hollow Lane in Knutsford. A 56-year-old woman from Gloucestershire was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

"An 80-year-old woman from Knutsford later arrived at Knutsford Police Station and was also arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and bailed."

A Coronation Street spokesperson declined to comment, saying: "This is a personal and private matter."

Coronation Street fans now have the opportunity to get married in the Rovers Return, after the soap's former set was granted a wedding licence.

The ITV soap's former base at Quay Street in Manchester city centre opened to the public as a visitor attraction in April.

The indoor studio, which houses the interior for sets such as the Rovers Return, the factory and the Platt and Duckworth houses, has now been given permission to host wedding ceremonies.

Andy Begg, general manager of Coronation Street: The Tour, said that the venue is "a real must for any die-hard Corrie fan wanting to tie the knot in style".

He told BBC News: "We are currently in the process of working out what packages can be made available, but rest assured, you can guarantee the Rovers will play a big part.

"Weddings will be available on weekday evenings during school term time, when guided tours do not happen".

Coronation Street filmed its last scenes at Quay Street in December last year, and made the move to MediaCity in January following the show's Christmas production break.

Coronation Street bosses have denied tabloid rumours of an upcoming role for Julie Walters.

A report in the Sunday Mirror today (June 29) claims that the show's producers are currently working on creating a part for the BAFTA-winning actress.

Walters has often been linked to Coronation Street over the years, but Digital Spy can confirm that there are no current plans for her to make an appearance in the show.

A Corrie spokesperson told DS this morning: "Julie is a fantastic actress, so it would be great to have her on board in the future if the right role came up and if she had time in her busy work schedule. However, there are no plans at the moment for her to join the show."

Coronation Street has been criticised for its restorative justice storyline involving Gail McIntyre and newcomer Michael Rodwell.

Viewers know that Michael, played by Les Dennis, broke into Gail's home earlier this year. However, Gail has since forgiven Michael for his crimes when they came face-to-face again as part of the restorative justice storyline.

The plot has now faced a backlash from real-life restorative justice organisers, with The Sun claiming that it has affected a case where a thief was due to apologise to her victim.

After the victim reportedly saw an episode of the soap where Michael meets Gail in jail, she pulled out of doing the same, saying she was "too scared".

Tony Lloyd, Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester, said: "Coronation Street has done a fantastic job of raising important issues and bringing them to the public's attention. Unfortunately, on this one they have got it wrong."

The pair have reportedly yet to decide on a name for their son.

O'Brien also has a 5-year-old daughter named Scarlett Jacqueline Thomas, whom she had with Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas.

Earlier this year, the actress - who has also had roles in Doctors and Waterloo Road - said that she'd love to return to Coronation Street.

O'Brien left the soap in 2007 after playing Sarah-Louise Platt since 1999. She was famously at the centre of a teen pregnancy storyline, and was last seen flying to Milan with her daughter Bethany after admitting to planting drugs on her brother David.

Latest news from Clacton...Every year for the last few years the "big" pantomime in Clacton has starred a former Corrie or EE star. While they're in town they are usually asked to ceremonially turn on the town's Christmas lights, which they are always happy to do as a) It gives them a chance to meet their fans and b) It's good publicity both for them and the pantomime.

This year the star is Charlie Condou. He has absolutely refused to turn the lights on, citing the fact that it is not written in to his contract that he should do this!

Coronation Street has temporarily taken on four new recruits in an attempt to make its writing team more diverse.

The new writers were selected as part of the Original Voices scheme, which aims to find unique talent from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds living in the North West.

Each of the writers will be joining the team in the New Year for a 10-week paid internship, which could lead to a permanent position.

They will join the Story Department and begin working on several Coronation Street plots, while learning about the show from the inside.

After being given four weeks to write a trial script, they will be considered for possible progression to the writing team.

Coronation Street launched Original Voices over the autumn as a joint collaboration with Creative Skillset.

Original Voices was first launched on Emmerdale in 2012 in order to connect with local BAME writing talent.

An online petition to save the former Coronation Street set has been launched.

The set had been used to film the ITV soap opera for more than three decades.

It has been due for demolition since Allied London bought the site in an agreement with the Manchester City Council. Flats, shops and offices are planned for construction on the site.

The site had been used from 1982 until January of last year, when the ITV soap moved to MediaCity UK at Salford.

Juliet Cusimano, who is championing the restoration effort, wrote in her petition: "At the moment when you walk down the cobbled street past the Rovers Return or go inside the pub interior, you're having the unique experience of walking where Ena Sharples, Annie Walker, Bet Lynch, Hilda and Stan Ogden, Vera and Jack Duckworth, Elsie Tanner, Alf Roberts and many other famous and much-loved characters have walked before you.

"You'll never have this experience at the new set in Salford because these characters or the actors who played them have retired or died."

Application for listed status for the set was rejected in 2012.

Coronation Street star Barbara Knox has appeared in court to face her drink-driving charge.

The actress pleaded guilty to the charge at Crewe magistrates court this morning (January 23), and has been handed a fine and a 12-month driving ban.

Coronation Street actress Barbara Knox leaves Macclesfield Magistrates' Court, with her solicitor Nick Freeman (right), following her appearance in court accused of drink driving.
Picture date: Thursday April 24, 2014. Knox - who plays the role of Rita Tanner in the ITV soap - was charged following an incident in Knutsford, Cheshire, on March 10. See PA story COURTS Knox. Photo credit should read: Peter Byrne/PA Wire

She previously denied that she committed the offence, but chose to change her plea at today's hearing, which comes more than ten months after she was arrested in Cheshire last March.

The 81-year-old - who must pay a fine of £3,000 - was told by the judge that her ban would almost be over had she admitted to the offence from the outset.

She was held by police shortly after her daughter, 56-year-old Maxine Ashcroft, had been arrested for the same offence.

Ashcroft was found to be three times over the legal limit, and was banned from driving for two years last year.

The prosecution has alleged that the soap star arrived at Middlewich police station to check on her daughter after her arrest, and was advised not to drive as she appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

She chose to drive home, but was stopped by police for a breathalyser test before being taken into custody herself.

However, after Blackburn's agent approached them about the idea, show chiefs declined the offer.

Speaking to The Sun, Blackburn said: "I love Coronation Street. I've watched practically every episode - I think I'm their biggest fan.

"I've only got one ambition and it's to be on it, to be in the Rovers Return. My agent tried to get me on it... but they wouldn't do it. I don't understand why because they've done it with a few celebrities."

Blackburn insisted that the incident hasn't put him off watching the show, saying: "I love to record seven or eight, then have a day when I just watch that. It's beautifully written. I don't like EastEnders, I find it a bit depressing."

Two former Coronation Street stars have landed lead roles in a theatre production of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.

Chris Gascoyne and Vicky Entwistle will star in the production at the Birmingham Rep for a short run in May.

The Jim Cartwright-penned play follows painfully shy Little Voice, who spends hours listening to her late father's old record collection.

When her loud mother Mari starts dating a talent agent, Ray Say, they both think Little Voice is their ticket to fame and fortune.

Entwistle will be playing Mari and Gascoyne has been cast as Ray Say.

Nancy Sullivan has the lead role in the production, which also features Joanna Brookes, Brendan Charleson and Tendayi Jembere.

Director James Brining said: "I can't wait to explore this in the rehearsal room with a great company of actors. Nancy has an incredible voice that can transport you and Vicky and Chris have an intuitive understanding of Mari and Ray. I'm looking forward to getting started."

A film adaptation of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice was released in 1998, starring Jane Horrocks, Brenda Blethyn, Michael Caine, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent.

Sue Cleaver as Eileen Grimshaw

Speaking to Soaplife, she said: "I have it constantly - once a week. I've learned so much about myself by doing it, and it really has changed my life.

"It has given me complete understanding of certain behaviour - why we react in the way we do. It can't help but affect every relationship in your life. I get excited about having therapy each week. It's a bit like going to the gym, but for your mind.

"I've always been fascinated by the good it can do. Personally, I think it should be mandatory. It's a great confidence builder. I am qualified to take clients and have another 18 months to go before I can finish my four-year course in Analysis Psychotherapy at the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy. It's hard work fitting it in with Corrie, but I love it."

Cleaver also added that her Coronation Street fame does not impact her sessions with clients.

She said: "It is maybe a bit weird for them at first, but once we start talking, they forget all about it. The novelty wears off.

"The people come to see me when they have something they want to talk about and when they have a problem. That is what they are concerned about, not who I am."

Corrie boss Stuart Blackburn has revealed he would love to pinch Cain Dingle from rival soap Emmerdale.
The executive producer, who used to be the boss at Emmerdale, thinks Jeff Hordley is superb as the village villain.
And he has also confessed how he would also like to see Edna Birch on the cobbles too.
Asked if he could steal any characters from another soap, Stuart said: "I’m going to be greedy and take two characters from Emmerdale.
"I know I’m biased because I used to work there, but I’d steal Edna Birch and Cain Dingle.
"I think Edna is the ’holy grail’ when it comes to older soap women with a sharp tongue who you just love.
"Shirley Stelfox brings heart and depth to her, but she can be as cutting as hell."
He added: "With Cain it’s completely obvious - he’s a real, tortured human being, and a brilliant soap villain.
"Jeff Hordley is really nice in real life, as well. Astonishingly attractive, talented and a really nice person - so I hate him!":D

Former Coronation Street star Sherrie Hewson is currently eyeing a Weatherfield comeback, and has a rather interesting idea for her character Maureen Naylor.

The actress, who appeared in the show from 1993 to 1997, before returning briefly in 2006, thinks that Maureen could join the queue for Ken Barlow's affections.

Ken is currently at the centre of a love triangle, having found himself in a relationship with Nessa Warner while unaware that his close friend Audrey Roberts has feelings for him.

Discussing the possibility of a return to the soap, Hewson told The Sun: "I loved Maureen. I never thought she finished her story.

"Now if she went back I'd put her with Bill Roache. He's not a comedy character but he's dry; he was great with Raquel.

"If ever Maureen came back that would be a really good match." :D

Mikey North has given us an insight into his wedding day.

The Coronation Street star tied the knot with Rachael Isherwood on January 29 and in an interview with this week's OK! magazine, North revealed he struggled to keep his emotions in check.

"Rachael looked amazing. I'm known for letting my emotions run away with me, so I was really concentrating on trying not to cry," he explained of the big day, which took place at Curradine Barns in Shrawley, Worcestershire in front of over 100 guests.

North added that his stag dos were quiet affairs - well, apart from an encounter in Prague on a weekend away with ten friends.

"I did end up getting spanked by a stripper/dancer with my own belt," he recalled. "She pulled my pants down in front of half of the Czech Republic and I had strap marks all over my rear end!"

The actor popped the question to Rachael last year during a romantic break in the Lake District. They met in a Manchester bar three years ago.

Coronation Street is amongst the shows aiming to tackle obesity on-screen, as broadcasters attempt to halt a government ban on junk food advertising before 9pm.

ITV could remove scenes of unhealthy living and instead increase the amount of fruit and vegetables featured in shows in a bid to placate the Government's planned childhood obesity strategy, The Telegraph reports.

If the proposed ban on junk food advertising goes through, it's predicted that broadcasters could lose up to £200m a year.

Downing Street's plans also include cutting down on scenes that promote an unhealthy lifestyle and commissioning programmes warning of the effects of bad diets.

Junk food advertising is already banned on children's channels and in breaks between children's programmes.

However, under new plans, general entertainment shows could be affected too.

While most of the ITV's major talent shows would be affected, The X Factor would be exempt from the ban as under-16s don't make up a large enough percentage of the audience.

An ITV spokesman said: "ITV takes its responsibilities in this area very seriously and we go further than we are required to do in restricting HFSS advertising online as well as working actively to promote healthy lifestyles on screen."

Former Coronation Street star Bruce Jones had an unexpected reunion with the soap yesterday - but don't get too excited, as he's not returning to his role as Les Battersby.

The ITV soap is filming scenes in Blackpool this week, but eyebrows were raised when Jones was pictured on the North Pier - exactly the same spot where the crew had been shooting.

While the rumour mill quickly went into overdrive with talk of a shock comeback for Les, it turns out that Jones was only in Blackpool as he's been appearing in an Easter panto there.

Jones did spend a few minutes chatting with the team, but a Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed to Digital Spy that Les is not coming back.

The 63-year-old, who played layabout Les for ten years between 1997 and 2007, has been starring as Fleshcreep in a production of Jack and the Beanstalk at the North Pier Theatre.

Last year, a petition was launched for Les's return after Jones admitted that he'd fallen on hard times and was keen to reprise his role.

Speaking on Channel 5's Celebs on Benefits: Fame to Claim, he commented: "I know there is still room for Les on the show somewhere. It would be nice to go back and relive those days. I'd like to be part of the team again. I miss them. I worked there for a long time.

"I still watch Coronation Street whenever it's on. I've always watched it. It's a huge part of my life. My heart will always be with Coronation Street."

Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has opened up about his sexuality, saying he 'hated himself for being gay' when he was younger.

The actor, who plays Billy Mayhew on the soap, spoke about coming out at 15 in a candid interview with Gay Times.

"I always knew I was different from the other boys I hung around with, but couldn't ever work out what it was," Daniel said.

"I was 12-years-old the first time I actually realised that I was gay. Back then there was no internet, very few gay people on TV or in the media, and we weren't taught about homosexuality in school due to Section 28 - so for a while I thought I might be the only person out there who felt like that. I hated myself for it and hoped it was a phase."

"It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once. To feel free to say the words 'I'm gay' out loud was one of the hardest yet most natural things in the world. Now I wouldn't change it for the world. I love who I am."

Coronation Street star Colson Smith has lost three and a half stone after hitting the gym
Coronation Street star Colson Smith is on a body transformation plan and has shed three and a half stone in weight.
Colson, who plays kind-hearted teenager Craig Tinker, is the latest in a long-line of Corrie stars to join Ultimate Performance Fitness gym in Manchester - and he’s enjoying the results of his hard work after losing 50lbs.
Colson, who joined the soap in 2012 with his mum Beth and pet rat Darryl, says he “feels like an athlete” after joining UP Fitness, based in the old Granada Studios.
Speaking on the ITV chat show Weekend, he told host Aled Jones that he started working out because he was bored after leaving college. And he decided to continue with the workouts after discovering that his character wants to join the police.
He said: “I feel like an athlete. Everything is monitored. My diet is monitored.”
Colson says he regulary bumps into his Coronation Street castmates at UP, a favourite with Catherine Tyldesley and Katie McGlynn, who play Eva Price and Sinead Tinker.
He laughed: “When I go to the gym in Manchester there’s already two of them in there.”
The gym also helped to transform former Corrie star Ryan Thomas, who played Jason Grimshaw, his Emmerdale actor brother Adam and Adam’s Love Island star twin Scott.
Colson, whose character Craig supported his pal Faye Windass through her underage pregnancy, says we will soon see “a different side” to Craig as he and his mum Beth disagree over his decision to join the police.
He told Aled that Craig wants to become a policeman after seeing tragic Kylie Platt stabbed in front of him on the cobbles.
Explaining that her shocking death was a “turning point” for Craig, he said: “The street knew he stood there and did nothing.”
Colson recently celebrated his 18th birthday at Hotel Football in Trafford with guests including co-stars Brooke Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster, and Lucy Fallon who plays Bethany Platt.

The star, who plays Michelle Connor on the ITV soap, was previously reported to have shown doubts about coming back after her contract finished.

However, in response she wrote on Twitter: "For the record I have NOT said that I am thinking of leaving @itvcorrie ridiculous sensationalised headlines as usual!!" :crying:

Marsh originally told the Daily Star of signing a new contract: "It's always something that when you are at the end of a contract, you are thinking, 'Are they going to want me to stay? What do I do?'

"That's always something that people think. Having been on the show for 10 years, you do sit there and go, 'Would I want to? Would I like to?'"

A few months ago, Marsh revealed she had no plans to quit Corrie, confirming she was "not going anywhere just yet".

"It's something that everyone toys with now and again, but it isn't something borne out of other people's decisions. It would be a mistake to leave prompted by someone else," Marsh said.

"This is an amazing job - I'm in a very lucky position and in a great role and, you know, it's not as easy as it seems out there. So to leave something so stable and say, 'I'm off!' isn't for me. It sounds cliched, but it's like a family."

Coronation Street is the most-complained-about soap of the past year – with 1,204 complaints
Coronation Street may be gripping viewers most nights of the week, but it's also the most-complained-about soap.
Viewers sent complaints about Corrie to Ofcom more times in the 12-month period ending March 2017 than any of its rival soaps, including EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.
In total, the cobbles attracted 1,204 complaints (up from 154 during the previous year) – although this has been skewed slightly by the fact that a large percentage (around 40%) came from one single episode – 473 over Eva Price's racially-insensitive "more roots than Kunta Kinte" comment.
"I have more roots than Kunta Kinte," she said back in August 2016, venting her frustration about her hair at Audrey Roberts's salon. "No idea who that is, by the way, just something my mum used to say."
Despite the controversy, Ofcom did clear the comment, saying that it "reflected the foolishness, and lack of sensitivity and cultural awareness, of her character".
"For her to speak in this thoughtless fashion without understanding what she was referring to, or that it might cause offence, was likely to have been consistent with the audience's expectations of her character," the report added.
Meanwhile, Emmerdale had 789 complaints in the last year (up from 433) and EastEnders had 335 (down from 348).
Despite all the murdering and huge storylines going on in Hollyoaks, the Channel 4 soap only had 26 complaints (down from 41).

Coronation Street stars’ salaries ‘revealed’ with Kym Marsh netting £150k a year to play Michelle Connor and David Platt star Jack P. Shepherd on £200k
The salaries of some of Coronation Street’s biggest stars have been ‘revealed’.
Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor, is reported to rake in £150,000 a year while her co-star Jack P Shepherd is said to earn a tidy sum.
As we revealed, Jack, 28, gets £200,000 a year to play loveable rogue David Platt.
Sources close to the ITV soap claimed the deal would make Jack one of the first “new breed” younger artists on Corrie to break the £200,000 year salary bracket.
But he’s not the only long-running star who’s been rewarded with a mega-bucks deal by the show.
In January Michael Le Vell was reported to have been handed a £170,000 salary deal to stay on the cobbles for another year.
The actor, who plays Kevin Webster, was said to have been given a £20,000 pay rise to boost his earnings.
And his on-screen daughter Rosie Webster (played by Helen Flanagan) is well paid for her work
Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, and Helen Flanagan are thought to earn a little less than their Wetherfield co-stars but it seems they won’t be worrying about paying their bills on time.
Simon – who’s been on the soap since 1989 – is thought to earn around £150,000 after signing a new contract in 2016.
Helen meanwhile was initially offered £30,000 for three months work when she reprised her role as Rosie Webster.
But after fans of the soap welcomed her back with open arms, she was asked to stay on and it’s claimed she’s now on a salary of around £120,000 a year.
Soap veterans William Roache and Barbara Knox are top of the pile however, with both reported to be in the £200,000 salary bracket.
William, who plays Ken Barlow, has been on the show since it started in 1960, with Barbara (Rita Tanner) joining him four years later in 1964.
The revelation about their salaries comes after a new report claimed Danny Dyer earns almost £100,000 a year more than his EastEnders castmate Steve McFadden.
The Mick Carter actor, 39, was revealed to be earning £400,000 at the end of last year, and now the earnings of other BBC soap stars have emerged.
Steve McFadden, who plays boozer Phil Mitchell, is said to be earning £310,000 according to the Daily Star.
In December, The Sun revealed that June Brown, who plays the long-suffering launderette lady, was in talks to remain on the show until at least March 2018.
If she took bosses up on their offer, the 90-year-old could expect to receive £300,000.
Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale, is said to take home over £260,000.

Anne Nolan could be looking to swap her singing career for a role on the cobbles.

http://digitalspyuk.cdnds.net/17/24/980x490/landscape-1497788624-an.jpg

According to the Sunday Mirror, the 66-year-old Nolan sister is already in talks with Coronation Street bosses and has even recently done a script reading for the soap, so it could be likely that Anne will soon be following in her late soap star sister Bernie's footsteps.

While Anne is better known for her music career, following her time in The Nolans with a solo singing career that saw her debut album Just One Voice released in 2011, Bernie got stuck into roles in Brookside and The Bill before she passed away from breast cancer in 2013.

"I've been a huge fan of Coronation Street since 1960," Anne said in a statement to The Mirror.

"It's such a big part of people's lives so I was delighted to be asked to do a reading for the soap, I was thrilled and very excited to have been asked."

"If a suitable role came up, I would jump at the opportunity. Who wouldn't? To be part of such an iconic production would be fabulous."

A spokesman for the soap also added that they'd seen Anne for a reading, but added that she didn't audition for any role in particular.

"As regularly happens when casting a serial drama like Coronation Street, actors come in for readings with no specific character in mind," the statement read. "Anne Nolan has been in to read for us but wasn't seen for a particular role."

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has hinted that he'll be involved in the soap's upcoming crossover with Emmerdale.

The actor, who plays David Platt, teased the special episode while catching up with us on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards.

Fans are eagerly awaiting cast and storyline details after ITV recently announced that Corrie and Emmerdale will join forces for an hour-long special, due to air in January.

The episode will feature characters from both soaps, who become embroiled in "an ambitious stunt" which has "everlasting consequences for everyone involved".

When we asked Jack if he'll be involved, he confidently replied: "Yes!"

His co-star Ben Price, who plays David's brother Nick Tilsley, quickly interjected: "Are you meant to say that?"

Jack admitted: "I don't know!"

After Ben wisely advised that it wasn't a good idea to give any details away, Jack then replied: "I don't know if I am. Not for a fact, I don't.

"The big key hitters, I think they might have been told. There's rumours ? and I'm sniffing that I might be in the periphery."

He then laughed: "With my Yorkshire accent. I think I'm in it, talking Yorkshire and they're like: 'Where are you from? Are you from Bradford?'"

Jack expressed hope that he could share some screen time with Emmerdale's Dominic Brunt (Paddy Dingle), who recently shared his ambition to be in the episode.

Jack said: "Maybe I'll take David the dog. I'll take David the dog to the vets. Paddy could help me out, that'd be good ? Dominic!"

Corrie and Emmerdale's crossover marks the beginning of a new 8pm 'power hour' for the ITV soaps from next year. Both shows will switch to airing every weeknight from 8pm, screening five 30-minute episodes per week.
