Coronation Street's 50th anniversary appeal raised over £150,000 for charity, the soap has announced today.

As the show reached its milestone birthday last year, bosses and cast members launched a series of fundraising events to bring in cash for Cancer Research UK, the NSPCC and The Christie cancer centre in Manchester.

Coronation Street has now donated £50,000 to each of the charities, which were chosen by the cast in a democratic vote last year.

Initiatives used to raise funds included a charity auction and gala dinner.

Coronation Street's executive producer Kieran Roberts commented: "We're delighted fundraising initiated by the Coronation Street cast during the 50th anniversary year has generated £50,000 for each of the charities.

"We felt raising money for charities during the anniversary year would be a tangible way of celebrating Coronation Street's heritage."

Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has suffered a panic attack on set.

The 21-year-old actress, who plays Rosie Webster in the long-running soap, reportedly sparked fears for her health when she stopped mid-scene, hyperventilated and clutched at her chest. Production staff later took her to her dressing room to calm down and be given the all-clear by medical personnel.

An industry insider told the Daily Star: "It was very distressing for everyone to watch. She's a young, bubbly girl and was in a right state. It came on all of a sudden. It was very scary for Helen and for everyone else in the studio."

Flanagan apparently admitted to Coronation Street bosses that she has experienced a few panic attacks in the last few weeks, but does not know the cause.

A spokesperson for Coronation Street said last night: "Helen has experienced a number of panic attacks recently. It is something she is trying to deal with to move forward."

Flanagan, who is currently dating Swansea City footballer Scott Sinclair, recently said of her colleagues: "I love the people at my work. So many people here are understanding and make me laugh. I'm very lucky."

Flanagan was recently given her own online spin-off show called Just Rosie, which follow her as she tries to reach her career dream of being a fashion model.

The Coronation Street actress who plays Emily Bishop set herself alight during filming earlier this week.

Eileen Derbyshire, who received an MBE last year after 50 years in the ITV soap, was shooting a scene for special Bonfire Night episodes when she got too close to a candle and set the arm of her shawl on fire.

The production team had to run on set and spray her with a fire extinguisher and the 80-year-old was then taken to her dressing room to receive treatment from a doctor.

One source told The Mirror: "It was a scary moment for Eileen. She got too close to the tea-light candle and her clothes went up in flames. She was lucky someone on the crew acted so quickly. Thankfully, she didn't get burned but the costume was ruined so the scene had to be completely reshot.

"It was hardly the biggest scene for November 5. There are others which have fires and fireworks in them so it's amazing this one caused such a problem."

The incident reportedly resulted in filming being called off for most of the afternoon, but Derbyshire has recovered and is now back at work.

A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed the fire last night but added: "It was a minor incident and no one was in serious danger at any time."

Coronation Street star Alison King has reportedly become engaged to her boyfriend.

Sound technician Adam Huckett proposed to the actress in Paris and she immediately said yes, according to The People.

A friend said: "She is over the moon. They've been together three years and Alison is sure Adam's the one for her. They're very much in love."

The couple, who met in 2007, have a daughter together - 2-year-old Daisy.

Another source added: "Adam's a brilliant dad to Daisy. They are very happy, loving parents and this engagement is the icing on the cake for Alison."

King recently admitted that Carla's dramatic storylines have left her "physically and mentally exhausted".

Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has said that she hopes to discover what triggers her panic attacks so that she can begin trying to deal with them.

The actress, who plays Rosie Webster, confirmed reports that she recently suffered one of the attacks while filming the ITV1 soap. Writing on Twitter, she said that she was "getting them under control".

Flanagan, 21, told The Mirror: "I have recently suffered a few panic attacks. And as anyone who has ever suffered from them knows, they are very scary.

"I did have one at work and everyone was very understanding but I didn't know what might have caused it. I am speaking to people like Kym Marsh (Michelle Connor) who has said that in the past she suffered from them too."

Flanagan continued: "I am trying to work out what triggers them so that I can start to deal with them and move forward. But I am starting to realise that they are more common than people think and that there are ways of dealing with them."

Rosie Webster takes centre stage in a new online Coronation Street spinoff, which follows her attempts at launching a modelling career in London.

Coronation Street's recent rape storyline has helped influence real life victims to call the helpline Rape Crisis.

The helpline has reported an 800% increase in calls since the storyline aired, in which businessman Frank Foster (Andrew Lancel) raped his fiancée Carla Connor (Alison King) on the eve of their wedding, after she attempted to call it off.

Rape Crisis have had to employ more volunteers to take the extra amount of calls, and have praised the episode, which was aired pre-watershed.

Rosa Knight, Helpline Coordinator at Rape Crisis South London said: "Though other programmes have run similar storylines, the response for the Coronation Street storyline has been like nothing we've experienced before.

"It is so important for mainstream shows to tackle these important issues in a well-researched way and it appears the programme makers worked hard to do just that."

Rape victim Sarah Scott also praised the storyline, telling The Sun: "Most rapists are people the victims know and I think it is important for women to realise this. That's why Carla's story is so realistic. I think it's vital that women watch scenes like this on TV to remind them that, sadly, rape is not unusual.

"Even though it doesn't make easy viewing, I think it is vital for soaps such as Coronation Street to tackle these hard-hitting storylines. I believe the agony we saw Carla suffering will help other women realise it is not their fault and they must report it and seek counselling."

Kym Marsh recently praised Lancel for his portrayal as Foster during the storyline.

Michelle Keegan has said that she and fiancé Max George have no time to plan their wedding.

The couple, who began dating last December, became engaged earlier in the summer when The Wanted star proposed on set of the ITV1 soap.

However, the Coronation Street actress told The Mirror that their busy schedules meant that they had not had time to discuss their plans.

"I've been busy with work and he's been touring so we haven't even sat down and spoke about it yet," Keegan admitted.

"He's been away a lot recently, Australia, Singapore, Denmark. He comes home for one night here and there. I should have gone to Madrid this week, but I couldn't go because of work."

Keegan, who was named 'Sexiest Female' at the Inside Soap Awards earlier this week, said that she and George keep in touch online.

"We Skype though, and he knows I work and I know he works. It works, it's fine," the 24-year-old added.

Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan has claimed that she cannot understand her sex symbol status.

The 24-year-old, who plays Rovers Return barmaid Tina McIntyre, said that she was surprised to be named 'Sexiest Female' at the Inside Soap Awards this week.

Keegan further explained that she considered her fiancé, The Wanted singer Max George, to be easier on the eyes.

"Max is very proud that I won this award but he's a lot sexier than I am," she told The Mirror. "My friends and my mum laugh at me because I am the most un-sexy person in the world. I go to Tesco in my PJs."

Keegan added that her commitment to Coronation Street had prevented her and George from planning their wedding.

"I've been working non-stop," she said. "And the *engagement was a shock - I haven't thought past it."

Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has denied a report claiming that she had a panic attack in a coffee shop.

Yesterday, the 21-year-old admitted that she left her local Costa after becoming paranoid about people "staring" at her.

She explained in a series of tweets: "Just went to costa for brunch. Never again on my own. I walked in and these two girls burst out laughing and started talking about me and I felt people were staring at me. It gets me really flustered and when I make my order I feel like all eyes are on me.

"I know I am an actress but I'm very strange sometimes I can be really shy. I sat down with my food and coffee and ended up leaving early as I felt like I was on show. It was just horrible. Now back in my sanctuary Lol.

"And before I get people messaging me saying who do you think you are thinking everyone staring at you I dont mean it to sound like that at all. I really should care less what people think of me and just get on with my thing I'm going to work on that one."

However, earlier today, The Mirror alleged the Rosie Webster actress had a "panic attack" in the shop.

She has since written on Twitter: "By the way I did not have a panic attack in costa yesterday thanks the daily mirror for making me sound like a loon. Lol hahahahahahahha x"

Michelle Keegan has said that she would consider posing for Playboy if she was asked.

The Coronation Street actress told Heat that she would never pose fully naked for the publication.

"Playboy's a good thing to do," Keegan said.

"If it was tastefully done and I didn't have all my bits and bobs out, I would probably think about it, because it's Playboy. But I wouldn't just get totally naked."

Keegan was speaking at last week's Inside Soap Awards, where she had been named the 'Sexiest Female'.

Antony Cotton has become a patron for a charity that supports ex-battery hens.

The Coronation Street actor revealed that he is "besotted" with the birds, and that he began adopting them last year.

The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) has 25 regional centres around the UK, and takes in hens from farmers at the end of their laying life. The hens are then put up for 'adoption' to members of the public.

Cotton revealed that it was an easy decision to become a patron for the charity.

"The British Hen Welfare Trust does an amazing job, not only re-homing ex-battery hens but also campaigning to encourage consumers and retailers to go free range," he said.

"Hen-keeping is one of life's simple pleasures and I'm particularly happy to be able to give ex-battery hens that have had such a dreadful life a happy retirement."

Jamie Oliver and Antony Worrall Thompson are among other celebrities who have supported the cause.

Antony Cotton recently signed a deal that will keep him with the ITV soap until at least 2013.

Coronation Street bosses have been forced to make more changes to the soap's filming schedule after Simon Gregson and Craig Charles were unable to shoot scenes due to illness.

Gregson, who plays Rovers Return boss Steve McDonald, was sent home by the show's doctor yesterday morning, The Mirror reports. He later joked to reporters outside his home that he was suffering from "man-flu" and showed a prescription for antibiotics.

Charles - Lloyd Mullaney on the programme - was also absent from set yesterday after his wife called in at 7.30am to explain that he had been unwell all weekend and could not attend work.

A show spokesperson confirmed that bosses had been forced to do "a bit of juggling" due to cast absences.

Coronation Street star Charlie Condou helped to break a world record last week while out shopping for a book in London.

The actor, who plays Marcus Dent on the ITV1 soap, took part in a reading relay organised by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) as he paid a visit to Waterstone's in Piccadilly on Thursday morning.

Condou only intended to purchase a book but, after hearing details of the event being held inside, he agreed to get involved and later walked out as part of a successful Guinness World Records team.

The relay saw a grand total of 317 people reading aloud - one sentence at a time - from an exclusive Anthony Horowitz story called Double Eagle Has Landed, which has never been published in the UK.

Many blind and partially sighted people took part, reading Braille and giant print. The record attempt marked the launch of Read for RNIB Day, which raises awareness of reading services for blind and partially sighted people.

The event beat the previous Guinness World Record, held by Austria for 290 people in a reading relay.

Gaz Deaves, from Guinness World Records, commented: "What's wonderful about this record is the way it has unified people in reading. I was very impressed with how people used giant print and Braille as well as standard print. It was a fantastic achievement, well done RNIB and Waterstone's."

RNIB's chief executive Lesley-Anne Alexander added: "This is a fantastic result, and not only is RNIB now a Guinness World Records holder, it has been great to hold an event which is open to everyone of all levels of sight and reading abilities.

"But we shouldn't forget that just 7% of all books are available in fully accessible formats, so I urge everyone to get involved with Read for RNIB Day, and help us provide more reading solutions for blind and partially sighted people."

Condou returned to his Coronation Street role earlier this year.

 Well done Charlie

"But now we're starting up Radio Republic. We're both very much into our music, so we'll be playing everything from folk to soul and funk and a bit of rock 'n' roll and a bit of everything really.

Coronation Street's John Michie is calling for viewers to follow his example, by sponsoring a child living in drought-hit East Africa.

The 54-year-old soap star - who plays Stella's jack-the-lad partner Karl Munro - was born in Kenya and spent his childhood there, and has sponsored kids in Kenya for 25 years through children's charity Plan UK.

John said: "Having grown up in Kenya, I feel a strong connection with the country.

"Sponsoring 17-year-old Mbinya through Plan helps me develop the connection and gives me more of an understanding of life for people in her community.

"I particularly value the focus on education and the child-centred approach to helping children make the most of their opportunities and understand their rights.

"That's why I'm backing Plan's Emergency Sponsorship Appeal for people to support children in Kenya who have been affected by the drought."

The charity is appealing for 500 new sponsors to come forward and help a child who has been affected by the drought. Kenya has been hit by worst drought in the region for 60 years. Money donated to Plan through sponsorship funds projects for the benefit of entire communities, like school meals and health clinics.

Coronation Street will become the UK's first primetime show to include product placement.

A Nationwide cashpoint has replaced the currently-unbranded machine outside Dev Alahan's corner shop, which viewers will begin to notice in two weeks' time, The Guardian reports.

Gary Knight, the commercial content director at ITV, said in a statement: "Editorial integrity remains at the heart of what we do as we continue to talk our clients about a number of product placement opportunities, spanning a range of programmes and channels."

Product placement, which is common on US TV shows such as American Idol, was greenlit by UK television governing body Ofcom in December 2010.

Nestlé's Dolce Gusto coffee became the first paid-for product on British television in February this year when it appeared on ITV1's daytime show This Morning as part of a £100,000 deal.

Coronation Street star Samia Smith has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband Matt.

The actress, who plays Maria Connor in the ITV1 soap, split from the property developer in January after five years of marriage.

She has cited his \"unreasonable behaviour\" as grounds for ending the marriage, the Sunday Mirror reports.

She has since begun dating her Coronation Street co-star Will Thorp (Chris Gray), while Matt has been spotted with model Hayley Goodhead.

Speaking in January of Samia's new relationship, Matt said: \"They have to live with what they've done. She's my wife. I love her and we've got a child. I'm just trying to get on with my life.\"

The former couple have a 19-month-old daughter together named Freya.

CORRIE beauty Samia Smith was single again yesterday after her divorce was finalised. The 29-year-old split from Matthew Smith, 34, earlier this year.

Samia revealed yesterday it has been granted — and she has reverted to her maiden name, Ghadie.

The actress, Maria Connor in the ITV1 soap, said in an online message: "So, I've got a new surprise name everyone... it's my old one... X :)"

The actress, who has a two-year-old daughter, has been dating co-star Will Thorp — who plays bad boy Chris Gray — since splitting with property developer Smith.

Earlier yesterday she told fans: "Morning! The gorgeous Will Thorp is on the Lorraine show later talking about the Chris/Cheryl/Lloyd storyline... just so ya know! X".

Thorp, 34, has split with wife Samantha, who is mother to his two children.

A source close to Collinson told the paper: "He's aware that Sarah-Lou and Candice were hugely popular characters. He thinks it would be a ratings winner to bring them back. Losing Katherine and Helen is a big blow to the show so Phil wants to beef things up a bit with the return of a couple of big names.

"He hasn't even spoken to them about returning yet because he wants to go in armed with a big deal that they can't say no to.

"Luckily, ITV have every faith in him and have handed him an open cheque book to lure whoever he thinks will be good for the show."

Sanderson left Coronation Street in 2005, while O'Brien last appeared in the soap in 2007.

Flanagan confirmed her exit from the Street last month and Kelly already has a theatre role in She Stoops To Conquer lined up for when she leaves.

Most people have freckles and moles on their skin and most people have heard warnings to check them if they've noticed any changes. But most people also don't bother and some people end up with skin cancer, aka melanoma.

Last summer, according to the Mail Online, ITV received an email for Sue Nicholls warning her that a mole the fan spotted on Sue's arm looked odd to them. Sue, who plays Audrey Roberts on Coronation Street, was contacted by the health office at the studio and was informed of the email and that maybe she should have it checked as a precaution. Even then, Sue thought it was just someone overly worried. It was a mole she'd had for years and didn't think it had changed but she had it checked anyway. The doctor thought it was worth keeping an eye on and when she returned for a follow up, earlier this year, it had indeed changed size.

Following on with that, Sue had the mole removed and tests later proved it was in the early stages of skin cancer. Sue admits that she used to spend lots of time tanning in her younger years before anyone knew of the danger and is very grateful now for this warning. The person that sent the email didn't sign their name so she doesn't know who to thank. If it had been left longer, she could have been looking at more invasive chemotherapy treatment as well.

Hollyoaks star Stephanie Davis thinks she'd be good cast as Tina McIntyre's sister in Coronation Street.
The brunette plays troubled Sinead O'Connor in the Chester-based soap and despite previously auditioning for the role of Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz, believes TV is where her future lies.
She told Inside Soap: "I loved Zoe Slater in EastEnders so it would have been nice to play her - or Tina McIntyre from Coronation Street. She's quite like Sinead, and I think I could play Tina's sister - we look a bit like each other."
Sinead has had her fair share of drama since joining Hollyoaks last year and though Stephanie loves playing the mischievous teen she isn't keen on her racy wardrobe.
She said: "Sometimes I look at her outfits and think, 'That's okay', but other days I think, 'Oh no!'
"She goes for more outlandish stuff than I do - I've recently been filming scenes in a black see-through top with red bra underneath."
The 18-year-old admits that she is more like Sinead when it comes to romance and is a softie for a bad boy. She said: "I like the bad-boy types. It does my head in sometimes, as I wish I could go for the nice boys, but I just never seem to be able to!"

Coronation Street has been named 'Best Continuing Drama' at the 2011 Royal Television Society North West Awards.

The ITV soap beat Channel 4 shows Hollyoaks and Shameless to the title at the November 19 ceremony.

Corrie star Jane Danson also won the 'Best Performance In A Continuing Drama' award for her role as Leanne Barlow, beating Hollyoaks favourites Emmett Scanlan (Brendan Brady) and Claire Cooper (Jacqui McQueen).

The soap notched up a third victory by bagging the 'Best Script Writer' award, which saw Daran Little take home the trophy for BBC drama The Road To Coronation Street.

The one-off special, which told the story of how Corrie made it to air, was produced to mark the programme's 50th anniversary last year and starred David Dawson and Jessie Wallace.

The Road To Coronation Street previously won big at this year's Royal Television Society Programme Awards and the New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards.

CORRIE star Brooke Vincent had to have emergency treatment after her face blew up like a "prawn cracker" when she had an allergic reaction to a skin care product.
19-year-old — who plays lesbian Sophie Webster in the soap — was using the £70 cream to tackle spots.

Brooke dashed to a doctor when she suffered the severe reaction.

She messaged her Twitter fans, saying: "My Face Looks Like A Prawn Cracker!!!!!"

Brooke blamed a junk food diet of McDonald's, KFC and fish and chips — and heavy make-up for work — for her poor skin.

Celebrity nutritionist Jeannette Jackson said: "It's only human to get occasional spots but stage make-up and poor diet are a lethal combination as fats from the food clog pores."

Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw) is reportedly dating ex-Hollyoaks actress Candy McCulloch.

The pair were spotted on a date at an Italian restaurant in Manchester on Thursday and later moved on to Sakura bar, the Daily Star Sunday reports.

A source said: "Candy's been friends with Ryan for a long time but it was never anything more until recently because they've both been in relationships. They went on their first date and got on like a house on fire."

McCulloch previously dated rapper Professor Green but the couple recently split after growing apart.

"Candy's a lovely girl but things with her and Professor Green just weren't working out," the source added. "They both decided it was time to move on.

"When Ryan asked her out on a date she was over the moon and while it's early days it seems like they're both really into each other."

McCulloch recently guest-starred in Coronation Street's online spinoff Just Rosie, playing the arch rival of Jason's girlfriend Rosie Webster.

Coronation Street bosses have invited Tony Blackburn to take a set tour after he expressed a desire to appear on the soap alive or dead.

The veteran DJ yesterday joked that he would be willing to have his body stuffed and put on show on the set of the ITV1 soap.

The 68-year-old has often spoken of how he would like to make a cameo on Coronation Street, but he has yet to put in an appearance on the cobbles.

Blackburn told Monday morning's Daybreak: "I've only got one ambition in life. When I die I want to be stuffed and end up in the Rovers Return. That would be my idea of fun."

Offering an alternative idea, he continued: "I would like to appear on Coronation Street just sitting there having a beer. I've hinted at this for 20 years and never been taken up on it."

Responding to Blackburn's suggestions, a Coronation Street spokesperson told the Daily Star: "We once had a fan from Canada whose last wish was for their ashes to be scattered on the street, so we let their family do that. This is the first time we've ever had a request to put a stuffed body on show.

"I couldn't say whether we would give him a cameo at this stage, but it's always great to know we have celebrity fans. He's welcome to come down to the set and meet people and have a walk around."

Coronation Street continues on Thursday night at 8.30pm on ITV1.

Corrie fans can get a chance to be part of Coronation Street when three classic scripts by Jack Rosenthal are performed in the Lass O’Gowrie pub in Manchester in January 2012.
For the first time ITV has given permission for the scripts from 1968 to be performed live, with the traditional Manchester pub becoming the Rovers Return for two weeks.

Landlord Gareth Kavanagh said: “We are hugely grateful to ITV and Jack’s family for allowing us to stage these episodes and can’t wait for you to see them. These brand new, full cast dramatisations will take place in the ground floor of the Lass, making them a totally immersive and dramatic presentation.”

The first two episodes cover the wedding of Dennis Tanner and Jenny Sutton with a host of well-loved characters such as Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell, Elsie Tanner, Annie and Jack Walker and Albert Tatlock. They will be performed in the main pub with the audience becoming the onset extras. Complementing these two classic slices of Sixties writing is a new adaptation of Coronation Street’s episode 788, which centres on Stan Ogden treating Hilda to a slap-up Chinese meal, which will be performed on the stage upstairs.

They will be performed by a new cast brought together by June West, the Street’s casting director for over 15 years, and directed by theatre stalwart Helen Parry. Rumour has it a few familiar faces have expressed an interest in playing the classic characters!

Episode one will be on Monday (Jan 9th at 6pm, 7.30pm and 9pm), episode two on Tuesday (Jan 10th at 6pm, 7.30pm and 9pm). The standalone Ogdens’ episodes are on Wednesday (Jan 11th at 7.30pm and 9pm) and Thursday (Jan 12th 7.30pm and 9pm). Then on the Sunday the Ogdens is repeated at 4pm, followed by an omnibus edition of the first two episodes of 6pm.

To complete the tribute, the Lass will also be staging Hot Fat, a Jack Rosenthal Play For Today from 1974 that was lost when the tapes were wiped by the BBC. That will be on Friday Jan 13th at 6pm and Sunday 15th at 1pm and explores how friendships and deals are made and broken in a sauna.

Rosenthal is one of the north’s greatest literary sons and author of classics like the BAFTA award-winning Bar Mitzvah Boy, The Evacuees and Spend, Spend, Spend – about the pools winner Viv Nicholson.

There will only be 30 tickets for each intimate performance and tickets will go on sale on December 9, Coronation Street’s 51st anniversary.

Michelle Keegan has given her thumbs up to Cheryl Cole appearing on Coronation Street as her big sister.
The former X Factor judge has revealed she is a huge fan of the ITV1 soap and of Michelle's character Tina McIntyre, and the actress admitted she would "love" it if bosses invited the singer onto the show.
"Oh my God, I would love that! That would be amazing, yeah!" she told Star.
"I've seen her at dos and stuff, I haven't actually gone over and said hello, though."
Michelle said that Tina's single status doesn't last too long: "Tommy Duckworth (Chris Fountain) and Tina are finally getting together in the new year. Their relationship has been a slow-burner and a will-they-won't-they sort of thing.
"It's something the viewers have been waiting for and they do get together in the new year."
The 24-year-old added that her favourite storyline so far has been the tragic passing of screen dad Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale).
"I know it sounds really grim but probably when her dad Joe died. It was a big storyline for me and I worked with numerous characters, and it was a chance to show every emotion possible. I really enjoyed it," she said.

Kevin Kennedy was interviewed on ITV's Breakast show today about bringing Curly Watts back to Coronation Street. Kevin will be starring in the new Corrie musical Street of Dreams as the hapless Curly.

He says he misses playing Curly and misses the people he used to work with at Coronation Street. He talked about shooting a scene as Curly with Racquel when he named the star after her, a wonderful scene that this fan remembers well. Asked if there was a chance he'd be back on the soap, he says: "You never know" and admits it's no secret that he'd love to return. As would we!

Talking about the new musical, Kevin said it'll be a spectacular, amazing stageshow, narrated by Paul O'Grady. It's an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular and advises people to get their tickets asap as they're selling very fast indeed.

Kevin said his children are too young to remember him as Curly on Corrie so they'll be along to see their dad in the new musical show in Manchester.

CORONATION Street stars were furious last night over the prospect of losing a THIRD of their pay.

They were locked in talks with ITV bosses after the broadcaster revealed a money-saving schedule shuffle.

The cast — some of whom have said they'd consider going on strike — received letters just before Christmas saying the Saturday omnibus would be moved from ITV1 as of this weekend.

They are currently paid a repeat fee, which is 37.5 per cent of their episode pay, for appearances in the terrestrial omnibus. But with the show moving to digital spin-off channel ITV2, all the actors would be forced to share a small royalty fee instead.

Cast members earn up to £250,000 a year, depending on length of service and how many storylines they feature in.

Last night the cast members and representatives from their union Equity held talks with ITV bean-counters.

A source told TV Biz: "The stars are not happy and without the stars there is no show.

"They don't feel they deserve a pay cut while the show is at the top of its game.

"If the situation isn't resolved some cast members have indicated they'd be prepared to go on strike." A union insider said: "Equity wants to protect the value of their members' work.

"Now we need to work out how the repeat fee is negotiated when their work is broadcast across different media, be it digital or online."

Last night Coronation Street spokesman Alison Sinclair confirmed discussions had begun.

She told TV Biz: "We are in the process of talking to cast members whose pay may be affected by the ending of the omnibus repeat on ITV1.

"We expect to come to an arrangement in the next few weeks. In the meantime we have confirmed that we will continue with repeat fee payments."

Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley has been warned to stop mentioning her favourite businesses on Twitter, according to a report.

The actress, who plays Weatherfield's Eva Price, was given a reminder by show bosses after offering details of where she visits and shops, The Mirror claims.

Cast at the ITV1 soap are not allowed to endorse products and places on social networking sites. Last year, reports suggested that Helen Flanagan and Brooke Vincent (Rosie and Sophie Webster) had both been warned over promoting products online.

A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed that the show's stars are told to be careful over what they tweet.

"We never get heavy with them, just a reminder to be careful," the representative explained. "We have a duty of care to make sure that they weren't inadvertently promoting products.

CORRIE stars had a sing-along in the Rovers Return to help promote a charity raising cash to help areas hit by last summer's riots.

TVStars of the ITV1 soap Chris Fountain, Ryan Thomas, Lisa George, Catherine Tyldesley, Georgia May Foote, Ian Puleston-Davies and Peter Gunn gave up their lunch hour on Friday to sing for Project Underdog.

Last year, the charity released a cover of Linkin Park song Iridescent, with proceeds going to help youngsters enter sport and music.

Coronation Street's Kate Ford has said starring in a soap is one of the best jobs for a working mum.

The 34-year-old actress - who has a two-year-old son, Otis, with her TV producer husband James - admitted it was a struggle to juggle the demands of motherhood and work.

"I think it's probably the same as any working mum really. It's hard; there's no two ways about it, but you make it work don't you the best you can," said Kate, who plays conniving Tracy Barlow.

"In many ways actually being in a soap is probably a really good job for a working mum because, like for instance this week I'm only working two days, so it's not a nine-to-five job.

"We do get more time at home than you would do in a nine-to-five job. You get busy times when you're away from home a lot, and then you get times like now, where I've just had four weeks off."

Kate's contract on the show lasts until November 2012 and she admitted: "I don't know beyond that."

I know what I would like to see - the character to be killed off so this person can't come back - ever

She added: "Tracy's a really enjoyable character. She's always up to something."

KERRY KATONA is so desperate to make a comeback that she's hired an agent in a bid to be an actor.
And the reality TV star fancies a starring role on Coronation Street — pulling pints in Weatherfield's Rovers Return.

Kerry, who has had drink and drug problems in the past, said: "Imagine it, leopard print jacket, cigarette in me gob, 'All right love, lager and lime?' I'd be right at home."

The I'm A Celeb, Get Me Out Of Here! winner also thinks she's got what it takes to be a star on the small screen.

She said: "People don't realise how much acting I've done. I was in a comedy drama Showbands which was only shown in Ireland and obviously there's the Iceland adverts."

But if the call doesn't come from Corrie... there's always the Chatsworth Estate.

Kerry added: "I'd be great in Shameless. I can see myself in my pants with a can of beer going, 'all right, love?' "

Kate Ford has revealed she would love to star in a comedy.
The actress - best known for playing Coronation Street's Tracy Barlow - said it would be fun to do something "frivolous".
"I wouldn't mind doing a comedy. That would be quite nice. Something like Benidorm would be good; something frivolous," she said.
The 34-year-old also fancies a part in a Woody Allen film, as she is a big fan of the eccentric filmmaker's work.
"I love Sweet And Lowdown, and Bullets Over Broadway and Annie Hall," she added.
Before making her Corrie debut, Kate worked on the movie The Affair Of The Necklace, which starred Oscar-winner Hilary Swank.
She said: "That was fun, but that was quite scary because it had some big film stars in it; that was my first job. I was working with Hilary Swank, and because I'd just left drama school I was sat next to her in make-up and that was fun and bit like, wow!
"I was on the set of this big budget movie, though it was a really small part. I wasn't even in the final film."

Dancing On Ice contestant Andy Whyment has revealed that he wants to stay in Coronation Street for as long as possible.

The actor admitted that he loves playing Kirk Sutherland in the ITV1 soap and confessed he has no plans to continue skating once the competition ends

"I have been acting since I was eight. But with Corrie I will stay there as long as they will have me. I am into my 11th year and it is a great show. I would love it to be a job for life," Whyment told The Mirror.

"I have got so many close friends there, it is 25 minutes from where I live so I am home every night. It is a fantastic job. I have always loved playing Kirk.

"When Dancing finishes I won't carry on skating much. It would be nice if the kids [son Thomas, three, and one-year-old daughter Hollie] wanted to go, I could show them a few tricks, but I am not an amazing skater, even though I have come on leaps and bounds."

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has rubbished reports of a dispute with his soap colleagues Jack P Shepherd and Ryan Thomas.

The actor, who plays Weatherfield's Sean Tully, mocked the pair on Twitter at the weekend after they jokingly accused him of name-dropping on the social networking site.

Cotton responded by branding Shepherd (David Platt) a "little irritant" and claiming that Thomas (Jason Grimshaw) has "a lot of time on his hands" due to a lack of offers for personal appearances.

Although the 36-year-old quickly assured his followers that the remarks were light-hearted, the tweets have today led to tabloid reports of a "war of words" between the Coronation Street stars.

Writing on his Twitter page this morning, Cotton commented: "Slow news day today obvs (sic). Breaking news!!! @ryanjamesthomas @JackPShepherd88 and I have a sense of humour. I know!!! Outrageous!!!"

He continued: "But seriously though. I called @ryanjamesthomas and @JackPShepherd88 to my office first thing this morning and they issued this statement - 'We apologise unreservedly to the old boot. We promise to make him cups of tea whenever he wants'. I was unavailable for comment."

Cotton recently took a break from Coronation Street to star on ITV1's I'm A Celebrity, but is now back filming and will return to screens in March.

Coronation Street has picked up its second gong in two weeks by winning the top soap prize at the 2012 Broadcast Awards. :cheer:

The Weatherfield show was named 'Best Soap/Continuing Drama' at Thursday night's ceremony, which was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Coronation Street triumphed in the category over fellow nominees Casualty, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Holby City and Hollyoaks.

The Broadcast Awards are not determined by a public vote, but instead use a panel of judges to reward excellence in television each year. Emmerdale claimed the top soap title at last year's ceremony.

Other winners on the evening included Downton Abbey and The Inbetweeners.

Coronation Street's victory comes just a week after the show was named 'Most Popular Serial Drama' at the National Television Awards.

The current Coronation Street set could be preserved as a historic monument, it has been revealed.

The Granada Studios set, including the Rovers Return and the Kabin, is apparently close to being listed by English Heritage and turned into a tourist *attraction, the Sunday Mirror reports.

Filming of Coronation Street is being relocated to the new MediaCityUK complex at Salford Quays this year after being approved by Trafford Council.

An English Heritage source said: "There's a really good chance it will be granted listed status in April. It's a truly iconic place that millions have grown up with, and a lot of historic TV moments have happened there. It would be perfect sense to turn it into a tourist attraction."

The present outdoor set was built in 1982 and *attracted half a million visitors a year on public tours of Granada Studios until 1999.

A brand new set will be built at MediaCityUK and the old site will be sold for development, but it can't be knocked down if it is granted English Heritage status.

An ITV spokesman said: "We are aware of the listing application."

Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson has revealed that he will be sticking with the soap until at least 2013.

Collinson was appointed as the show's boss in November 2009 and took office a few months later, succeeding Kim Crowther.

The programme's chief has now confirmed that he will remain in his position for the foreseeable future, overseeing Coronation Street's studio move to Salford Quays.

Collinson told the Manchester Evening News: "The show is moving to Salford Quays next year. That's a very big move for us. I'll see that through as producer. So that takes me into the middle of next year.

"I can't see beyond that at the moment. I'm happy to be creatively leading the show and still think I've got more stories to tell."

Discussing his role, he said: "It's a tough job. There are a lot of different responsibilities. But I really enjoy it. I was a fan of Coronation Street before I started working on it, so it really is a privilege."

Coronation Street has enjoyed a recent run of success by picking up the top soap prizes at the National Television Awards and Broadcast Awards. The show has also been delivering strong ratings to ITV1.

Former Coronation Street actors Graeme Hawley and David Crellin are to star in the same stage play.

Hawley appeared in the ITV1 soap for four years as John Stape, who went on to steal Colin Fishwick's (Crellin) identity, and cover up his death by burying him at Underworld. Stape later died in a car crash after a brief return last year.

The pair will star in Saturday Night and Sunday Night at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre from next month.

Graeme Hawley revealed that he was glad to appear in a new role after playing a villain for many years.

"It's a good way to go, 'that's done' from Corrie, and now for something completely different," he told the Manchester Evening News. "I'm excited to come and work at the Royal Exchange, it's a unique space.

"Corrie has been the perfect job for me. It's worked out great, there's never been a time when I was kicking my heels in the show, I was either in prison, on the run or dying. From a personal point of view I've been able to go away, do other stuff and return to the role over the months."

He added that he is pleased to have had a definite end for his previous character, saying: "It was also important for me that there was a line drawn under the character this time. If he hadn't been killed there would always be that thing of 'I could go back'."

On reuniting with his former co-star Crellin, Hawley joked: "Our characters don't interact that much in this production, which for David's life is probably a good thing. I might try to accidentally kill him in some shows just to put a twist back in it. But funnily enough it's like we're fated to work together - this is now our seventh job together as actors."

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning also stars This Is England's Perry Fitzpatrick and will run from March 1 to April 7.

Graeme Hawley recently revealed that he would like a part in Hollyoaks to round off a complete set of soap roles.

In May at the Octagon Theatre in Bolton the world premiere of The Queen of the North will be played on stage - a tender, funny and insightful new play about the life of Coronation Street actress Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner.

Taking on the role of Pat Phoenix will be Lynda Rooke. Soap fans might recognise Lynda from Hollyoaks, where she played Jill Patrick from 1997-2000.

Lynda last appeared at the Octagon Theatre in the 1988 production of Corrie writer Jim Cartwright’s Road and was nominated for a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for her performance.

Lynda will be joined onstage by John McArdle who will be taking on the role of Tony Booth, the well-known actor who lived with Pat during the last six years of her life. The couple eventually married in 1986 just days before Pat died. John McArdle has performed several times at the Octagon, most recently in last year’s production The Demolition Man, and is well-known for his TV appearances as Billy Corkhill in Brookside, and roles in Prime Suspect and Mersey Beat.

Lynda Rooke said: “I am so pleased to have the opportunity to take on the role of such a strong and inspiring woman. I’m extremely excited, and honoured, to play such a crucial role and was really impressed with the script as soon as I read it. Ron Rose’s writing is fantastic and I really hope that many people from Bolton and the North West who were fans of Pat Phoenix, or perhaps want to know more about her life, will come and see the production”.

"I wouldn't say no to something like Playboy if it's tastefully done. But I will never get my boobs out, unless it was for a professional acting job. They're my boobs. I don't want the world to see them," Keegan told The Sun.

"I see them as my private bits and I don't want the whole world judging them. But I'd love to do a period drama one day. I've seen nudity in a period drama and thought it looked tasteful. You weren't going, 'Oh my God - her boobs!' It's not like in a picture where you just look like you're showing them off."

Speaking of her 'Sexiest Female' wins at the British Soap Awards, she added: "It's so flattering but I'm the least sexy person. When I first won it my friends were all laughing. Even I was like, 'Why have I won this?'

"That's why, when I win the sexiest soap star award, part of me is pleased because I think people are voting for Tina. She doesn't try too hard to be sexy and that's good. Girls should be like that. They can relate to her. They don't have to go out with their boobs or bum showing."

A teenager has been detained for a minimum of 16 years after murdering his mother in an apparent Coronation Street copycat killing.

Daniel Bartlam, then 14, attacked his mother Jacqueline, 47, with a claw hammer as she slept - before dousing her body with petrol and setting it on fire to destroy evidence, BBC News reports.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that Bartlam had been inspired by Coronation Street villain John Stape, who killed Charlotte Hoyle with a hammer before leaving her body in the wreckage of a tram crash to cover up his involvement.

Police found a clip of the Weatherfield crime on Bartlam's computer, along with videos of violent scenes in Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and horror movie Saw.

Detectives also found a self-penned "soap opera plot" on his computer, in which he fantasised about killing his mum.

Following the murder in April 2011, the boy initially told authorities that an intruder had killed his mother, and kept up the story for some time. However, he later admitted that he had been responsible.

Bartlam, now 15, was found guilty of murder nearly two months ago and has now been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in custody.

Katherine Kelly, who played Becky McDonald in Coronation Street, is to star as Kenny Everett's wife Lee in a biopic called The Best Possible Taste.

The film stars Oliver Lansley as Kenny Everett and Katherine as Kenny's wife Lee Middleton in the biopic of DJ and comic Kenny Everett's life.

The Best Possible Taste will focus on Kenny Everett's relationship with his wife, singer Lee Middleton. It will also feature some of Everett's most famous characters including Sid Snot and US chatshow host Cupid Stunt.

Everett married the singer in 1966 and separated in 1979. Born Maurice Cole, the comic started his professional life as a pirate DJ for Radio London and Radio Luxemburg before joining Radio 1 in the mid 1960s. His TV work included stints at Thames TV from 1978-1980 and his most famous BBC programme, The Kenny Everett Television Show which ran from 1981-1988. "Kenny Everett was a genuine original: wild and unfocused maybe, but also deliciously anarchic and always entertaining,"

BBC Four controller Richard Klein said. "In many ways Kenny was a very modern celebrity, wearing his heart on his sleeve while coping with a complex life. "Re-evaluating this talented and exuberant personality, enabling audiences to reconsider Kenny's undoubted impact and legacy, makes this a very BBC4 drama." Lansley co-starred and co-wrote the short lived BBC comedy Whites, starring Alan Davies.

Andy Whyment, who plays Coronation Street's Kirk Sutherland, says he's got no plans to leave Corrie. In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Andy talks about recently taking part in ITV’s Dancing On Ice and says there’s no fear of him ever giving up the day job as Kirkeh.

He says: “I’ve always said I’ll stay at Corrie as long as they’ll have me, I’ve been there 12 years now and I can honestly say I enjoy it as much today as I did the very first day when I started. Hands up if you can remember Deirdre Barlow's toyboy on Coronation Street? He was called Samir, a Moroccan waiter who Deirdre met on holiday. He's also the one who saved Tracy Barlow's life after her dabble with drugs storyline - and his kidney lives on inside her!

Actor Al Nedjari has given an interview to Yahoo! about his time on Coronation Street – and how much he hated it!

Al says he saw himself as a worthy, idealistic actor who wanted to do really important theatre. He left drama school on Friday and by Sunday evening was on the set of Coronation Street.

From the interview at Yahoo!

You weren’t happy at all?
Ha. I had really mixed feelings. I mean, I knew I was going to get paid to do a job which was why I was going to be an actor but I didn’t really want to be on television and I certainly didn’t want to be on a soap. In the end though, I thought ‘you know, you might never get a first job’ . That happens to a lot of actors. So I thought ‘I’m going to have to say yes to this, aren’t I?’

But do you regret it?
I don’t really, no. I learnt everything there is to know about television acting. I became skilled at it and it was quite fascinating. And it was interesting being part of the culture. But I did struggle being recognised in the street. I hated that. I like to sit in cafes and look at people, so that was really hard. But from a professional point of view, I did make a name for myself.

Watching it again, I don’t think they’d do it now.
I don’t think they would either. They’d had criticism for not including ethnic minorities in the show and their response was to get me in. Someone a bit ethnic.

Were you relieved to be killed off?
I was then. But just recently, I was thinking looking back I would probably stay in the show for longer. Although the character was known, he was there and gone in a flash. I was worried that I’d have to play more Moroccans, but in actual fact, that’s probably a fear that was unfounded.

How did you get on with the rest of the cast?
I got on brilliantly with the immediate people around me. Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre Barlow) and I got on very well and she was lovely and Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) was lovely and at the time it was Dawn Acton playing Tracy and we got on well. But otherwise it was a bit like an airport lounge, the green room there.

By and large people had been there for years and I have to say it was a bit impersonal. A lot of the older actors were slightly contained. They weren’t very nice. I understood it by the end of my time there, though. It takes a lot out of you and if you do it for a number of years it must feel like a hellish routine. It sounds like a sob story but there’s an element of people not giving it any more than they had to. Mind you, it’s not like I was in a particularly good place.

You swan in with your big ideas…
Yeah, I thought I was the big actor and wanted to go off and do something important rather than this frivolous TV stuff. So it’s not like I made friends for life there. I certainly didn’t get on with the young people in the cast, who were well paid and all that. I found that side of it rather facile and objected to it.

Anne Kirkbride is massive on Twitter, you know.
It’s a funny world, isn’t it? She’s a national institution, isn’t she? She’s great. You don’t ever read an article with her talking, do you? She just leaves you with this idea of a TV personality that she wants you to.

Kirkeh knows where he's bread's buttered

You're not wrong there. Although Kirkeh hasn't had any major storylines he knows not to bite the hand that feeds, unlike some soap stars who think once they've done a year on a soap they should be given a staring role in a hollywood blockbuster.

Coronation Street's current set will not be preserved by the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) when the soap's production moves to MediaCityUK, it has been confirmed.

Coronation Street relocates to its new home at Salford Quays next year, leaving the future of its existing base at Quay Street uncertain.

As MOSI is adjacent to Coronation Street's current set, reports have often suggested that the two attractions could be combined.

However, such a move has now been ruled out by MOSI's director Jean M. Franczyk.

Franczyk told Manchester Confidential: "There's going to be someone out there who is probably the best in the world at running a Coronation Street visitor attraction, but it's not going to be the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.

"That's not our role. We have so much work to do in celebrating the historic site and contents we already possess. Coronation Street is for someone else."

Earlier this year, it was rumoured that the Coronation Street set could be listed by English Heritage. The full-street outdoor set was built in 1982.

Bill Roache has revealed that one of his on-screen Coronation Street kisses led to real-life passion once the cameras stopped rolling.

The actor, who plays Ken Barlow on the soap, discusses the mystery romance on Piers Morgan's Life Stories this evening (April 13).

Roache commented: "A kiss is a demonstration of affection and it should be sincere and truly meant, but you've got to be careful to keep the lust out of it when you're acting.

"You can turn lust into love and you can make a kiss truly loving and truly affectionate - a loving and caring kiss without the lust."

Asked how many of his Weatherfield kisses had resulted in off-set passion for him, Roache replied: "One".

However, the 79-year-old refused to reveal the identity of the co-star in question.

Roache filmed his Life Stories appearance last month, and the interview soon made headlines as he confessed to an affair with Pat Phoenix and sex with "up to 1,000 women".

Piers Morgan's Life Stories: Bill Roache airs tonight at 9pm on ITV1.

Coronation Street star Helen Worth is to marry again after getting engaged.

The 61-year-old actress, who plays Gail McIntyre in the ITV1 soap, is engaged to 54-year-old deputy headteacher Trevor Dawson following his proposal last month.

The couple, who have been dating for over a year, plan to marry in front of family and close friends before the end of summer.

"Everyone in the cast is thrilled for Helen - nobody deserves to find happiness more than her. If everything goes right they could be man and wife by the end of the year - they don't see any point in dithering," a friend told The People.

"The one thing missing from her life for many years was a loving *partner to share in her success. She has found that in Trevor and everybody is overjoyed for the pair of them.

"It's a long-distance love affair that has gone the extra mile and they're so good for each other. Helen has always been a very private person, but it's plain to see how *delighted she is with the *development in her love life.

"These days she *appears to be smiling all the time - the fans would hardly *recognise her after having to portray all that awful anguish for so many years. Her engagement is *brilliant news - she's been besieged by genuine friends wishing her *every happiness."

Worth divorced actor Michael Angelis in 2001 after 21 years together when he confessed to having an affair.

Coronation Street stars have reportedly come to an agreement with ITV over their pay.

The cast was facing salary cuts of up to 37.5% after bosses moved the Saturday omnibus from ITV1 to ITV2 in January.

ITV proposed to cut the repeat fee each actor receives since fewer people would watch the show on the digital channel.

The Sunday Mirror reports that cast members, said to include Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) and Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw), have now finalised a deal with ITV after it agreed to pay more than initially offered. The move follows fears that some big names would strike or even quit.

An Equity union *spokesman said: "We've prevented members' incomes falling off the edge of a cliff. That's what would have *happened if they'd lost 37.5 per cent.

"You never get everything you ask for, but we have got more than they initially wanted to give away."

The deal is expected to last for a year before negotiations restart.

Coronation Street's Brooke Vincent was reportedly caught up in a real-life kidnap drama last week.

The Sophie Webster actress was wrongly identified by a petrol station worker as a screaming woman who was mugged, slapped and bundled in a car by an unknown man, The Mirror reports.

The witness, who had served Vincent several times at Gorton in Manchester, was convinced the soap star had been kidnapped before calling 999.

"Brooke was happy to put the record straight that it wasn't her. Police have to be careful in these cases," a source said.

"The attacker is often a boyfriend or husband and the victim can be too scared to tell the truth," the insider added.

Meanwhile, police - who now believe the crime was a domestic assault - have confirmed that they questioned Vincent last Thursday.

Simon Gregson, who plays Coronation Street's Steve McDonald, has become patron of a charity set up to help children of fallen soldiers. Simon is lending his support to Scotty's Little Soldiers, which provides days out, gifts and holidays to the children of service men and women killed in action.

The Norfolk-based charity was started by Nikki Scott, whose husband Lee was killed by a roadside bomb in Helmand province, Afghanistan in July 2009, leaving her to raise their two children.

Father-of-two Simon, whose fictional dad Jim McDonald spent much of his time away with the army, arranged a trip to the Corrie set in Manchester for some of the children. The youngsters enjoyed a tour of the set, learned how the cameras worked and met some of the crew.

Simon said: "I have a huge respect for all of our service men and women, the job they do must be among the hardest in the world for them and their families. For this reason I am extremely proud to be a patron of Scotty's Little Soldiers, a wonderful charity to help some wonderful people."

"I went to Manchester and filmed about three episodes of Coronation Street, during which I had to diagnose and put down Schmeichel," he told the Sunday Mercury.

"I know it's only make-believe but there are a lot of people who take Corrie as gospel.

"The day after, I faced some angry jeers and shouts in the street. I'd be walking along, minding my own business, when I'd hear, 'Oi! You're the guy who killed Schmeichel'."

Asbury added that the sad scenes were actually quite humourous to film as the dog was much more active behind the scenes.

"The dog was hilarious. He was supposed to be on his last legs with renal failure or something, but this particular dog was only about a year old and was very lively.

"Every time I said, 'We've got to put him down', he would jump up with his tongue lolling out, looking the picture of health."

The former Royal Shakespeare Company actor recently toured with director Ed Hall's acclaimed Shakespeare company Propeller.

Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas has joked that he will beat Bill Roache's record of sleeping with over 1,000 women.

Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, made the revelations during an episode of Piers Morgan's Life Stories earlier this year.

"I'll have a go. I'll see if I can beat him," Thomas told The People. "Bill is a god. He's even more godly since he announced he has slept with 1,000 women.

"He is an absolute legend. Bill is so cool, such a cool guy. And nobody can say a bad word about him. He doesn't exploit it at all. It wasn't done in a seedy way.

"When the news came out, my friend Kelvin Fletcher from Emmerdale called me up and said, 'Ryan, can you get me Bill Roache's number. I want to go out for a drink with him'. I thought it was hilarious."

Thomas split from former co-star Tina O'Brien in 2009. The couple have a 3-year-old daughter named Scarlett.

"I'm not thinking about settling down," Thomas added. "I'm nearly 28. I'm having a good time and that's what it's all about. Going out is all part and parcel of being a young lad. We all like a good party, myself included.

"When I'm in nightclubs, girls do throw themselves at me but it's all done in good taste. The majority of them are quite respectful. I'm quite lucky. I get some good girls. I'm not silly with it though and know what I'm doing. I have some good people around me."

The 48-year-old, best known as bookmaker Des Barnes from 1990 until 1998, was hit with a petition after unpaid taxes.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he explained that his decision to direct a film in Africa caused his financial hardship.

Middlemiss recalled: "It was partly-funded by myself but I didn't have the money to fund the rest of the film. Filming came to a grinding halt. It was nearly three-quarters of the way along the line.

"It has been a difficult time. Three-and-a-half years is a long time to fund myself without any income. I have had to get money from family and friends."

He elaborated: "They [the HMRC] applied for whatever they said I owed in back taxes. I disputed it and disputed it again.

"I was waiting for money to come in but I didn't have enough time so they petitioned for bankruptcy. I have petitioned for an annulment and that takes about six weeks to get done."

Coronation Street stars Ryan Thomas and Alan Halsall have renewed their contracts, meaning the pair will stay with the soap for another year.

Thomas, who plays Jason Grimshaw, is said to have bought a talking bird to make the occasion. The actor, who has played builder Jason for over 12 years, has apparently named his pet 'Norris' after the nosey Corrie character.

Halsall, who plays mechanic Tyrone Dobbs, revealed his good news on Twitter yesterday (June 9). He joked that while he may be delighted to be returning to the Street next year, Natalie Gumede, who plays his pregnant on-screen girlfriend Kirsty Soames, might not be so pleased.

"Exclusive! Ha not much of 1. I'm delighted to say I signed my new contract 2day @ corrie!" he wrote. "Good news if ya a fan but not for @NatalieGumede x"

The pair have been involved in a domestic abuse storyline, in which Tyrone has fallen victim to Kirsty's temper.

"Tyrone is one of the Street's most-loved characters so there was no way Phil was going to let [Halsall] go anywhere," an ITV source told the paper.

"He has big plans for him and Natalie."

The source also revealed that Thomas had been given a new nickname after news of his new pet spread on set.

"Ryan is over the moon to be staying," they said.

"He celebrated by buying a cockatiel... it's all he's been talking about. Some of the cast have even *nicknamed him Captain Hook."

The Coronation Street set has been refused listed status by English Heritage.

An application was made so that limitations would be imposed on how the iconic construction in Manchester, which has been in use since 1982, could be altered when the ITV soap moves to the MediaCityUK complex at Salford Quays next spring.

English Heritage said that although the Corrie set is "certainly unusual", it is not historic enough to qualify as a monument and receive protection from being torn down.

"The criteria against which we must assess the architectural significance of buildings - or in this case, a television set - is extremely strict," a statement to BBC News read.

"The oldest buildings [on the set] are just less than 30 years old - and most do not have interiors and therefore exist as facades, most of which have been altered.

"The set as it stands today is an active reminder of the long-running television programme, rather than a survival of an earlier era of television productions."

However, the organisation supported the idea that local groups could "care for" the set and "allow Corrie fans from all over the world to visit and enjoy it".

ITV is considering all bids for the plot where the Corrie set currently resides. It has been suggested that the site could function again as a tourist attraction, as it did between 1998 and 2001.

It was confirmed in April that Coronation Street's current set will not be preserved by the neighbouring Museum of Science and Industry.

Kim Kardashian has reportedly revealed that she would like a Coronation Street cameo.

The socialite is said to have become a fan of British soaps during a recent visit to London.

"Kim was really impressed with British TV — especially Coronation Street and EastEnders," a source told The Sun.

"After watching an episode of Corrie she tried to mimic the Northern accent. She'd love a cameo just so she could sneak around the set."

Kardashian recently joined her boyfriend Kanye West in the UK while he performed in London for his 'Watch the Throne' tour with Jay-Z.

West and Kardashian are said to be moving in together after both put their homes on the market.

The reality TV star recently said that she was studying the works of philosopher Nietzsche in order to impress West.

A bookmaker is taking bets on whether Kim Kardashian may star in a British soap in the future.

The American socialite is said to have become a fan of both Coronation Street and EastEnders when she visited the UK recently.

She reportedly said that she would like to make a cameo in either soap, and has tried to perfect different British accents.

Irish bookmaker Boylesports has set odds of 10/1 that Kardashian will appear in Coronation Street, and 14/1 for EastEnders.

It has also installed odds of 80/1 that her boyfriend Kanye West will join her for a cameo role.

Boylesports spokesperson Nicola McGeady said: "Kim Kardashian is used to getting what she wants but her glamorous LA lifestyle is definitely a far cry away from the Rovers Return!

"It's unlikely she will fit in with the likes of Roy Cropper and co, but stranger things have happened!"

Cheryl Cole has revealed that she would like to play a guest role in Coronation Street.

The 'Call My Name' singer, this week on the verge of a third UK number one single, said she would prefer to make an appearance on the Weatherfield soap over any other TV programme.

She apparently told The People: "I'm here for the music but if I could do a cameo in any show it would be Coronation Street."

The Girls Aloud star added that she "loves" Tina McIntyre actress Michelle Keegan, who she has previously named as her favourite soap star.

Referring to her recent cameo as her talent show judge persona in What to Expect When You're Expecting, Cole added: "I would like to do more acting. I really enjoyed it. It's a lot of fun."

Kim Kardashian was recently tipped for a one-off appearance in Corrie, with bookmakers placing her at 10/1 for a future role on the Manchester soap.

Former X Factor judge Cole became engrossed in Corrie's Frank Foster murder plot earlier this year, rightly predicting who would be unmasked as his killer.

Zoe Ball has said her favourite TV character is Coronation Street's Norris Cole.

The TV presenter said that Norris, who is played by Malcolm Hebden, is Weatherfield's funniest creation.

She told Metro: "He's such a meddler and can be so irritating and annoying but he brings so much comedy to Corrie.

"There is a really funny clip where he does this comedy slip and, if I'm having a bad day, my friend will send it to me to cheer me up."

Newsagent Norris, known for his gossiping ways, has been a resident on the Street since 1994.

Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley has bemoaned the fact that she never gets approached by men outside of the show, and has suggested that her on-screen alter ego might put them off.

The 28-year-old has been single since joining Coronation Street as man-eater Eva Price a year ago.

Speaking to The Mirror, Tyldesley said: "I'm so disillusioned with men at the moment.

"When I'm out I never get approached, unless it's by some drunken idiot. I get the occasional person who will talk to me and there has been some interest, but nothing outrageous. I certainly don't get chatted up.

"Possibly men are intimidated by my screen character, I don't know. I've been single for a while. I've been on a couple of dates, but it's been quite a long time now."

However, she went on the explain: "I'm not bothered, though. I haven't got the time and it's not a priority. It wouldn't be fair to be in a relationship. Work is full-on at the minute so it would be a case of, 'Well, I can fit you in between three and four'."

Tyldesley has previously spoken of her desire for a long future in the soap, an ambition she reiterated to The Mirror, saying: "I'd like to stay in Coronation Street for as long as they'll have me. I'm really happy here."

CORONATION Street chiefs were branded “miseries” last night for playing down the Olympics.

Bosses have ruled that the Games will barely feature in the ITV soap while London hosts the 16-day sporting extravaganza.

By contrast BBC’s EastEnders will feature Billy Mitchell — played by Perry Fenwick — carrying the Olympic Torch through Walford.

And Queen Vic regulars will be frequently chatting about the Games.

But Corrie fans won’t witness such sporting passion 200 miles away in Weatherfield and the Rovers Return.

A Street source revealed: “Any references (to the Olympics) will be in passing and relevant to how it affects our residents, so not overt or heavy at all.

“Its different for EastEnders as it’s on their doorstep.”

But a Corrie insider blasted: “It’s bad form because the Olympics is a national cause for celebration, not just a reason for the East End of London to be happy.

“In the past, the Street has caught the public imagination by recognising things like the World Cup and Royal occasions.

“Millions of fans love Corrie for its sense of humour, but the execs are being a load of miseries over the Olympics by refusing to join in.”

Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati has revealed that she was forced to quit Twitter over "violent, vitriolic" racist abuse.

The actress, who plays Sunita Alahan on the ITV soap, announced that she was leaving the social networking site on June 17.

"Tweets ta dees need another twitter break," she wrote. "Thanks for the banter the follows the support loved being back but now time to sort other stuff."

Explaining her decision to exit Twitter, Gulati confessed that she could no longer tolerate "psycho[s]" calling her things like "not British" and "the ugliest f**ker ever seen".

"Being racially abused on Twitter really shook me up," she told The Sun. "It felt like going back in time to the 1970s.

"It put me in mind of a psycho - like a horror movie. I just decided enough was enough.

"I tried to ignore it but it started to affect my confidence. Violent, vitriolic hatred gives people their moment in the spotlight. It beggars belief."

Gulati previously slammed the 'misogynistic' response from Twitter users to Sunita's affair with Karl Munro (John Michie), though she later claimed to revel in the controversy caused by the storyline.

Coronation Street's Shobna Gulati and John Barrowman have been named as 2012's winners of 'Rear of the Year'.

The pair inherited the title from last year's winners Carol Vorderman and Anton du Beke after topping a public vote.

Speaking after her victory, Gulati - who plays Sunita Alahan on the ITV soap - declared: "I am really honoured and flattered to be a winner of this year's competition and for my bum to be etched into the history of the award's alumni - a list which includes so many other distinguished bottoms.

"And I'd also like to say... in the words of will.i.am, 'I got it from my mama'."

Barrowman added: "With tush tightly toned, cheeks firmly clenched and a big smile on my face, I'm thrilled to be awarded the accolade."

The Torchwood star also posted a thank you message on Twitter in which he revealed that he won 'Rear of the Year' "by a landslide".

Gulati and Barrowman were described by Sally Allen of sponsors Wizard Jeans as "two excellent examples of this year's ideal rear".

She said: "Shobna's slim but womanly silhouette is a fine example of the happy, healthy female form for 2012 and John's rear is clearly admired on an international basis, judging by the number of fans who voted for him. No doubt his dancing prowess helps to keep him in tremendous shape."

Previous winners of 'Rear of the Year' include Jennifer Ellison, Rachel Stevens, Will Young and Gulati's Corrie co-star Ryan Thomas.

Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent has been moved to tears on her current trip to Kenya, according to a report.

The actress, who plays Weatherfield's Sophie Webster, is filming an ITV documentary titled Corrie Goes To Kenya with some of her soap colleagues. The one-off programme will raise awareness of HIV in the country.
Vincent became emotional when visiting children in a Kenyan slum two days ago, the Daily Star reports.

A source told the newspaper: "Brooke was moved to tears by these kids, not because they lived in such awful conditions but because they live life with a smile on their faces despite the hardships."

Vincent later tweeted that she was "humbled" by the experience. Meanwhile, Jason Grimshaw actor Ryan Thomas - who is also filming the documentary - said that the visit has been "life-changing".

Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw) and Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) are also thought to be involved in the project.

Corrie Goes To Kenya will air in July.

Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver has been hospitalised after contracting a mystery illness while filming in Kenya.

Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw in the ITV soap, was taking part in a documentary called Corrie Goes To Kenya with fellow cast members Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster), Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw) and Ben Price (Nick Tilsley).

As part of the programme, the stars visited local tribes who are still struggling after last year's famine. They also aimed to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.

Cleaver, 47, began to feel ill after returning to the UK. She was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency testing to rule out the possibility that she had contracted malaria.

After doctors determined that she was clear of the disease, the actress was sent home to recover, but continues to feel unwell. It is not known when she will be able to return to the soap.

"No-one really knows what's wrong with Sue, but she's been feeling very ill," a source told The Mirror.

"It started pretty much as soon as she got back from Kenya.

"Obviously serious alarm bells start ringing when you come back from Africa feeling unwell *because you hear so many horror stories about people contracting *diseases out there."

The source added: "Sue spent a lot of time with children in *orphanages. She ate food cooked in the traditional way, often out in the bush. It means there were a great many times when she could have picked up a bug."

The paper reports that Cleaver was not due to film many scenes last week, meaning there was little disruption to the schedule.

"It may become a *problem if she's off too much longer," the insider added. "Having said that, all the bosses are concerned about is her recovery."

Corrie Goes To Kenya is due to air later this month.

Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent has admitted that she is relieved to have a less hectic soap schedule this year.

The actress's character Sophie Webster has had quieter times on the cobbles since the emotional departure of her girlfriend Sian Powers last Christmas.

Speaking to Digital Spy at T4 on the Beach yesterday (July 1), Vincent explained that she has been able to enjoy more free time in recent months.

Asked what is coming up for Sophie, Vincent replied: "I don't really know at the minute. I've been in Kenya with work… so I've been pretty much focused on that. I've not really been in work.

"It's been nice because my boyfriend only gets a month off work, so I've been to see him, I've been on holiday with him and I've been to Kenya.

"I've had a nice little chill and a relax, because last year was absolutely hectic - we were in pretty much every day. So it's nice to have a bit of a break, but I can't wait to get back in there."

Vincent appeared at the music event with former co-star Sacha Parkinson, who played the role of Sian.

Discussing her future, Parkinson said: "I'm just auditioning at the moment, and I've gone back to drama school - I'm trying to get a bit better! I'm kind of glad that I've had a bit of time off because I've been trying to pass my [driving] test for about three years, so I've finally done that, thank God!"

Earlier this year, reports suggested that Sophie would become embroiled in Ryan Connor's drugs storyline - but this remains unconfirmed by show bosses.

The Eileen Grimshaw actress contracted the bug while filming an ITV documentary in Kenya with other Corrie co-stars.

The 47-year-old - who was rushed to hospital after coming back to the UK - is filming again on the ITV soap from today, according to MSN.

Some of Eileen's scenes scheduled for earlier this week have been cut by producers, but her storylines haven't been affected.

There were fears that bosses would have to drastically reinvent plots to explain Cleaver's on-screen absence.

Corrie Goes To Kenya, which also features Brooke Vincent, Ryan Thomas and Ben Price, airs later this month on ITV1.

Coronation Street actress Brooke Vincent has said that co-star Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) must be "going mad" over the interest in her relationship with Max George.

Keegan was forced to deny rumours of her separation from the Wanted singer earlier this year, but speculation about their relationship intensified after they called off their engagement in April.

"I think sometimes it does get to her," Vincent - who plays Sophie Webster on the ITV soap - told Heat.

"As much as everyone wants to know what's going on, that's her relationship, her feelings and her thoughts, so I think it must do her head in."

She continued: "Michelle is a very strong person. She's very clever - I'd be going mad if that was me. I hate the fact that people think they can get involved in your relationship.

"Because Max and Michelle got together in the public eye, people think they're okay to talk about it or alright to comment on it, but you never know the truth."

Keegan is said to be on the verge of renewing her Coronation Street contract.

Claims that she would take a break from the show to appear on Strictly Come Dancing were denied earlier this week.

Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas has been approached for I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

The actor, who plays Jason Grimshaw on the soap, is considering an offer to take part in the jungle-based reality show, The Sun reports.

Sean Bean has once again expressed a desire to appear in Coronation Street.

The Game of Thrones actor said that he would happily "pop up" in Weatherfield for a brief period if bosses at the ITV soap could find him a good role.

"I would love to pop up in Corrie if they find me the right character," the Daily Star quotes him as saying. "But maybe one that doesn't stay too long."

Bean last called out for a Coronation Street cameo in 2010, describing the programme as his "favourite soap".

"They haven't contacted me or my agent about it," he said at the time. "So it's over to them."

Julia Walters, Cheryl Cole, Snoop Dogg and Kim Kardashian are among the other celebrities to have put themselves forward for a Coronation Street role.

CORRIE stars’ Strictly Come Dancing dreams have been given the cha-cha-chop.

Bosses have banned cast members from signing up for the BBC contest.

But they WILL let Street favourites entertain offers for ITV shows I’m A Celebrity and Dancing On Ice.

A Corrie source said: “It’s a no-brainer for us. Why would we allow cast members time off to go to film a show for a rival channel?”

The show’s Michelle Keegan was a target for the new Strictly. But the source added: “The BBC’s offer never got off the ground — we wouldn’t release her from her contract.

“That goes for everyone else in the cast but we are more open when it comes to ITV shows.”

Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully, was the first Corrie actor to be given time off for a reality show when he joined I’m A Celebrity last year.

Michelle, who split with The Wanted’s Max George last month, will be rewarded for her loyalty when her ITV contract is renewed later this year.

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan and Fern Britton are signed for Strictly and Westlife’s Nicky Byrne is said to be close. Bosses have also approached former BBC presenter Sian Williams, Winter Olympics heroine Amy Williams and DJ Chris Evans.

Strictly returns next month, going head to head with ITV’s The X Factor, which starts later this month.

Coronation Street helped a 17-year-old boy come forward about a rape attack years ago.

The boy explained that watching a storyline involving the rape of Carla (Alison King) by Frank (Andrew Lancel) gave him the courage to tell police about the incident.

Daniel Bird, 24, from Sale Moor, was convicted of four counts of rape and sentenced to four years in prison. The victim was 8 at the time of the incident in 2004, while Bird was 15.

A spokesperson for Coronation Street said: "Having worked closely with the St Mary's Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Manchester on this storyline, we are pleased that the portrayal and subsequent aftermath of Carla's rape on Coronation Street has helped this victim to seek the appropriate help and guidance needed.

"We never seek to highlight an issue - just tell the best story for every character. When we do touch on issues we obviously strive to make sure our research is flawless and the depiction an accurate and truthful one."

Dr Catherine White, Clinical Director of the St Mary's Centre, added: "St Mary's provided advice to script writers and producers on how to portray the actual rape as well as advising on what the character might expect in terms of services at a Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

"St Mary's was also on the set during filming providing advice so that the portrayal of SARC services was as accurate as possible.

"It is encouraging that our work with Coronation Street has resulted in people coming forward and reporting their experience and ensuring they get the ongoing support they need."

Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson defended the rape storyline back in February.

Coronation Street's Ryan Thomas has opened up about his experience filming ITV special Corrie Goes To Kenya.

The Jason Grimshaw actor admitted that his partaking in killing a goat left him "totally traumatised" and on the verge of vomiting.

"There was a ritual where they wanted to feed us goat, so we had to kill one," he told The Sun.

"I had to hold its legs while they slaughtered it. I was nearly being sick. I was totally traumatised - until we skinned and ate it."

However, Thomas added that his terror was short lived, praising the Kenyan tribe for the ritual.

The 28-year-old added: "We put loads of garlic and lemon and herbs on it and threw it on the barbecue and it was pretty damn tasty!

"I realised that it was actually an honour for us to be given the goat by the tribe. This is their tradition and I respected that."

Corrie Goes To Kenya's first episode of a two-part special will be broadcast on Friday, August 17 at 9pm on ITV1.

Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster), Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw) and Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) also took part in the programme.

Corrie's boss is set to quit by the end of the year… and he wants to go out with a bang that will rock Street fans.

Controversial executive producer Phil Collinson is considering plans to blow up the Rovers in a dramatic swansong to his time on the ITV1 soap, said an insider.

And it’s left many cast members fearful they may be killed off in his final sensational plotline.

“Blowing up the Rovers would be the most dramatic thing to happen on the Street,” a source said yesterday. “Phil thinks millions of extra viewers would tune in. But it means everyone on in the show is looking over their shoulder wondering if they’ll be inside when the pub goes up in smoke.”

Collinson revealed in February that he planned to quit by “the middle of next year”. But Corrie sources have told the Sunday Mirror he will move on earlier than planned as part of a shake-up by ITV bosses. “A lot of the cast are wondering what the future holds,” said our insider.

Collinson, 43, has been renowned for explosive storylines since arriving on the cobbles in 2009. He wrote a live 50th anniversary episode in December 2010 which featured a tram crash that killed off two characters.

Viewers have also been enthralled by the John Snape murders and Frank Foster’s controversial rape of fiancée Carla Connor.

And in May Corrie beat *EastEnders to win a Best Drama Bafta. But the cast have been worried by the amount of gay plotlines introduced by Collinson, who is gay himself.

A Street spokesman yesterday declined to comment on when *Collinson would go.

Coronation Street star Michelle Collins has said that giving evidence in a child abuse case was a "complete nightmare".

The actress, who plays landlady Stella Price in the soap, testified as part of a case where two parents were convicted of torturing their five young children.

The 51-year-old had initially taken pity on the family in late 2009 and taken the children out on day trips. When she alerted social services that they didn't appear to be attending school, the parents - who were later found to have given their 1-year-old baby a morphine overdose and beaten their older children with brooms, hoovers and wires - told the courts that Collins was planning to "steal" the children, who had been "brainwashed" into making the allegations by police.

As a result, Collins was subjected to a hate mail campaign and internet abuse, which only ended when the pair were eventually sentenced to seven years in jail last Tuesday (August 14).

"I has been a complete nightmare," she told The People.

"I came out mentally, completely exhausted by it all thinking please God let this be over, I can't do it anymore. It was horrible.

"I have been an innocent party in all this. I've had awful accusations over the past couple of years.

"For me it's the worst thing in the world for somebody to say I'm trying to take *someone's children away. But I would still do it all over again if I thought a child was under threat.

"It was the hardest thing I've ever done...[but] a year later those children could have been dead and I would be wishing I had done something."

After the investigation began, Collins heard nothing more about the family until the beginning of last year.

"I was told I was being taken to court by the family because there was a conspiracy between me and the council to take the children away so I could adopt them," she explained. "I was astonished and shocked... but I was then subpoenaed to attend a family court.

"I thought 'I'm a working actress, what am I doing getting involved in this?' It's like the storyline of a soap opera.

"It was very heavy going but you don't want to moan about it because it's a very serious issue."

Collins also revealed that she was not aware of the extent of the abuse until the trial.

"It almost made me cry when I read what the parents did to them," she said. "It's heartbreaking. I just hope the kids are in a much better place now."

Julie Goodyear has boldly ruled out a return to her Coronation Street role as Bet Lynch.

Goodyear, who is currently in the Celebrity Big Brother house, has long been linked with a comeback.

Speaking to the latest OK! magazine, the actress stated: "Would I go back? No."

The 70-year-old explained that the soap, which films nearly two hours of material every week, would be too physically gruelling.

"The schedule now is way above and beyond," Goodyear hypothesised. "When I began it was two episodes a week. It's become more and more."

Goodyear further claimed that, while she respects the current cast's level of commitment, her performance would suffer with such high-turnaround scenes.

"I've tremendous admiration for them being able to do it, but I'm a perfectionist in my work," she added. "I need rehearsals, tech-runs, make-up and costume."

The Weatherfield legend, who was last seen on the cobbles in 2002, was previously rumoured to be making a guest appearance for the funeral of Betty Williams last year.

The star briefly reprised her Bet Lynch role in March for blighted Corrie musical Street of Dreams.

ITV has confirmed a new six-part series of Coronation Street documentary retrospective The Corrie Years.

The new series follows a successful run earlier in the year, which is currently being repeated on ITV1.

The show, narrated by Katherine Kelly, details many of the untold stories behind some of the most memorable plotlines on the long-running soap.

Series two of The Corrie Years will begin with a 'Scandals' special, looking at some of the most shocking revelations to take place on the street over its 50-year history.

The premiere will feature Jane Danson discussing the controversial storyline where Leanne was forced into prostitution, as well as current Celebrity Big Brother star Julie Goodyear on Bet's revelation of a teenage pregnancy.

Goodyear tells the programme: "I couldn't believe it when I read it because I was in that position. I know how she felt, but I had wonderful parents, so I could keep my son; Bet couldn't."

The Corrie Years will return to ITV1 on September 6 at 8.30pm.

Coronation Street legend Bill Roache has signed up for BBC One's Who Do You Think You Are?.

The 80-year-old actor, who has played Weatherfield's Ken Barlow for 52 years, will appear in the current series of the family history programme later in the autumn.

The Ilkeston Advertiser reports that the star's trail includes an interesting tale about his maternal grandmother Zillah Waddicor, a businesswoman who ran Alton Towers as a stately home between the World Wars.

Producers of the BBC show decided to focus more attention on his mother's side of the family, which took him out of Derbyshire.

Samantha Womack and Gregg Wallace have been the first two faces on Who Do You Think You Are? this year, with the popular show continuing for the next six weeks.

Next week's edition will feature Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart, airing in its usual Wednesday 9pm slot on BBC One.

Former Emmerdale actress Sian Reeves has said that she would love a role in Coronation Street.

Reeves, who played stalker Sally Spode in the Yorkshire soap and is currently starring in Sky Living comedy-drama Mount Pleasant, said a move to Manchester would enable her to stay near her daughter who plans to go to university in the area this autumn.

"I would love to do Corrie. EastEnders would be good as well because it's near home - although soon [my daughter] Bessie's going to be off getting drunk at Leeds or Manchester University so maybe I can go and join her," she said.

"You do work much harder in a soap, because the episode turnover is just horrific, but I'd never say no because something interesting might come up."

Reeves left Emmerdale two years ago, when her character was sectioned after drugging Ashley Thomas (John Middleton), assaulting him and claiming to be pregnant with his baby. Despite enjoying a dramatic exit, the actress has not ruled out a return to the dales.

"I did really well out of Sally Spode," said Reeves. "I had a lovely time up there with Charlotte Bellamy and John Middleton, who play Laurel and Ashley, and I'm still in touch with them.

"It was a gift of a role, and I have to thank [former Emmerdale producer] Mr Gavin Blythe who sadly died in 2010... He was the one who championed me, and I just thought he was so brave to bring a predator into the village."

She added: "Sally's still in a mental home, so I could actually come back."

Mount Pleasant can be seen on Wednesdays at 9pm on Sky Living HD.

Julie Hesmondhalgh has thanked Coronation Street producers for allowing her time off to star in a stage play.

The Hayley Cropper actress is taking a two-month break from filming to appear in Black Roses at Manchester's Royal Exchange.

Black Roses is about the murder of student Sophie Lancaster. Hesmondhalgh has been involved with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation since 2010.

She told BBC Breakfast: "It's quite well known in Corrie, my involvement with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.

"So when the play came up, they understood how important it was to me and so they went all-out to give me the time off to do it, so I'm really grateful to them.

"I'm going to be off now until the end of September, rehearsing and performing the play."

Speaking about her Corrie character Hayley's recent love triangle storyline with Roy and Mary, the star admitted that she was worried about the threat to her on-screen marriage.

The 42-year-old said: "I did not enjoy it! Of course I didn't enjoy it! We've sorted it out now, though; in true Corrie style it took one episode to bury the hatchet and sort it all out!"

Coronation Street star Bill Roache has shared his theories about the apparent Mayan prediction that the world will end in 2012.

The actor, who plays Ken Barlow on the ITV soap, prophesied that the apocalypse will not occur this December as some believe, but instead a "golden age" for humanity will be ushered in.

"The world will not end in 2012. But it will change dramatically," he warned Silent Voices, a spiritual, paranormal and metaphysical magazine.

"It is moving to a higher vibration and all who are open, ready and willing can move with her."

He continued: "This will be the golden age, when a majority will know that they are love and that they are spiritual beings.

"The earth will continue to cleanse itself while material and negative things will collapse and cease to be."

However, Roache rejected suggestions that his comments were rooted in any form of religion or belief system.

"I am not now, nor have I ever been a spiritualist," he said. "Understand we are all pure love, made in love, living in love. It is urgent to get this over. Time is running out."

Roache previously caused a stir when talking to the media by claiming that he had slept with about 1,000 women.

Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan has claimed that her success is down to luck.

The 25-year-old actress, who plays Tina McIntyre on the ITV soap, said that she couldn't believe how far she had come in a relatively short amount of time.

Speaking on today's (September 6) edition of Lorraine, Keegan recalled: "I always wanted to be an actress but I thought you had to start at a young age and I didn't know how.

"I started acting at 19, and was just really lucky. It was a case of right place, right time."

Keegan went on to admit that she continues to gets "starstruck" by some of her Coronation Street co-stars.

'I'm still starstruck by most of them," she said. "It's really weird because I grew up watching Corrie and I still have to pinch myself that I'm actually still there."

Keegan's character is currently at the centre of a controversial surrogacy storyline.

The actress herself was recently reported to be dating rugby star Mark Flanagan following her break-up with The Wanted's Max George.

Former Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel has signed up to play Beatles manager Brian Epstein in a forthcoming Liverpool stage production.

The actor will take on the title role in the world premiere run of Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles, which is launching to coincide with the legendary band's 50th anniversary year.

Running from November 15 to December 1, The Man Who Made The Beatles will be the first major production at Liverpool's newly-refurbished Epstein Theatre, named after Brian.

Lancel commented: "As a Beatles fan, it's a daunting but hugely exciting challenge to be playing Brian Epstein, and I was very honoured to be asked.

"This is the first play I've accepted in 10 years which says a lot - it's a powerful and moving piece, but also an entertaining insight into one of our own and what makes him tick."

Director and co-creator Jen Heyes added: "I am so pleased that Andrew Lancel has accepted the part of Brian Epstein.

"The casting process was a long and considered one as befits this iconic role, and I can think of no-one better to play Brian than Andrew - a professional Liverpool actor who has become a household name, with a fantastic and varied body of work under his belt.

"We had a responsibility to find the right actor for this role, and I am extremely excited to have Andrew on board. I know he will do Brian justice, and he even has a resemblance to him which is an added bonus."

The two-hander multi-media play will chart the adult life and career of Epstein, from his drama school days to managing the world's biggest pop group. The entrepreneur died from an accidental overdose in 1967 at the age of 32.

Lancel finished filming his role as Coronation Street villain Frank Foster earlier this year. The actor is also well-known for his part as DI Neil Manson on The Bill.

Coronation Street legend Barbara Knox has revealed that she enjoys interacting with the soap's fans when she is out in public.

The 78-year-old actress, who plays Weatherfield favourite Rita Tanner, discussed the ITV1 show's loyal following as she made a rare live television appearance on Lorraine today (September 19).

Asked whether she is able to do her own shopping with such a recognisable face, Knox replied: "Well, I do because I think I should. At the end of the day, I'm a human being and I have to do my own shopping, and actually it's very, very nice.

"People are very nice, they love the programme, they come up to you and they are so kind. They tell you what we should have done, what we might have done, and 'Why didn't you…?'

"It's very nice, actually, because the programme hasn't got stale. People still love it. I do go about and sometimes they grab my arm and say, 'Come here, you!' I don't particularly like that, but I suppose it's affectionate in a way!"

She continued: "It has been about 40 years [for Rita], so people are bound to recognise you. If you stay around long enough, I think they come to like you - well, I hope so!"

Knox confirmed that she still enjoys her storylines, and is particularly pleased over Rita and Dennis now being married.

She explained: "I've been very lucky. Lovely stories, lovely people, and lovely to have Philip Lowrie back - wonderful."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1.

Julie Goodyear has ruled out ever returning to Coronation Street.

The actress played the iconic role of Bet Lynch for over 25 years until 1995. She has made several brief returns, most recently in November 2003.

"I'll never play her on screen again. I'm in a position where I've worked hard so I can pick and choose what I do. I don't want a return to the spotlight," Goodyear told the Daily Star.

"Fans ask me about Bet every day but I want to leave my legacy as it is. With quantity you lose quality. And I'm a perfectionist. I have done 25 years and more than 2,000 episodes. The schedule now is so much tougher than when I was on it."

Speaking of meeting fans, she added: "Because people feel they know me, they don't feel like they're meeting an intimidating character. The public sees me as a friend.

"Bet was everybody's friend, sister, mother, auntie. I always have time for fans. They're the ones who put me there in the first place."

Goodyear finished seventh on this summer's Celebrity Big Brother.

Michelle Collins has revealed she nearly quit Coronation Street until a spiritual life coach persuaded her to continue on the soap.

The actress, who plays Rovers Return landlady Stella Price, told Spirit & Destiny magazine criticisms of her accent when she joined the show almost pushed her to resign.

Collins admitted it was support from her life coach Simon and psychic Cara that help her continue in the role.

"I was nervous to be joining Corrie, but consulted a dialect coach to get the accent right," she said.

"So when I was slated, I seriously considered walking away. But Cara and Simon gave me the confidence to stay, to defy my critics and prove myself."

Collins also revealed that she has gone back to a previous life in sessions with psychics, saying: "I've been regressed twice.

"I was a young girl, living in London in Victorian times and my baby had died... The fear has gone from my life. My aura is shiny and bright."

Collins testified last month against two parents who were convicted of abusing their five children, later admitting the situation had been a "nightmare".
