Former Eastenders star Tom Ellis is reportedly in the running to play the next Time Lord.

The 29-year-old has apparently emerged as a candidate to take over from David Tennant, who is to step down from Doctor Who at the end of next year.

Ellis, who is married to Tamzin Outhwaite, played Dr Oliver Cousins in the BBC soap during 2006. Other names linked to the iconic role include Robert Carlyle, Paterson Joseph and David Morrissey.

A BBC source told The Mirror: "Tom is the frontrunner for the job and is very interested."

Ellis previously appeared on Doctor Who in the role of Thomas Milligan.

I can't see him getting it, to be honest. It would be strange, since Martha is engaged to him; just as it would be if Billie Piper got the role.

Still, Freema played Martha and Martha's cousin and I didn't even recognise Tom Ellis when he was in Doctor Who  Maybe if they had him looking something like he did in EastEnders then it would be better than it was when Freema had 2 roles as she was easily recognised. Could've been just me that didn't recognise Ellis as Tom Milligan though...

Colin Baker had been in Doctor Who before he became the Doctor. Could easily happen again. Because if they want a more "unknown" actor, they will still want to be certain they are up for it, so spotting people on the show would be a good way of casting. Like you said with Freema, she only got offered an audition because she did well as the other character.
