Hey guys

basically we're setting up the internet soon in our student house, and when it comes down to paying line rental and internet costs with bt internet it comes up to 26 quid a month.

now for the same price we could be paying line rental, and also getting broadband, phone and sky tv for the same price

question is, can you have sky installed when your only renting a place? do you need landlords permission? if so do you reckon they are likely to say yes or not?

any students who have lived in rented acommodation can you give me any advice on this, or any internet provider that gives cheap internet (including line rental costs)

thanks!

not lived in student accomadation but we do rent and sky did say we had to ask for landlord permission to ahve sky installed. have they had sky at the house before at all?? if they have you shouldnt have any pribs with your landlord

we have the sky internet and for me its good, sometimes a bit slow but most of time brill and i only had one day where the net went down! ipay the £5 a month extra though for faster speed and more downloads!

yeh you do have to ask the landlord if you want sky, our landlord owns all 10 houses on our little stretch of road and he wouldnt let one have have sky unless at least 4 other houses wanted it cos he said it would make the houses look ugly! but most will probably say yes. we decided not to get sky cos we didnt want the distraction in our house but now i think we probably should cos we have bt and although its been good as you say its more expensive, but cos theres 6 of us in our house it only works out £50 a year each which isnt too bad considering we were paying that per term when we were living on campus! also make sure when you order it that you tell them how many people are living in your house just to make sure that it will cope with that many people using it at once (most do but its better to check). hope you have better luck setting it all up than we did!

you'll need to get something called a wayleave form filled in from your landlard which shows thy have given you permission for this. Another thing you'll need to remember is that these types of companys have 12 month contracts so if your thinking of only living there during term time i.e. 9 months of the year you will need to pay for the full 12 months

oh yeh i forgot about the contracts, we got a 18month one cos we are gonna live in the same house next year as well, but some we looked at started off with 3month contracts (although they didnt look very good). are you thinking of setting the internet up now or in september? cos if youre setting it up now a 12month one would be ok even if youre not staying next year

just phoned up the letting agency and they said they'll have to liase with the landlord about sky - but they cant do it for a couple of weeks as they're busy with everyone moving in on 1st July! This is so annoying, it's one call that would take 30 seconds, they could even do it now!

Until we know whether we can have Sky or not, I wont be able to have any internet, fair enough if we cant have sky then we have BT Broadband, but we can't set that up until we know we can't have sky!

It's all very stressful! Looks like i'm gonna have to trek all the way to the library whenever i want to use the net. And when I'm ordering the broadband i'll have to faff about in library/internet cafe organising it!

Tbh i think landlords should set up broadband for you in student houses, it's an essential thing like electricity and water, so should all be set up for you.

Is there not an organisation that could lobby this for students? With the money landlords charge, they would rake the money for this investment back in no time. These days, broadband is a normal requirement for students to achieve their educational goals and landlords should appreciate this.

can you not contact the landlord directly? that way it would get done quicker, and through my experience this year the letting agents are absolute crap so you could be waiting a while for it to get done! its so annoying having to go up to uni just to use the internet, it was getting stupid we had to do it for about 2months! and i agree with you that it should be set up, i know some landlords do set it up already, we didnt even have a phone line when we moved into our house and the landlord told us we had to sort it out ourselves!

i think our landlord has opted out of having direct contact with us. but if he happens to come visit us for a breif hello on the day of moving in we'll ask him then.

i hope he will let us have sky, becuase i'd feel better spending 8 quid (26 quid divided by three people) a month on sky, phone and broaband, rather than just broadband for the same price with BT.

oh right, our letting agents never want to do anything they always say we have to speak to the landlord directly, didnt know the landlord could opt out of doing that. i suppose its better value cos theres only 3 of you so youll be paying double what we pay in our house. with sky do you get all phone calls free? cos with bt we get evenings and weekends free

thats good. you wouldnt believe how long it takes to set the internet up! once we had got over the hassel of getting our phone line activated, we phoned up for the internet thinking it would be sent the next day and they said they had to find an available slot which was ridiculous! it was such a relief when it was all sorted lol!
