If it is the cabbage soup, be careful. I ended up in hospital after three days of eating cabbage soup with a bleeding stomach. I have since also learned that unless you get organic cabbage, that vegetable is the worst to soak up all the nitrates and other crap put on as fertiliser. I will not try it again.

My mum makes fat burning soup. It's for patients to lose weight before heart surgery. It's really nice, and filling.

I'll ask her for the recipe. :)

that sounds great, i'd really appreciate the recipe stars!

what about this no carbs after 5pm diet? as anyone heard of it working?

the thing is all of my evening meals have carbs in them! so what am i meant to do? have my evening meal at lunch and a sandwhich for dinner? :searchme:

this dieting lark is so difficult as so many things contradict one another. like they say to eat lots of protein (meat etc) but meat has a lot of fat in it. and they say drink a pint of milk a day ( well thats full of fat)

Meat contains a lot of protein which the body can't store. That's why the Atkins diet works so well for the first stage. If you're just consuming meat and nothing else then you would be ok with the fat. Lean meat is a good choice if you're eating carbs and veg.

You need milk for calcium, women especially. Women are more prone to osteoporosis in later life than men because of the high levels of oestrogen in the body. Consuming lots of calcium through milk and other dairy products is important.

If you don't want to drink milk because of the fat, choose skimmed milk. It has a lot less fat than whole milk.

At the end of the day, everything contains fat. Some food groups and products contain more than others. As long as you stay within the recommended daily requirements you should be ok. For men it's 90g of fat and 70g for women.

Not sure of the carbs after 5pm idea. It's a myth that eating late at night causes weight gain.

my sis said she read somewhere that you shouldnt eat carbs after 6pm or anything after 8pm. im quite good at that when im at home but when im at uni at least 3days a week i dont get in til half 7 so unless i have a salad when i get in then i cant stick to that. also, bread contains carbs so having a sandwich at dinner wouldnt help

its something to do with your metabolism stopping when you sleep, so if you eat too late in the day just before you go to bed your food wont have time to digest so the calories wont be burnt up

i tend to have my meals early anyways so that shouldnt be a problem to eat before 6pm! then i tend to snack on fruit, but your saying i cant eat that after 8pm? my downfall is snacking after my evening meal. i just need to dicpline myself. i dont have any snacks food in the house to prevent myself from doing so, so i just snack on fruit. But then sometimes I'll go and bake a loaf of bread and eat it all in oen night with a tub of butter (I really need to stop that!)

Yeah I heard that if you eat late at night the body doesnt digest it, as you say your body shuts down when you go to bed. one of my mates at uni doesnt eat anything until 9pm at night and then shes having chips, kebabs, burgers, and she wonders why she's so fat, there's no way the body was digest all that crap before she goes to bed.

erm im not sure if snacks are ok, it might depend on how long before you go to bed you eat them, ie dont eat straight before you go to bed. i know though that you shouldnt eat "heavy" fruits such as apples before going to bed cos they dont digest and something about it not being good for you, i cant remember exactly lol which isnt useful! but i think a small amount of soft fruit might be ok, although id say you should make sure you eat it about 2hrs before you go to bed, so at least it has started to digest slightly before you go to bed. i just try and dont eat after 8pm, but it is difficult!

Tell me about it! I cringed when I watched one episode of "You Are What You Eat" with Gillian McKeith... her outlook on a healthy lifestyle is wrong in my opinion... she seems to object to any kind of "junk" food and it seems to be "healthy" foods all the way with her, to me she brings across the message "Junk food is bad. Healthy Food is good" ... I think this message is untrue, we all need a balanced diet. Every food has some goodness in it even if it's junk food, it's just the amount that we eat of that certain food that causes the most damage! I think what Gillian McKeith comes out with is the poo that she craves to talk about.

All of this "don't eat this or that" is a load of rubbish to me (no pun intended)

I found that to lose weight the best thing I did was exercise regularly, eat smaller portions and I stopped snacking in between meals. We eat everything for a purpose and we shouldn't deny ourselves anything... jsut eat everything in better proportion I say. I still ate carbs and protein and calcium and fat... jsut cut down on how much I did eat and it worked a treat.
No need for all these fad diets and denying ourselves. :)

yeh junk food is ok for you if you eat it in moderation. eating too much off certain "healthy" foods can also do you more harm than good. is gillian the lady who analyses peoples poo to see if its the right colour etc? there was someone on jonathon ross a few months ago talking about looking at poo and how it should look a certain way, was that her? if so, i think shes rather stupid. its good to eat healthy, but she seemed far too obsessed with not eating anything that might be even slightly unhealthy for you. and i cant believe she makes her kids eat like that too!

Every food is good in moderation. If people listened to everything these researches said about what we can't eat then we wouldn't have much in our diet.

And don't get me started on Gillian McKeith, she's another person I really can't stand.

We can't all be gym freeks who eat museli with natural yoghurt for breakfast and grilled chicken with salad for tea and snack on carrot sticks and celery. I wouldn't want to be.

There are different types of fat. Saturated fats are the worst kind. They're found in butter and junk food mainly.

That is ridiculous! A really bad attitude to show towards her children in my opinion. If she brings up her children with this view on food, they will start to get very conscious when they are older over what they eat and probably become the "health conscious Size 0" kind of people that we are starting to see in society.

I think I lost about 1kg now so I am feeling proud and motivated to do more. Problem is I am still eating like normal, if anything eating more sweets which is bad, I feel guilty but not guilty enough to stop eating them  Need to cut down on that and go back to eating healthier foods WHILE continuing with the daily exercise lol.

I am thinking of increasing it as 6st 6lb is just before by BMI is 18.5 (anything below 18.5 is considered unhealthy e.g. underweight).. And I don't want to be anywhere near underweight/aneroxic tbh. If I look good in clothes and my weight is well above the target I will be happy to stop above that. Main thing is the exercise, I barely do any so I need to maintain that haha..

I found a great low fat focacchia (sp) bread - 450g brown strong bread flour, 300 ml water. Pinch of salt, pepper, yeast (I use a 7g packet). When you've mixed/rolled out the dough put it on an oven tray (don't forget the greaseproof paper :p) and spread the top with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Forget about leaving it to rise that doesn't work, it does it in the oven. :p Gas mark 5/220oC for 20-25 minutes.

Oh yeah and its flatbread so its not that high but it does fill a whole oven tray! I have to use the extra large one.

Its so easy though only takes about 10 minutes to make.

ok, haven't gone on here for a while as I have just started a new diet... I was 67.5(over 10 and half stone) Kilo 6 weeks ago and I am now 63.9 , just 10 stone (nearly 4 kgs down)..By the end of the 12 week diet I should have reached 59-60kg (9 and half stone)... I am really really pleased with this diet.
Found it on a german website and using it with my health coach on the DS.. I never seen a diet like this.. I makes you eat so much carbs and fat a day.. one day I HAD to eat chips to bring up my fat count, no other diet would have expected me to do that.
Basically is it designed by Germany nutritions and from my answers to questions it was found I wasn't eating enough fat so all my carbs were not turning to energy but storing fat instead.. I have tried loads of diet and diet pills but never found one that works like this.

Wish me lucky that I reach my goal of 60kg in the next 6 weeks and eventually I hope to be 57kg (just under 9 stone) by Christmas..

lost another 1/2 kilo this week... so it is going well.. I am getting past my zone (I haven't been below 10 stone since I had Ben) but I am bang on that now...

Kath and Kirsty, unfortunately it is not available in English.. I am lucky I have a German partner... My sister who had never lost weight on ANY diet has lost 5lb in over 4 weeks.. she is delighted with it...

Thank you for posting this,Siobhan, will have a go at this too, but I find it all a little confusing at the moment. Will ask a German colleague to help out with bits I am not sure about. Hopefully, it will work for me the way it has for you.

My 12 week program is nearly up and I have gone from 67.5 kilo to 61kg.. I am totally amazed at the results.. I am going to keep going as I would like to get down to 57kg and I now know it is an achievable result!! On the same site is a maintainence plan which I will follow after I hit my target (expect to hit in on the 23rd November).

you don't need to do one hour every day.. I just walk around during day and I am only starting to do dance aerobics and I have lost a lot... I had same issue as you.. was eating my carb allowance by lunch time :rotfl:

That's were i think I'm going wrong. I have ceral in the morning and usually a sandwich or pasta/salad for lunch. I have tried swaping white bread for brown, but how much carbs should I be eating a day or week.

Perdita
30-09-2009, 12:47
You would need the plan (which is in German). You get 17 triangles per day for carbs and 12 circles for fat. Then it is a bit like WeightWatchers, you have a food plan telling you how many triangles or circles the particular food has. Example: A portion of Special K Black Berry (30g) has 3 triangles and 1 circle, you then need to add one more triangle for 1 glass (200g) of skimmed or semi-skimmed milk and one triangle and 2 circles for full fat milk. Throughout the day you mark off everything you eat and drink and Siobhan has proven that it works very well. :)

to maintain weight you should be eating around 240gr of Carbs per day but you should also be eaten 70gr of fat.. If you don't eat both of them that's when weight is gained..
As Perdy says, on this diet you eat half your allocation of carbs and fats per day but you can eat as much protein and fiber as you wish (read the back of packages for number of carbs).. For example, you can eat egg whites (not the yoke) and chicken (minus skin) and you don't cross of any symbols on this diet.. all protein..

Well I'm starting a keep-fit/weight loss regime with one of the Health and fitness students. It's part of their course. They were looking for volunteers so I signed up. I have a lovely 16 year old boy named Joshua who has to design a fitness programme for me andI have to stick to it for 6 weeks to begin with. Bless his little heart he's not got a hope in hell shifting the fat of my belly and ass. I've not had my fitness test yet. Trin if you hear sirens over the next few days you'll know it's the ambulance for me. I'll let you know how I get on. My target is to loose 2 stone.

Kirsty :]

Oohh good luck Kath, you can do it! :)

Also, isn't it bad to cut things out of your diet completely? I thought little bits of everything was needed to keep healthy... just to not go overboard?

Perdita
05-11-2009, 06:28
You are right, Kirsty, to lose weight and keep it off you need a balanced diet of everything, fat, carbs and protein. And of course the dreaded word (for me, anyway :)): exercise :(

Siobhan
05-11-2009, 09:41
Perdy.. you can be amazed what a little exercise can be... I am only starting doing proper exercise (2 dance classes a week) prior to that I was losing weight just be eating right and walking.. get off the bus a stop earlier, park your car a bit further from the shops etc... very simple things. I got a pedometer and it started with 6000 steps a day and towards the end was up to 10,000 steps... I don't do much at work (chained to my desk mostly) but just have the pedometer I was aware I should walk more

Perdita
05-11-2009, 09:47
I do most of what you suggest, apart from getting off the bus earlier .. I live in a littile village and need the car to get to work, else I would never make it on time, because the bus service is rare. I have a nordic walker exercise machine at home and use it at times, just not as often as I should. I am awake at between 4 and 5 in the morning (OH is a snorer :crying: ) and get home from work at 5 pm, then doing tea/washing/ironing... too tired to exercise. Belly dancing once a week, have brought the music cd to work to see if I can motivate myself to practice in my lunch break :)

Siobhan
05-11-2009, 09:50
Park your car in the furthest car park space, use stairs instead of lifts, get up and walk around the office.. little things.. I don't have much time for exercise either and I would never have the motivation to go to a gym or work at home...

I think you need to persevere with abs crunchies, start with a few and carry on on a daily basis, adding just one or two a day. Like everything, the more you practice, the better you get :) (now I just have to do as I preach  )

If you have lots of fat on top of your abs muscles, it doesn't matter how many crunches you do, you won't get a flat belly.

Burn it off through exercise and dieting. Everybody is different in where they store excess fat and where it's used up first and it's also different from men to women.

Personally, whenever I gain weight it goes straight on my boobs but comes off my hips first.

Siobhan
09-11-2009, 16:49
lucky you.. I lose it on my boobs and gain on thighs, tum and bum.
I have to say I have lost nearly 2 stone and 10cm of my waist line and I have been exercising.. I have now saggy belly... (it is not huge but I would feel better if it was gone)

Siobhan
09-11-2009, 16:53
I feel like that a lot but I have to keep reminding myself of how far I have come instead of how far I have to go. I have to get a new wardrobe as my clothes are too big for me, that is what keeps me going.. I know I have a wobbly belly but it is a lot less than 6 months ago.. I look at photos of summer and smile at how much more of a woman I look instead of thinking "oh my god, I have to lose more weight".. that will come eventually and I do dancing which I love and I know it will help me

But being skinny isn't always good, my friend is a size 6 and she's got no boobs, no hips, finds it hard to find clothes that fit. I have curves. I could do with losing a stone, but to be honest, I'd rather keep eating the odd chocolate/takeaway and eat three meals (and snack!) in the day rather than do diets and lose a bit of weight. Because I eat relatively healthily, I stay the same weight.

It is a fact that we see ourselves bigger than we actually are. Gok Wan (?) who does the How To Look Good Naked shows it on the programme all the time. The women put themselves in front a cardboard cut-out with the figure they think they have and in fact they need to go to cut-outs of figures about 2 to 3 sizes smaller. And you are at an age where you will slim down a bit, I was chubby at 15 but lost a lot of weight naturally, without any dieting or exercise when I turned 17. What do you think are your best features?

I would so like to have your legs, mine are short and stumpy. I would love to be tall and lanky. I would also like wavy hair, not the thin, flat hair that I have. My brother has wavy hair and wants straight, thin hair. Jordan, most people want to look different to the way they do, especially us ladies, because all the adverts have skinny, attractive women on tv or magazines/newspapers. Truth is, most are air brushed to make them look that way. If you see them in real life, they do not look anything like they do in the adverts. And they often also confess to not being happy with their looks once the make up and trendy clothes are gone. I am sure you are a very attractive young lady, I wish you could believe that yourself :)

I am trying to lose weight before I go on holiday ( on 7th June).
My diet is not working well at all.
It started off okay.. I was eating like 1000 calories max, usually less, like 600.. but now I am back to eating the usual.
I do eat healthy on a regular basis, but with very unhealthy things thrown in.. how can I get willpower to stick to my diet? My mum isn't helping much ha!

Also, when I get paid next week, I am going to start going to the gym, what's the best machines to use to lose belly weight?

Someone in work said that eating then exercising like running after will help lose weight.. I can't run.. at all.. so will walking or biking be just as effective???

Advice pleaseeeee. I got a month and a bit to lose a bit of weight!!! Not going to happen is it?

1000 cl a day is very little , 600 just not enough Crazy:eek: You don't eat enough, that is why you are not losing weight, you body stores everything because it thinks there is a famine and it needs to reserve everything. Your body is like an engine, without fuel it will not work

Siobhan
22-04-2010, 09:19
I agree with Perdy.. you need at least 1200 calories per day just to get your body functions working.. after that it is needed to replace what you used up on exercise.. you need to eat more or your body won't have enough fuel to function normally

Perdita
22-04-2010, 09:24
And don't go running/walkingbiking or any exercise straight after eating, or else you will feel sick, probably get stomach cramps etc. Leave at least one hour or 1 1/2 hours after eating before doing any exercise, Crazy. I guess doing abdominal crunches will tone your belly but they are killers, I hate doing them lol.

Siobhan

CrazyLea

I'll try eating more. By the time I get home though and eat there's no time to wait an hour :(
If I eat after biking/walking/guymming will that be betteR?
And also how do you do these crunches?

Abigail
22-04-2010, 22:34
You definitely need to eat more! You're body is going into starvation mode and storing food as fat instead of using it for energy. You should be eating at least 1200 calories a day, more if you're doing lots of physical activity.

Chrunches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunch_(exercise)) will only work if you get rid of the fat lying on top of the abs. You can have perfectly toned abs but you won't be able to show them off if you've not lost the weight.

You should do some cardio work if you want to burn fat. Better still, when you enrol at a gym, get an exercise plan drawn up of what you need to do to lose weight.

Perdita
23-04-2010, 09:07
Definitely eat after exercising rather than immediately before. Is there a trial at a gym near you where somebody can show you how to do crunches safely? Basically, make sure your lower back is always on the floor, lift your upper body up and down, support the back of your head with your hands.

Okay so I feel like 'this is it' and I WILL lose weight this time! I think I have got about a whole month to kill so decided I might as well try and shed some weight! In order to stay healthy and in the lower end of the healthy BMI range (I am on the higher end of the healthy range) I need to lose just under 30lb (14kg)!

I have just ordered Jillian Michaels (the lady from Biggest Loser USA) 30 Day shred which should be with me next week! It's my first ever workout DVD so I am excited! :D Been reading through lots of reviews and it seems if you stick with it you will lose plenty! Some say that they haven't lost much weight but have lost lots of inches (weight of muscles etc.) so I am not going to be too into the weight side of things!
I have also decided that I won't be eating any sweet/chocolate for the next month - I managed a whole week before so I feel I can do it :)

Will be documenting my process and hope all goes well!

Spicy, sounds like you have a plan!!! I have just bought 30 Minutes Stretch And Tone by Sande Urquart, had the video but my player is bust and too expensive to repair, cheaper to get the DVD on eBay. Very good exercise DVD for the initially unfit, I look forward to starting again once this very hot spell here is over, would kill me doing exercise in this humidity and heat. Good luck Spicy, hope it works for you :)

I could do with one of those. :p My sister gave us the wii fit before she sells it. I'm a master on the hula hoops and ski slalom.

Been working for my dad gardening, I have biceps now.. hahahaha. I don't think its a good look for a woman. Though that's what you get for hauling bins and raking leaves.

I've started on Slimming World today. I had 28g of muesli for breakfast (which just about covered the bottom of the bowl ) with some milk and a coffee. I'm still a bit confuddled with the different types of food and how eating as much free food as one likes can aid weight loss

I also don't have a set of scales so I guess it will be a visual thing and I'll hang the bunting out when I can get back into my jeans. I think I need to go shopping for lots of fruit and veg and free food.

Siobhan
01-11-2010, 10:23
Abigail.. that shocked me too when I started to weigh food, how little 28grs of cereal was... it is like a spoonful.. I thought I was eating what was specified but obviously it was double or triple the amount..

Good luck with your weight loss and I would advise to buy a scales for measuring

Abigail
01-11-2010, 10:54
I have some digital food scales but not people weighing scales, should have made that clearer. I wonder if the chemist has some people scales that I could use or get weighed at the doctors :hmm:

I've just had a brisk 15min walk around the park, with a less brisk five mins walk there and back, so 25mins in total. I reckon I can do that every day :) It was really good to get out and see all the autumn colours. Its still warm enough to go out without a coat at the moment.

Perhaps not the best time to start a diet :ninja: Its my birthday today so that means cake, alcohol and everything else that's bad. Any tips for getting through it without ruining myself?

I was really naughty last night :( Had a really good day, ate healthily and such. In the evening my housemate brought me some post, which was a box of chocolates from my Granny. I resisted opening them for a few hours then broke and ate one. About half an hour later I ate half the box :crying: I just couldn't resist them. Luckily its only a small box and I'm going to do an extra ten mins of walking today, which probably won't do anything but it'll help me conscience.

Siobhan
02-11-2010, 10:10
I have one thing to suggest.. don't look at anything like it is bad or forbidden as it will make you crave it more.. have what you like but in moderation and make sure you are not going over 2000 cals per day.. and never starve yourself if you have over indulged the day before, it makes it worse.. Fall of the diet wagon but get back on next day as a new start and don't think that you have to eat less the next day to make up for your over eating.. that is really bad for you.
Oh and weight yourself every week. that way you can keep track even after you have lost weight to make sure it is not creeping back on you.. I went from 68KG to 57KG from July last year to December.. I have only put back on 2kg over the past 11 months so I think I am doing well

Has anyone ever had any experience with Diet pills? I know they don't work instantly and you have to eat a balanced diet as well as taking the pills, but I just really need to look for alternatives, ever since I've stopped dancing I can feel it all creeping back on :( my metabolism is definately slowing down much more than I'd like! x

Perdita
02-11-2010, 21:15
Kirsty, don't waste your money and become ill, I tried them once and they made me ill, you will only lose weight if you use up more calories than you take in, that means eat less calories and/or burn more than you eat. Diet pills only work for those that sell them to line their wallets, not for you to lose weight. Adopt a healthy diet with fresh fruit and vegetables and few sugary drinks and alcohol and you will be ok :)

Walk.. for the first 12 weeks when I lost the weight I didn't go to gym or use dVD or dance classes.. I walked.. got of the bus a stop earlier, climb stairs instead of using lift.. it makes a difference.. I went back to my dance class cause I love it and it helped to tone me.

recommend my health coach on DS.. it forces you to walk and do "exercise" (I put in quote cause one of them was stand up and sit down 10 times)

I went for an induction at the gym today with my friend :D
It was good, I enjoyed it, I look forward to going properly.

My heart rate was really high though. I went on one of those sit down bikes, and literally peddaled like twice and it was 140..
The assessor said it could have been because I was anxious.. I hope so.
It peaked on the treadmill at 194.. and I wasn't even out of breath.

Is this something to worry about, should I get it checked out?? :s

Well the few pounds I lost and the toned up muscles I had have gone pear shaped thanks to the endless boxes of chocolates and bottles of wine I got at christmas, plus I haven't been to the gym since Novemember thanks to the flamming snow. With having to walk 2 miles to work and back every day. I was in no fit state to go to the gym at lunch-time. Since being back at work the gym has been closed at a new building has been built and that doesn't open until 31 January. Never mind I will be back with my badmington racket. also have to find a new Zumba class the class that I went to at work on a Wednesday eveing has moved to a new location about 4 miles away becuse of the cost of hire.

You are proabably gaining muscle (which is heavier than fat) for you it is probably best to measure yourself (how many inches you lost) would give a better indication of what you are losing

That was like me. I was going to a zumba class at the college were I work, but I stopped in November because of the snow the classes were cancelled, then in January the college put their hire fee's up so Vanessa the instructor moved the class to a school 4 miles away. It's a bit of a trek without a car. But one of the girls who works in the catering she goes and she was telling me that Vanessa is planning to come back to the college on a Tuesday night for a Zumba toning class and a zumba class on a Thursday at the school round the corner from the college so hopefully I'll get back into it soon.

That is what the diet I am on concentrates on Carb/fat balance.... and it works... I don't count calories or have point.. just make sure that I take in the required carbs/fats.. I have been off the diet for a while (reached a plateau) and I have maintained all the weight I lost for past 2 months.. not gain no loss...

I'm actually doing P90x and on phase one its 50% protein, 30% carbs and 20% fat. Down by two stones and i can see parts of my six pack already.
Key thing though is that my body fat percentage had reduced by 4% and muscle percentage is up

Protein is very much needed for building muscle.. skinless chicken, egg whites, turkey.. I eat them regular as it doesn't count towards my fat or carb count and just by adding some salad stuff with it, it become a really good and filling lunch.. I just need to get back into my exercise.. I think all above the medications, supplements, steroids or diet plan, the strong will power has the
actual worth as far as the weight loss it concerned. But personally, I consider it not necessary it to reduce fat
if you have got it. Rather, feel yourself smart and be regular in cardio exercises.Clarkston Group Fitness (http://myvipfitness.com/clarkston-gyms-focus-on-differentiation/)
