I'm in the same boat, not sure if I should have chosen Geography or not. There's nothing else to take though, and I wasn't too sure about taking Media, but I only initially wanted to do History and Business and everything else I'd want to do is either only done at A level or compulsory.
Geograpghy GCSE i thought was really good, and i wasnt going to take but i enjoyed it so much i took it on for AS level.

I took history and geography and I have to say after a year I'm really pleased with my options but I'm battling my geography coursework at the minute. Cos our school is only small we dont even teach a lot of the option lessons, for example my school doesnt do media or drama. Also its a catholic school so lots of subjects are compulsary that are optional in most other schools, for example we have to take french and we have to take RE

Where do I start with my GCSEs? The set 1/2 mix for Science is a disaster. I'm at the top end of it as I got a 7 in my SAT but the set 2 people are like "What's going on?" So we're spending ages and ages going over and over the same thing, I'm never picked to answer the questions and we have two modules in November.
Maths, hate the teacher. He's spent at least two lessons teaching us stuff that he says will not come up on the exam. Nonetheless, he expects us to know everything about everything.
English. Teacher is ok, gave us a GCSE final exam paper on thew seconed day back.
History and Business are great. Don't like my Business teacher or class though.
Media and Geography are the subjects I'm made to feel that I'm no good at and considering dropping.
RE - Got rid of the nightmare teacher (Woooooooooooooooooooo!)
Not liking thgew sound of the science assessed practicals though, they're the reason that I wasn't going to take an A Level in biology, physics or chemistry.

We had an English mock on the second day of term and got the results today. It was higher paper and I got one mark off a C and I'm not happy. I got 22/27 on the writing section and we were rushed on the reading as the lesson started late and I couldn't do all of the questions as I ran out of time. I got 8/27 on that so I'm not happy when I'm supposed to be at the top of the set and about 5 people that I know of got C's.
Dont worry about it, at the end of the day its only a mock , and the idea is thats what you improve on. Id be a complet failure if we went on our Mock resuts.
I thought the idea was that you get 2 grades higher but I wouldn't be happy with a B.

It's the same situation as me Kim, i am in top set for English and i was getting Ds at the start of Year 10, the only reason why your getting low marks is that you've just started the English GCSE course. They will probably expect you to get a high mark at the end of the whole course when you get your results next year, the just expect you to improve to get a better mark. I've jumped up from a D to a B. It's just all about improving, i was in the same situation. :)
Glad to know that it can't just be me that feels stupid after getting a D. I also should be getting extra time so fingers crossed for me as the expectations are high.

I'm only in year 10, but it's going well apart from my English speaking and listening. I have two science modules on the 22nd, so I'm about to go into a revision frenzy for those. I totally messed up my first formal assessment, but my teacher; for some reason; wrote that 'I recovered strongly,' in her notes. I have until January to threat over my monologue. Doing well in my end of unit exams, 1 A* and 2 A's so far. Just got my grade back for my original writing and I wasn't that happy because it was more or less controlled, and I got 2 marks off an A. I'm kicking myself that I actually knew I'd done things wrong after I handed it in, because I could concentrate. Good job we get to repeat that piece of coursework.

Wow, Dave! I don't know how anyone gets even one A* in French; if I was taking it I would be predicted either a C or D. I was never that good at French, and they messed my levels up so I don't really know what I got.

I'm just going to have to sign out and risk it at this rate. I need to revise loads as I get really nervous in exams, my target grade is an A, and I need to get as high as I can to minimise the effect of controlled coursework; I know I'm going to mess it up. ooo me too and i have my last one this month, so how have you done on them so far.
I've got a C on them so far, but I'm one mark off a B so I'm re-sitting them in November, don't know if I'll do any better though, they were so hard last time! :o
If you're doing dual award the first year (year 10) exams are all multiple choice and you choose which level (higher or foundation) you do when you get into the exam.
Its easier to get a C on higher than it is on foundation, you need something like 80% to get a C on foundation and around 20% I think to get a C on higher (don't quote me on those exact figures but it is a lot lower on higher).
Year 11 exams are much harder, 2 90min papers that have some really long questions in. If you do well in year 10 and on your coursework I shouldn't worry too much about the final exams, just revise the bits you're not sure on more.
Another thing, if you're a few marks off the next grade on a modular exam theres no point in resitting it as the scores are agregated and then averaged. So if you did very well in one module (say a few marks off an A*) but rubbish in another (just over a C) and the rest were fairly consistant, the high and low score will even out when its averaged (they kinda cancel each other out and you get a mark somewhere in the middle) if you get my drift, can't really explain what I'm trying to say lol.
I did my finals in june this year, I don't know if any of this has changed much. I resat a couple of my modulas because I was ill when I took them the first time and I don't think it made much difference to my overall grade.

Neither have we. We have two modules on that day, one after the other. We have this massive text book though.
I'm doing them again this year. I did them last year and got appalling grades (two D's). I simply didn't revise so it was my own fault. I started revising for the re-sits last week. I'm very nervous about the whole GCSE thing, but I just have to revise hard and try my best, and try not to panic. lol - I get incredibly nervous.
The thing that annoys me more is the coursework. I was furious to hear that it will be axed in the next few years - I think it's unfair. I'd find it much easier if I just had to concentrate on my exams rather than worrying about coursework deadlines. I realise it's essential in some subjects like ICT and Ebnglish, but in other subjects like Maths it just isn't needed - it's absolutely pointless. I fear that the Maths coursework will drag my grade down. I'm, currently on a B for the two exams I did last year, but I'm not hopeful about the exams.
Wow, I can't believe I just posted that. Anwyay. :rotfl:

I've did my 1st one last month, it was a nightmare. Our teacher tried to help us and got it all wrong  Apparently the next ones really, I'm dreading it :( I haven't got it till January though.
Next week we are finishing our first peice of maths coursework and this term we are doing our second.
We've started ours, it's a nightmare. My teacher is more or less trying to force us into doing a certain hypothesis; so he can mark us down, in my opinion. It took ages to even get a sample as he was making us share the laptop, and then I had to go and do mine at home! I've been doing some graphs and tables for it today; they took ages! Now I have to do my Geography coursework zzz, so much for not having loads of coursework to do at the same time!
awww i love my geography coursework, i just find it easy to right about and explain cos its more or less just like our 1st piece
I got left on the coach because of my disability, and they never gave me the notes from, or explained the work that they did, at the places I didn't get to go to. So I'm almost guessing on parts of it.

I am in year 10 now. I took my graphics GCSE early (last year) and I'm taking that again this year as an extra. I chose French, art, geography and history for my options.
We started our English/English Lit. course at the end of last year, and we started our first piece of coursework then (an autobiography), which we've just completed. It was annoying, though, 'cause we had to write it out (it was one of our three written pieces of work), but it was such a pain in the tooshie. Mine was eight pages long! Eight bloody pages!
We've just started our second piece, which is an essay about the dramatic techniques used in J.B. Priestley's play, 'An Inspector Calls'. That is REALLY annoying, I'm finding it so hard, I just can't get into the flow of it for some reason. I'm so behind. I can tell already that it's gonna be VERY long! At least we can type this one out, though.
As for art, since every piece of work we do is coursework, we've done a lot. We had to fill in a whole book with drawings and stuff stuck in over the summer holidays, which was hard 'cause I don't do much in my hols! Just relax! We've done about half of another book since then, stuff every lesson, and a piece of homework is set every week. All of it counts.
We've just done our first piece of coursework in French, which was a letter about our school - the rules, lessons, uniform, building, a trip and our future plans. That was really easy, since it's basically just copying out the work we had in our books from the few weeks before. The only hard part is fitting it into 200 words! I've just gotta copy it out tomorrow (after school ), and then it's done.
We haven't done any other coursework.
I found german coursework easy, we just copied the phrases out of the text book. Came out with an A* for my coursework (I did stick a few of my own phrases in there). All my courseworks ran over the minimum of 300 words - usually to 500 to get all my tenses etc in.
An Inspector Calls is possibly the worst English coursework. We had to watch the video of it and, my god, it was boring. I can't remember what my coursework was on but it was pretty boring.
Do you still have to do maths coursework? I know that it was getting scrapped but I dunno when. Ours wasn't that bad actually. We did a GCSE in Maths and and another in Statistics. The coursework we did for maths we used for stats so that cut down on the load.

i quite like writing about An Inspector Calls as its all there in the text, but i agree the video was pritty boring
and i think we are still doing maths coursework
It's getting scrapped next year.
I'm really worried about the science modules now; we've been told we can't choose to resit, the teacher does that. I'm the type to get so nervous in the exam that I can't think straight.
Your teacher should discuss it with you if you need to resit it.
I did the AQA modular exams, they were all multiple choice so even if you get stressed you still have a 1/4 chance of getting the right answer.
It's getting scrapped next year.

They're only module exams. If you failed one, then its not exactly the end of the world. You seem to be putting a lot of pressure onto yourself to do well in something which you are bound to do well in. If you fail, then it doesn't matter. And if you pass, then all the better!
The exams i did in July were so much better then i thought they were going to be. The teachers just try to force you to do well- just ignore them! :D

Yeah, mit French was 310 words to start with (when I was trying to keep it short), but it can't be very many more than 200 words - about 225 words at the very most. But the teacher even said to me that there was no logical way to cut it down, 'cause it was all relevant, so I had to have just over 250 in the end. I don't know what my grade was.
And I hate 'An Inspector Calls'. I wouldn't say it was all there in the text, as there is a lot of analysing to be done, but I'm just a perfectionist.. :D I dread to think what my grade will be.
My autobiography was pretty hard to write, especially since I was writing about something sad, but I got there in the end. With this, I just can't seem to get my brain into gear.

Those grids they give you in the science modular exams are like the worst things ever. There's so many circles all over the place; in half an hour I just fell to pieces. I find it hard to coordinate things, so I wish you could just write out the answer you think it is, instead of trying to find the correct box! After getting the marking screwed up, it's obvious I'm going to end up losing marks because of the silly things. I did the wrong box in both a few times, so I'm really annoyed as I actually knew the answers. I got a B and a C; considering I got a 7 in my SAT I'm not hopeful that I'll do well next week

 So when you say modular exam do you mean the exams with the confusing boxes that you have to circle to answer?
No it's not that, it's like normal exam questions based around a subject we have studied in biology, chemistry and physics.
And Squillyfyer, i noticed that too, i was collecting data and we had to ask questionnaires and people weren't all that nice!

No i am in Year 11 now, we have science module exams, core and general. We did core last year and i got 3 cs and this year we're doing general and we have 3 topics to do in Chemistry, Physics and Biology and we have 3 module exams testing us on each topic we do in each subject, if that makes sense.

I'm very bored after doing Biology revision for four hours, and I now have a repetitive strain injury as a souvenier lol! I'm soooo worried about my modules as if I get a B, I wont be allowed a resit as that is my predicted grade off of my CATs. This woman came in today talking about exam regulations and when she left, she said 'see you wednesday morning, guys,' as if we're going there for some sort of social occasion. :rotfl:

same here and our schools getting tight on study leave full stop
I'm not sure if we are gonna have any study leave for our mocks, since I'm only in year 10, but while we're on the subject of Christmas.. :D
WE'VE ONLY GOT JUST OVER 2 WEEKS! I know this is not exactly the right subject, but I'm just so annoyed. And, because I'm going on holiday for two weeks over Xmas, by the time I've got back and recovered from the jet lag, we'll have to go back to school again!
And also, sorry to go off the subject AGAIN, but does anyone else have to go these bloody Review Day things..? Instead of Parent's Evenings where we see the teachers of all of our subjects, we have to see our Tutors, who don't really know much anyway, in the morning for ten minutes, and then go home. Which is a pain, 'cause not only do we have to wear uniform - FOR 10 MINUTES! - but not all parents can get time off in the morning. My dad likes seeing how I'm getting on, but he can't come in the mornings 'cause he can't change his shifts that dramatically. And then, even though most people I know had their parents complain, they said in the newsletter, "due to the success of our last Review Day, we're going to have another". SUCCESS?! Everyone complained!
Lol that's totally wrong. I say the teachers can't be bothered. In our parents evening all of the teachers just said "No, I can't do any appointments after 7; I'm going to the stained glass window painting," even if someone's parents couldn't make an earlier time. And they say parents evenings are important to GCSEs!
same here and our schools getting tight on study leave full stop
When we had study leave there were only select few allowed to go. We were split into three bands for GCSE, Blue being high achievers, yellow then green at the bottom. Green band got to go before easter (about 6 weeks before us!) and we (blue) got study leave 2 weeks before exams started. Everyone else had to stay plus those who hadn't completed coursework or who were predicted low grades even though they were in the top group. Everyone complained but there wasn't much we could do.

Yeh we get study leave for our mocks to see if we can be trusted to have study leave for our proper exams, because for the past 5 years our school has had study leave for mocks but then people just went to the cinema and shopping so they didnt have study leave for the actual exams, but im hoping our year can actually do something right for once!

We have a science exam tomorrow, on Human Biology and Products from Rocks, it is worth TWENTY FIVE PERCENT of the overall grade!
I am really not happy with the way this has been sprung on us.
We have been given no revision material, all I've done is a few of the tests on BBC Bitesize, that is the only thing that I can do, we haven't been given any books, sheets - nothing.
This is ridiculous.
I had that. I have a massive text book, but that doesn't seem to be much use. I spent ages trying to learn things out of it, and hardly any of it came up in the exam. Human biology was the worst thing ever; there were questions that we hadn't even done anything about.

I have got SO much art to do, and I've still got that poxy 'An Inspector Calls' essay to do. The teacher said that if we have to we can just put half of it in the folder, if we don't have time to finish it all, but I'm not putting in a half-finished essay!

But, look on the bright side, I have finally finished the R.E that I was supposed to give in like.. :hmm:.. 3 months ago... :D

Grrrr. I'm so fed up. I have to type up my English Monologue by Monday, seeing as the teacher wants to look at them and mine has scribbles all over it. I have to have 3 cycles of handling data done on my Maths coursework by Monday, and I've barely started because I'm rubbish at drawing graphs as a result of my disability. And we have a problem of the term for homework from Maths as well! Business coursework also to be done by Monday, RE homework by Tuesday, along with revision for an assessed practical test on Friday. We also have the biggest piece of Media coursework ever
And when you've got through the mountain of coursework, the revision for exams starts. Stressful times, don't let it get on top of you, talk to your teachers, they really can help with the stress and worry.

The teacher made me give it in yesterday, which I didn't wanna do 'cause then she'd be able to see how little I've done, but I made a deal with her today that I would finish a page if she let me take it home. AND I was true to my word! :D I'm gonna have to give it in tomorrow, though. :(
It wasn't that much, it was a transcription of a Frida Kahlo still life, I'd done the main part of the picture (coloured in with oil pastels), I just needed to colour in the background, but still - it's progress.. :o
But my brother annoyed me by telling me to just get on with my 'stupid drawing' when I told him to shut up with his commentary of I'm a Celeb. Just because it's not something of his the selfish git thinks its not important! Sometimes I could gladly throttle him.
And I've still got that 'An Inspector Calls' Essay to do.
But, apart from that, every thing's rosy. :D
Does anyone else have their controlled coursework exam tomorrow? I'm sort of dreading it, but not as much as the modules. Really don't think I'll finish it; I'm not allowed extra time, so I just get rest breaks. :( I can't believe I'll have half a science GCSE by this time tomorrow.

Yeah, but that's the year 10 one. We have to do another Science GCSE in year 11. I think it's stupid that you have a whole GCSE by the end of year 10, but the school believes that it is good because you can get different grades in them

My mocks started on Monday, and I've had a science one so far. I'm kind of dreading getting it back, I don't think I did brilliantly. I've got English and Geography Paper 1 tomorrow, which I think will be ok.
Any chance of some history tips Bad Wolf? I've got my first History mock this week, its about the American West. Have you got any tips on how to answer the questions properly? My teacher hasn't really said much about how to answer detailed questions, and I'm hoping for a good mark, so if you've got any tips that would be great :)

Think I break up on the 20th and go back on the 3rd..
GCSE's.. boy I didn't think c/w was going to be this much all in one go..
I had 1000 word Media essay to write..
I had a week to research Acrylamide for Science.. and I need to write 800 word essay in 2 lessons (2 hours) next week..
I got an English essay to write on the last week before we break up or maybe next week..

I've had quite a lot of coursework as well.
I had my Maths Stats about 2 weeks ago, at the same time as my Media and a section of my Business. The Media was more like 5 pieces though. Then I had to do my Science, which was an assessed practical. So we had an exam at the end of that. They may as well not call it controlled coursework as not everyone did it at the same time, and loads of people were making noise outside when we were doing it. I have my Shakespeare soon, which is 5% of English and 10 of English Literature.

I got my grade for my first piece of French coursework today, which I'm really happy with.
STILL need to do that stupid 'An Inspector Calls' Essay, and we've just started reading Romeo and Juliet, so we'll probably get another piece of coursework after Christmas.
And I've just started my optional Graphics coursework, which wouldn't be that bad but the teacher is a bit forgetful, so she talks about what I need to do, then the next day she tells me again, then the next day, then the next day..
My art teacher took in our books the other day, to do our reports, so I dread to think what she's put about my homework. And I don't want my parents to know that I've not been doing it properly, because my Mum's already threatening to make me do it all on a Friday night, 'cause she keeps catching me doing it at 11 O' Clock on Sunday night.. :o
And, today my drink leaked all over my books, and my English book is practically ruined. :crying:
Next Thursday is our last day, and then we've got that stupid 10 minute appointment that I was complaining about on Friday. But I don't have to go to it, since I'm off on my hols on Thursday night (my Mum won't even let me miss school on Thursday, can you believe that?!).
I somehow managed to finish my Christmas shopping tonight, though! :D
Got a B in my Maths mock :) Which i am really proud of which means i am on target to get my A/A* :cheer:
Also have found the final formula in my coursework i just have to write it up now yey!
I got my Geography coursework - one mark off of A*, and was not happy as I was deducted a mark over my diagrams. I want to know how Art ever comes under Geographical Skills.
Well done, Layne; I'm never going to get that; I hate my teacher and his way of teaching, and he hates me.

I got my Drama mock next Monday and Tuesday, i am quite confident. In the last assessment i did for it, i got 36/40 an A..two marks off an A*, so hopefully i will do good in that.

Thank You.
Try recording it then listening to it over that helped me, or just like read the first sentence then the next, so remembering it bit at a time.
For French Oral I think its best to wtite what your going to say then give yourself well about a week or even alot more, it depends when you found out about it, and then just practise every night and every time you should be able to remember more each time.

Anyone got any tips for helping to remember a french oral?
Recording yourself onto tape (or even computer) is one of the best ways. Listening to things repeatedly is one of the most efficient ways of remembering things - just think how many songs you know without actually sitting to learn the words?!
I would also suggest writing what you have to say sentence by sentence (or paragraph by paragraph if you're confident), re-read it out loud, then try to recite the whole thing from memory.
I am assuming you have a presentation to learn and then General Discussion questions?

Another suggestion is to ask your teacher or language assistant (if you're lucky enough to have one) if they would read your your presentation & questions and record it for you so that you can practice your pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and speed.
Good Luck to anyone who has a French Oral exam, my advice, just relax and don't rush, i rushed and panicked and forgot things. Just try and keep calm, if you start getting panicky just stop the tape and breath for a moment.

Not nesessarily. For one, aren't the first few questions of the Higher, the same as the last few in the Foundation? And you need less right in the Higher for a D. Than Foundation for a D. Even if they are slightly harder. So if you really think about it, it does make sense :p
Oh, and why will you be ungraded in Oral Kimbo?

That's why I'm not taking a foreign language. Yes, the last ones on foundation are the same as the first on higher, 'cause I remember getting lost in my chemistry module. It doesn't make sense, Lea.

I was the same as you to be honest. But you'd be surprised at how well you do. (Well for me it was). I spoke quiet and fast, but did fine.
and it does make sense lol. Maybe when you do loadsssssssssss of papers in YR 11, it will make more sense, as the teachers go on about it. (Or at least in my school)
I get confused wtih french grades and stuff, all i know is that i must to do foundation listening as my mock was AWFUL!

Got some more results back from my mocks:
Maths- C
English Literature- A
My english literature paper got marked wrong and the teacher added up my score wrong. I got 54/70 which makes an A! :cheer: I am so happy with that and with my Maths result too!
