Henry Cavill, 27, best known for playing Charles Brandon on Showtime’s The Tudors, has been cast as Clark Kent/Superman in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder, Warner Bros. announced today. “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder says in the release. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” The film is expected to hit theaters in December 2012. David S. Goyer is writing the script, based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Inception, who is among the movie’s producers.

Cavill was at the top of EW’s list of contenders last October. The British actor had been in the running for 2006′s Superman Returns, which ultimately starred Brandon Routh.

Kristen Stewart and Glee star Dianna Agron are reportedly in the running to play Lois Lane in the new Superman movie.

According to What's Playing, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Biel and Malin Akerman, the star of Superman director Zack Snyder's Watchmen, are also in contention to play Clark Kent's Daily Planet colleague and love interest.

A source claimed that Stewart is unlikely to sign up for the superhero picture because she has "too many other juicy offers", while Agron has been "getting in the door" to audition for several high-profile movies.

Anne Hathaway has allegedly been removed from the Lois Lane shortlist after winning the role of Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Erica Durance and Kate Bosworth have previously portrayed Lois Lane on screen.

Henry Cavill will play the title role in Superman, due out in cinemas in December 2012.

Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Adams has been cast to play Lois Lane in Warner's upcoming reboot of the Superman franchise.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Adams was given the news earlier today by the film's director Zack Snyder.

"There was a big, giant search for Lois," Snyder explained. "For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role."

Over the past few months, several actresses had been rumoured to be in contention for the part, including Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Dianna Agron and Rachel McAdams.

"We did a lot of auditioning, but we had this meeting with Amy Adams, and after that I just felt she was perfect for it," Snyder added.

It is currently unknown as to how much screen time Lane will have in the reboot, due to rumours suggesting that Lane won't be the film's female lead. However, Snyder himself described Lane's role as the "linchpin" that holds the story together.

Adams is probably best known for playing the lead role in Disney's live-action fantasy film Enchanted, but also received Academy Award nods for both the indie film Junebug and last year's The Fighter.

The actress will join previously-announced cast members Henry Cavill as Superman, Kevin Costner as Pa Kent and Diane Lane as Ma Kent when the film begins shooting later this year.

Superman: The Man of Steel is expected to be released in December 2012.

Laurence Fishburne will play Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White in Man of Steel, EW has learned exclusively. White has traditionally been a hard-charging, old fashioned newspaperman, who relies on his ace reporters, Clark and Lois, to get the big scoop. Jackie Cooper played White in the Christopher Reeve-era Superman films, and Frank Langella took on the role in director Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns in 2006.
The Superman reboot, produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zack Snyder, stars Henry Cavill as Clark (a.k.a. Superman), Amy Adams as Lois, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. David Goyer (Batman Begins) is penning the script. Man of Steel is due to begin filming this fall, and is slated for release on June 14, 2013.

Zack Snyder's Superman movie Man Of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, will see Clark Kent debating whether to become a superhero when the world comes under attack.

The plot of the Warner Bros film has been revealed online as ComicBookMovie.com reports local people in Vancouver are being invited to audition as extras for the film when it begins shooting there in October.

The synopsis for the much anticipated action movie reads: "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognised and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone's imagination.

"Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question - Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha and Jonathan Kent, Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions.

"But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as 'Superman,' not only to shine as the world's last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves."

The film, currently shooting on location in Chicago, will have an all-star cast including Kevin Costner and Diana Lane as Clark's parents, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet editor Perry White and Russell Crowe as Superman's biological father Jor-El.

Ayelet Zurer has replaced Julia Ormond in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.

The Angels & Demons actress is to portray Superman's Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van in the Warner Bros film, Deadline reports.

Russell Crowe will play her on-screen husband Jor-El, while Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were previously cast as Superman's adoptive parents, the Kents. Zurer is expected to begin filming this week.

Production is already under way on Man of Steel, which stars Henry Cavill as the title character, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod.

Zurer will next appear in Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion with Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline and Dianne Wiest.

Man of Steel arrives in theatres on June 14, 2013.
