Just yesterday, it was reported that Unstoppable director Tony Scott and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides producer Jerry Bruckheimer have signed on to bring Top Gun 2 to the big screen. Today, we've learned from screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie that the film is intended to feature everyone's favorite fighter pilot as its lead character.
According to Vulture, McQuarrie said of the script, which he's currently penning, "There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role." This would indicate that Tom Cruise would be returning to play an older version of the character in the sequel. Of course, there is no word on whether this will actually happen yet.
