EastEnders boss John Yorke has confirmed that there'll be a shock death over the festive period this year.

The show's executive consultant announced the news at an EastEnders press event this week, warning that someone won't make it through the holiday season alive.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, Yorke explained: "I came up with a tagline to guide us through the episodes.

"It was pretty cheesy, but as Mick and Linda were about to renew their wedding vows, I came up with this line: 'Someone old, someone new, someone's dead and someone's blue'. Marketing quite rightly raised their eyebrows! But in my head, the gist of that promise holds true."

The identity of the unlucky character is being kept tightly under wraps, but it's no secret that we'll see the Brannings, Carters and the Beales taking centre stage over Christmas and New Year.

Max Branning has been tipped to get his comeuppance on Christmas Day, while repercussions have also been promised for evil James Willmott-Brown and his fellow Weyland & Co conspirators.

We also know that Mick Carter's involvement with Aidan Maguire and his planned heist will also end in tears, so it seems that any number of characters could find themselves in the firing line over the next couple of weeks.

Teasing Christmas, New Year and further ahead, Yorke added: "Someone old – Mel, Big Mo, Jean, Kat and Masood. Someone new – Hunter Owen, the Ahmed family, and a brand new Slater. Someone's dead – one person. And almost everyone else, as this is EastEnders, is in various shades of blue!"
