Emmerdale aired the devastating aftermath of Rhona Goskirk's rape on Tuesday night (April 25) as she decided not to name Pierce Harris as her attacker.

Rhona was brutally attacked by her new husband just hours after their wedding in last night's episode, sparking a debate among viewers about whether the intense storyline was suitable for the show's 7pm timeslot.

The ITV soap's latest episode saw Rhona left traumatised in the wake of Pierce's attack, especially when he showed no remorse and even tried to justify his behaviour.

Although Rhona tried to play along with Pierce's point of view, she soon managed to trick him by escaping from their house and taking a taxi to the police station – still in her wedding dress.

Rhona told the officers that she'd been raped, but when she heard that her attacker would have to be arrested if she named him, she got cold feet and decided not to take it further for now.

Instead, Rhona agreed to visit a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), where trained professionals gave her a medical examination and gathered together evidence.

As this evidence will be stored, this could prove crucial if Rhona does change her mind and decide to report Pierce.

Zoe Henry, who plays Rhona, had previously warned that Tuesday's episode would feature even more upsetting scenes than Monday's.

Speaking live on This Morning, she explained: "Tonight, in the playing, was harder than what we shot last night in a way, because of how Pierce reacts. You expect an apology or a 'I can't believe I did that', but that doesn't come.

"Rhona feels not that she deserves this, but that she's brought this about. She's seen signs and she's ignored them and she's defended him, and she's pushed her friends away. Here she is on her own and where does she go from here? That's the question, isn't it?"
