About 5 years ago I decided to try and prepare a family tree , all seemed fairly straightforward until I started to research my grandmother who had eleven brothers and sisters. WW I took its toll, and although I identified their parents never managed to progress it further. Found out I had A great uncle who was employed by a distillery north of the border, wrote to them asking if they had any records relating to him ,had a very nice reply which I kind of hoped might have been attached to a complimentary bottle of single malt, (dream on Glen).
Must have spent About £ 150 to this point on a couple of subscription sites and for the past couple of years gave up. However 4 weeks ago received a letter from The Ministry of Defence asking if I would provide a D.N.A. sample to assist in identifying the remains of a particular W.W.I. soldier out of five sets of remains that had been unearthed at a field on the outskirts of Ypres. This I've now done and await results. The M.O.D. Genealogy section have sent me a copy the records they researched which identified me as a relative. The records going back to 1824. So interest rekindled wondered if anyone could advise on a genealogy site ,reasonably priced and any reading material that might assist .

Hi Glen1. I am in Australia, & my wife is quite into genealogy & researching our family trees. Her parents both emigrated to Aust from Scotland in their teens (they met here in Aust) & she has quite a few relatives over in Scotland.

She uses the software program 'Family Tree Maker' - not sure of the cost or if you can buy it in the UK.

She also recommends the following websites:

    www.ancestry.com
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (national records of Scotland website)
    www.findmypast.co.uk
www.familysearch.org (this is the Mormon's site in the US, but she says it is a fantastic site with lots of worldwide information)

You would have to go to each of these sites to find out any costs involved to access the info.

I hope that helps a bit!

My brother, while trying to find our uncle, did a bit of research into our family tree and we found out that way way way along the lines my family (well cousins on my dad's side) are related to Buffalo Bill Cody (my dad's second cousin was a Cody)

Sorry, just caught up with this. It's always exciting to find someone famous in your Family Tree. I have been at this Family History research lark for about 40 years now! As some of you know I have discovered I am related to Barbara Windsor and Peter Sellers and even the Queen (she is the niece of the wife of the 3rd cousin twice removed of the husband of the wife of the great grandson of the wife of my first cousin five times removed. So pretty close really!)

I also discovered that my great great great grandfather fought at Waterloo and I received invitations to all the celebrations going on both there and at St Paul's a couple of years ago plus a commemorative medal.

I have used a few sites but I find Ancestry.com (or Ancestry.co.uk) the best, though the Mormon site is very good as well.

That is funny the Queen connection! Sounds like how my mum explains how i am related to someone.
