I don´t think that there is any sexism going on, Rakesh did not want Kirin to be the father of a baby because at 18 he thinks his son is too young to cope with parenthood, nothing to do with the mother of the baby being white and older
Race was not mentioned but it was implied in South Asian culture interracial relationships are frowned upon. I doubt Rakesh is happy his son had a baby for a middle aged white slapper. I doubt the extended family would be thrilled Kirin has a mixed race baby. The show writers should not ignore race issues. The writing is weird the Sharmas are the only people of colour on the show yet race is rarely mentioned. Eastenders does a better job than Emmerdale dealing with race issues.

VERY surprised the Emmerdale writiers are IGNORING RACE in this storyline, it is clear to me Raklesh is ashamed his son had a baby with an older WHITE WOMAN. I think the Emmerdale writers need to stiop ignoring race. I have heard in South Asian cultures interracial romance is FROWNED UPON and absolutely NOT ACCEPTED. Which is why, I find the interracial babies, and the relationships surprising without the discussion of RACE. I remember watching a documentary where a South Asian woman married a white man in Canada and her family disowned her. So I think the writers ignoring RACE in this storyline is wrong. Why can' t the writers be honest. Rakesh is deeply disappointed his son has a mixed race baby. I think ignoring race is ignoring reality.

I think you find it was ... by you ....

As someone who spends a lot of your time on this forum writing about prejudice and discrimination, do you not consider it extremely hypocritical that you use a such a misogyninistic term in the above paragraph?

Where a South Asian family will have a family member usually a female killed off because she did something that "shamed" the family. The Emmerdale writers seem to be suggesting Rafesh feels ashamed of Kirin for having a mixed baby. It would be NICE if the show went there but Emmerdale tends not to have serious discussions about race unlike say EastEnders. But in the South Asian culture, family honour is a big deal and extremely important. I just hope Kirin and Rakesh have a discussion more about honouring the family ect. South Asian culture is different than white British culture.
ED suggesting that Rakesh is ashamed that the baby is mixed race? Are they? I haven't picked that up at all.
And I really hope ED DOESNT want to have a 'serious discussion' about race. It's not a sociopolitical docudrama.

Seriously, so many viewers take soaps far too seriously. Why does everything have be continually dissected

Kirin Kotecha could take a dramatic parting shot at his dad Rakesh as he departs Emmerdale for good – by indirectly framing him for his own crime!

Viewers were left shocked when Kirin accidentally ran down and killed Tess Harris and Adam Fielding has confirmed that the storyline twist will pave the way for his character’s exit the following week.

But even though Kirin will be gone from the village after disappearing, having left a goodbye note for Vanessa, he is unlikely to be forgotten.

And Pasha Bocarie, who plays Rakesh, has suggested that Rakesh may end up taking the fall for Kirin’s crime – and the likelihood of Kirin coming forward to protect his dad would be pretty minimal after everything that happened with Johnny’s DNA results…

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘Rakesh gets a letter from Kirin. [The police] find his car. Rakesh confesses to Vanessa that he has a letter and Paddy hears this. And gets me into trouble as revenge. Because he knows I’m covering for Kirin. Things go badly wrong after that.’

With Rakesh also set to reveal significant money worries and his wedding to Priya approaching, it’s a stressful time for him. So how will he cope?

Pasha continued: ‘You’re going to see a side of Rakesh that you haven’t seen before. To some people, losing their money is the worst thing that can happen. And what happens with Kirin compounds his misery. Chrissie is a big part in helping him. Jai surprises him.

‘And he ends up confiding in Jimmy, a man who’s had his own money problems. And there’s good chemistry between those two characters. It’s a nice bromance.’

But will the police believe that he had no part to play in Tess’ death?

What's on TV published a video interview with Pasha Bocaire [Rakesh] on Thursday 11 Feb this week.

In the interview, Pasha Bocaire says how his possible fling with Chrissie seems to be over, how he wants to be with Priya, how he loses his job (TW: is this because he tries to help Kirin evade the police?), how his flats are "going down" (TW: is this a planning permission problem, a general drop in housing market prices or criminal damage by arson, etc?).

    The article:

In the aftermath of Kirin's shock hit-and-run accident, in which viewers saw the drunk lad fatally collide with Paddy's secret lover, Tess, there's going to be a killer cover-up!

Emmerdale star Pasha Bocarie, who plays Kirin's lawyer dad Rakesh, revealed he will desperately try to cover his tracks when he finds out what Kirin has done.

"Rakesh doesn't have time to react," says Pasha. "The police are on their way. Rakesh realises he has an opportunity to help his son, who is in need. But what happens between the two characters is quite sad and emotional."

The dramatic storyline will see the departure of the character Kirin, following Emmerdale star Adam Fielding's decision to leave the soap after two years.

"It's sad to see the character go," added Pasha. "But it's also been exciting to play this material. There's been a lot for us to get our teeth stuck into and Adam was happy with the way it was handled."

Rakesh Kotecha's career will lie in tatters on Emmerdale next week as he pays the price for his son Kirin's fatal mistake.

With Kirin nowhere to be found following his abrupt exit from the village, suspicion rightly grows that he must have been responsible for Tess Harris's tragic hit and run death.

As they can't question Kirin, the police focus their attentions on Rakesh instead - convinced that he must be helping his teenage son to evade justice.

When detectives discover that Kirin has sent a letter to Rakesh, they quiz the slippery lawyer about its contents, but he plays dumb by denying having ever received it.

    Rakesh is quizzed by detectives

That may be enough to keep Rakesh from landing himself in trouble with the boys in blue, but his law firm are far more ruthless and put him on indefinite unpaid leave as a punishment.

Pasha Bocarie, who plays Rakesh, revealed: "He's put on unpaid leave because his firm found out about Kirin. His reputation is at stake and there's a rumour he's hiding his son from the law.

"Never in his wildest dreams did he expect his life to be like this. He's usually in control, but right now he has no control. This is definitely a low point for Rakesh, but he's a fighter and a survivor. The audience is going to see a different side to Rakesh."

Few characters are down on their luck for too long in the soap world, and it seems that Rakesh has a chance to rise again when Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) makes contact with him from prison.

Charity tells Rakesh that she wants his help getting all of her money out of the haulage business she owns with Jimmy King. However, rather than get involved with Charity's latest scheming, Rakesh decides to stay on an honourable track - tipping Jimmy off over her intentions and vowing to play her at her own game.

Bocarie added: "There's something about Charity that reminds Rakesh of himself. She plays rough, but she's determined to get what she wants. I think a small part of him does admire her.

"But he's trying to learn from his mistakes and do the right thing for once, and he feels sorry for Jimmy. Even though he desperately needs the money, he decides to do a good thing."
