Emmerdale bosses are planning to delve into the "shocking and upsetting" backstory of feisty Carly Hope.

Gemma Atkinson, who plays Carly, has told Digital Spy that her character will become more prominent on screen from next month - when viewers begin to learn about her past.

The former Hollyoaks and Casualty star has been appearing in the role of Bob's daughter for nearly a year now. Carly had previously been seen in 2001 and 2006 with Rebecca Ryan in the part.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Atkinson revealed: "Carly has got a very big year coming up. When I first joined, there was no backstory to her. It was a case of myself, the writers and the producer coming up with a backstory which is quite shocking and upsetting.

"There's a storyline coming up for her soon. I can't even say who it's with! But it's a storyline where you potentially feel very sorry for Carly, then feel happy for her, and then feel sorry for her again.

"It's a rollercoaster year for Carly, but it's hopefully a subject that people can relate to. People will realise why she was so nasty and angry towards people when she first arrived."

Emmerdale fans have been keeping a close watch on Carly recently, pointing out that she seems to be acting unusually around Vanessa Woodfield's baby son Johnny.

When we asked whether this could be a clue to what's ahead, Atkinson confirmed: "Yes, it is. Carly has got a strong connection with baby Johnny. We can't say how or why yet, or for what reasons. But he does have a tiny bit of involvement in Carly's future. Obviously she lives with Johnny and Vanessa, so they'll play a part in it.

"I think it'll be February time when people realise why she feels the way she does about baby Johnny. Then the storyline will start taking off throughout the year slowly."

Atkinson is currently celebrating after being nominated for the Most Popular Newcomer prize at this year's National Television Awards. The other contenders are EastEnders' Richard Blackwood (Vincent Hubbard), Coronation Street's Shayne Ward (Aidan Connor) and Hollyoaks' Parry Glasspool (Harry Thompson).

When Gemma Atkinson joined Emmerdale last year - and was thoroughly rotten to some much-loved characters in her role as Carly Hope - most viewers probably wanted to send her packing back to Casualty.

Over time, though, Carly has slowly mellowed to become one of the village's nicer characters - helping to earn Gemma a well-deserved nomination for Best Newcomer at next week's National Television Awards. Digital Spy recently caught up with her to chat about the nomination, Carly's future and whether those sexy photoshoots are in the past.

How does it feel to be in the running for Best Newcomer?

"I'm really flattered. To be nominated in itself was amazing. Then when I was told I'd been shortlisted, I was just really grateful that people had taken the time out to vote for me.

"I've had a few people say: 'You're not a newcomer - you've been doing soap for years!' I think people are assuming it's supposed to be a newcomer to soaps, but it's actually about being a new arrival on Emmerdale."

Would you like to think Emmerdale stands a chance of winning the top soap prize this year?

"Definitely. Although if we did win, I couldn't really take much credit for it because I've only been here for the past year. But I've seen the amount of passion that everybody in the building has and I think the show is so deserving. I don't think it gets the credit it deserves.

"It's difficult because people who live in the south all watch and vote for EastEnders. Whereas for people who live up north, it's split between Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, which are all great shows. I do think that goes against us, but we've had such a big year and there's so much more to come."

Carly was so bitchy when she first returned. Did you always know the viewers would warm to her eventually?

"When I read the first few episodes I thought: 'Oh my gosh, there's not one turning point where she can redeem herself!' I was a bit panicked at first, but now pensioners come up to me in Morrisons and say they love Carly. When I first started, they were all telling me to stay away from Bob, so it's nice to have that turnaround.

"Carly is still going to be a bit of a troublemaker in the future, but she won't just be nasty for the sake of it. She's like Cain in the sense that there's always a reason for why she acts the way she does."

Is there any news on Carly possibly getting a new love interest?

"Carly will be getting a new love interest, but we're indecisive at the minute about who it's going to be. It's between three people. We're just trying to work out with Carly's backstory who'd be more suitable and who she'd get on with. Obviously it would have to be someone who treats her a bit better than Ross did! It needs to be someone she can be with long-term, so hopefully someone that Bob will like.

"That's another reason that I think we should win Best Soap. Even with something as little as who should be with Carly, so much thought has gone into it."

Alex Carter was your on-screen brother in your Hollyoaks days as Lisa Hunter, and he was also once Carly's brother on Emmerdale. Would you like them to bring him back?

"Yes, I would love them to bring Alex back. I still keep in touch with him and we've all actually said at work how funny it would be if he came back. We've got Kath [Dow Blyton] as well who plays Harriet. She was our mum in Hollyoaks, so it'd be like a Hunter family reunion if Alex returned. Hopefully even if it's just for a few episodes, they could twist his arm."

Have you ever cheekily tried to persuade Alex to come back?

"I've jokingly said it to him, but I'll leave that to the big bosses!"

Would you like to stick around on the show for a good few years?

"I'd love to. For me the main thing about Emmerdale is that it's just a lovely place to work. Everyone is really welcoming and warm.

"The fact that I can drive home at the end of my work day also makes a huge difference. I had to live in a hotel when I was filming Casualty in Cardiff, so I just never got home. But here I get to come home, see the dogs, see my boyfriend and the family. It's nice to have a work balance with your home life, which I think everyone needs."

Emmerdale's the biggest show you've done so far. Have you noticed an increase in attention?

"To be honest it's not that much different - it's just a different category of people. When I was doing Hollyoaks and lads' mags, it was more teenagers. Now it's the 30+ generation. That's nice, because you can actually have a conversation without someone saying: 'Get this out, get that out'.

"But it's also nice for people who've grown up with me. I've had a few nice messages from people saying that they watched me in Hollyoaks, and now they're watching me in Emmerdale."

Do you still get offers to do the glamour work?

"Yeah, all the time. I'm 31 now, so it's nice to know that I've still got it - in their opinion! But I'm more into the fitness side of things now. If I did any photoshoots now, it would be a fitness one.

"That's not to frown on the glamour modelling at all. I'm extremely grateful for everything that it's given me. I travelled to some amazing places and I absolutely loved it, but it got to the point where I'd done every cover and there was nowhere else to go with it. It was just a case of jumping off while you're still on top, as opposed to slowly fading away."

It's obvious from your tweets that you're a fitness fanatic. Would you ever do a DVD?

"I've been asked to do fitness DVDs, but I'm not really a fan of them. I'm not going to say it's a con, because people do lose weight, they look great and I'm all for people getting fit. But you have a personal trainer by your side throughout your DVD shoot. You have that guidance and knowledge - and a pay cheque at the end of it. The average Joe who wants to lose weight doesn't have that.

"Anyone can shed a few stone, but keeping it off is the hard part. So I'd be more interested in maybe doing a book about a healthy long-term lifestyle, as opposed to a quick fix for just 12 weeks. I know people who've done fitness DVDs and they're under so much pressure to keep the weight off because if they put it back on, they won't get paid or the public will turn on them. It's too much pressure."

Hell hath no fury like a women scorned and in next week’s Emmerdale there will be two ladies looking for revenge.
It soon becomes apparent that both Tracy Shankley and Carly Hope have the hots for the same man, a van driver called Duncan.
At the start of the week Tracy begs Finn Barton to open the B&B for her date with Duncan and he finally agrees.
During their romantic encounter Duncan suggests that they sleep together but Tracy refuses and she soon realises she’s had a lucky escape when she clocks Duncan flirting with Carly.
Carly’s smug about her date with Duncan but soon finds out from Finn that he’s married and realises that Tracy’s not the only one who has been played by him.
The two women decide to join forces and unite taking Duncan’s van keys and steal the wine from the back.
They’re pleased with their plan to make some extra money on the side until Finn reminds Carly she’s on a suspended sentence and could find herself in prison if she’s caught out.
Will the fear of jail be enough to stop Carly in her tracks?

The latest edition of Radio Times lists actor Richard Southgate for the Emmerdale Duncan guy who tries to unsuccessfully date Tracy and Carly. (I've known this for a while now and he really seems to fail to impress the Emmerdale girls for now ...!)

Im sorry to.say that one word that gives me a headache
re female characters on Soaps and Tv in general is
    "feisty"
Usually means a lot of shreiking &OTT acting.
Hope to be wrong in this case. Its also a bit
patronising as it means the producer/SWs think
actress not able to give believable performance
of a serious story-so we will call her" feisty"

I think thats a possibility too Tammy.
In real life people behave very differently
one from another- React very differently!-
to such a tragedy. No acting required because
    its real!

But it takes a good actress to portray such
    emotions realistically without making a
    "mockery"of real people.

Imo.- this was the case recently in Corrie-
and Im hoping we dont have a repeat here!
