They are probably hoping that people will realise that this is fiction and not necessarily true to life in every way .... but I can see where some viewers might get the wrong idea

Yes - it is fiction and most viewers know
that- apart from those who e.g. Send
Wreaths when a character dies.

But soaps give themselves such haloes
about raising public awareness on issues
and it must be difficult to make a text book
case interesting and all personal exoeriences
are different.
So.when people with no experience of a
situation see a character with a specific
illness on tv they assume there may be
a some truth in it and that can foster
misconceptions.
So a lot less pious twaddle from Priducers
and a bit more accuracy in progs would
be nice.
