Stephanie Cole has promised that there are "moving" scenes in store on Coronation Street as her current storyline continues.

The actress was introduced to Weatherfield last month as Roy Cropper's (David Neilson) outspoken mother Sylvia, who has a strained relationship with the café owner.

Speaking on This Morning today, Cole confirmed that Roy and Sylvia's history will be further explored on screen in the coming weeks.

She explained: "Well, as you can imagine, Roy was a very difficult child and in fact we've just recorded the real background to what went on, which I'm not going to give away because it's quite deep and subtle."

Meanwhile, asked whether Sylvia knows about the background of Roy's transsexual wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh), Cole replied: "Not at the moment, but it does become clear. There are several glorious episodes, because it all kind of unravels very gradually and it is well worth a watch, I have to say. It's very witty and very moving as well."

Although Sylvia has been described as the soap's new battleaxe, Cole added that there could be more to the character than meets the eye.

"She's a tremendous battleaxe, but as is so often the case with battleaxes, it's actually a bit of a cover," she commented. "They don't like to show their feelings because they think if they do, they make themselves vulnerable and they might get more hurt.

"She's also actually incredibly witty, which I love! One of the things that I love about Corrie is that there's a lot of humour and a lot of wit in it."

Cole has previously appeared in Doc Martin, Tenko and Waiting for God.

THE Street’s famous café faces ruin thanks to a meddling newcomer.

Roys Rolls, run by Hayley and Roy Cropper, is under threat when they leave his battleaxe mum Sylvia in charge while they go on holiday.

In hilarious episodes next month viewers will see Sylvia (Stephanie Cole, 69) alienate regulars by cutting back on portions of food and charging for salt, ketchup and milk in cuppas.

She even introduces a fee for use of the toilets.

Soap fans will see dopey Kirk Sutherland (Andrew Whyment, 30) emerge from the loo to tell Sylvia: “Can I have my money back please, it was a false alarm.”

Coronation Street newcomer Stephanie Cole has admitted that she does not intend to stick with the soap for the rest of her career.

The actress has been working on the ITV1 show since March, appearing in the role of Roy Cropper's outspoken mother Sylvia Goodwin.

However, in an interview with TV Times, Cole confirmed that she is still eager to pursue other acting opportunities.

Discussing her Coronation Street future, she explained: "I'll limit my time there. With TV, after four series I always say, 'Thank you, that's the end of it!'

"That's why I left Doc Martin - there are other mountains to climb, other rivers to swim. I absolutely respect people who spend a long time doing one thing, but I'm not made like that."

Cole said that she is having "a wonderful time" on Coronation Street and is pleased with the complex nature of her character, who has recently managed to get on better terms with Roy (David Neilson) following a period of estrangement.

"She's not just the mother-in-law from hell or a harsh autocratic woman, but a mixture of things and a well-rounded character," she said. "She's an amalgam of lots of people I've known over the years and the Corrie writers give you such a lot in the scripts."

Awww, hope she is staying for a long time, she fits in so well

Stephanie Cole has revealed she does not intend to stay long on Coronation Street.
The veteran actress has caused a stir on the soap since she joined in March as Roy Cropper's battleaxe mother Sylvia Goodwin, but told the TV Times she has no plans to get settled in the role.

The Waiting For God star insisted she is having "a wonderful time" in Corrie and while Roy and wife Hayley may be having problems with Sylvia around, she is really enjoying the character.

Corries Sylvia Goodwin will start dishing out cakes containing cannabis in an upcoming storyline.

Sylvia, played by Stephanie Cole, whips up her own "space cakes" after purchasing drugs from a local dealer, according to the Daily Star.

The outspoken café worker is hoping to combat the pains of old age, and ends up sharing the 'treats' with a handful of her friends including Dennis Tanner (Philip Lowrie).

However, an argument later erupts when Sylvia's son Roy Cropper accidentally sells a batch to Rita Sullivan and Norris Cole. Keen to make sure they don't eat the cakes, Sylvia is forced to confess all.

Upon discovering Sylvia and Dennis's antics, Rita is quoted as saying: "How many others? My God, it's a flaming drug den in here. Sylvia, you were trying to get him addicted. She's no better than a pusher."

Sylvia replies: "I will not be vilified for attempting to relieve the suffering of my friends. I broke the law and I would do it again."

Coronation Street fans will see the storyline begin next month.

I may have totally imagined this, but haven't we had this storyline before? Like, didn't they eat some of Spider's space cakes once?
