Edna is torn as she gets her father's medals out of the drawer, knowing she has little choice but to sell them. Edna goes to seek out Rodney over the sale, but Jimmy explains that he's away on a job. Desperate, Edna tries Pollard and he knows he has her over a barrel, so he offers just £150. Edna later proves they are worth more when she shows Pollard a computer print-out, so he offers her £400. Defeated by it all, Edna seems to have no choice.

Taking the cash, Edna goes to pay the vet's fee and collect Tootsie, but Paddy sees that Edna doesn't look well. Edna insists that she's fine, but Paddy and Vanessa are convinced there's something wrong. Outside Woodbine, Jimmy tells Edna that he's worried about her and invites her for tea one night, but Edna refuses and hurries inside. Alone again, Edna is weak and dizzy. She suddenly falls after feeding Tootsie and lies unconscious...

Meanwhile, Charity is interested to hear that Katie and Declan have made up. Andy goes to Katie to tell her that she is making a mistake, as all Declan wants to do is control her. In way of explanation for Andy being up at the house, Katie tells Declan that she and Andy are just friends. She explains that she could never be with Andy, especially as he cheated on her. This makes Declan feel even guiltier for his night with Charity.

Later, just as Declan pours champagne for them both, Charity interrupts to get the contract signed and Declan takes it into the office. Charity tells Katie that she's happy for them, while Declan signs the contract, anxious to get rid of Charity. Megan sees her brother has something to hide and later questions him about how Charity got him to sign the contract. Declan is relieved when Katie suddenly interrupts.

Elsewhere, Rachel tries to talk to Sam but it's awkward, while Brenda kisses Bob when he declares his love for her.

    Tuesday

Edna remains unconscious on the floor with Tootsie whining at her side. The roofers work nosily into the afternoon, completely unaware of Edna's condition. In the end, Kev and Paul leave the site for an emergency job. Fortunately, Jimmy sees Edna through the window and tells Rodney to call an ambulance while he starts kicking at the door. They talk to a woozy Edna, who refuses to go to the hospital but reluctantly allows the paramedics to examine her.

Soon Jimmy and Rodney are picking up the clues and realise Edna's situation. Edna initially continues to try and cover, but she finally breaks down in front of Jimmy as he says he knows what's going on and should have helped sooner. Edna is devastated that her pride has been taken from her.

Meanwhile, Dan is gobsmacked to see that Brenda stayed the night with Bob. Brenda tells Gennie about the new romance, but gets confused suddenly during the conversation. Gennie says that she's happy if Brenda is, but it's clear that Brenda is worried.

Later, Brenda loses concentration and accidentally tips tea into Molly's cot. Georgia snatches Molly away and is perplexed when Brenda hurries out. Gennie is panicked about Molly, but Georgia assures her that she is fine. Gennie is shocked when Georgia suggests Brenda might have been drunk. Soon afterwards at the café, Brenda is furious when Gennie asks about her drinking. Brenda looks worried and confused, despite Bob's assurance that it will blow over.

Elsewhere, Ruby hatches a plan to get Rachel and Sam together, while Paddy and Marlon bicker and Marlon suggests they don't work together anymore.

    Wednesday

Jimmy has no choice but to tell Ashley about Edna's situation. Ashley worries about her and goes to visit, but Edna is unimpressed that people now know. Ashley says that she has to let them help her, but she is determined not to show her fear.

Later, Jimmy offers to pay for Edna's door and the damage inside, but Edna insists on it being just a loan. Edna initially refuses to go and stay with Jimmy and Nicola, but finally agrees as long as she gets to do her bit around the house. Nicola is unimpressed to have her there, while Edna is clearly feeling very out of place.

Meanwhile, Rachel thinks about calling Sam, but decides against it. Soon afterwards, Rachel is surprised when an upset Samson knocks on her door. She ushers him inside as he asks her not to tell his dad. Rachel tries to explain to Samson that it wasn't his fault about her and Sam. In the end, she takes Samson home but Sam is angry that Rachel had not called him sooner. Sam tells Rachel to stay away and Rachel leaves, kicking herself.

Later, Sam wonders if he's overreacted when Zak suggests that Rachel was just doing the right thing. Sam later visits Rachel and is awkward as he says he wishes he'd sent her the card, not Samson. They share a kiss before he leaves, and Rachel is thrilled.

Elsewhere, Gennie and Nikhil apologise to Brenda but she remains concerned as she privately pulls out a medical encyclopaedia and is worried by what she reads, while Chas agrees to give Thomas a job at the pub.

    Thursday

Bob is concerned about Brenda's moods and begins to wonder if he's the cause, as perhaps she is having second thoughts about them. Brenda admits that she has been a bit unwell recently but says it's her hormones, although it's clear she is worried. Bob reassures her, but Brenda explains that she doesn't want to visit the doctor, secretly worrying it could be something else.

Later, Brenda is in a better mood after offloading to Bob and looks forward to taking Molly swimming. She sets off in the car, but is distracted and zones out. Suddenly Brenda's car swerves out of control towards Val, who is stood in its way…

Meanwhile, Nicola is stressed about the mess Tootsie is causing, but is now feeling guilty as everyone now knows about Edna's situation. At the same time, Edna is feeling uncomfortable and displaced. Vanessa puts together a parcel of food for Edna after doing a collection around the village. Proud Edna is appalled to be given the handout, mortified at what Vanessa has done.

Later, Vanessa is exasperated as Ashley tries to explain how insensitive she is. Edna is still feeling humiliated when Ashley tries to make her see the grace in receiving help from others. Edna is grateful when Ashley suggests they go and pray together.

Elsewhere, Rachel and Sam are both tentative and nervous about being in a relationship, Nicola asks Thomas if he can handle working with Chas and he agrees to take the job, while Cameron thinks Chas is crazy for employing Thomas and tries to scupper it for Thomas.

In the café, everyone is shocked after Brenda's accident and Bob comforts her. Val calls for Brenda to be breathalysed, convinced that she is drunk or that Brenda tried to run her down deliberately. Suddenly, Brenda collapses. As she starts to shake, Bob is worried when Brenda calls out for Terry. Brenda remains confused as the paramedics arrive to take her.

Over at the hospital, Gennie and Nikhil are relieved to hear that Molly is okay having been checked over. When Brenda is brought in, Gennie is shocked to see her there. Nikhil makes things worse for Gennie when he tells her that he doesn't think it's just hormones causing Brenda's symptoms. Gennie is worried and feels guilty that she didn't ask Brenda if she was okay after the accident. Brenda is in denial and wants to go home, but Gennie is determined that the doctor needs to tell them what is going on. Gennie is upset to hear they are investigating as Brenda's symptoms might suggest something much more serious than the menopause…

Meanwhile, Cameron is annoyed when Thomas offers to help with his and Chas's late Valentine's meal. Sitting down to eat, Cameron stirs it about Thomas, but Chas wants to give him a chance. Suddenly the fire alarm goes off and Cameron is angry when Thomas sprays the extinguisher.

Marlon defends Thomas, while Chas is exasperated with Cameron's tough attitude towards him. Cameron maliciously lays into Thomas, saying that he doesn't belong here - but Thomas loses it, saying that with his father gone he needs to be near Jimmy. Cameron apologises and Chas is grateful, not realising it's all for his own conscience.

Elsewhere, Rachel and Sam spend the night together for the first time, Ashley, Laurel and Marlon are concerned that Sandy has gone AWOL again, while Nicola assures Edna that she'll soon be home but Edna's not so sure.

    Friday

Gennie is worried about Brenda and feels bad for not saying anything to her about what the doctor told them. Bob thinks Gennie should tell her mum, but Gennie is adamant they do things her way. Soon afterwards, Bob and Gennie arrive at the hospital and Brenda suddenly starts to cry.

Brenda and Gennie are worried when a neurosurgeon comes to say the results are back. Brenda is told that she has a lesion and they need to perform a biopsy. Gennie is shellshocked, but Brenda is in denial that there's anything wrong. Later, Gennie breaks down, worried about Brenda. She is then shocked further when Brenda says that she doesn't want Bob to know what's going on.

Meanwhile, Chas is dismayed by Thomas's attitude towards her when he arrives at work. Cameron warns Chas about taking on 'projects' and she is confused by Cameron's strength of feeling. Later, Thomas tries to be chatty with Cameron, but Cameron tells him it's not going to work and strongly warns him that he wants him out. Thomas tells Cameron that he won't have any say in that, but he shows a flicker of anxiety.

Soon afterwards, Cameron is annoyed to see Chas is putting Thomas on the payroll. He explains that she shouldn't have to have him there, reminding her about what she did to Carl. Chas is baffled about Cameron being so angry over Thomas.

Elsewhere, Rachel and Sam are self-conscious as they go on a date, both keen to return to Rachel's as quickly as possible.

Edna Birch's sad Emmerdale storyline comes to a head next week as she suffers a shock collapse at home.

The village's long-standing resident has been hiding her financial problems from all of her friends and acquaintances over the past few months, feeling too proud to ask for help. However, upcoming episodes see Edna finally forced to accept support as the truth comes out at last.

With Edna starting to become unwell due to her dire situation, she feels weak and dizzy at home before losing consciousness. Fortunately, Jimmy King (Nick Miles) sees Edna through the window and calls an ambulance.

Shirley Stelfox, who plays Edna, explained: "This situation has been a nightmare for Edna. She believes she can cope and she believes that she can do things, but she has no real understanding of this sort of situation.

"Edna won't ask for help, because her pride will not allow her. She feels that she can do everything herself. Edna is also starting to feel unwell. She's not recognising it because she feels she's tough enough. She doesn't realise that the faintness she feels is worse than stress.

"People in the village are starting to become concerned for Edna, but she has no idea - because she hopes they don't know!" Edna begins to feel dizzy and falls unconscious

When Jimmy discovers how much Edna is struggling, he invites her to move in with him and Nicola. Although Edna reluctantly agrees, she finds herself facing a whole new challenge as she struggles to accept the Kings' help with good grace.

Stelfox commented: "Edna is embarrassed - she hates it. She's willing to give help, but she doesn't take it! She feels very uncomfortable living with Jimmy and Nicola.

"It's not a case of her asking for help, but rather that she's having to accept help which is being forced on her. Jimmy threatens to camp out in her house if she doesn't move in!

"Ashley is also keen to help, but her relationship with him is still a little bit strained. They have God in common, though. That seems to have got a little bit lost at the moment, but hopefully things will improve." Edna finally agrees to stay at the Kings'

Asked how viewers are responding to Edna's storyline, Stelfox replied: "It's been fantastic. People are so sad for her, and a lot of people tell me that it's making them cry!

"I heard of a little boy saying to his mummy - who was talking to one of our make-up ladies - 'Mummy, will you give your friend my pocket money to give to Edna, because she's got no food?' I think that is just wonderful, that a little boy wants to give up his pocket money!"

Stelfox also confirmed that she is an Emmerdale fan herself, regularly tuning in to see Edna and the rest of the characters in action.

She said: "I watch it all the time. I just enjoy watching the entire thing and seeing characters and storylines evolve. Some of them I like, some of them I don't like. I'm a punter!"

Finally, asked to name her most treasured Emmerdale memory after 12 years with the soap, Stelfox replied: "There are too many to answer that question. 12 years is the answer!"

So would I Sarah. Its about time this storyline was wrapped up. And what better way to wrap things up by Thomas discovering the body of Alex in the woods with Cameron watching nearby.
Whoever signed up the actor who plays Thomas did an excellent job. The likeness between him and Carl King is uncanny.

Emmerdale's Shirley Stelfox has said that she cried for days on end when she filmed Edna's dog dying in 2003.

The veteran actress will be most remembered by many soap fans for the scenes when Edna Birch's canine companion Batley passed away.

"When Batley the dog died, I wept for days. Stupid, isn't it? I can't play it off the top of my head," she told the TV Times.

Next week in similarly sad scenes, Edna will collapse after her secret financial problems stop her from eating properly.

Stelfox said of the plot's emotional strain: "The only way I can act is to be deeply involved in what Edna's going through and that can be very tiring. I'm completely worn out at the moment. Sometimes it can take me days to come out of it.

"Pride is stopping her from asking for help and I can identity with that because I'm from a generation that doesn't ask for help.

"I'm determined to get this right because I want people to see that pride can kill - to watch her and think, 'This is happening to me'. It's very topical."

The 71-year-old, who has been on Emmerdale for 13 years, further revealed that she never intended a long stay on ITV's rural serial.

"That's not why I became an actress. I wanted to do every role from Shakespeare to Greek tragedy through to farce and everything in between," she added.

"But I like Edna and the people I'm working with. And I love that she's an old bat and says things to people's faces.

"I'm only on a year's contract. You must never expect to be picked up for the next one as you might be very disappointed. However, I'm always delighted when they ask me again because they're brilliant here.

"I'd consider retiring if I couldn't remember my lines. Or if they didn't want me and I didn't get any other work - but that's not retiring, that's being out of work. I hate that expression, 'Oh she's resting'. It's rubbish!"
