Meanwhile, Emmerdale airs Alicia Gallagher's return scenes in just over a week's time as she is finally released from prison.

As Jacob takes to the stage as the innkeeper in the village's nativity play, his face lights up when Alicia (Natalie Anderson) arrives back out of the blue to watch his big moment.

David (Matthew Wolfenden) is shocked by Alicia's sudden appearance as she is a day early, while Priya (Fiona Wade) isn't best pleased as she knows that the pair will have to carry on pretending to be a couple.

In the days that follow, it's clear that Alicia is still harbouring strong feelings for David, so Priya is keen for David to be honest with his wife. Can David bring himself to tell Alicia that he's now with Priya?

    Monday

Jai explains to Rishi that he is terrified Archie could die without him ever having seen him. At the same time, Rachel struggles to keep strong as Archie is still in the incubator and she is restricted to limited contact. Ruby suggests that Rachel could take a break for a few hours, but Rachel doesn't want to leave him. She tells them that she needs some time alone with Archie to clear the way for Jai's secret visit.

Later, Sam suggests that he and Rachel could go for a drink in the canteen, but she spots Jai arriving and snaps at Sam. Rachel feels wretched as Sam walks off. Jai meets Archie for the first time and is blown away by how perfect he looks. However, Jai's reverie is shattered when Rachel declares that this visit is his 'hello' and his 'goodbye' - after this he is to have nothing more to do with Archie. Jai pleads, but Rachel holds firm. Jai leaves, fighting back the tears.

Meanwhile, David feels guilty when Jacob is excited about Alicia coming home in time for Christmas. Pollard thinks David should face up and tell Alicia about Priya, but David wants to wait until after Christmas so he doesn't rock the boat. At the same time, Priya is upset about Alicia's upcoming return and Rishi advises her to be honest with David. Later, Priya attempts to speak to David and he tries to reassure her about how he feels, but Jacob interrupts and the moment passes.

Elsewhere, it's the day before Chas's trial. In prison, Chas asks Cameron to plead with Debbie not to go through with her vengeful plan. However, Cameron doesn't think it will help saying anything now, as Debbie is hell bent on giving her piece. Later, Gennie makes it clear that she is going to the trial to support Chas. Debbie doesn't care, though, as she just can't wait for the moment when Chas gets sent down.

Also today, Moira is surprised when Cain admits his feelings, but they need to get the trial out of the way first.

    Tuesday

The tension in the village is palpable as Charity is about to leave for Chas's trial. Debbie isn't due to give evidence until tomorrow, but she wonders if she should go today. However, Charity insists that she should stay home with the kids.

In court, a terrified Chas pleads not guilty as the trial begins. Cain arrives late and as the defence solicitor starts to give evidence, Cain shouts out and interrupts the proceedings. Charity hurriedly bundles Cain out, while Chas looks visibly shaken. It's clear that the outcome of the trial could go either way.

Later in The Woolpack, Charity bursts in on Cain in the gents and lays into him about his behaviour in court. The other regulars in the pub discuss the day's events, and Cameron snaps as Zak comments that it doesn't look good for Chas. Soon afterwards, Debbie arrives and with vitriol, she tells everyone that she'll ensure Chas will go down for this so Chas and Cameron can never be together…

Meanwhile, Jude introduces the nativity play, which is staged in The Woolpack. Priya can't wait for Christmas to be over so that she can have David back. As a kind gesture, she offers to film Jacob in the nativity. Jacob is playing the Innkeeper and his face lights up when Alicia arrives back from prison out of the blue. Priya and David are gobsmacked as Alicia is a day early. Priya is gutted as she watches David and Alicia share a kiss.

Once home, Jacob is happy to have his family together again and wants them to pose for a photo. Alicia apologises to David for everything, but still has a glimmer of hope of them getting together.

Elsewhere, Rishi worries about Jai when he hears that Rachel has kicked him out of Archie's life, Zak clocks a charged look between Cain and Moira in the pub, Moira asks Cain if it's really too much to stand by Chas, while Ruby worries Sam may have a crush on Rachel and tells him to back off.

    Wednesday

Charity and Cain are worried about Debbie, who is aggressive as she sets off for court. In the café, Cameron looks like a nervous wreck, totally on edge as he asks Alex to go to court for him and report back on what happens. As the day's proceedings begin, Debbie tells the court exactly what she thinks of Chas. Debbie enjoys telling them what Chas is like, adding how she screwed Carl out of £30,000. The defence solicitor questions Debbie about Carl attacking her three years ago and Debbie is hard to read as she considers lying. She tries to be cocky, but she is crushed as she sees that it's only giving more hope for Chas.

Later, Chas prepares to tell the court about Carl's attack on her. She knows it will be tough as the prosecution begins to question her. She is distraught and tearful as she tells the court how she feels.

Meanwhile, at the farm, Cain attempts to apologise to Moira for yesterday and they end up kissing until Vanessa suddenly walks in on them. Cain is angry and threatens Vanessa not to say anything. Moira is mortified and embarrassed by Cain's attitude, but Cain defends his actions. Cain leaves and Moira debates whether to tell Adam about them or not.

In the café, Zak clicks that there's something going on with Cain and Moira. At the same time, Moira makes the decision to tell Adam, who is furious. Outside The Woolpack, Adam confronts Cain - he'd hit him if Cain didn't have Jack in his arms. Adam storms off while Cain gives Moira an angry yet despairing look.

Elsewhere, Alicia is grateful when Priya persuades Bernice to re-hire her at The Woolpack, Rachel tells Bob that baby Archie is out of danger, Ruby feels guilty when Rachel mentions that Sam is suddenly behaving strangely towards her, while Alex is concerned about Edna and offers to cook for her.

    Thursday

Cameron hasn't slept and is a wreck. He snaps at Alex as he is paranoid about giving his evidence and is trying not to freak out. At the same time, over at Mill Cottage, Jimmy is torn between doing the right thing for Chas or his family, as Nicola tells him that he needs to lie in court or he could end up getting sent down himself.

Later, Jimmy struggles to fight tears as he is questioned about Carl by the prosecution and asked if his brother is capable of murder. Jimmy is distraught after the questioning as he believes he has blown it for Chas, while Charity revels in it.

Soon afterwards, Cameron is terrified as he is called into court and Debbie smiles, hoping they will tear him apart. Cameron pulls himself together as he declares the oath and tries to cover his fear as he smiles at Chas.

Cameron tells the court how much Chas is suffering for what she has done and says that she doesn't deserve to be punished anymore. Cameron is frustrated as he tells the prosecution that he knows Chas is not capable of murder. He tells the barrister that he'd like to say something, stating that he knows Chas didn't kill Carl…

Meanwhile, Cain is ready to go to France to see Aaron and wishes Debbie a happy Christmas. Moira arrives wanting to talk to him, but is exasperated to discover that Cain is running away. Vanessa calls on Moira and suggests they should try again as they have got off on the wrong foot. Soon Vanessa and Moira are bonding and Moira fills her in on everything.

Elsewhere, David feels the pressure as Priya insists that he must tell Alicia the truth, Rachel makes Ruby apologise to Sam, Jai frantically tries to get news on Archie but Rachel ignores his calls, while Amy wonders where to spend Christmas Day and soon a plan is hatched to share it with Victoria.

Cameron freezes in court, knowing it's now or never. However, he can't bring himself to confess and instead mouths "I'm sorry" to Chas. The prosecution and defence sum up to the jury and Cameron is convinced that he has sealed Chas's fate, terrified he hasn't done enough. The judge finishes summing up the day's proceedings and Chas is taken down. Chas breaks down as she asks her solicitor when she will find out her fate.

Back in the village, Cameron is in a complete mess. Close to a panic attack, Cameron unburdens himself and makes his shocking confession to a fellow villager…

Meanwhile, Alicia is worried when Pollard asks whether she and David are getting a divorce now she is out of prison. She tries to put on a brave face as she suggests to David that they should get a divorce, but it's not what she really wants. Alicia is determined to make the most of their time together and covers to Bernice by saying that she has a stomach bug. David worries about what he has let himself in for.

Back home, Jacob and David pick a film and Alicia gives David a present. She snuggles down with him, happy to have another chance at making things work.

Elsewhere, Nicola is grateful to Jimmy for putting his family first, Edna asks Jimmy whether Carl really did murder Tom, Victoria tells Adam that she plans to set Amy up with Robbie, Adam clears the air with Moira about Cain, while Zak advises Moira to walk away from her new romance.

    ƒriday

A paranoid Cameron lurks in the village, regretting his confession. He grabs his confidant as they leave their house, panicked they will go to the police. Cameron says that he'll confess to the authorities himself, but knowing his secret is not safe, he decides to take action.

Cameron hits his confidant with a fence post and watches as they slump to the ground unconscious. Cameron is parked up in the woods, agonising over what to do next when he gets a text from Jimmy about Chas's verdict. Later, the villager is tied up in Cameron's van struggling to break free, but it is hopeless…

Meanwhile, Debbie is lost in thought as she prepares for Chas's judgement day. In the court, Chas is led to take her place in the dock and frantically looks for Cameron, but there is no sign. She is stunned as the jury delivers their verdict and Cameron is nowhere to be seen.

Elsewhere, Amy and Robbie decide to get their own back when they realise that Adam and Victoria are trying to set them up, Kerry refuses to go to Val and Pollard's for Christmas dinner and they're left feeling frustrated, Megan gets the champagne out as Declan brings Katie home but Katie is not so optimistic about the future, while Alicia is oblivious to Priya's anguish as she tells Bernice how much she is looking forward to Christmas with Jacob and David.

Emmerdale actress Natalie Anderson has confirmed that she has signed a new one-year contract with the soap after her maternity leave.

The actress, who plays Alicia Metcalfe, also revealed that her character may have a new love interest in the New Year.

Anderson told the Daily Star that she was thrilled to sign her new contract, adding: "I would *happily stay in *Emmerdale for as long as they will have me."

When Alicia returns to the Yorkshire dales after being let out of prison she has no idea her husband is dating Priya Sharma.

She finds out about David's secret relationship when she discovers a present that she at first thinks is for her. However, when she sees Priya wearing it she realises that they are together.

The actress said that there is no fighting and screaming in the scenes where she confronts the pair about their secret relationship.

Anderson said: "When I was filming those scenes, my heart was pounding.

"A lot of people expect her to go all guns blazing and sort Priya out. But the writers have done it so beautifully and she realises that ultimately neither of them has done anything wrong.

"David was always honest with her. She's got no bad feelings against him and ultimately he is her best friend. She loves him dearly."

[Alicia is surprised to open a pen and pencil set for Christmas from David, despite finding a bracelet earlier]

On the possibility of Alicia finding new love after her split from David, Anderson hinted: "It's on the cards that she could meet someone else. There is going to be a new Alicia in the New Year.

"She's still got that wacky side but she's going to be more self-assured and more grown-up about providing for her and her little boy, rather than depending on anyone else.

"She gets her job back in The *Woolpack and there is going to be a bit of attention from someone else."

Anderson returns to Emmerdale on Tuesday, December 18.

This reminds me of Eastenders when Bianca got back to the square when Tiffany was in The Vic's nativity

why does Chas need a Trial when she has pleaded guilty?

what has the Jury got to consider? whether her saying 'Guilty' was a lie?

this would have been a hearing and committal for sentancing surely?

or am I missing something....? (apart from the crap writing and the sensationalisation )

Chas changed her mind again and decided to plead not guilty, hence the trial.

Emmerdale's Chas Dingle is terrified as her murder trial begins in tonight's (December 18) episode of the soap.

Chas (Lucy Pargeter) is still hoping to clear her name and pleads not guilty as the proceedings kick off, but she soon realises the severity of her situation as things look incredibly bleak for her.

The prosecution lawyer soon leaves Chas shaken by painting her as a manipulative liar who killed Carl King to stop him from exposing her affair with Cameron Murray.

Chas's defence representative then explains her actions in a very different light, but this only serves to antagonise a furious Cain (Jeff Hordley), who shouts out angrily from the public gallery…
