Maybe its just me but I think the storywriters are trying to make Gloria one of the main characters in Corrie just as they tried and failed with St. Ella . Unlike St. Ella the character is good but only in small doses. She is well played by Sue Johnson unlike St.Ella but too much exposure at the expense of other characters is not the way to go about it. After all Blanche who apparently she is supposed to replace was never a leading character and Maggie Jones was a superb actress.

I agree with you, Alan, but I can't help but enjoy Gloria's scenes as she's such a great actress, and I'm even enjoying her and Stella's banter. I have to admit that the storyline of Gloria trying to win pub of the year when she's just arrived is totally ridiculous.

Coronation Street fans can expect another one-off schedule change for the soap next month.

There will be no Friday night double bill on October 12 as ITV1 will be airing the World Cup qualifier between England and San Marino.

An hour-long Sunday edition has been pencilled in for October 14 to compensate, but the timeslot for this has yet to be confirmed.

Emmerdale is unaffected by the football coverage and will air on October 12 as normal.

Over on Coronation Street, Deirdre Barlow is in for an unpleasant surprise as she discovers that Wendy Crozier is back in Ken's life.

Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) grows suspicious in the coming days when she realises that Ken is starting to lie to her about his whereabouts.

Although Ken (Bill Roache) isn't having an affair, he is starting to spend more time with ex-lover Wendy Crozier (Roberta Kerr) as part of their commitments as school governors - and definitely doesn't want Deirdre to find out that they are back in contact.

The final straw for Deirdre comes on Ken's birthday when he snubs the chance to spend time with her, claiming that he has a meeting to attend with Brian Packham.

Deirdre isn't sure that she can trust Ken and her fears are confirmed when she bumps into Brian at The Kabin and he doesn't know anything about the meeting.

Soon afterwards, Deirdre spots Ken heading off in a cab. Determined to get answers, she collars Rita who's getting into her car and the pair follow Ken.

When Ken arrives at his destination, Deirdre is in for the shock of her life when she sees him greeting Wendy with a friendly kiss on the cheek. How will Deirdre react to Wendy being back on the scene?

    Monday

Ken is underwhelmed by a birthday gift and card from Deirdre, who is still keeping schtum about knowing Ken has lied to her. Later, on his own, Ken takes the opportunity to open Wendy's gift. When he calls to thank her, she invites him over. Ken then leaves for Wendy's, telling a suspicious Deirdre that he has another meeting with Brian, while she clocks his new cufflinks.

When Deirdre bumps into Brian and asks him how the meeting was, it's clear that Brian has no idea what Deirdre is talking about and that Ken has lied again. As Deirdre sees Ken head for a cab, she collars Rita who's getting into her car and the pair follow Ken. When Ken arrives at his destination, Deirdre is in for the shock of her life…

Meanwhile, Ryan tries to help out at Sally's by doing some cleaning and cooking supper. A miffed Michele happens to overhear Sally and Ryan discussing his endearing habits, and Michelle feels she's failed as a mother. Later, while Ryan is cooking supper, Tracy turns up. Unimpressed at what he's doing she tries to distract him, but Ryan isn't falling for it and Tracy leaves feeling snubbed. Later, Michelle snaps when she sees Sally and accuses her of trying to come between a mother and her son.

Elsewhere, Jason wonders if Marcus will give him a hand moving the rest of his stuff into Maria's, but his bed is empty. Maria reckons he must have stayed at Aiden's, but she is secretly worried. Her worries mount when Aiden reveals that he and Marcus had a huge row and he stormed off into the night. Later, Marcus calls in the salon to see Maria. He apologises for disappearing all night and suggests they need to talk.

Also, Gail and Nick give Mary a taste of her own medicine by trying to lure the café's customers to the Bistro for bargain breakfasts. Kylie has plans to step up in the world and train as a hairdresser, but can David be convinced?

Ken is relaxing over coffee at Wendy's. The pair wonder what it might have been like if they hadn't split, but quickly agree that some questions are best left unanswered.

Back at Number 1, Deirdre confronts Ken - she knows he's been with Wendy Crozier. Ken insists there's nothing going on between them, but Deirdre is inconsolable - 20 years on and even saying that woman's name is like a stab to the heart. Deirdre storms out, telling Ken he can stuff his birthday drinks.

Later at the pub, Ken has a drink with Rita, Dennis and Emily, claiming that Deirdre has a headache. At the same time, Wendy is taken aback when Deirdre lands on her doorstep and tells her to back off. When Ken arrives home, he finds Deirdre shaken by her encounter with Wendy. Bracing herself, she offers him an ultimatum.

Meanwhile, Michelle and Sally continue to row at work and when Michelle says some hurtful things, Sally initiates a walk out. In the pub with the factory workers, Sally tells Rob what she's done. When Rob tackles Michelle, she gets defensive - she doesn't need to be reminded she has failed as a mother by Sally Webster! She eventually concedes defeat and heads to the pub to publicly apologise. But will Sally accept Michelle's apology?

Elsewhere, Maria tackles Marcus about staying out all night. She apologises for kissing him, while Marcus admits it has thrown him into turmoil. Maria tries to laugh it off as Jason bustles in with some of his stuff. Later, Aiden lays into Marcus. Maria cuts in and tells him about her cancer scare and Aiden stops short. Marcus is awkward when Aiden apologises for losing the plot and the couple make up. By the end of the day, Jason is fully moved in. As Maria hugs him, she and Marcus share a poignant smile.

Also, Mary ups the ante by planning a Russian night at the café, Kylie's big idea comes crashing down courtesy of David, and Gloria's ambitions to win pub of the year escalate when she also enters The Rovers into the B&B category.

    Wednesday

Feeling guilty that Michelle clearly misses Ryan, Sally suggests that she comes round to Number 4 so they can discuss the situation with her as referee, which Michelle is grateful for. Later, Sally's Supernanny-style summit begins and there's a result. Michelle and Ryan finally iron out their differences and Ryan decides he'd like to come home.

In The Rovers, Ryan tells Tracy his news and suggests they cool things for a bit until he's settled back in at home. Of course Tracy is having none of that. As she stews in the pub, she decides to pay Michelle and Ryan a visit and plays an ace card guaranteed to drive Michelle over the edge - announcing that she is pregnant…

Meanwhile, Ken insists yet again that there's nothing going on with Wendy, but Deirdre tells him firmly she wants him nowhere near the woman - he has to resign from the board of governors immediately. Ken arrives at Brian's office to officially resign and things get awkward when Wendy shows up unexpectedly. Both she and Brian concur that it's a pity they couldn't all be adult and move on from the past.

Later, Brian pleads with Deirdre as she is taking away his most valued governor. Deirdre stands firm, but Rita provides a voice of reason - maybe Brian has a point? Deirdre listens, but will she relent?

Elsewhere, Nick arrives at Roy's Rolls hoping to call a truce. However, when he makes some patronising comments about the café, Mary and Anna aren't impressed and tell him where he can shove his olive branch.

Also toda, Kylie feels increasingly useless at the salon and her frustrations mount about not being able to give Max the right start in life, while Gloria encourages Stella to have a weekend away as she takes her first B&B booking.

The next episode of Coronation Street airs on Sunday, October 14.
