The Military Wives Choir and Gareth Malone have been crowned as this year's Christmas number one with their song 'Wherever You Are'.

The group triumphed over tracks such as Little Mix's 'Cannonball', Lou Monte's 'Dominick the Donkey', 'Paradise' by Coldplay and Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in the race for the festive top spot.

Malone formed the Military Wives Choir - which comprises the wives, partners and girlfriends of serving armed forces members - for his BBC Two factual show The Choir: Military Wives. He offered his congratulations to the choir on Twitter, writing: "Congratulations ladies. You did it. Be very very proud. Gxxxx."

'Wherever You Are' was made VAT exempt following a request from Conservative MP Oliver Colvile, and attracted the largest two-day sales figures for six years earlier this week.

Proceeds from the single will benefit two armed forces charities - the Royal British Legion and SSAFA Forces Help (the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association).

Little Mix drop one place to number two, while Coldplay slide three places to number five.

Lou Monte's 'Dominick the Donkey' enters the Top 40 at number three following a campaign by BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles. The track shifted nearly 93,000 copies and makes the UK chart for the first time since its original release 51 years ago. YouTube sensation Alex Day sold almost 53,000 copies of his self-released single 'Forever Yours' to take fourth place.

Elsewhere, Olly Murs drops three places to six with 'Dance With Me Tonight', while Rihanna and Calvin Harris slide five to tenth place in the chart. Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' just misses the Top 10 following a Facebook campaign to make it Christmas number one, charting at number 11.

Adele's 21 has scored an incredible 19th week at the top of the UK album chart to become the longest-reigning LP from a solo artist in history.

The London-born singer's sophomore record - which was recently named as the UK's biggest-selling album of the 21st century with over 3.8m copies to date - returned for a third stint in pole position in its 50th week of release.

21 has now become the longest-running number one album for almost 42 years and achieved the sixth-greatest reign in history, finishing behind releases from music legends The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel.

Adele is trailed by fellow chart veteran Doo Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars, a non-mover at two, and last week's number one + by Ed Sheeran at three.

New mother Beyoncé celebrates by seeing her 4 album leap from 12 to six in its 28th week of release, while Olly Murs drops three to seven with In Case You Didn't Know and Jessie J's Who You Are scrambles two to eight.

Rihanna falls three to round out the Top 10 with Talk That Talk, as Westlife's Greatest Hits album and Will Young's Echoes move in the opposite direction, climbing two and four respectively to 11 and 12.

One Direction slip back to the double digits after falling six to 14 with Up All Night, the self-titled debut from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is up three to 15 and The Vaccines manage a mighty shift from 33 to 16 with What Did You Expect From The Vaccines.

Adele's 21 success is complemented by the return of its predecessor 19 to the upper half of the top 40. The January 2008 release rises 22 places to 18 and is trailed by Florence + The Machine's Ceremonials at 19 and The Lady Killer by Cee Lo Green at 20.

Flo Rida has collected his third UK singles chart number one with 'Good Feeling'.

The rapper's latest effort pulled 'Paradise' by Coldplay off the top spot after rising from last Sunday's three in its eighth week of release.

Taio Cruz scores today's highest new entry at three with 'Trouble Maker', while 'Levels' by Avicii - which is sampled on Flo Rida's chart-topping track - also improves its position this week, advancing to four from its previous finish at 12.

The climbers countine elsewhere in the Top 10, as 'Mama Do The Hump' by Rizzle Kicks heads from ten to five and Jessie J's 'Domino' leaps a hefty 26 places to eight. Last week's runner-up 'Dance With Me Tonight' by Olly Murs settles between them at six.

Rihanna and Calvin Harris drop four to nine with 'We Found Love', the trio of Lloyd, Andre 300 and Lil Wayne climb three to ten with 'Dedication To My Ex (Miss That)' and LMFAO's 'Sexy And I Know It' is booted back out of the top-sellers after a brief return last week, slipping two to 11.

Big losses are posted later in the rankings by Ed Sheeran's 'Lego House', down six to 13, the 2011 Christmas number one 'Wherever You Are' by the Military Wives choir, down from four to 14, and 'Cannonball' by X Factor winners Little Mix, which crashes nine to 15.

JLS, meanwhile, record their lowest-charting debut to date with 'Do You Feel What I Feel' at 16 and fellow X Factor alum Olly Murs appears again at 19 with 'Heart Skips A Beat', stumbling four to 19.

The top 20 is completed by new mother Beyoncé, whose 'Love On Top' record sneaks back to the upper digits from last week's 22.

Jessie J has scored her second UK singles chart number one with 'Domino'.

The Who You Are singer's latest release, which lingered at 34 just two weeks ago, climbed seven places to knock previous champion 'Good Feeling' by Flo Rida from the top of the chart.

Rizzle Kicks, meanwhile, advance two spots to three with 'Mama Do The Hump', while a fellow climber in the shape of 'Dedication To My Ex (Miss That)' by Lloyd, Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne completes the top five.

However, the biggest gain in the Top 10 belongs to David Guetta and Sia, who rocket a massive 53 entries to eight with 'Titanium'. 'Dance With Me Tonight' by Olly Murs and 'Earthquake' by Labrinth and Tinie Tempah fall three apiece to fill out the Top 10.

Beyoncé also zooms up the chart after hitting headlines with the birth of her first child Blue Ivy last week. Her single 'Love On Top' is at 13 from last week's 20.

Pixie Lott's 'Kiss The Stars' becomes the week's highest new entry at 12, LMFAO crash four to 15 with 'Sexy And I Know It' and Lana Del Rey clambers to 16 from last Sunday's 26 with 'Video Games'.

Kelly Clarkson and the duo of Pitbull and Chris Brown just miss out on a spot on the top 20 with respective songs 'Stronger' and 'International Love', both new entries at 21 and 23.

Finally, Birdy's 'Skinny Love' returns to the Top 40 at 25 after its use in Hollyoaks star Jorgie Porter's Dancing on Ice routine last week.
