    Cool Viv to leave Emmerdale

Emmerdale star Deena Payne is to leave the soap after 18 years in the role of Viv Hope, it has been announced.

The actress will bow out from the part within the next few months - though details of her final storyline are currently being kept closely under wraps.

Despite the secrecy surrounding Viv's forthcoming departure, show producers have confirmed that her exit will be at the heart of a "huge winter storyline".

In a statement, Payne commented: "Emmerdale has been such a gift to me for the past 18 years and I've taken every challenge with both hands and enjoyed the ride.

"I'm very proud of Viv and the impact she has had over the years. I will miss putting on her shoulder pads and high heels every morning, but I am very excited about what the future holds."

Emmerdale's series producer Gavin Blyth added: "Deena created one of Emmerdale's most iconic characters in Viv. She's been a fundamental part of the show over the years and a valued member of the cast for which we are very grateful.

"We do not take decisions about losing characters lightly, but it is also the nature of soap that characters must come and go from village life. Deena's exit will be both unmissable and moving."

Viv's most recent storyline has seen her split from husband Bob (Tony Audenshaw), though there have since been hints that the sharp-witted character is struggling to move on following the break-up.

EMMERDALE'S longest serving female star Deena Payne has been axed after 18 years playing Viv Hope.
The actress, 56, joined as the Woolpack landlady in 1993.

She told how she went through a rollercoaster of emotions after learning that Viv, who is now the village postmistress, was being written out.

Deena said: "My first feeling was a rope had been taken off, complete relief. Then came the anxiety. You worry about financial security, then rejection, which isn't nice."

Although shocked, she said she'd been expecting something to happen as her character had increasingly been sidelined. Deena, who recently wed her long-term partner, musician Steve Grant, told Hello! magazine: "The last 16 months have been frustrating. To come in now and then to clear a table or throw a line over my shoulder was horrible.

"In the past I had two or three major storyline challenges a year. I thought about not accepting another contract because I was so unhappy."

Tony Audenshaw, who plays her on-screen hubby Bob, said: "Viv is an icon. I'm devastated."

Emmerdale said Viv would go as part of a "huge" winter storyline.

She is right, since she has come back, she has not really had much of a storyline other than another break-up with Bob, I shall miss her, I like her a lot.

The writers were wrong to split her and Bob up. I'll miss Viv but her storylines have been poor.

Deena Payne, who plays 'Emmerdale' battle axe Viv Hope, is being written out of the show after 18 years.

The actress will leave the ITV1 soap in the next couple of months as part of a "huge winter storyline".

In a statement, Deena said: "'Emmerdale' has been such a gift to me for the past 18 years and I've taken every challenge with both hands and enjoyed the ride.

"I'm very proud of Viv and the impact she has had over the years. I will miss putting on her shoulder pads and high heels every morning, but I am very excited about what the future holds."

Speaking about the shock decision to axe the popular character, 'Emmerdale's series producer Gavin Blyth added: "Deena created one of 'Emmerdale's most iconic characters in Viv. She's been a fundamental part of the show over the years and a valued member of the cast for which we are very grateful.

"We do not take decisions about losing characters lightly, but it is also the nature of soap that characters must come and go from village life. Deena's exit will be both unmissable and moving."

Gutted. I think Viv has improved as a character since returning from her time in prison. They have toned her down a bit and that has been a good thing. I hope they don“t kill her off.

If they kill her off then Bob will be left with the twins. They may send her to live with Donna or Scott and take the twins with her.

One's a Hope, the other's a Charity, so it's no wonder Emma Atkins will be sad to see the back of Deena Payne.

Emma, who plays fiery Charity Tate in Emmerdale, has confessed she was "shocked" by the news Deena had been axed after her 18 years as Viv Hope.

But she has faith (see what we did there?) that the actress will go on to great things, especially in the world of music and dance.

"I am very sad," Emma said, at the launch of a new Emmerdale spin-off DVD.

"It was a bit of a shock initially but I think it will be amazing for Deena to have a rebirth, and go out into the world and do her own thing.

"She's very talented as a dancer and a singer as well so I think she'll be very successful and I wish her all the luck."

She added that Deena is pleased with the decision.

"It was a bit shocking to begin with but it's just one of those things, and she's happy."

The Dingles: For Richer, For Poorer is released on Monday November 15.

After 18 successful years with Emmerdale, Deena Payne's final moments in the role of village stalwart Viv Hope have now been screened. The actress's departure from the ITV1 soap was officially announced last October, but there was a tragic twist to the tale in the show's fire episodes as Viv lost her life in the blaze. Here, in a quick Q&A, Deena reflects on her time at Emmerdale and reveals what the future holds.

What have been the highlights for you over the years?
"So many! Being able to 'indulge' and have time to make the character work and working with so many brilliant actors, directors, writers and producers. And rising to so many challenges and being part of the whole scheme of things - the longer I was there, the more I realised how complicated it is and how much planning goes into everything."

What would you say was your favourite storyline?
"The airplane crash, being taken hostage, Bob coming into Viv's life and the Paddy affair!"

Is there a particular scene that stands out or is memorable for you?
"The Carol and Viv day out stalking Bob, flinging herself vertically at Paddy behind the PO counter and the ensuing scene!"

What about your favourite 'Viv' moment?
"Anything slightly over the top and a little bit inappropriate - for example, arriving at Kelly's wedding hungover in a bright green outfit with huge hat and dark glasses - and dressing up for Bob!"

What have you enjoyed the most about being on the show?
"Having the time to evolve as Viv and not being a typical nomadic actor, being in one place to bring my son up! And now realising that for quite a few people I am a household name - they have been on Viv's journey too. I am given many positive warm comments, it's a lovely fulfilling feeling!"

Who will you miss the most?
"VIV! She has been my one Emmerdale constant for nearly 18 years! And of course many of the crew and cast I have worked closely with, Tony Audenshaw especially!"

If you could sum up your time in Emmerdale in three words, what would you say?
    "I'm so lucky!"

    What's next for you?
"Loads of exciting things! I start rehearsing for the national tour of Calendar Girls at the end of March, the tour starts in Birmingham on April 18th and I will play Cora."
