And a final word from Blanche

Coronation Street legend Blanche Hunt is to make one final put-down before she passes away off screen, it has been revealed.

The Weatherfield battleaxe, who is currently enjoying a Portuguese break on the show, writes a note to daughter Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) and son-in-law Ken (Bill Roache) after hearing that they plan to host an anniversary party at the Rovers Return.

The Mirror reports that Blanche's letter will read: "I considered surprising you by flying back for your party. But then I remembered some of your previous anniversary parties and couldn't imagine it'd be worth the bother. Besides, it's 83°F here and we have a pool."

Last month, show producers confirmed that Blanche will get an on-screen funeral later this year. The occasion will be a final send-off for the popular character.

In real life, Maggie Jones - who played the acid-tongued Weatherfield resident from 1974 - passed away in December following a period of ill health.

It's great that they're letting Blanche have one final put-down.

Coronation Street's series producer Kim Crowther has confirmed that the show's team have no plans to create a new Blanche Hunt-style character.

Crowther told DS that while the Weatherfield soap will continue to have humorous moments, viewers will not see another acid-tongued resident to take Blanche's place.

Maggie Jones, who played the battleaxe from 1974, passed away in December following a period of ill health.

Speaking of the gap left behind by Jones and her character, Crowther explained: "Maggie's a great loss to the show, there's no doubt about it and everybody knows that - there's no way we could pretend otherwise and we wouldn't even try to fill those shoes."

She continued: "Maggie was really professional and a wonderful lady to work with and always delivered on screen no matter how well she felt personally. So she'll be greatly missed on screen and off. But of course we'll still have comedy on the show.

"We try and make even the blackest situations comic with sharp and witty observations, which is our unique talent. We just won't be able to write Blanche lines anymore because only she could deliver them... and she could, you know!"

Last month, it was confirmed that Blanche will get an on-screen send-off later this year.

Nobody could ever replace her, there are several other characters that make us laugh anyway.

I'm glad Corrie have decided that they won't replace Blanche with another actress. Nobody could play her like Maggie did. Bless her. It will be a sad that Maggie passed away as Blanche would have sorted peter out those two were great together.

No need for Peter to go to AA meetings again if Blanche was still around
