2646: Newt wakes next to a bloodied Gaz
Airs on Monday, September 14 2009 at 18:30 BST on Channel 4
This is a special non-linear week. Stories throughout the week follow the same timeline, but don't play out in chronological order.
Newt, Lauren and Anita arrive at the cottage and the sexual tension between Newt and Anita is palpable. On the verge of kissing, they're interrupted when an oblivious Lauren wanders in. As Newt takes his medication, they're startled by a knock at the door. They're relieved to discover that it's only Ricky. Unbeknown to them, however, a hooded figure stands watching the cottage.
During a walk in the woods, Anita falls behind and is accosted by her nemesis Gaz who looms over her. Accusing her and the rest of the Roys of ruining his life, Gaz asks her how Theresa will feel when she finds out about her and Newt - revealing he's filmed their encounter on his mobile phone. With that, Gaz offers her a deal - if she sleeps with him, he'll keep quiet.
Luckily, the other teens return and find Anita with Gaz. Newt's angry, but seizing the upper hand, Gaz is quick to point out that Lauren invited him and before they know it, everyone's heading back to the cottage. Things soon spiral out of control when Gaz turns nasty and Ricky's on the receiving end of his fury.
Loving his new found power, Gaz suggests that they play a game and is soon orchestrating truth or dare - forcing Newt and Anita to kiss. Leading the game with menace, Newt and Ricky decide that enough is enough and attempt to halt Gaz in his tracks. However, as they flee into the forest, events take a turn for the worse and Newt's literally left with blood on his hands…
Meanwhile, Mercedes has her hands full helping look after Lucas when she discovers that Malachy's been offered a top-notch job - in Canada. As they discuss the pros and cons of a job abroad, we sense that Mercedes is far more reluctant to relocate than Malachy. Using his HIV as an example for staying local, Malachy can only hope that she'll come around to his way of thinking. Confiding her fears to Myra, Mercedes thinks that everything's moving too fast – and in addition, Malachy's changed his mind about having kids and is looking into ways they can have a family.
Myra urges her daughter to speak to Malachy about her fears - after all, their future is something that they need to decide together. Malachy faces a similar reaction from Kris when he tells him about the offer of a job in Canada and Kris is confident that he'll be going nowhere as Malachy's under the thumb. A little worse for wear, Malachy returns home to find Mercedes has made a decision - it's a 'yes' to Canada and it's also full steam ahead to starting a family…
Elsewhere, at a book fair in the SU, Archie tries to cajole Elliot into talking to Leila but he's adamant that there's no point. Unable to take his eyes off her, Elliot's horrified by Archie's suggestion that Leila will more than likely have a one-night stand to get him out of her system. Meanwhile, Leila's alarmed when she gets the same sort of advice from Cheryl about Elliot.
A tentative Elliot approaches Anita and asks how things are at home. Hearing that things are pretty much the same, he offers to spend some time with her, but Leila declines and after a chat with Archie, cuts a lonely figure as she heads home alone.
2647: Newt's arrested
Airs on Tuesday, September 15 2009 at 18:30 BST on Channel 4
Gaz lies critically ill in hospital after being attacked, while the teens await their fate, scared of what will happen to them. But nobody knows who's responsible for the attack, though - except the culprit. Newt's head's all over the place as he waits to be questioned at the police station. Anita, meanwhile, is out of her depth when the police turn up at her door.
Lauren's anxious, knowing she'll have to give a statement and becomes increasingly frightened as her dad questions her about what happened - he's preparing her for what's to come and urging her to tell the truth.
The frightened gang give their statements to the police and Frankie's shocked when Newt's forced to admit that he's stopped taking his medication and as a results, she's not allowed to take him home. The police release Lauren and Anita from custody and the pair make a pact to stick together no matter what happens, while a terrified Newt is led away in a police car…
Meanwhile, Malachy's on a high after hearing about his job offer - things are finally looking up for him but Mercedes doesn't seem to share his enthusiasm. Myra's worried about Mercedes as they discuss her appointment at the fertility clinic the following day. Although Mercedes denies that she's pressing ahead with her plans for a family to stop Malachy going to work away, Myra's not so sure. Malachy's worried that Myra may try and stop him taking Mercedes abroad and broaches the subject with her. Although she's not keen on the idea, she reassures him she won't stand in their way.
Myra, however, has bigger concerns about Mercedes safety during their proposed fertility treatment but he assures her that he won't put her in any danger. Myra accepts his word.
Meanwhile, the start date for Malachy's building contract in Canada is brought forward and the company wants him to start the following week. Mercedes is a little apprehensive as everything's happening so fast but she can see how keen he is to provide them both with a better life and agrees to go.
Malachy's happy that they'll finally have some of money behind them as they venture on the opportunity of a lifetime. Mercedes, however, has to hide her concerns.
Elsewhere, Archie makes a big deal of asking Leila out in an attempt to make Elliot admit his true feelings for her. Zak doesn't understand why he's trying to get it on with Elliot's ex when they've only recently split up but just as Archie's about to confess his plan, Elliot arrives.
When Archie tells Elliot that he's thinking of asking Leila to the pictures, he shows no interest but Elliot's secretly missing her and decides to go and see how she is. He's shocked when he arrives with a bunch of flowers and discovers that Archie's already beaten him to it.
Leila realises that they're not really interested in her when she hears them arguing and throws them both out. Elliot's still adamant that he's not interested in Leila but he can't keep his eyes off her when she walks into the SU. Leila and Elliot test the water with each other but neither is willing to admit they still have feelings for each other. Archie's later surprised when Leila takes him up on his offer of a date.
2648: Mercedes is mugged
Airs on Wednesday, September 16 2009 at 18:30 BST on Channel 4
Newt's taken to hospital to be assessed by a psychologist. He's not very cooperative, knowing that they'll want to know all about his childhood again. He's surprised, though, when he realises that they want to speak to him about more recent events.
After talking things through, the psychologist informs Newt that he'll be allowed to go home tomorrow, but states that he's still a suspect for Gaz's attack. Newt continues to plead his innocence but things take a turn for the worst when Gaz flatlines…
During Newt's discussion with the psychologist, we flashback to one week prior…
Newt comforts a troubled Anita. He makes her promise to keep a secret and tells her that he plans to stop taking his medication to try out some herbal remedies instead. Lauren arrives and spoils the moment between them.
Lauren cheques that they're still up for breaking into the school tomorrow to retrieve Anita's necklace. Although they're a little unsure, Lauren's already planning how to break in. Anita can't put off going home any longer and heads back, but she plants an idea in Newt's mind when she tells him that she wishes she could get away from it all for a while.
Flashback ends
Newt sees Gaz taking money out of a woman's purse in the village, before throwing the purse away. When Gaz realises that it belongs to Mercedes, he shows it to Ste. Newt, Lauren and Ste decide that Gaz needs teaching a lesson.
Ste hears that a kid in a hoodie has mugged Mercedes and when Gaz returns to Il Gnosh with money, he instantly knows that it was him. Angry with him for putting Lucas in danger, he slams Gaz up against the wall. Gaz is quick to point out that if he lays one finger on him, he'll be arrested and lose Lucas.
Ste's later wound up when he finds Gaz hanging around outside Il Gnosh hassling Lauren. Gaz pushes his luck but Ste manages to rein in his anger and warns Gaz to back off. Ste decides to get back at Gaz by breaking into the McQueens, taking some jewellery and setting Gaz up for it by planting the stolen goods on him at hospital.
Elsewhere, Malachy and Mercedes go to the fertility clinic to discuss their options.
During their discussion, we flashback to one week ago…
Mike turns up at the McQueens' and asks Myra if she can look after Lucas for a few days while he goes to visit Amy.
Flashback ends
Mercedes struggles to cope looking after Lucas alone as she hasn't got a clue what to do with a baby, so she heads down to the shops with him. She's uneasy as Lucas continues to cry, while she tries to juggle her shopping. Mercedes's day gets even worse when she's mugged in the village and her attacker runs off with her bag.
2649: Gaz threatens Newt
Airs on Thursday, September 17 2009 at 18:30 BST on Channel 4
When the police turn up at school, Anita thinks that they're there for Newt. Lauren panics, too, but the police pass them by.
We flashback to one week prior
We see the gang break into school at night to find Anita's necklace. Left alone together, Anita and Newt almost kiss but Lauren interrupts. Newt then finds a handwritten story in Gaz's school record. The girls, meanwhile, leave to search elsewhere.
While Newt's on his own, he sees a message on the board which reads: 'U R NOT ALONE' but when Anita and Lauren return, the message has disappeared. Soon afterwards, Lauren finds Anita's necklace together with some other belongings in a classroom. At that moment, Gaz enters behind her. It emerges that Gaz is the one who's been sleeping in school, having been kicked out of his home.
As Gaz plays for sympathy, Lauren offers him some food. Gaz then reveals that he's allergic to peanuts. When a door bangs outside, the girls rush off in one direction, while Gaz drags Newt with him into a classroom. While in hiding, Anita finds keys and directions to Mr Mottram's holiday home and decides that they should go on a road trip. Gaz, meanwhile, turns on Newt. Newt taunts Gaz about the story he found but Gaz retaliates and vows to break Newt's gang apart.
Later, as they are left alone again, Anita and Newt share a kiss - which is secretly filmed by Gaz on his mobile…
End of flashback
Nancy tells Lauren that Gaz has gone into a seizure. Soon afterwards, Ste turns up to speak to Lauren. He's worried that she may have told someone that he was at the cottage but she reassures him and confides that she thinks she knows who hit Gaz.
Lauren tells Ste about how she sent messages to Anita and Ricky from Gaz's phone, and that she believes Ricky is guilty. As Anita listens in, we see a flashback to the cottage of her [Anita] pouring peanuts in Gaz's lager - and of Lauren in class, ominously explaining to Newt how Hamlet could have got away with murder…
Elsewhere, it's quiz night at The Dog but Elliot's not in the mood. When Leila walks in, he makes a swift exit, leaving Kris, Archie and Malachy to do the quiz alone.
Later, Archie berates Leila for ruining the lads' night. He feels guilty, however, when she reveals that she's looking for Anita who's gone missing. While Cheryl talks to her about Elliot, Archie apologises and offers to help her look.
In a ploy to get her to talk to Elliot, Archie takes her to the Evissa flat under false pretences. Leila sees through him, however, but still opens up to Archie, telling him how hard it is to have to look out for the family. As Archie comforts her, they both get a bit too close and end up kissing…
Meanwhile, when Mercedes sees her mugger is Gaz, she gives chase. However, she ends up losing her footing and injuring herself. Calvin notices and helps her back to his place, where she calls a taxi. While she waits for it to turn up, they reflect on their relationships. Mercedes mocks Calvin for being a sad singleton, while he accuses her of being in a rut with Malachy.
Malachy's on his weekly Thursday night out with Kris and his brother teases him for being whipped and to prove a point, Malachy cancels a call from Mercedes. Kris thinks that Malachy's tied down living with Mercedes and Myra, leaving Malachy with something to think about.
Meanwhile, Mercedes and Calvin are now more relaxed, having consumed a few cans of beer. They continue to talk about affairs of the heart and Calvin's adamant that all relationships eventually fall apart. Mercedes is left wondering if hers can survive…
