    Exclamation Redundancies on Corrie

DEIRDRE Barlow is to be made redundant as the Street gets hit by the credit crunch.

Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride, 55) is devastated when she’s axed from her town hall job.

She tells best friend Liz McDonald (Bev Callard, 52): “I’m nearly 55.

Who’s going to employ me at my age?

I’ll be lucky if I get a job on the tills at Freshco’s supermarket.”

She’s not the only Corrie character to be hit by the global financial crisis.

Joiner Bill Webster (Peter Armitage, 61) is forced to re-invent himself as “Bob the Builder” in a bid to target new customers.

His pal Pam Hobsworth (Kate Anthony, 49) tells him: “Everyone’s heard of Bob the Builder and Bill the Builder is even better.”

Butcher Graeme Proctor (Craig Gazey, 23) also loses his job.

An insider said: “Corrie tries to reflect real life and there isn’t a street in Britain which hasn’t been hit by the credit crunch.”

That is such rubbish, she is never shown going to work, so why suddenly be made redundant to highlight everyday life. The rest of us work

CORRIE butcher Graeme Proctor is distraught when he loses his job.

His cash-strapped boss Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold, 34) sacks him – claiming that he can not afford to employ him any longer.

Upset Graeme feels he has been stabbed in the back.

But Ashley is left red-faced when he discovers that his wife Claire (Julia Howarth, 29) has hired Graeme, played by Craig Gazey, 27, again.

She wants him to do all their gardening work now he is free from the butcher’s shop.
