The British Soap Awards is back and set to be bigger than ever as it looks back over another year of tears, trials, tribulations and tantrums from the nation’s biggest TV shows.

Entries from the five biggest soaps are eligible – Coronation Street, Doctors, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks – and stars from all five will don their finest on the night for what promises to be one of the award calendar’s most glamorous occasions.

Hosted by Phillip Schofield, with awards being presented by some of the entertainment worlds most famous faces, there’s everything to play for in the soap world’s ‘Oscars’.

The British Soap Awards honour outstanding achievement in the country’s most popular television genre. There are 17 awards and categories are voted for either by a panel of expert judges or by the public and include Sexiest Male and Female, Best Actor and Actress, Best Comedy Performance, Villain of the Year, Spectacular Scene of the Year, Best On-Screen Partnership and the ultimate accolade, Best British Soap which was last year won by EastEnders.

On ITV2 Michael Underwood and Angellica Bell will report on all the glamour from the red carpet and the ceremony. After the awards they will be at the Soap Awards party, celebrating with the winners, commiserating with those that missed out on glory, and getting all the behind the scenes gossip from the stars of our favourite shows.

Channel 4 teen soap Hollyoaks has secured the most nominations on this year's British Soap Awards shortlist.

Released today, the list sees each of the five qualifying soaps - Coronation Street, Doctors, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks - receive the default three nods in five of the six viewer-voted categories: Sexiest Male, Sexiest Female, Villain of the Year, Best Actor and Best Actress. Also, each show is automatically nominated for Best Soap.

Winners of the remaining 11 awards - including Best Comedy Performance, Best Newcomer, Best Single Episode and Best Storyline - have been decided by a panel.

Of the 36 shortlist panel nominations, Hollyoaks featured in each of the nine categories, while EastEnders received eight nods.

Coronation Street took seven, while Emmerdale and Doctors were given six each.

Notably, Corrie failed to receive a nomination in the Best Dramatic Performance category, while Emmerdale didn't make the top four in the Best Storyline and Best Single Episode stakes.

Nominations for the Lifetime Achievement and Special Achievement awards are also considered by the panel.

The eleventh annual British Soap Awards take place at BBC's Television Centre in central London on Saturday. The ceremony will transmit on Wednesday, May 13 on ITV1.

British Soap Awards 2009: Full Panel Shortlist

Yep, here we are again. We're just days off the eleventh annual British Soap Awards which, each year, sees hoards of soap stars throw on their wardrobe best for the glitzy bash held at BBC's London Television Centre on Saturday night.

Until then, though, here are the final four nominations in each of the panel-voted categories, listed in alphabetical order by soap. Don't forget to check back just after midnight on Sunday for the complete winners' list and, once I've sobered up, some gossip from the red carpet and bash itself!

By default, each soap has 15 nominations in the public-voted categories and in the nine panel-voted categories each show has a different number. This year, Hollyoaks has nominations in every award category, EastEnders eight, Corrie has seven, while Emmerdale and Doctors has six.

Now while I go and buy a nice gold tie, you can continue to vote for your Best Soap by clicking here.
