I am absolutely over the moon about this! I love Jonathan Creek - I'm so glad it's returning, even if it's only for a one off special. I hope they get Caroline Quentin back on board along with Alan Davies - those two lit up the screen with their chemistry.

Jonathan Creek is going to be airing in like a month's time! I am so excited!! The most anticipated show this Christmas for me..

They were unable to get Caroline Quentin back though and instead, they have that blonde woman from Two Pints as Jonathan's new assistant (I forgot her name) but she also stars in Love Soup.. I think she'll be better than Julia Sawalha at least!

There was some info over the episode from the BBC Press Office.. I will try and find it out.

What I found from the Jonathan Creek website.. it's a sypnosis of the episode really but put it as a spoiler anyway..

    Spoiler:
The new Christmas special is called "The Grinning Man" and starts filming at the end of June 2008. As expected Julia Sawalha will not be reprising her role as Carla Borrego and nor will Caroline Quentin be returning as Maddy Magellan. Instead Alan Davies will be joined by Sheridan Smith, an actress who is no stranger to the writings of David Renwick having starred in Love Soup with Tasmin Greig.

Sheridan will play Joey Ross a woman described as "fearlessly sceptical" in the BBC press release.

    From the BBC press release:-

"When Creek is called in to solve unexplained events in a vast Gothic house, following several disappearances inside a gloomy old attic known as "The Nightmare Room", he is completely baffled.

For 70 years the room has been claiming lives. Could the ghost of a madman who preys upon human flesh really be to blame?

When two young women take shelter there from a raging thunderstorm one night, it's not long before the ominous "presence" has claimed another victim.

Determined to get to the truth about what has happened to her friend, the fearlessly sceptical Joey Ross (Sheridan Smith) finds herself working alongside veteran lateral thinker Jonathan Creek. Together they embark on a complex, often dangerous, investigation into a mystery which only continues to deepen...

Can Jonathan Creek once again shed light on the riddle and render the impossible possible? Or are his once formidable powers of deduction about to be eclipsed by the raw intuition of his younger counterpart?"

Jonathan Creek creator David Renwick has admitted that he is worried about how his new Christmas special will be received by fans.

The BBC One mystery show, which stars Alan Davies, is returning for a one-off edition on New Year's Day. It will be the first new episode of the programme since 2004.

Renwick, who also created One Foot in the Grave, has now revealed that he is expecting a backlash from viewers after the episode has aired.

Speaking to The Times, he explained: "People say, 'Oh Jonathan Creek's coming back. Fantastic.' And then they watch it and go: 'God, what a mistake.' Which is what happened with One Foot in the Grave. So I tend to expect the worst."

Renwick also confessed that writing a new episode of the programme was a "safe decision" - as he did not want to deal with the pressure of starting a new project from scratch.

He said: "I had three options. Retire. Or go away for the best part of six months and struggle to come up with something else, sit down and write it, and then try to interest someone else in it. Or I could resurrect Jonathan Creek."
