Yeah for some reason most of the time (not all), but most of the time the "real" talent doesn't win.

    Take Steve for example.

And I reckon Leon will be the same as Steve.

How many people can you name that got a recording contract and are still around now?

Will Young, Leona, Girls Aloud are the only ones I remember.

Gareth Gates, Hear'Say, Liberty X, the one who won Fame Acadamy, the male band from Popstars the Rivals, Michelle McMannus, Steve Brookstein all won or came close to winning and got a contract and have no disappeard into obscuirty.

All these talent shows giving out recording contracts or similar are starting to do my head in. The music industry was so much better before this happened.
    Thanks CrazyLea

I think that these reality shows should be doing more to encourage young people who can't only sing but maybe play musical instrusments and write their own songs as well. Most of the finalist and winners of X-factor and Pop Idol are used as a marketing puppet they have people writing their songs for them, and once the novelty has worn off they disappear into the unknown. If an act that was able to write their own music was to win then it would give them the chance to release there own music and prove to the public that they were the best act to win.

I suppose there is no point in these type of reality shows, if there's going to be more than one winner...because these talent shows state at the beginning, they are looking to give 1 person a recording contract, but they end up handing them all out to people on a plate which is understandable if they have brilliant talent, but doesn't it defeat the original intention of these types of shows?

I agree with Kath here, there's no need for another medicore singer in the industry, as the really talented ones will get through the old fasioned way.

What we should encourage in this talent shows are artists who can perform instruments, write their own songs and make their style unique, so we can find the kind of artists that aren't your confentional manufactured pop star. Fame Accadmey did this, but becuase it was put up against Pop Idol it flopped.

my brother is a very talented musican and does write his own song, sings well and plays many instruments.... he did an audition for on of those reality shows and he was told he wasn't "commerical" enough although his music would be very middle of the road. I can only guess that not been commerical actually means, we can't own you!! and that is the point with these shows, the winners/runner up etc are actually owned until they go past their sell by date and then they find the next big one time singer

All the great musician has to begin somewhere and at some point they would have probably wrote some crappy tunes, but with young people showing an interest in music on the increase surely there must be some millionaire willing to explore a gap in the market. I bet if they did a reality show for groups or singers who can write their own songs or play an instrument it would be a huge success and would encourage young people to take an interest in learning a proper musical instrument not just messing around with other peoples tunes. There are loads of buskers around the city streets and bands playing in clubs and pubs who could become a great success they only need a guiding hand in the right direction.
