‘There’s a special episode coming up mid-February and in that episode we’re doing a bit of a flash-forward ep. I know it’s been done recently on another show but this is something that’s been in the making for a really long time. The big stories we have on the table, it gives us a destination for those big stories to all come together and be involved in a much bigger storyline.’

Coronation Street is planning an emotional new storyline for Bernie Winter-Alahan following the shocking death of Billy Mayhew. Show bosses are taking the caring character in an unexpected new direction this year, after she was rocked by the recent Corriedale tragedy.

The ITV soap has already explored a tough time for Bernie, as her beloved son Paul Foreman died in September 2024, with his Motor Neurone Disease (MND) story reaching a heartbreaking conclusion. Paul's husband Billy had also become hugely important to Bernie over the years, so his sudden death will understandably hit her hard.

In a new interview, Coronation Street's producer Kate Brooks explained: "Bernie's such a fun character, but she's really stoic and she's watched her son die, which was horrific. Now she's having to come to terms with the fact that Billy has also died.

"The thing with Bernie is that she wants to take care of people. She's people's rock, but as a result of that, she's buried a lot of grief. If you cast your mind back to when Paul died, it was very rare that we saw Bernie lose it, or burst into tears.

"She was strong for everyone, she's the strength of that whole family. So we wanted to explore what would happen if she had to deal with another really tragic death ? and how that grief manifests."

Corrie fans saw a glimpse of Bernie's devastation earlier this week, as she decided to close up Roy's Rolls early when she couldn't face the day at work. However, she did reluctantly serve surgeon Vincent Harper when he persistently paid two trips to the caf? that day.

"We take Bernie on a really interesting journey as she struggles," Brooks continued. "It gets to the point where, because it's been bubbling for such a long time, it eventually erupts.

"When it does, there are consequences for Bernie. It's not as straightforward as Dev sweeping in and making sure that everything's okay. It's a really muddy, murky story that we take her on. I think it just again explores another side of Bernie that we've not seen yet."

The show's producer left fans with hope that Bernie and Dev's relationship can ultimately survive the turmoil to come.

She said: "Obviously it's going to be a test for Bernie and Dev, but it's a test that they are a really strong couple, and no matter what we throw at them, they can overcome because they love each other. They absolutely adore each other.

"It's a big story for Bernie, and certainly Roy's embroiled in that story as well. It's a really interesting one to keep an eye on, because it's going to be quite a big start of the year for Bernie."

Billy was killed after driving the wedding minibus which crashed in the Corriedale special. Although Theo Silverton had a chance to save the much-loved vicar, the villain chose to protect his own dark secrets by leaving Billy to die.

Coronation Street's producer Kate Brooks has defended the show's increase in "special episodes" which stray from the traditional soap format. Corrie and fellow ITV soap Emmerdale have both been experimenting with their styles in recent years, sparking fan debate over whether the shows should stick to their roots.

Late last year, Corrie was praised for a powerful "behind closed doors" episode which explored Todd Grimshaw's domestic abuse ordeal through the lens of various in-universe cameras, including CCTV and police bodycams. A special flashback episode also explored a dark secret from Maggie Driscoll's past.

Looking ahead, the show will play with time again next month ? as specially-filmed flashforward scenes tease a mystery death with five possible victims. However, some fans have argued online that the "special episodes" are becoming too frequent.

In a new interview, Brooks was asked whether the show has even more experimental episodes coming up beyond the flashforward.

"I probably won't be able to talk about them, but yes we do," Brooks replied. "We do have episodes that feel special and different. They break the usual formula of soap and I think they're a really interesting way of telling the story.

"We have a lot of episodes a year. We have a lot of our 'traditional format' episodes to appease the more traditional viewers. So I think when the story affords it, or when it lends itself to taking a more abstract and slightly less conventional approach, then we embrace it and we do it really well.

"We have a great team around us who work really hard to ensure that whilst the episode might feel different, it still feels very story-driven."

She continued: "If you take the recent Todd and Theo episode as an example, you can't get more 'kitchen sink drama' than being in somebody's living room watching them live their lives. That's taking it right back to day dot.

"What we'll continue to do going forward, is taking these big storylines that we have and try and tell them in fresh and innovative ways. Initially, people might not always love it, but I think it's a risk that we should take.

"We continue to take it, because we need to keep abreast of the competition. We need to make sure that we stay relevant, fresh and new. So yes, there'll be more of those types of episodes coming up."

Another big Corrie change is the show's scheduling pattern. From this week onwards, the show will air every weeknight at 8.30pm for 30 minutes. This is five episodes per week, while the previous hour-long editions created the equivalent of six weekly .

Brooks added: "The difference with the hour longs is that it's an hour of drama to film, so you need every beat and every scene to feel interesting and move the story forward. When you're doing that three times a week, that's quite a lot to sustain.

"So I think the episodes will now naturally feel pacier. We're able to play slightly more lighter textual stories, because it's a couple of scenes, as opposed to four or five or six scenes over the course of an episode.

"There will definitely be more of a spread of characters as well, because we're able to dip in and out of people's stories and not be constrained by hour-long episodes.

"So, whilst the storytelling and the storylines that are currently running are not going to massively change, what will change is that the episodes will feel way more pacier ? and will feel like how soap should really be."

What a load of rubbish! It just sounds like they are trying to brainwash viewers. I just find the episodes too short now, and more times a week, which is a nuisance.

ation Street has teased a huge new death storyline, set to begin this spring in a special flashforward episode. The scenes will open with one Weatherfield resident being questioned by police after discovering a dead body, before revealing five characters who could potentially be the victim.

Producer Kate Brooks has strongly hinted that it will be a villain who meets their maker, revealing that the character in question has "created a lot of waves in the street" by the time they're killed. Viewers, however, will be kept guessing throughout spring as the mystery unfolds.

But with suspicion falling in multiple directions, the big question is: which Corrie character will lose their life? Here are our current suspects?

Top of our list ? it's the callous Carl Webster. Carl's enemies on the cobbles are stacking up thanks to his affair with Abi and his cruel treatment of Debbie, who is living with dementia. He was also responsible for Tyrone's devastating injuries last year.

More recently (and perhaps more crucially), he was among those to blame for the multi-vehicle pile-up in the Corriedale special that claimed the life of Billy Mayhew, although he's now letting Debbie take the blame.

As he continues to hide his guilt over this, the scheming Carl now knows Theo's own dark secret over the tragedy too. When Theo discovered what Carl knew, he turned the tables and threatened him if he were ever to reveal the truth.

So if the mystery does hinge on a character who has been upsetting everyone on the cobbles, it's not surprising that Carl is right up there as the most likely candidate, if a little obvious.

Viewers have been watching in horror as Theo has spent the past few months emotionally and physically abusing his fianc? Todd Grimshaw. The scheming scaffolder then left poor Billy to die in the Corriedale crash, wanting to silence him forever after the vicar discovered the truth about Todd's ordeal.

While show bosses have recently promised that there is hope for Todd in future episodes, as other characters will soon start to realise that something is wrong, Theo is still firmly in the running for getting his deathly comeuppance.

The manipulative Megan Walsh is another possible contender, with her dark storyline one to watch over the coming months.

Athletics coach Megan is currently grooming schoolboy Will Driscoll and has recently discovered that she is pregnant with his baby.

Megan has also recently begun a cruel scheme against Sam Blakeman, after he discovered her inappropriate relationship with Will, and she is still dating an oblivious Daniel Osbourne as well.

With Megan's lies mounting, and bosses promising that the flashforward story will have "many twists and so many turns", this one certainly seems to fit the bill. But fans will have to keep watching to see if she ends up being the murder victim or not.

Maggie Driscol

Before Maggie joined the show, Corrie bosses promised us that she'd be ruffling a few feathers, and the Driscoll matriarch has certainly done that. But could she eventually end up crossing one person too many?

Maggie has sparked row after row since moving into The Rovers with her family last year, and has also caused quite a stir amongst fans.

Although Maggie recently promised to stop causing quite so much trouble after learning that her son Ben had heart problems, which could have been sparked by stress, she struggled to stick to her word and is currently still holding grudges with both Eva and Leanne.

Maggie is clearly a ticking timebomb and all eyes will now be on her over the next few months.

Becky Swain


Swarla fans might be hoping we've seen the last of the scheming Becky Swain, but could a twist in the tale mean that she meets an even more definitive end?

Becky got her comeuppance when she was sentenced to 12 years in prison for her crimes earlier this month.

Amy Cudden, who played Becky, later confirmed on social media that her recent prison-based scenes were her exit from the soap.

But what if they weren't? It isn't completely beyond the realms of possibility that Becky could ultimately end up escaping from prison, and that Amy's post was all a red herring. It's something to consider anyway?

Kit Green

Trouble is never too far away from corrupt copper Kit Green, and it's for that reason that he's made his way onto this list.

Fans saw Kit finally come good in the Corriedale special, when he rescued Carla Connor from the shipping container that her nemesis Becky had her locked up in. He further secured himself in Carla and Lisa's good books by helping to bring down Becky once and for all.

However, there's still a chance that Kit could end up getting too close to the truth about one of the many cobbles secrets, leading to an untimely end. And we also aren't convinced he's completely changed his ways ? and neither is Jacob Roberts, who plays him.

"I feel like he'll always be dodgy!" Jacob said to us. "And I think they should always keep him dodgy.

"But I don't think he's turned over a new leaf. I think he could stab Lisa in the back straight away ? if he wanted to and if it helped him. I think Kit's a selfish character, so yeah, 100% he'd do it!"

Jodie Ramsey

Corrie's mysterious newcomer Jodie Ramsey has been raising suspicions ever since she arrived on the cobbles earlier this month.

Jodie, played by Olivia Frances-Brown, was introduced during the dramatic Corriedale episode, and it was later confirmed that she is the estranged sister of Shona Platt.

The shock reveals immediately put her at the centre of a huge new storyline for the Platts ? and viewers will continue to question what her true intentions are in future episodes.

With Jodie clearly keeping multiple secrets and lying about her past, it's not really a surprise that she's made her way onto this list.

But with so many twists and turns to come, it's anyone's guess as to why she could end up meeting a grisly end.

Brody Michaelis

Trouble seems to follow Brody around, and we're not ruling him out of the running here, either.

Brody is sadly known for making some poor choices ? stealing cars for Carl, derailing Dev and Bernie's wedding day, and dragging Dylan Wilson into trouble.

Could Brody cross the wrong person next time and find himself meeting a fatal end?

Lou Michaelis

It's not just Brody who has made his way onto our possible victim list ? his mum has too.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Lou Michaelis is set to make a brief return to the cobbles later this year, following her exit last summer.

The controversial character was last seen in July when she was given a prison sentence, after pleading guilty to attacking Gary Windass.

While little else is known about her return yet, Lou being the murder victim might be a bit of a stretch given that she is currently in jail. But stranger things have certainly happened.

The ITV soap kicked off a new story for Bernie Winter this week, when she caught the attention of newcomer Mal Roper on a night out.

Bernie has been struggling in the wake of Billy Mayhew's death but her messy antics with Mal could end up jeopardising her marriage to Dev.

Although Bernie didn't cheat on Dev, she's keen to keep him in the dark over what really happened during that fateful night ? something which becomes increasingly tricky when Mal insists on sticking around in Weatherfield next week.

Producer Kate Brooks has also promised more twists and turns with this, saying: "It's a really muddy, murky story that we take her on. I think it just again explores another side of Bernie that we've not seen yet."

Could Bernie end up being responsible if Mal was to meet his maker?

Coronation Street stars Tony Maudsley and Amy Robbins have teased that there is a big new storyline for their characters George Shuttleworth and Christina Boyd in the pipeline - a plot that sees George get taken to court!

Since George and Christina began a surprising romance last year after his split from Eileen, their relationship has gone from strength to strength, and they have already become a rather popular couple in Weatherfield.

Tony and Amy, who have been real-life friends for 25 years, joined Inside Soap for a sweet photoshoot on the cobbles as part of our special Valentine?s Day issue - and they teased that their characters are about to face a serious problem.

"George is about to get in some legal trouble," reveals Tony. "He inherits some money from a widow, and the daughter accuses him of embezzlement and starts spreading vicious rumours about him."

While George finds himself on the wrong side of the law, Tony explains that Christina remains by his side throughout his ordeal.

"George ends up in court!" he explains. "Chrissie steps in to fight his corner and really proves her love for him."

It may still be early days in their relationship, but it looks like George and Christina are happy and locked in for the foreseeable. Tony and Amy are already imagining wedding bells for their characters - and they tell us that they have some hilarious ideas for their big day.

"We?ve already planned their wedding day!" Tony laughs. "I want something to go wrong like there being a problem with the wedding car, and Christina has to go to the ceremony in a hearse."

Amy adds: "Or the florist hasn?t turned up and I have to grab some flowers from the undertakers, so I?m walking up the aisle holding a wreath saying ?Nan? or something! Things go wrong but they end up happy, drunk and dancing."

"It would be a funny, heartwarming and riotous wedding," Tony predicts. "'Chrissie Shuttleworth? sounds like a proper Corrie character, doesn?t it?"

1. Theo's abuse is revealed

Unaware that Theo trapped Billy in the exploding van, Todd has taken his fianc?'s vile digs about causing the vicar's death to heart.

And as Theo conceals his murderous secret, Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has warned that he'll step up his efforts to control Todd.

On the realities of coercive control and domestic violence, Brooks recently said: "We wanted to play the truth of this story. This is not something that's wrapped up after a couple of months ? this is ongoing."

A turning point is on the way, though. Brooks added: "Todd will start to realise that maybe all is not what it seems. There are people starting to look out for Todd and realise that he's not behaving how he should be behaving ? and he's becoming a broken shadow of the person he once was."

As Summer Spellman, George Shuttleworth and Sarah Platt recognise some worrying signs, the story shifts to how they can help Todd without making his situation worse.

Theo also has Carl Webster to contend with, after Carl overheard Theo admitting to his role in Billy's death. The pair made an uneasy deal after Theo clocked that Carl was also up to no good, but could Carl outsmart Theo to position himself as the hero?

2. Maggie's connection to the Barlows is revealed

Viewers will learn exactly what got Maggie so rattled when she peered into a cabinet in the Barlow household.

What's her connection to the family? Ken has lived at No.1 Coronation Street all his life, so will this bombshell impact him directly?

"We will reveal what that secret is in the upcoming months," promised Brooks in a recent chat. "But it is just the tip of the iceberg?"


3. Megan faces an almighty wrath

Picking up on that teaser, Brooks reminded us that the revelation that Maggie killed her husband has shown us "what Maggie is capable of, especially when it comes to protecting her lads".

And when Megan's grooming of Maggie's grandson Will comes to light, Brooks has confirmed that "it's not going to go down well with Maggie".

Before Megan's actions unravel, she'll manipulate Sam Blakeman, and after she sabotages his coursework, the young lad dangerously considers using ADHD medication as a study aid when he gets a mysterious offer.

According to Brooks, Sam will suffer "massively" at Megan's hands. This brings Leanne Battersby and Toyah Habeeb into the drama, while Eva Price will also be involved as Will's stepmother.

The soap will explore "what lengths they're willing to go to" to protect their boys. Will the trio make Megan pay, or might Maggie get to her first?

Beth Nixon, who plays Megan, also recently told BBC Radio York that Will "comes to realise he is a victim [and that] it's not love and she will get her comeuppance".

4. Tim faces up to his past

While Tim Metcalfe has been in denial about his own childhood experience with an older woman, he'll finally see, through Will, that he was groomed himself.

"It's going to be a really interesting journey to take Tim on," said Brooks. "We really use both stories to make sure that Tim knows what happened in his past was not acceptable."

5. Swarla wedding

With scheming Becky out of their lives, Carla Connor and Lisa Swain are looking to a brighter future.

"They were engaged, so wedding bells [are] certainly ringing in the not-too-distant future, and they'll get their happy ever after," confirmed Brooks, who promised the couple will "be happy and content with each other" and enjoy "a romantic spring".

Swarla fans, rejoice!

6. Cassie Plummer's exit

With Claire Sweeney confirmed to be leaving the show, this leaves us wondering what ultimately splits her alter ego Cassie from Steve McDonald, and how and why she parts ways with son Tyrone Dobbs.

A Coronation Street spokesperson explained: "Cassie will be on the cobbles until the summer, during which time she will continue to make her presence felt in Weatherfield, leading up to a great exit storyline."

Does this small hint mean Cassie's fiery nature is the catalyst for her exit?

7. Steve rocked by tragedy

Sad news will reach the cobbles in the coming weeks, as it's revealed that Steve's father Jim McDonald has died.

Show bosses haven't shared any official details of the storyline yet, but it's expected to focus on Steve's grief in the aftermath. The character of Jim was last seen on screen in 2018.

8. Jodie Ramsey's obsession deepens

As Jodie continues to present herself as a saving grace for sister Shona and the Platts, it's brother-in-law David she showers with the most attention.

The news that Jodie will smash Shona and David's wedding photo certainly leaves us suspicious that she's channelling the lead in Single White Female. So far, though, Brooks has only shared that Jodie's "ulterior motives" will be revealed.

There are "lots of secrets to explode", including the context of her mysterious Corriedale debut. "We'll find out exactly why she was in that van," said Brooks. "We'll find out what her link to [Emmerdale's] Graham is."

9. Shona's past explored

Meanwhile, nearly ten years after we first met her, we'll get an insight into Shona's upbringing. Next week, we're introduced to Shona and Jodie's father, played by Brassic star Steve Evets.

In the wake of her reunion with Jodie, the soap boss said of Shona: "What lengths would she go to, to protect her sister?"

Shona believes Jodie has been the victim of an abusive partner, but viewers know that Jodie has used someone else's testimony as her own. What's Jodie's real story? And how would Shona react to learn that Jodie has been poisoning stepdaughter Lily's mind against her?

10. Bernie struggles with secret turmoil

Bernie's buried grief rose to the surface when she indulged in a night of binge drinking and drug use with a stranger called Mal, who then got hired for an electrician job in the caf?.

Brooks mused that we're seeing "another side of Bernie", before sharing that this story will be "a test for Bernie and Dev; but it's a test that they are a really strong couple, and no matter what we throw at them, they can overcome because they love each other".

So, it seems love will prevail. But how wary should Bernie be of Mal?

11. Carl Webster faces justice as Debbie suffers

We now know that Debbie is actually Carl's mother, and is knowingly taking the blame for his role in the Corriedale crash. Just as he began to feel guilty, Debbie's big admission left Carl full of resentment.

As she's imprisoned for Carl's crime, Debbie's dementia battle becomes even tougher as she tries to adjust to her new surroundings ? and that's where fellow inmate Lou Michaelis comes in, as well as a fearsome new character played by former Emmerdale star Kelli Hollis.

Speaking of Debbie's ongoing journey, Brooks reminded us that it's "still kind of early stages, and we've still got a long way to go". But will poor Debbie be spending the rest of her life behind bars?

By the laws of soap, Carl must be caught out properly for framing Debbie and carrying out the hit and run on Tyrone. Will Debbie be vindicated? Or might Carl pay for his behaviour in an entirely different way?

12. Flashforward murder mystery

Coronation Street will tease us with a flashforward special, which previews a body being discovered by one local in a few months' time.

The murder victim won't yet be disclosed, but we'll have five possible victims to ponder over, and "a lot of those potential victims have created a lot of waves in the street," explained Brooks.

With this in mind, Digital Spy has been busy theorising whether central villains Carl, Theo or Megan, among others, could be about to lose their life in an act of vengeance for the damage they've caused.

Whoever ends up dead, and whoever the killer is, Brooks warned we should expect the unexpected. And the twists will involve "an awful lot of the community. Everyone's impacted, everyone's affected by the story".
