Not being religious I have no idea what an Archdeacon is. Even so he must have been known to many of the congregation, as he was a vicar in the past.

A bit OTT, I think, just a means of causing trouble in her marriage.
The way the whole street never seems to stop talking about Billy is unreal, especially free and cheap drinks in the pub. As if they all do not have enough going on in their own lives.

I think it was a marriage of convenience. - Convenience for the script writers, to give them the opportunity to think up more unbelievable tales.

I would assume that a large proportion of those their were his parishioners, not people we would normally see.

it didnt look packed , even as vicar or arch deacon he should have had a full house
