    Exclamation Kev (Chris Coghill)

Emmerdale has cast a Slow Horses star to the cast in a mysterious role, one that is set to "shake things up" on the ITV soap.

Actor Chris Coghill, who plays Hobbs in the Apple TV+ drama, has joined the Emmerdale cast this week as a new character known only as Kev.

He arrives at the village supposedly looking for directions, but it seems like he's actually looking for someone. The question is, who, and why?

Emmerdale's executive producer Laura Shaw said that: "We are delighted that someone of Chris' calibre has joined our cast.

"I think the viewers will be intrigued to see how the character of Kev will cause shockwaves this autumn.

"Kev has a strong connection to one of our characters and it?s safe to say his arrival is going to be a massive surprise that will have major repercussions for some of our villagers."

Coghill himself has added that: "I am really happy to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. Kev is definitely going to shake things up a bit and I'm looking forward to getting cracking!"

The actor has started filming his debut scenes this week, and is set to first appear on screen in September.

That's not the only thing happening in September, as that's when Slow Horses returns for its highly-anticipated fifth season.

The show, which follows a group of secret agents who are considered failures and assigned to do menial tasks, is a big hit for the streamer, and has been renewed for not just a sixth, but a seventh season.

Coghill shared that his character would be a menace in the village, teasing: "It's complicated, isn't it? Kev is unhinged. There are genuine feelings there [for Robert], but they're not quite what they should be.

Kev Townsend is reportedly set for an upcoming exit - but bosses are allegedly plotting a swift comeback following a strong reaction from viewers. The character, played by Chris Coghill, is said to have just been brought in for a short-term stint, but he's proven to be a hit.

A source told The Sun: "Chris originally signed up for a limited stint on the show as an antagonist for Robron with a mysterious link to the village but things have gone mad.

"Viewers absolutely love Kev. Bosses knew Chris would be popular because he’s a great actor but for Kev to have become so popular has definitely come as a big surprise."

The report suggests Chris has only filmed scenes until the end of the year, but added: "The bosses are looking at ways to bring him back in future to give the fans what they want.”

Emmerdale actor Chris Coghill has confirmed that his final scenes as Kev Townsend have already aired, although fans (and his fellow cast members) are hoping that he comes back.

Kev originally departed the village shortly after arriving, when he realised that he couldn't break Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle up. However, he came back over the festive period alongside Aaron's evil ex John, with the two seemingly teaming up for a frosty alliance.

He didn't follow through with John's latest plan, and instead warned Aaron about the danger he was in.

Kev also went to see his son Lewis Barton, who remains unaware of his parentage. Nicola King gave him one final ultimatum, telling Kev he had to be a proper dad to Lewis or leave for good.

Kev seemingly decided Lewis would be better off without him and walked away from his son, with Lewis remaining in the dark.

Coghill has now confirmed that his time on Emmerdale is done, writing on Instagram: "Right. In a bit Emmerdale. Been an absolute joy. Thanks for all the love for Kev", adding "#kevout".

In the comments section, fans let it be known that they are really hoping Kev gets to come back once again, and not just because of the potential storylines with Lewis.

"Please come back Chris," wrote one viewer. "Kev was the best thing to happen in Emmerdale for years. Complete nutcase, but bloody hilarious xx."

"You turned Kev from an unlikable character into a fan favourite. If you ever get the opportunity to come back, please do it for the viewers who love you," commented another.

"So wished they were keeping Kev," a third said, while a fourth wrote: "Nooooooo I absolutely love Kev and I need him to know his son."

Lewis actor Bradley Riches also chimed in, commenting: "MISS YOU DAD XX." While Danny Miller, who plays Aaron, wrote: "I?m gonna start a petition."

If one of Emmerdale's biggest stars has publicly called for Kev to come back, does that mean it's only a matter of time before he does?

Too bad. I found Kevin very entertaining and was looking forward to his obsession changing, and this very unlikely father son duo. Kevin was a rip. I will always remember his karaoke song. He had me on the floor with laughter.
